Beginning of the End - S4e1:

Flashback: While watching television in Essex, MA in a bathrobe Daniel Faraday watches a news report about the discovery of Oceanic flight 815 in the Sundra Trench. Daniel is weeping, but tells his caretaker that he does not know why.

A frightened Daniel is pushed out of the helicopter by Miles Straume as it struggles to fly.
Miles: Hey genius! Go!
Daniel: No! No! No!

Daniel deploys his parachute, he loses his backpack during the fall he lands hard on the ground and pushes a gun into his waistband at the small of his back as he hears people approaching.

Within moments a man and woman stand in front of him as a heavy rain continues to fall Daniel removes his helmet and asks:
DANIEL: (throwing off helmet) Hey there. Are you Jack?
JACK: Yeah. I’m Jack. Who are you?
DANIEL: I’m Daniel Faraday. I’m here to rescue you.

A while later Daniel, Jack and Kate are seen walking through the jungle searching for the other people from Daniel's team. Daniel explains that he lost his pack while he was falling from the helicopter and that if he had his phone, which was in the pack, he could contact his team. Kate offers Naomi's phone.

Relieved to have a phone, Daniel calls the freighter and speaks to George who inquires about the helicopter’s communications. Daniel mentions that trouble started when the helicopter passed through an electrical storm forcing him to jump out of the helicopter. George notices that he is on speaker phone and asks Daniel to switch it off; Daniel does so and walks away from Jack and Kate.
Daniel returns a few moments later with an update that his ship has not communicated with anyone else he was with and that he doesn't’t know where on the island they are but the SAT phone's GPS will help locate them.
While walking through the jungle the next morning the GPS indicator on the SAT phone begins to beep, displaying Miles’ signal. As they move with determination through the jungle Kate spots a metal box, Daniel tells them that it was most likely pushed out of the helicopter during the previous night's flight troubles. Jack wrestles the box open and finds gas masks and items with bio hazard symbols. Jack presses Daniel for an answer but Daniel nervously claims not to have packed the gear.

Jack delves deeper asking Daniel why he has a gun to which Daniel tells Jack:
DANIEL: Rescuing you and your people. Can't really say it’s our primary objective.

They continue until they see Miles seemingly unconscious on the rocks at the Cove and Jack hurries toward him and removes his helmet to offer medical assistance. But Miles surprises Jack and points a gun at him. Daniel tries to calm an anxious Miles who demands to know where Naomi is.

Kate explains that John Locke killed her and they all hike to her body. When they reach Naomi's body Miles spends time with her while Daniel has finally been able to observe the island comments:
DANIEL The light, is strange out here isn't it? It's kinda like, it doesn't scatter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mie_scattering) quite right.

Kate, who is less concerned about the light and more about the guns Miles and Daniel are holding tries to sweet talk Daniel into put his gun away but Daniel expresses concern that Miles will kill him if he does this.
Miles returns from Naomi's body and says that he is satisfied that Kate has told the truth regarding Naomi's death and attempts to have the foursome hike toward Charlotte’s now visible SAT phone beacon. But Jack refuses and definitely asks Miles to put away his gun telling him that his friends in the jungle pointing their guns at Miles and Daniel. Miles expresses his disbelief and a warning shot is fired in their direction; Juliet and Sayid emerge from the jungle with guns pointed, Miles and Daniel drop their guns.
The group, now numbering six, begin to move toward the beacon which eventually quickly approaches them. Daniel yells out excitedly for Charlotte.

As the interval between beeps decreases Vincent runs out of a dense vegetation with the SAT phone tied to him. Recognizing the deception Jack declares that Locke has Charlotte and Daniel is concerned by this news.

They then see a flare bursting through in the air and move toward it. The group finds Frank Lapidus on the ground and Jack wakes him as Daniel and Miles inquire about the helicopter. Frank confirms that an electrical storm forced him to land the helicopter but it is safe at the bottom of the hill they are on.

