Episode 2 - Confirmed Dead

Written by Drew Goddard and Brian K. Vaughn

Directed by Stephen Williams

________________

[The episode opens with audio static. It then changes to video from an underwater camera accompanied by the sound of sonar pinging. The camera is attached to an unmanned vehicle. It is a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). There are 2 of them searching the ocean floor.]

ROV OPERATOR: Sorry, Ron. Drone's got nothing but seafood at 5000 meters below. You picking up anything with yours?

RON: Zip. Trying to get her to peek over this ridge as soon as I can. Sonar’s pinging up something now. Hey you wanna switch feeds?

ROV OPERATOR: Roger that.

[The camera view switches from ROV 01 to ROV 02.]

ROV OPERATOR: I'm headed on a bearing of about 137 from the coordinates we pulled off our guy's map. But don't hold your breath.

ROV OPERATOR: Magnetometer's picking up a hell of a lot of anomalies around here.

[Pinging speeds up.]

RON: Chest full of doubloons?

ROV OPERATOR: Keep dreaming, Ron. Let's swing round on the next grid and recalibrate.

[The camera from ROV 02 moves up and the tail section of a plane is seen. The upright tail section has the Oceanic logo.]

ROV OPERATOR: Ar…are you getting this?

RON: What? What’s up?

[The ROV continues to move up the side of the airplane to the fuselage.]

ROV OPERATOR: It's...it's an airplane. Oh my god! It's Oceanic 815!

[Scans along body of the aircraft which is separated from the cabin. The cabin is lying, perpendicular, on top of the body. The video changes to a shot of a salvage ship on the ocean's surface, then a map showing Australia, Indonesia and the Indian Ocean. A woman’s voice is heard talking as the footage is shown and we realize that the images are from a newscast.]

NEWS WOMAN: This haunting footage comes to us from the Christiane I. For more than 2 months it's been scouring the depths of the Sunda Trench off Bali in search of the remains of sunken trading ships.

[The camera pulls back and as the newswoman continues we see a television.]

NEWS WOMAN: Late last night the Christiane deployed 2 remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, that verified what the National Transportation Safety Board had long feared, that the commercial aircraft...[unintelligible] after departing Sydney, Australia September 22nd, 2004...(unintelligible) found. (unintelligible) confirms that Oceanic flight 815 (unintelligible) crash at sea. Even with this tragic discovery (unintelligible) without any sense of closure. These tremendous depths...

[Voice fades out. The rest of the newscast can't be heard. During the news cast the camera continues to pull back. A woman is seen going over behind the TV and opening the blinds of a window. A man is watching the TV. Text appears telling us that the location of the man and woman is Essex, Massachusetts.]

WOMAN: (never seen above shoulders) How do you want your eggs, Dan? So what happened...they find that missing plane?

[Dan is sobbing.]

WOMAN: Dan? Dan? Dan, why are you so upset?

[Woman comes to the chair that Dan is sitting in and puts her left hand on the wing of the chair showing a wedding ring.]

DANIEL: I don’t know….

[Cut to interior of a helicopter. The helicopter appears to be caught in some kind of electrical storm and in trouble. Frank, the pilot, is having difficulty controlling the chopper.]

WOMAN ON HELICOPTER: (yelling) I can't find my vest!

MAN ON HELICOPTER: (yelling) Check under your seat!

WOMAN ON HELICOPTER: I already did!

PILOT: Get ready!

MAN ON HELICOPTER: Here just take mine!

[The man gives her what appears to be a bulletproof vest..]

PILOT: Everybody out now!

MAN ON HELICOPTER: (yelling at Dan.) Hey genius! Go!

[The man pulls Dan and pushes him out the door of the helicopter. Dan holds on and tries to climb back in.]

DANIEL: No! No! No!

MAN ON HELICOPTER: Go!

DANIEL: No! No! No!

[The man pushes again and Dan falls out of the helicopter. The parachute opens and descends. Looking up Dan sees the chopper from the bottom up making it look upside down. Eventually, Dan comes crashing through trees then hits the ground hard, yet is not hurt. It's still raining heavily. He pulls out a gun and then puts it in his waistband at his back. Jack and Kate come running out of the jungle.]

DANIEL: (breathing heavily) Ugh! Ah! Ah!

[It is raining heavily. Dan rolls over, gets to his feet, looks around frantically then hears something coming toward him. He throws off his helmet and turns on a yellow transponder. He pulls out a gun and then puts it in his back waistband. Jack and Kate come running out of the jungle.]

DANIEL: (throwing off helmet) Hey there. Are you Jack?

JACK: Yeah. I’m Jack. Who are you?

DANIEL: I’m Daniel Faraday. I’m here to rescue you.

[Switch to Jack, Kate and Dan walking through the jungle. Dan is leading.]

JACK: Hey Dan? The chopper...how many of you were on it?

DANIEL: Uh...4 including me.

