Charlie's hand-FATE

On his hand he has written Fate. Well in the end of this episode he changes it to LATE. What is that supposed to mean? I'm confused.

Dom said in the interview with lost-tv.com that he changes the word on his hand every episode to something that's going on in his life. I don't know what "late" means though.

I was thinking the same thing. When it showed him, it also showed Claire. I didn't think this made sense but now that someone else said it. I thought it was a coincedence, then I thought she was having labor when we meet her, now she's not. Is the baby late? lol

I can't believe I failed to speculate on the "fate" from last week.
Late's a good one, though. Is he referring to the rescue party being late? Does he mean late as in "the late federal marshall"? The fact that only very recent events may have impact on their current lives?

What I find sort of funny is that in real life, Dom is occasionally late to events (He was really late to the MTVMAs in June), so maybe this is art imitating life. Maybe it is foreshadowing Claire's pregnancy; she might be further along than she thinks. Maybe he is thinking that if their plane is listed as 'late' at the airports, they'll send a search party for them. Maybe it's his way of keeping up hope of a rescue.

Ok for those few who may not know why I'm excited I'll explain. After the Two Towers came out I noticed a particular pattern of lines being thrown into the films. Real big geeks (like myself) know the line pattern in the Star Wars films is "I have a very bad feeling about this". Well in LOTR someone was always LATE!!

Example:
"You're LATE." ~Frodo to Gandalf (Fellowship)
"You're LATE." ~Legolas (in elvish) to Aragorn (Two Towers)
"LATE as usual." ~ Orc to Corsairs ship (Return)

It happens at LEAST once sometimes twice throughout the ENTIRE trilogy. That's why I think Dom said some of his fans might get it! PHEW! I'm so glad I'm a freak right now! LOL :lol

We see him doing this about the same time as Jack's comment to Kate, "we all died three days ago".... so maybe this is Charlie referring to himself as the 'late' Charlie Pace....?

I can't remember the name of the movie, unfortunately, but it involves a convict in prison, and on the fingers of one hand he's written HATE, and on the other, LOVE. Seinfeld does a take-off on it once, in a dream sequence.

Anyway, I immediately thought of that film in the first episode, when Charlie started writing on his hands (in fact, I thought he'd written HATE instead of FATE--clearly, I wasn't paying close enough attention). Initially, I do think that was the ploy--to remind the viewers of that movie reference, and distract them from the idea that something deeper might be going on. I'm sorry if someone has posted about this already, I've been going through the back-posts as best I can, but I'm a little behind (err, late. /end bad joke).

I like the idea of it having to do with death--referring to himself as "the late."

I just hope it never says LOST...because wouldn't that be predictable? :lol

Read on TWoP and on this board (the closed thread) that this week's word was ATE. Apparently the finger with the L has fresh tape on it... though he wasn't shown writing anything on it, it makes sense that it'd just say ATE. Apt for this episode, eh?

Well I did not see Charlie write anything in last night's episode. It appears to me that if they are going to use this as a device to get fans to tune in because they are wondering what Charlie will write next they should show it in the episode. For that matter, did anyone see where they showed the piglet had been roasted and everyone got to eat? It appeared to me it was assumed by the time they got to the memorial service and were burning the bodies in the plane.

Yes, clearly, in last night's episode, 'Walkabout', Charlie's hand said ATE.

When he is trying to use his dwindling supply of drugs and Shannon walks up on him-- just before she does and his hands are shaking badly, you can clearly see that his pinky finger has fresh tape on it and it has no letter on it, leaving the remaining fingers to spell out-- ATE...

It does tie in well, yes? They have just found out that they are out of food and it is definitely on his mind since it isn't in his stomach!


I see that it literally will not be 'spelled out' for us every week-- we're going to have to be sharp-eyed to see what the new word will be!

Yeah, Charlie tried to get a fix earlier in the episode, but Shannon walked in on him. So he had to wait until late when most people were gathered at the memorial service. I think he did pretty well during the episode, since he hadn't had his fix yet.
