The monster on the island is one of the bigger mysteries presented by the show. But if it is so big, why do none of the characters ever see it? Well, because….

The monster is a five-dimensional being.

The world we inhibit is three-dimensional, made up of length, width and height. It is how our brain perceives the world. As humanity was evolving, it only needed to be able to comprehend three-dimensions.

If a two-dimensional being were to see a sphere, they would not be able to comprehend it correctly. All they would see would be an oscillating circles that seemed to come from nowhere, because their mind would not be able to comprehend it. This extends to humans: if we were to see a five dimensional being, all we would be able to see would be random objects popping out of nowhere, then disappearing. ( The fourth dimension, is time, so is disregarded since it is not a spatial dimension. )

Mathematically, I believe 24 dimensions have been proven. It’s been mathematically proved that with the proper energy source, we could induce time travel. The problem is we do not have a power source large enough to simulate the experiment. In fact, if humanity ever journeys to a planet outside our solar system, inter-dimensional wormholes are more likely than actual space travel.

This would explain why the survivors never see the monster. Most of it’s mass is undetectable to the human brain since it doesn’t entirely exist in this dimension. Every time it’s been seen, it’s always crashing through trees. This would obscure what little parts of the monster that were visible.

As to what an extra-dimensional being is doing on this island…

Everyone’s heard of the Bermuda triangle, where ships and planes happen to disappear. What if in phase-shifts of the space-time continuum rips appear? A tear large enough for a plane or ship to pass through. Which brings us back to the monster. The island could be a conduit for such places. Where phase shifts happen more often than normal, which is why the monster is not a constant threat.

But Ionous, why doesn’t Danielle see or hear the monster?

She hears whispering, right? The others, people who are always out of reach, always out of sight, but they make sound. Possibly the others themselves lie just beyond our world as well. The others and the monster would be separate entities, but from the same world. Just like we have wild predators in this world.

That’s about it. Discuss.