KATE: So what happened to the rest of them?

DANIEL: Yeah, yeah I uh...I have no idea, I don't how many of 'em were able to get out before it went down, I just, I jumped and I lost my uh, what do you call it, my my pack, and my phone was in my pack, if I had my phone I would just uh...

KATE: We have a phone.

[Jack pulls out the satellite phone and hands it to Kate. She shows it to Dan.]

DANIEL: Hmmm…you have a phone….ah!

[Kate hands Dan the phone.]

DANIEL: Thank you.

[Dan dials a number.]

MINKOWSKI: Minkowski.

DANIEL: Hey, George! It’s Daniel.

MINKOWSKI: Dan!

DANIEL: Yeah!

MINKOWSKI: The chopper com went dead! What the hell happened up there?

DANIEL: Yeah, I dunno, George, it was...there was an electrical storm, all the instruments they just...I think they went down. But listen I made...I made contact with some of the survivors and, uh...we were just uh...

MINKOWSKI: (interrupting) Dan, am I on speaker?

[Dan turns to Kate and Jack.]

DANIEL: Would you just me just….just 1 second?

[Dan walks away turns off speakerphone while continuing his conversation with Minkowski. Kate talks quietly with Jack.]

KATE: Don't worry. Naomi covered for us. They don't know what Locke did to her.

JACK: You sure about that?

[Jack nods toward Dan. Kate sees the gun in the back waistband of Dan's pants. Dan finishes his conversation on the phone and returns to Kate and Jack.]

DANIEL: Okay, okay. So...the boat hasn't heard from anybody else yet but uh, their GPS transponders, my team and I are all wearing these, the transponders will send the...the locations back to the ship, and then the ship will send all locations back into the phones. Uh [Looking at the phone] oh there we are, there's my signal right there, and hopefully we'll get the signals for the rest of the team soon. Will you help me find ‘em?

JACK: Absolutely.

DANIEL: Okay. Thank you. Hey, where are the rest of your people?

KATE: Most of them are back at the beach.

DANIEL: (a little confused) Most of them?

[Cut to interior of jungle. Still raining heavily however it is now day. With eyes closed Locke is standing still with his face facing the sky and he is allowing the rain to cascade over his face. Hurley and Vincent approach Locke.]

HURLEY: Dude. What’s wrong with you? Yer gonna get struck by lightning.

LOCKE: The storm's about to pass, Hugo.

HURLEY: It's a friggin' monsoon, we gotta...

[The rain stops abruptly. Hurley looks around amazed and Vincent shakes off excess water. The flora appears dry though everyone is wet.]

LOCKE: (yelling to the group) Let’s go!

[The group resumes the trek. Most are armed with weapons. Sawyer catches up with Locke with Hurley following right behind.]

SAWYER: Why you going East? Thought you said the Barracks were due South.

LOCKE: Because James we have to make a little detour first.

SAWYER: Detour to what?

LOCKE: There’s a cabin I need to go to.

HURLEY: (pointing) I thought the cabin was back that way.

LOCKE: What did you say Hugo?

HURLEY: Um. I uh, thought you were talking about the airplane cabin.

[Locke looks at Hurley in astonishment then Ben does the same.]

SAWYER: Why are we wasting our time going to some shack anyway?

LOCKE: Because we're supposed to.

SAWYER: Right. Like you were supposed to throw a knife into that Naomi chick's back.

LOCKE: Uh huh.

SAWYER: You mind telling us who you're getting your orders from, Colonel Kurtz?

LOCKE: I got 'em from Walt.

[Hurley, Claire with Aaron, Alex, Karl, Danielle, Ben, Sawyer and some Red Shirts look at Locke bewildered. ]

[Cut to view of the ocean. Sayid is looking for a boat off in the horizon. Juliet approaches Sayid.]

JULIET: Jack still isn't back. Anything?

SAYID: No. But it's a big island. The freighter could be approaching from the other side.

JULIET: That’s the spirit.

SAYID: Juliet, you lived amongst the Others. Why would Ben say the people coming here intend to do us harm?

JULIET: Because he's a liar. And he's trying to scare us, that's what Ben does. Or, because the people coming here intend to do us harm. How many guns do you have left?

[Sayid stares at Juliet. ]

[Cut back to interior of jungle. Dan is trying to obtain GPS signals from the sat phone. Kate sees a large metal case in the underbrush.]

KATE: Hey...that from your chopper?

DANIEL: Uh...n...yeah yeah, that uh, yeah, they..heh, reduced the weight load when we started going down. [Chuckling unhappily] Guess that's why they pushed me out.

[Kate and Jack open the case. Jack pulls out a gas mask and other parcels with red radiation symbols on them.]

JACK: What’s this for?

DANIEL: Uh. I'm...not in charge of, uh...packing so...uh…

JACK: You’re not huh?

DANIEL: (trying to change the subject by pointing) Um, we should uh...

JACK: Hey Daniel.