Once the group arrives at the helicopter and Sayid performs a visual assessment of the helicopter's ability to fly Daniel and Kate retrieve Naomi’s body and return it to the helicopter.

Miles questions why Daniel and Kate have retrieved Naomi's body saying:
MILES: Wo wo wo what are you doing with her?
DAN: We're taking her with us.
MILES: What's the point, that's not Naomi, it's just meat.
DAN: Miles, we can't just leave her here.
FRANK: [Shouting from a distance] Miles is right. We burned up most of the damned fuel flying around that storm. We barely got enough to get back to the freighter, we're not carrying any unnecessary weight. I'll take her on the next run. I promise, Dan.
Daniel and Jack carry Naomi's body into a shady area. Meanwhile Juliet tends to Frank's wounds. Frank determines that she was not on the plane and notifies Miles immediately. Miles walks toward them shouting: "where is he" at Juliet. When Jack tries to intervene, Miles reveals:
MILES: You wanna know why we're here, I'll tell you why we're here!
[Miles reveals a photo showing Ben sitting beside a computer presumably off-island.]
MILES: We're here for Benjamin Linus.
[The photo shows Ben]
MILES: Now where is he?
The Economist - S4e3:
While Sayid and Miles hike toward Locke’s group, Daniel sets up an experiment near the helicopter including a tripod, a timer and a beacon.

Daniel asks to borrow Frank's SAT phone but Frank instructs Daniel to hang up if Mikowski picks up, Daniel agrees. Jack looks concerned and inquires about Daniel to Frank who explains that “Half the stuff he says goes way over my head, the other half goes way, way over.”

Daniel speaks with Regina on Frank’s SAT phone and asks her to launch the payload. As the tripod timer begins Regina provides distance to impact at regular intervals. However, upon reaching zero kilometers the rocket fails to appear and Daniel is visibly concerned, but not surprised.
REGINA: Five kilometers to beacon.
DANIEL: Huh.
REGINA: Zero.
DANIEL: I don’t have it.
REGINA: That’s weird.
DANIEL: That is far more than weird
A short time later, the rocket is heard approaching and lands near the beacon (commentary: next to the helicopter that they need to leave the island – Oh, Daniel!).

Daniel quickly retrieves the timer from the rocket comparing the times of the on the tripod which reads 02:45:03 to the payload clock reads 03:16:22, (ticks to 03:16:23); a 31 minute and 18 second difference. Daniel responds:
DANIEL: Thirty-one minutes.
[Jack and Frank walk up behind him.]
DANIEL: Oh, no. This is not good.

Later, Sayid returns to the helicopter with Charlotte, indicating that he traded Miles for her. Daniel greets Charlotte, putting his arm around her.

Frank prepares to fly Sayid and Desmond to the freighter Daniel requests that they return Naomi to the freighter and cautions Frank:
DANIEL: Frank. Frank? Just, just, just, just, just one thing. Just be sure that you follow the same exact bearing that we came in on, okay. No matter what. By that, I mean no matter what. Just, just stay on it.

Eggtown - S4e4:
Daniel and Charlotte are introduced to the losties by Jack when they and Juliet return to the beach.
JACK: (to crowd) This is, uh, Charlotte, and Dan. Their helicopter already took Sayid and Desmond back to their freighter. They can make arrangements to get all of us off this island.
[Daniel looks at his feet]
Later, while the losties prepare for a possible rescue, Daniel is in the pantry examining the DHARMA labels on the food boxes.

That night Charlotte tests Daniel’s memory with a simple card matching game. Charlotte seems encouraged although Daniel is not as enthusiastic about remembering only two of three cards.

Jack approaches the two concerned that he has not been able to call the freighter. Charlotte offers an emergency number that they call to inquire about Desmond and Sayid’s arrival which should have been hours earlier; Regina tells them that they haven’t arrived and didn’t know that the helicopter left the island.

