View Full Version : Terry O'Quinn appreciation thread

Come on, he deserves it. His acting is just simply amazing. From Walkabout to TNPLH it just strikes you. Inspired by Vonne's poll, I decided to go on the hunt for the greatest WTF moments on lost. Needless to say I watched all the Locke episodes.
Any other actor or character couldn't get away with yelling "This is my destiny, I'm supposed to do this." while in a wheelchair. If any of the other actors in Lost did that, I'd honestly just laugh.
Terry O'Quinn deserves this "Appreciation" thread. Its long overdue. But I guess he got an emmy. I'm rooting for an Oscar next :nanabobo:

You said it. We've got various Locke appreciation threads, but surprisingly enough, not one for the actor (until now).
From everything I've read, Terry is a helluva guy.

I've read some interviews. On the fuselage he actually replies a lot to peoples questions( Right Sgt?). He really tells it like it is. Just seems like a real great and open guy.

Terry O'Quinn is awesome. I loved his knife throwing demo on the S1 dvd's.

He's replied to me in the past, but I want to say he hasn't been as active lately. Last time I checked, he hasn't responded to anything in several months.
Still, the fact that he was active at all is pretty awesome, I think.

I imagine finding out he was in the coffin left him a tad sad. I can't imagine T'OQ being bitter about it (he seems far too modest a guy for that) but I could certainly see him feeling a bit melancholy about the possibility of a reduced role on the show, not to mention the possibility of no redemption for John Locke.
Well, I find it interesting that on Locke's message board there's the Boobophiles and the Webelos, but regardless of which side of the divide you're on regarding Locke's intelligence or his sanity, everyone seems to highly regard T'OQ as an actor. Even the friends of mine who watch the show with me who think the worst of Locke as a character view T'OQ as among the best of the actors. That's definitely different than a character like Jack, where there's a pretty seismic divide not only among those who like or dislike Jack as a character but also a similar divide among those who like (and quite a few, like myself, who dislike) Matthew Fox's skills as an actor.
Basically: whether you love Locke or you hate him or you're simply mildly amused by him, you gotta love Terry. :)

I totally agree! I love the guy!
I read an interview once (I can't remember where - sorry, it was a while ago) where he was asked what he would take with him if he was marooned on a real desert island. His response was that he would take his wife, all the books he had been wanting to read over the years, and Josh Holloway to keep his wife entertained while he read all his books. I thought that was so cool !

Really? That's nice. That's wonderful. So, Josh should have a thread also, talking about how he's such a nice guy, too.
Terry O'Quin is definitely a great actor. His squints and twinkles, throws knives (kidding). He is, yes, a great actor.

I was going to recommend changing this kind of a fanclub from just T'OQ (who is awesome) into an "awesome actors of Lost" fanclub period, in which Josh Holloway and Micheal Emerson in particular would be added to T'OQ's name on the list of eternal greatness. But then I realize you'd have to include Henry Ian Cusick and Naveen Andrews and Jorge and Dominic and the list grew to the point where I'd basically just be advocating an anti-Matthew Fox club, and we already have S.M.A.C.K.J.A.C.K for that ;)
But yes, I've noticed T'OQ not only is an incredible actor but also a great man, as evidenced by the sheer number of fellow castmates who have expressed adoration for him. I remember Michael and Josh in particular both had good things to say about working with him, and Jorge's written plenty of praise in his comments in The Fuselage. And T'OQ always returns the favor, he's one of the more effusive in continually praising (most) his castmates. (Gotta love Fox being one of the exceptions to that rule.)
To be fair, she's almost every womans favourite.
She is, huh?

Oh dear, there are so many responses to that quote that I don't know where to start - so I'll just keep quiet :D
Uh oh was that Ozanna bewildered? :) Never thought I would see the day. :wave2:
Focus on Sawyer, all will be well.
Back to Terry O'Quinn, the man is an impeccable actor and as well as a fine gentleman.
We are blessed to enjoy his skills in each and every episode.