DANIEL: Mmmm hmmm?

JACK: Why did you bring the gun?

DANIEL: Uh...as a precaution.

(Dan puts his right had behind his back toying with the gun in his waistband..)

JACK: Precaution against what?

DANIEL: Uh...okay. See...um...rescuing you and your people? Can't really say it's our...primary objective.

JACK: Then what is?

[Dan pauses as the phone beeps. It has made contact with another GPS signal.]

DANIEL: It's Miles...it's Miles! Come on!

[Cut back to jungle interior where Locke and Sawyer are bickering as they walk.]

SAWYER: What the hell do you mean you saw Walt? In a dream?

LOCKE: No dream, it was Walt. Only...taller.

SAWYER: Taller? What, like a giant? Okay...what exactly did Walt tell you?

LOCKE: He said I had work to do. That I had to stop this woman, Naomi, from bringing the rest of her people here.

SAWYER: What...you didn't ask any follow-up questions?

LOCKE: Ben had shot me and left me for dead. Walt saved my life, so I pretty much took him at his word.

SAWYER: (pointing at Ben) He shot you? Yet here you are fit as a fiddle tromping through the jungle.

[Locke stops walking then pulls up his shirt. The bullet wound is fully visible, angry dark red with a darkened hole in the middle. He shows Sawyer his front then his back.]

LOCKE: The bullet went in one side, came out the other.

[Everyone looks dazed while Ben looks a little guilty or concerned for his welfare.]

LOCKE: I'd probably be dead if I still had a kidney there. Anything else?

[Sawyer is amazed. Locke nods his head and proceeds with the trek. Everyone follows.]

[Cut to Dan, Jack and Kate hunting down the signal from Miles. They leave the jungle and come to a very rocky part of shoreline. Jack looks and sees Miles lying still on the rocks with his chute blowing in the wind. The man's helmet is half off his head.]

JACK: Down there!

DANIEL: Hey Miles! Miles!

[Jack jumps down rock to roc toward Miles who is on his back looking dead however he has his right hand under his back. Jack gently takes off his helmet.]

KATE: Is he dead?

[Quickly Miles pulls his right arm from under his back with a gun in his hand aiming at Jack.]

MILES: Back up handsome.

DANIEL: Wait! Whoa whoa whoa Miles. Take it easy, it's okay. They're here to help us. It's okay Miles, they're just trying to help!

[Kate, standing close to Dan, considers taking his gun but Miles realizes what she is contemplating.]

MILES: Hey! Back away from him. Hands where I can see 'em.

JACK: Kate, it's alright! It's okay.

MILES: So you're Kate. You wanna tell me where Naomi is?

KATE: What?

MILES: Naomi, the woman you killed! Where is she?

[Flashback to shot of a suburban street. Houses are near each other and there are cars parked along the street. Subtext on the screen states that it is Inglewood, California. A car pulls up to a house and parks showing Miles as the driver. The radio is playing a news broadcast.]

NEWSCASTER: For the friends and family of the passengers of Oceanic 815, it can only be described as the worst-case scenario. With the plane accounted for, and a salvage mission unlikely, authorities are confirming all 324 passengers dead.

[Miles looks at himself in the rearview mirror, turns off the engine then gets out. He takes a brown leather suitcase from the trunk, proceeds to the front door knocks. A black woman in her late 40’s to mid 50's answers the door.]

MILES: Ms. Gardner? I’m Miles Straume. We spoke on the phone earlier?

MS. GARDNER: Oh…oh. Please come in?.

[Miles enters the house and notices a lot of family pictures on the walls.]

MILES: Which room is it?

MS. GARDNER: It's upstairs at the end of the hall.

MILES: I get paid in advance. 200, cash only.

MS. GARDNER: You told me 100 over...

MILES: That was before my buddy at the police station told me your grandson was murdered. It's gonna be 200.

MS. GARDNER: Fine.

[As Ms. Gardner goes to the kitchen to get the money, Miles sits and begins unpacking the suitcase. He pulls out various black pieces and puts together what looks like a hand held vacuum cleaner. Mrs. Gardner gives him the money which he immediately counts.]

MILES: No matter what you hear don't come up.

[Miles goes upstairs to the room and puts the machine on a table and turns it on. It isn't a vacuum, but some type of ghost busting apparatus. It whirs making eerie noises. We are shown the room from wall to wall. Miles sits on the bed and goes into a trance-like state sensing something. He then looks around the room.]

MILES: You're not doing your grandmother any good staying here, man. You're causing her a lot of pain. Pffft. I want to go downstairs and tell her you've gone, but the only way I'm gonna be able to do that...is if you tell me where it is. So where is it?

[Something falls near a bookcase. Miles moves the bookcase aside, opens an air vent and finds a paper bag with money and narcotics in it. He takes the money, then takes a tiny plastic bag out, looks at the yellow contents and sniffs at the bag. He puts the plastic bag back into the paper bag and returns the paper to the vent. After moving the bookcase back he turns off his machine. As he prepares to leave the room he hesitates and turns back.]

