Unluckily enough for me, I became a fan of DBZ not long before the series ended, but I think I caught it at a good point. The Android saga was where I began, and I loved the Androids, and Cell especially.

I was a huge complainer when it came to the length of the fights that could last numbers of episodes, but then I realised that the anime sometimes went ahead of the manga, so I guess it made sense in the long run.

I'd say my favourite character was future Trunks when he killed Frieza, because there was something undeniably cool about him. Goku's determination was pretty admirable too, which made him very likeable.

Opinions?

I am ashamed to admit that when I was younger I watched all of Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and Dragonball GT. My brother loved it, so I picked up bits and pieces of the story, and eventually just watched it all.

The length of the fight scenes were ridiculous, as well as the endless powering up and hair growing.. but there was some good humour in the series, especially the first. I remember a random episode dedicated to Piccolo and Goku trying to get their driving licenses, that was great.

Vegeta was my favourite character, but that moustache he got by the end.. nonono.

A good series, but imo the younger you are, the better it is by far.

I Love Dragonball Z. I used to watch it pretty much every day on Cartoon Network.

Vegeta was probably my favourite, but I also loved Goku because I'm quite sentimental about classic good-guys.

I couldn't really get into Dragonball GT. Although it was pretty awesome when Goku turned Super-Saiyin level 4 right at the end

At the risk of sounding like a big jerk, I was into Dragonball and Dragonball Z well before Funimation ever got their mitts on it. To this day, I cannot stand to listen to the horrible re-written/edited/dubbed english versions. They lost so many of the puns, for starters. How many people know that Bloomer's family are all named after underwear? Or that the Namek are mostly snailbased names if you add an "s" (Es Cargo, SNail,...). Freezer, Cooler, and the five Ginyu named after dairy products. Saiyajin named after vegetables....

I love so many of the characters. Vegetta is my fav, though. My wife actually got me into it, and her fav is Piccolo.

I think the strongest elements in the show are very subtle: Kuririn's superhuman courage, Vegetta's love for his family, and most especially the way villains keep reforming and becoming good guys (Oolong, Tenshihan, Piccolo, Yamcha, and of course Vegetta), a theme later duplicated by Joss Whedon in Buffy.

When I was younger I loved the show and didn't mind the ridiculously drug fight scenes, the groaning, the growling, the moaning, and the fact that all the cool characters were replaced by these lameos called Sayians. Now when I look back on it, I don't see how I liked the show. DB is the best out of the three. DBZ is bareable at parts, and DBGT is just a disgrace to all anime.

I liked Dragonball...but not Dragonball Z.

Dragonball I found very amusing, lots of puns and risque humor (esp the Jap version)...dragonball Z though just didnt catch my interest..they spent too much time powering up for an attack. I felt like Goku would spend like 5 episodes charging some kinda energy ball.

Doesn't stop me from posting this though

lol. The only thing I like about this show, is that it's called "Dragonballz." So, what do they do with these "dragonballz" once they somehow get them off the dragons? Hmmmm?

Understandable. Being a fan of the original version of something ends in disgust and/or outrage 9 times out of 10 when it comes to seeing a dissected, mutated version of it. The success of japanese animation outside of Japan owes a lot to the Dragon Ball series being dubbed (the popularity of the likes of DBZ, Pokemon and earlier series such as Sailor Moon raised awareness of the potential market), but as a result of being reasonably early in it got the same treatment that most televised stuff aimed at kids did (crappy voice work, censoring, new inferior sound track).

I have to admit that my first viewing experience of Dragon Ball was through the dub version of DBZ, though for years before I was aware of the franchise. I remember back in high school I saw a japanese exchange student that had his books plastered in DBZ pictures. "Hey, he's a Dragon Ball fan" I said to my best friend, who was like "...What?". Years later when DBZ's dub aired in New Zealand that clueless friend became the biggest DB fan I ever met in real life.

So while I automatically found aspects of the dub offensive (terrible music, weird VAs) without even having seen the original, I watched regardless, and grew familiar with those voices (and later the Funimation voices). Thus when I heard the original seiyuu I was weirded out that the likes of Goku still sounded like a child, having kept the same actress right through the series.
I've seen every [dub] episode of DBZ and DBGT and most of the movies, though none of the original DB (though I've intended on watching it for years), and don't collect any merchandise, play the games or view DB websites/forums very often, so I guess you'd say I'm a fan, but not a die hard fan. I do enjoy watching my brother (who is a bigger fan than I am) play Burst Limit though. My fave character would probably be Piccolo, though Goku (such a good guy), future Trunks (cool) and Vegeta (badass) are prodding at me right now. I also like Gotenks because he (they?) looks very cool and has interesting techniques.

Have you guys seen the TV special that aired in Japan last year? What did you think? I enjoyed it but felt they could have done a little more with it (as a result the surprise that is Table felt kind of pointless).

We're talking about the live action Dragon Ball (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43712) film (the new one - DB Evolution, not the old Chinese or Korean ones ;D) over in the movies forum, by the way (along with the Bebop (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56440) adap).

I really liked the section of DragonballZ that I watched for awhile but I must say the fight scenes seemed painfully long considering that I was watching only two epis a day with commercials on tv at the time.