Back on topic, Terry's pretty hot (in the 50-60 yo category). In great shape too!
Did anybody catch this in the latest Terry interview up at DarkUFO?
Q: There is a rumor that your colleague Matthew Fox is the only cast member who knows what the solution of the mystery in Lost will be? Is that true?“
A: I have no idea. I wouldn't be surprised if he thinks he does. If he came and told me "I know what's gonna happen“, I would say "Ok, what?“, and then he would say "Well, I can't tell you“, and I'd say "Well, I don't believe you.“

Alright. I'm on the move to meet Terry O'Quinn in person. Himself and Jorge Garcia are in Dublin at the moment. Terry is filming a movie, or something and he is being interviewed tonight on RTE.
If I catch a glimpse of him by standing outside in the pouring rain, I will be satisfied. But I can't go because its all the way in town. He was also in the shop across the street from where my Sister works signing autographs, and my sister also works near Trinity college and walks through it every day and missed Jorge Garcia who was supposedly there.
I personally am *trying* to get his autograph. So I'm on the lookout for him all week.

So I watched the interview tonight. It was very interesting (I only wished the host had of shown an interest in Lost and maybe we could have got more relevant questions.).
They spent about 20 minutes talking to some overaged boyband who is on the rebound and some big brother star who is as smart as a cardboard box, instead of an Emmy winning actor in one of the most current hottest shows in the world. That kind of peed me off.
When Terry got on screen they showed his "Its a place where miracles happen" scene. I liked that!
He also said thank you to the audience for applausing. He says he likes to play Locke...but wouldn't want to be him. :p
Before Lost he was bankrupt.
He keeps knives by his bed, Sgt, and claims to know alot about them. :D
He met his wife and they ran away together. :D He says the Island is a great place to work, but its very small and he'd go crazy if he wasn't on Lost. They ended up giving him a crest of arms about his Irish family. They didn't talk about his emmy win at all.
And thats all!
Interesting stuff he mentioned Lostaway. Do you know if there is video online anywhere of the interview? I can't blame him for what he said about Locke as far as liking him but not wanting to be him.
:thankyous

Listened to a radio interview today. Terry was on it, this time we had a lost fan host asking questions.
He said he'd run for an emmy again, but he thinks other people need a time to shine and truly deserve it, especially Michael Emerson and Henry Ian Cusick, Naveen, and Josh. (He was moving onto more names but the presenter cut him off.)
How good to see an actor actually mentioning his fellow actors in a flattering light. Although most of them are very supportive of each other.
Highly OT here, but I was watching "The Legend of Zorro" the other night when who should turn up as a Pinkerton's Agent, but Ben. I had my eyes closed (!) but who could not know that voice and my daughter bursting out laughing and saying "Mum, there's Ben !" Just a bit of trivia.

The important thing there is that he named four brilliant actors and refused to name Matthew Fox.
I'm going to simply ignore the fact that Fox couldn't be nominated for that category anyway, and instead presume it's a deliberate attempt by my beloved T'OQ to leave Fox the hell off his special list. I'm still waiting and dreaming for that special moment when Sayid, Sawyer, Desmond, Ben, and Locke all beat the stuffing out of Jack in an episode of Lost. Now that's a real Tivo moment! :)

Sure, why not?
I've noticed subtle hints in regards to several actor's testimonies of working on LOST, not just T'OQ. Dominic (back when Charlie was alive) was always effusive in praising Evangeline, Josh, T'OQ, and a couple other actors, but he rarely (if ever!) gave MF a compliment. Evangeline works with MF far more than most others on the show, but she tends to compliment Josh far more than MF. T'OQ always calls out the superb performances of Michael Emerson (it's clear those two are buds) and Josh (Josh frequently returns the favor.) On The Fuselage, Jorge and T'OQ are the two who actually still post, and both have complimented each other. Again, comments regarding MF are rare and cryptic, like T'OQ's recent not-so-subtle mocking of MF "knowing Lost's ending."
EDIT: Also, you both should consider joining Jackless, just because.

I have to bump this thread to mention how amazing I though Terry was during his conversation with Christian Shepard in the underground cavern with the wheel. I don't care whether you think Locke is a hero or a fool, or a bit of both, but I think that scene was one of his best performances.

I have to say that there were more than a few times I wanted to reach out and touch my screen, Locke was just breaking my heart tonight.