MILES: You can go now.

[Miles goes back down the stairs.]

MS. GARDNER: Did it work?

MILES: Yeah. He's at peace now.

[Miles looks at the family photos along the wall of the staircase and pulls some money from his pocket.]

MILES: Here. You get a refund, half off. Wasn't as tricky as I thought.

[Ms. Gardner hugs Miles whose reaction is one of discomfort.]

MS. GARDNER: Thank you. Thank you.

[Cut back to Miles pointing his gun at jack on the rocky shore.]

DANIEL: Miles! Miles! Hey hey hey, what are you doing? What are you doing? These are good people!

MILES: Then why'd Naomi use the damn code? Yeah, you remember when she said tell my sister I love her, well she doesn't have a sister. That's what we're supposed to say if we get captured, have a gun to our heads. Like right now, Jack here would say "tell my sister I love her"! You get it?

JACK: We didn't kill your friend.

MILES: Then take me to her body.

DANIEL: Miles...what about Charlotte, what about Frank?

MILES: Take me to Naomi!

KATE: Listen, Naomi was killed but not by us. It was...it was a man by the name of John Locke. He's not with us anymore.

MILES: Kate, seriously, if I have to ask you again...

KATE: (yelling) Even if I took you to her body you wouldn't know what happened...

MILES: I'll know! Now take me to her body!

[Cut to clearing in the jungle. Locke and his group are resting. Ben, Alex and Karl are sitting near each other. Everyone is filling his or her bottles with cool, fresh water.]

BEN: Alex. Alex, hey!

ALEX: What?

BEN: Something I need to tell you.

KARL: Keep your mouth shut, Mr. Linus.

BEN: (sarcastically) Karl! Now if you're gonna sleep with my daughter, I insist you call me Ben.

[Karl pulls the gun and walks toward Ben however Sawyer intervenes. He hands Karl a bottle of water.]

SAWYER: Easy kid, guy's just trying to get in your head. Go take a walk or something.

[Karl and Alex walk away together.]

BEN: Mind if I ask you a question, James?

SAWYER: Yeah, I do!

BEN: Why'd you leave Kate behind?

SAWYER: Wasting your time, Yoda.

BEN: I know it's not pleasant but let's face it, you really don't stand a chance now...

[Sawyer grabs and pulls Ben to his feet and angrily confronts him.]

SAWYER: Chance of what?

BEN: (in a demeaning tone of voice) James. Look at yourself. Yes, on this island you're brave, daring, handsome...you're someone. But if you left with them...back in the real world a low-life scam artist like you could never compete with a 1st class surgeon. I think Kate was really upset when you made your choice to come with us. Thank God she has Jack there to comfort...

[Sawyer begins to kick and beat Ben.]

LOCKE: James! Don't!

SAWYER: Don't what! Anyone wanna tell me why we're keeping this guy alive?

[Sawyer continues to beat Ben.]

LOCKE: We're keeping him alive because he's been on this island a lot longer than any of us. Because he has information we need. And because apart from his mouth...he's completely harmless.

SAWYER: His mouth put that hole in your gut?

LOCKE: Okay, James. Let's execute him, right here right now, in front of his daughter!

[Alex looks on in horror. Sawyer looks down and ponders a moment and looks toward Hurley who shakes his head no. Sawyer tosses the rope leading Ben over to Locke and stalks away. Ben, all bloodied, rolls over on his back relieved the beating has stopped.]

SAWYER: It's only a matter of time before he gets us, Johnny. And I bet he's already figured out how he's gonna do it. So you walk him.

[Cut to Naomi’s body. Miles is kneeling over her body whispering to himself. Dan, Jack and Kate watch from a distance. Dan is holding a gun on Kate and Jack.]

KATE: (to Jack) What is he doing?

DANIEL: The light! It's strange out here isn't it? It's kinda like, it doesn't scatter...quite right.

KATE: (watching Dan’s gun) Dan, your name's Dan, right? Listen, Dan. I know that you don't want anybody to get hurt, right? So why don't you just put that away.

DANIEL: Uh...because um, Miles...would kill me.

KATE: We're just trying to help...

JACK: Kate, you're wasting your breath. Why don't we just let this play out and see what happens, Okay?

[Jack discreetly winks at Kate. Miles walks back over to the small group.]

MILES: They didn't kill her. Happened like they said it did.

[The satellite phone begins beeping, showing another GPS signal found.]

DANIEL: Hey...it's Charlotte, only 3 kilometers from here.

MILES: Alright then, let's go get her.

[Miles begins to leave but turns back when he realizes Kate and Jack standing still.]

MILES: I said let's go.

JACK: You need to put the guns down.

MILES: What?

JACK: Put the guns down.

MILES: Now why would I do that?

