Whoops! Thanks, JG. Would you believe I actually DID have a theory that Desmond was trying to give Jack a password? I was so flushed with excitement, I didn't even bother to check if it was a real joke, and a bad one at that. Quite frankly, I prefer most of the answers on this thread.

It was a joke told in Season 1. Anybody remember which episode or by whom? I was told it involved Walt. Perhaps feeding more into Walt being "him."

OK. Enough. I've read in several different threads that this was a joke Hurley told in S1. I've seen every S1 ep at least 3 times, and a board member since the S1 premiere, and I don't ever remember hearing it. So far no one in any of the threads has been able to determine where it was in S1. So unless I completely missed it, I think we can establish that Desmond's asking the question last night was the first time it's been uttered on LOST.

And then we can do away with the Hurley-is-taking-over-for-Desmond theory!

yes artemisia, it was seen in the webmaze months ago on the KCSP site, IIRC you had to answer the question with "freeze" in order to register. Search the thread in Spinoff if you want to refresh your memory.
