When I run Spybot Search and Destroy it runs almost to the half way point and then my computer shuts down. Does this mean I have a virus that my AVG isn't picking up? This never happened before.

Did your HD shut off because of power settings?

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display -> Screen Saver

At bottom of window there is a box for Power. Click it. There is a list of Power Schemes. How long before your Hard Drive shuts down? I have mine set for 1 hour. System standby I have set at never. Monitor is 45 minutes for me because that doesn't affect HD.

I have AVG running and it never bothered Spybot however it could. Disable AVG and try it again first. Still shuts then try power. Make sure you run a AVG scan first to make sure you have no virus problem.

I always run Spybot, Adaware as standalones. I quit other Windows programs. Let me know how it goes :)

:weeping: Dew, I shut off my AVG and it still did it!!! I changed those settings too. It only ran for about 5 minutes before it happened. I hate my computer!
Thanks for trying to help!

Delete all your temporary files in Windows temp folder. This sometimes makes SpyBot burp and stop scanning.

What version of Spybot are you using? Are all the updates current?

You can always go back and restore your PC to a stable time like before you starting having this freeze problem. Create another restore point. After the system restore, check for version and make sure updates are complete.

Are you using an old version of Spybot? I am not an expert on this software. I just follow my instincts before I install anything. Usually I try not to update to a new version. I take updates for existing version. When I upgrade to a new version I uninstall the old version and go to the support site and follow their directions. AVG is an example of new version = get rid of old version first or problems occur.

I am sorry I couldn't be of more help. Maybe TPTP or someone can help you. IIRC you are running Windows. Please provide what operating system/version you have so they can better help you.

btw [bLOST Lunatic[/b] when all else fails, uninstall, reboot, d/l and install latest version. Here is how to [i]completely[/] uninstall Spybot. Print before you do anything! Don't forget to get to a stable state. Restore your PC to a date it was ok.

Do you mean that it shuts down "normally", or does it just kind of shut off all of a sudden? In either case, I'm curious what would happen if you started Windows in safe mode. To get there, just press F8 when booting when Windows first starts to load, right after your computer completes POST. After pressing F8, you should get a text menu which asks you what mode you want to use for Windows.

Dew, I updated tot eh latest version when I pressed the update button.

TPTB, the computer just shuts off all of a sudden right in the middle of scanning. If I started it in safe mode could I then run Spybot while in safe mode?
thanks!

I don't know if it's related, but I had a similar problem with AVG awhile back. The program would run for a certain amount of time, then all of a sudden just exit.

I ended up having to watch it to see where it was, because there was a virus that would crash the program. I narrowed it down to a folder, then sub-folder then finally manually removed the infected file.

Possibly. It's worth a shot. It won't solve the shutdown problem, but it might get you through the scan.