JACK: Because our friends are out in the jungle right now holding a gun at your head, and his head. So I'm gonna forget about the misunderstanding, just put the guns down.

MILES: (sarcastically) Come on, how stupid do you think I...

[3 shots are fired from the jungle. Sayid comes out from the foliage followed by Juliet, both are holding guns aimed at Miles. Dan offers Kate his gun. Jack reaches out toward Miles.]

JACK: I dunno, Miles. How stupid are ya?

[Flashback to a desert where sand is blowing. Subtext indicates Medenine, Tunisia. A 4x4 drives up to a campsite with people doing various tasks. Two women get out of the truck. One woman is Charlotte. She walks a bit and picks up a newspaper named "Le Journal de Tunisie" . The headline reads (in French) 815: Retrouve. A picture on the front page shows the sunken wreckage of an Oceanic airplane.]

TRANSLATOR: How many different languages do you have to read that in before you believe it's true?

CHARLOTTE: How man different languages are there?

[As they walk further into the camp, they encounter a man who stands in their path speaking French ]

TRANSLATOR: He wants to know if we are lost.

CHARLOTTE: Remind him the people in our line of work are terrible at keeping secrets. I know about the dig.

[The woman begins translating in French to the man however he interrupts her and tries again to block their path.]

TRANSLATOR: He said the site is closed.

CHARLOTTE: Then tell him to open it.

[Charlotte pulls out a wad of cash and thrusts at the man. She continues walking past him until she comes upon a partially excavated area with bones. The bones are the skeleton of a large animal. It is lying barely covered in the sand. Archeological markers and tools surround the area. Charlotte gets on her knees.]

TRANSLATOR: Dinosaur?

CHARLOTTE: Not by a few million years. It's an Ursus Maritimus.

TRANSLATOR: Wait, Ursus (pauses) as in bear?

CHARLOTTE: As in (pauses) polar bear. (smiling impishly)

TRANSLATOR: Charlotte we’re in the desert! This is a hoax, right?

[Charlotte pulls out a hammer and begins banging away roughly at the soil near the skull of the bear. The man comes over speaking in French excitedly.]

TRANSLATOR: He wants to know what you’re doing with the hammer.

CHARLOTTE: (does not stop) Excavating.

[The man continues angrily speaking in French. Charlotte uncovers something made of leather with a medallion on it. She brushes the sand off of it. The man is still talking in French.]

TRANSLATOR: Is that a collar?

[The medallion has the Hydra station logo on it. Charlotte grins as though she has found a treasure chest.]

[Cut to Charlotte hanging upside down in a tree. Her parachute has gotten snagged on branches. She is dangling 25 or more feet in the air by the cords above a large stream. She struggles for a while then pulls the release handle and falls into the water. When she surfaces she takes off her helmet, gasps for air, tries to get her bearings, looks around smiling like child in a candy store. Then she sees Locke and his group.]

CHARLOTTE: Hi.

LOCKE: Hi yourself.

[Cut to the interior of the jungle. Dan is leading towards Charlotte’s signal on the sat phone.]

JULIET: We were worried when you didn't get back so we went out to the cockpit and tracked you from there.

JACK: Thanks for that, for what it's worth.

KATE: Somebody could have told me that the cavalry were here.

JACK: I gave you that wink. (he winks)

[Kate and Juliet look at each other and smile.]

SAYID: What are your names?

DANIEL: Uh...I'm Daniel Faraday, and this is Miles...

MILES: (interrupting) Don't tell him my last name.

DANIEL: I guess it's just Miles.

SAYID: What do you do for a living, Daniel?

DANIEL: I'm a physicist. I mean, I guess you could call me a physicist. I don't really like being pigeonholed into one...

MILES: (interrupting) Dan, I swear to God...you say one more word I'm gonna break your fingers.

SAYID: And what do you do, Miles?

MILES: (sarcastically) I collect soil samples.

SAYID: Oh that's nice. Well maybe you can help me. You say you're not here on a rescue mission, and the world at large believes us to be dead. But here we are alive and well, and you don't seem remotely surprised to see us.

MILES: (sarcastically) Oh my God. You guys were on Oceanic Flight 815. Wow! That better?

[Cut to Charlotte sitting and talking with Locke and his group. The group looks at her warily.]

CHARLOTTE: I can't believe you're alive. How many of you are there?

HURLEY: Why do you wanna know? (baby cooing in background)

CHARLOTTE: Why wouldn't I wanna know?

HURLEY: 48 of us survived the crash. That's not counting the tail-section. They're pretty much all dead now...

LOCKE: (warningly) Hugo.

CHARLOTTE: So you've all been living here this entire time. (to Claire) Is that your baby?

CALIRE: (nodding) Yeah, this is Aaron.

CHARLOTTE: Did you have him here on the island?

CALIRE: Uh huh.

CHARLOTTE: That’s amazing.

