First there was Locke telling Walt about Backgammon and how it was an ancient game. Then we were shown the black and white "stones" in the cave. And of course the black and white stones in Locke's eyes during Claire's dream.

Now we have seen Walt playing Backgammon, a game he was apparently unfamiliar with until Locke told him about it, soundly defeating Hurley who himself is an accomplished tournament Backgammon player! Not only did Walt beat him but we were shown him rolling the dice and rolling just what he needed at the moment, to which Hurley remarked "No one is that lucky!"

This must be a clue of some sort. I made a post some time ago regarding how I felt games, and Backgammon specifically, possibly had something to do with what is happening. Taking all of the above into consideration it may behoove us to pay more attention to this possibility.

Walt wasn't just lucky with his rolls, it was like he was "willing" the dice to roll a certain way. Fits in nicely with Ethan being a "Lost Boy" in a Peter Pan kind of way. Maybe if they can't get orphans, they are willing to adopt half-orphans (Walt is motherless, and claires baby is basically fatherless).

Perhaps....the writers are combining every classic novel they can into one big adventure (anyone remember The 10th Kingdom?) Watership Down, Ethan Frome, Peter Pan...now we need Lord of the Flies and A Seperate Peace tie ins.

Badger you said this in Hurley meeting thread

Yes, and to which Hurley replied "You'll get it."

As others have said it was most likely simply a ploy to get away from Matt. The thing I found fascinating, and about which I created a new topic, was the fact Backgammon was once again being prominently shown.

The fact Matt defeated Hurley, an accomplished tournament backgammon player, by rolling precisely the dice he needed at the moment as well as Hurley's remark "No one is that lucky!" strongly suggest that games and backgammon specificallyis some kind of clue. Especially when you take into consideration the fact Locke told Matt about Backgammon and how it was an ancient game. I got the impression that until that time Matt was unfamiliar with the game.

Then there were the black and white stones Jack found in the cave and later the black and white stones in Locke's eyes during Claire's dream. And oh yes, the Backgammon blots (pieces) were also black and white during Hurley and Matt's game.

Taking all of this into consideration i'm surprised this doesn't get more scrutiny

So my question is who was playing again? Matt or Walt?????