[Everyone is resting and re-filling their water bottles. Ben is sitting close to Karl and looks cunningly at the gun tucked into Karl's pants.]

CHARLOTTE: Well, I've about a million more questions I want to ask you, but they can wait until we get you back to the freighter. We all got one of these transponders, so if we just sit tight, they're gonna be here soon, okay?

LOCKE: This team of yours...how many of you are there?

CHARLOTTE: 4 including me.

LOCKE: And what happened to your helicopter?

CHARLOTTE: I dunno, the pilot was trying to put it down.

LOCKE: Where?

CHARLOTTE: (defensively) I dunno. I had to jump, Chaos. I'm lucky to be alive!

LOCKE: Get up, you're coming with us.

CHARLOTTE: Wh...what? We need to stay where we are so they can find us.

LOCKE: See, there's your problem. We don't wanna be found.

[Cut to jungle interior. Sayid now has the satellite phone tracking Charlotte's signal. He is pressing buttons and Miles is following closely trying to keep up.]

MILES: I wouldn't mess around with that if I were you.

SAYID: It can't hurt to try and call someone else.

MILES: Oh...it can hurt.

[The beeps from the sat phone are getting faster and closer together. Everyone stops.]

MILES: What’d you do?

SAYID: Your friend, Charlotte, she's moving. And she's moving fast.

JACK: (concerned) She's running from something.

[They all started running toward the signal then they all stop.]

SAYID: According to this, she's right here.

DANIEL: Charlotte! Charlotte!

[Jack is annoyed that Dan is calling for Charlotte. There is the rustling of foliage and they look in that direction.]

KATE: (pointing a gun) Over there. Over there!

[Vincent comes from the underbrush with the GPS transponder tied around his neck. He sits and scratches himself.]

KATE: Vincent.

JACK: (to Miles and Dan) Locke’s got her.

[Dan Miles and Sayid look concerned. ]

[Cut to shot of a tiny toy airplane falling to the bottom of a fish tank. Frank, the helicopter pilot, has just dropped the plane in the tank. He is in the Caribbean Dreams Island Travel and Touring office. Subtext shows that it is Eleuthera, The Bahamas. A television is on and a voice is heard talking about the airplane wreckage. He gets up to get a better look at the television.]

News Reporter: We want to caution our viewers that the images they are about to see are graphic in nature. Viewer discretion is advised. Authorities have released dramatic footage of the sunken remains of Oceanic Flight 815. The National Transportation Safety Board has set up a hotline for family members of the Oceanic victims. The NTSB has begun the victim identification process.

[A picture of the pilot is shown followed by underwater footage of the dead pilot who is still strapped in his seat. Frank looks astonished and tries to refocus on what he is both watching and hearing. There is a hotline number at the bottom of the television screen. It is 888-548-0034.]

NEWS REPORTER[color]: We have confirmation that this is the pilot, Captain Seth Norris. In a statement, the NTSB said that quote..."Due to the [unintelligible]...depth...

[Frank bows his head in disbelief. The television picture starts to get lost and only static is seen or heard. Frank raps the side of the television set and the picture and audio is back.]

[color=#ff506d] NEWS REPORTER[ : ...recovery of the bodies will be next to impossible. We can only hope that identification will provide closure to the families of the victims." Unquote.

[Frank looks at the hands of the body shown on the screen, focusing on the left hand. He grabs the phone and dials the hotline number.]

OCEANIC OPERATOR: National Transportation Safety Board, Oceanic Hotline.

FRANK: Yeah, let me speak to your supervisor.

OCEANIC OPERATOR: Yes sir, are you a family member of the deceased?

FRANK: No, I'm not, but I got some information on the crash. May I please speak to your supervisor?

OCEANIC OPERATOR: Sir, if you could just tell me...

FRANK: (interrupting) Look I'm staring at the television right now! You're broadcasting footage of the wreckage and saying that that's the pilot Seth Norris!

OCEANIC OPERATOR: Yes, sir?

FRANK: Well...that's not him!

[The woman pauses for a moment then replies.]

OCEANIC OPERATOR: Please hold.

OCEANIC Supervisor: Who am I speaking with?

FRANK: Doesn't matter who I am. You're showing footage of Seth Norris and that's not him. Listen, this guy married his high school sweetheart at 19. He always wore his wedding ring and I'm telling you there's no ring on that body.

OCEANIC SUPERVISOR: Sir it's likely the ring fell off...

FRANK: (interrupting) I'm telling ya, that is not him.

OCEANIC SUPERVISOR : (defensively) How exactly is it that you know all about Captain Norris?

FRANK: Because I was supposed to be flying Oceanic 815 on that day.

[Cut to the helicopter pilot, Frank, is in a clearing He has a wound on his forehead and his right leg appears injured. He is climbing up the side of a steep hill. Upon reaching the top, he comes face to face with a bull that has a bell around its neck and moos at him. Frank is both astonished and perplexed. The bull walks away and Frank continues his ascent. He stands up only to stumble then fall on his back. He sits up, pulls out his satellite phone but it is broken. He then reaches into his right cargo pants pocket and pulls out an orange flare gun and a flare. He loads the gun then fires it into the air and collapses on his back. Switch to Charlotte, Locke and his group. They all see the flare.]

CHARLOTTE: (excited) That’s them. That’s somebody from my team!

[She turns is standing now and turns to look at the group. No one has reacted to her joy. She realizes that they are all staring at her both wary and concerned.]

CHARLOTTE: What's wrong with you people? We're here because of you! I just almost died jumping out of a helicopter because you called us for help!

HURLEY: Maybe we should go see who launched that flare.

CALIRE: Yeah I mean they could be hurt, John.

LOCKE: (interrupting) Claire She's lying. And whatever they came for it isn't us. We keep moving forward as planned.

SAWYER: Sure, who are we to argue with Taller Ghost Walt.

CHARLOTTE: You know what? You people do whatever you want!

[Charlotte is frustrated and turns to leave.]

LOCKE: I want you to come with us!

CHARLOTTE: (angrily) I'm not asking for permission! And if you think you're gonna bloody stop me from getting to my team...

[2 gunshots are heard. Both shots hit Charlotte in the chest and she falls to the ground. Everyone turns and finds Ben holding the gun that caused the shots. Karl notices that his gun is gone. Sawyer runs and tackles Ben and starts beating him mercilessly.]

SAWYER: What did you do? You son of a bitch!

[Locke goes to help Charlotte who isn’t moving. He checks for a pulse. Suddenly she starts gasping for air.]

CHARLOTTE: Vest!

LOCKE: What?

CHARLOTTE: Vest! Vest!

[Locke unzips Charlotte's jumpsuit. Underneath she is wearing the bulletproof vest that Miles gave her in the helicopter. Both bullets can be seen stuck in the chest area. Locke turns and glares at Ben.]

[Cut to Frank, who is unconscious. Jack, Dan and Miles are trying to revive him.]

DANIEL: Is he alive?

JACK: I’ve got a pulse.

DANIEL: Frank? Frank? Hey, hey...Frank?

[Frank wakes up, startled and looks around trying to get his bearings.]

MILES: You okay?

DANIEL: What happened?

FRANK: We got struck by lightning.

DANIEL: Frank, where's Charlotte?

FRANK: She bailed out, just before we went down. I don't know where she is.

MILES: Where's the chopper?

[Frank is still not fully lucid.]

FRANK: I saw a cow. (nods his head)

[Miles starts waving his hand in front of Frank’s face.]

MILES: Hey, hey (snaps his fingers) Lapidus, where is the chopper. (snapping again) Where did it crash?

FRANK: Crash? The hell kind of pilot do you think I am? I put her down safe and sound right over there.

[Frank points down the steep hill is ascended from . Everyone goes and sees that the helicopter is sitting on the ground in a small clearing. Kate, Jack and Sayid smile with the look of salvation.]

[Flashback to a man putting 4 pictures on a table: Daniel, Miles, Charlotte and Frank. The man is Matthew Abaddon, the same man who visits Hurley in Santa Rosa. He is with Naomi Dorrit. They are in a large vacant room except for one simple table.]

NAOMI: So this is the team?

ABADDON: You've familiarized yourself with their profiles?

NAOMI: Unfortunately, yes. With respect, these are the wrong people for a mission like this. None of them have field experience, military training. You can't just drop them in unprotected. It'll be a disaster.

ABADDON: They're not unprotected. They have you.

NAOMI: There's only so much I can do.

ABADDON: Your modesty is positively charming.

NAOMI: This is a high-risk covert op in unstable territory. It's dodgy enough without having to baby-sit a head case, ghost buster, anthropologist and a drunk.

ABADDON: To be fair he's also a pretty good pilot.

NAOMI: It's madness. What if we find survivors from 815?

ABADDON: There were no survivors.

NAOMI: Yes, I know, but what if there are survivors...

ABADDON: There were no survivors of Oceanic 815! Don't ask questions; just do what you were hired for. Every member of this team was selected for a specific purpose. Everything relies on you getting them in, getting them out, and preventing anyone from getting killed. Think you can do that?

NAOMI: Sure. Why not?

[Cut to the clearing around the helicopter. Kate and Dan are carrying Naomi's body, her eyes still open, on a stretcher toward the helicopter. Sayid is checking the helicopter for damage.]

JACK: Well?

SAYID: There's some minor damage, but the mechanical systems are intact.

JACK: So it'll fly then?

SAYID: Absolutely.

MILES: Can I have the phone now?

JACK: Tell you what...I'll give you the phone if you tell me what you people are doing here.

MILES: I'll tell you what we're doing here if you give me the phone.

[Jack hands Miles the sat phone. Miles walks a few steps away while punching in numbers.]

REGINA: Hello?

MILES: Regina, it's Miles. I need to talk to Minkowski.

REGINA: Minkowski can't come to the phone right now.

MILES: It's important! Go get him.

REGINA: Miles, he can't come to the phone right now.

MILES: Alright have him call me when he can.

REGINA: I gotta go.

[Miles hangs up the phone and notices Dan and Kate carrying Naomi's body toward the helicopter.]

MILES: Whoa whoa whoa, What are you doing with her?

DANIEL: We're taking her with us.

MILES: What's the point? That's...that's not Naomi! It's just meat!

DANIEL: Miles, we can't just leave her here.

[Frank is sitting a little bit away from the helicopter. He is sitting in the shade under a tree. Juliet is tending to the wound on his forehead. He shouts at Dan.]

FRANK: Miles is right! We burned up most of the damned fuel flying around in that storm. We barely got enough to get back to the freighter. We're not carrying any unnecessary weight. I'll take her on the next run. I promise, Dan.

JACK: (to Kate) There's a blanket over there by my backpack. Would you get it?

KATE: Yeah.

[Juliet is cleaning the wound on Frank’s forehead.]

FRANK: Look as bad as it feels?

JULIET: How bad does it feel?

FRANK: (chuckling) What’s your name again?

JULIET: Juliet.

FRANK: Juliet. Juliet what?

JULIET: Juliet Burke.

FRANK: Juliet Burke. You weren't on that plane, were you?

[Juliet stops tending to the wound and does not respond.]

FRANK: Miles!

MILES: Yeah?

FRANK: This is Juliet...and she was not on the plane.

MILES: What? You sure?

FRANK: (firmly) You know how many times I studied that damn manifest? Believe me there's no Juliet Burke on that plane. She's a native.

[Miles storms toward Juliet. He is yelling at her.]

MILES: Really? Where is he?

[Jack intervenes by blocking Miles’ path. He pushes him back.]

JACK: Back off!

MILES: You want know why we're here? I'll tell you why we're here!

[Miles pulls a folded photograph from his pocket. He unfolds it and holds it up to show Juliet who then shows it to Jack.]

MILES: We're here for Benjamin Linus.

[The photograph shows Ben. He is wearing a white satin vest over a striped shirt with white pants. Behind him is a glass window where the back of a large CRT can be seen.]

MILES: Now where is he?

[Switch back to the jungle where Locke’s group is resting. Sawyer grabs Ben and slams him up against a large tree. He then cock’s the gun at points it at Ben’s head.]

BEN: James, listen to me! Please!

SAWYER: Keep your mouth shut!

LOCKE: (to Charlotte) You okay?

CHARLOTTE: I feel like I've got a cinder block on my chest, but I'll survive.

LOCKE: I'm sorry you got shot, I didn't intend for that to happen.

CHARLOTTE: Really? Because it seemed like you were about to shoot me yourself.

LOCKE: What good would you be to me dead?

CHARLOTTE: (sarcastically) I feel much more comfortable now. Thanks.

SAWYER: I guess this is the part where I'm supposed to say I told you so.

LOCKE: James, I stand corrected.

SAWYER: You want me to do it?

LOCKE: No, it's my mess. I'll clean it up.

[Sawyer gives Locke the gun, which happens to be the same one he took from Karl. He has a look of total disgust on his face.]

ALEX: No, wait!

LOCKE: Danielle, you should escort Alex away from here!

ALEX: No, no!

Danielle: Let's go. Come on, Alex.

KARL: She's right, let's go.

ALEX: Please?

CALIRE: John we should talk about this!

LOCKE: Claire, what if one of those bullets had hit you or the baby?

[Ben starts to show signs of true worry.]

BEN: John, listen. I have information that you need. I have answers.

LOCKE: What is the Monster?

[Ben looks totally confused at the question.]

BEN: What?

LOCKE: The black smoke, the Monster, what is it?

BEN: I don’t know.

[Locke backs away a bit, cocks the gun and points it to Ben’s head.]

LOCKE: Good-bye Benjamin.

[Ben looks at Charlotte and begins to shout.]

BEN: Her name is Charlotte Lewis! Charlotte Staples Lewis. Born July 2nd, 1979, Essex, England. Parents David and Jeanette. Eldest of 3, all girls. She was raised in Bromsgrove. Did her undergraduate studies at Kent. Took her PhD in Cultural Anthropology at Oxford. She's here with 2 other team members and a pilot. Their names Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume, Frank Lapidus.

[Everyone turns and looks at Ben in disbelief. Charlotte is caught off guard.]

BEN: Your instinct was right, John, these people are a threat. And if you shoot me you'll never know how great a threat they were. Because I know what they're doing here. I know what they want.

SAWYER: What do they want?

BEN: Me, James. They want me.

[Charlotte has the look of disgust on her face having been reveald by Ben.]

LOCKE: How do you know all this?

BEN: Because I have a man on their boat.