The Constant - S4e5:
Commentary: Due to the dramatic interaction between Daniel and Desmond I have chosen to include their dialog from transcripts w/ limited narrative following this walkthough.
Daniel overhears a conversation Jack is having and recognizes that Desmond is experiencing the effects of crossing the mysterious barrier that had prevented the freighter from approaching the island for several weeks. With an eagerness to help and new found confidence Daniel guides Desmond through what Daniel understands to be consciousness time shifting by the SAT phone from his location on the beach.
After determining that Desmond believes it is 1996, 8 years earlier, Daniel suggests that when Desmond's consciousness returns to 1996 that he should visit him at Oxford University's Queens College Physics Department. Daniel frantically searches for information that Desmond can tell Daniel in 1996 because he is concerned that 1996 Daniel will not believe Desmond's consciousness is truly experiencing time shifts. Daniel provides Desmond specific frequency settings written in his journal and the name "Eloise" as proof that 2004 Daniel sent Desmond to him in 1996.
In 1996, at Oxford University Desmond approaches a frustrated Daniel and explains that he has come to see him from the future and provides the frequency settings. Daniel is skeptical and suspects that Desmond is a participant in a faculty joke aimed at him and walks away. Desperate for help, he reveals that he knows about Eloise stopping Daniel in stride.
Daniel hurries Desmond into his office, explaining that it is where he performs experiments the university doesn't support. He introduces Desmond to Eloise, a lab rat, and places her in a wooden maze. Daniel sets the machine to the numbers Desmond provided him and zaps with a pinkish beam of light. Daniel has put on a lead lined vest but eased Desmond's concern to also wear one because he needs to wear it due to repeated daily exposure to the beam's radiation. Desmond inquires about protecting his head and Daniel considers the question with the look of an absent minded professor.
A few seconds later the still Eloise stirs and begins to move through the maze reaching the end quickly without error. Daniel is excited, explaining to to a confused Desmond that with the frequency settings Desmond provided he has moved Eloise's consciousness into the near future where he will teach Eloise the maze solution and she returned to the present demonstrating her knowledge of information learned in the future. Desmond presses Daniel on how that helps him and Daniel admits he believes that Desmond was sent to help Daniel solve his time travel experiment.
Next we see Daniel writing equations on his office chalkboard when Desmond wakens in a chair. Daniel explains to Desmond that he had collapsed mid-sentence and he placed him in the chair where he has been for 75 minutes. Desmond tells Daniel that he was only was in 2006 for 5 minutes and notices that Eloise is dead. Daniel explains that he will have to perform an autopsy but that she most likely died of an aneurysm as an effect of her consciousness' time shifting. Desmond demands to know how he can prevent this from happening to him. Daniel recommends that he try to secure his thoughts to a single meaningful anchor in both 1996 and 2004 in order to restore the reason and order that is being eroded by the chaotic bombardment of variables in his mind. He needs a constant.
Desmond moves to the phone in Daniel's office announcing that he is going to call his constant. Desmond dials the number but hangs up the phone and hurries out of Daniel's office.
Transcript information:
At the island beach Daniel gets Charlotte a drink of water. Jack holds the satellite phone and looks concerned. He is sitting with his hands to the sides of his forehead. Juliet is leaning against a pole pulling her hair back off her face and neck.
JACK: Alright. They took off a day ago. Why haven't we heard from them?
CHARLOTTE: I'm going to tell you again, as I've been telling you all night, doctor. I don't know! You heard the same thing as I did when we called the boat. What makes you think I know anything?
JULIET: Because you're not worried.
CHARLOTTE: Excuse me?
JULIET: Your boat's 40 miles off the coast, it should have taken them what, 20 minutes to get there? So why aren't you worried?
CHARLOTTE: (sarcastically) Should I wring me hands together and whisper a prayer on their behalf?
DANIEL: (to Charlotte) Hey, hey, hey, c'mon. Maybe we should just, just tell them.
JACK: Tell us what?
CHARLOTTE: Dan, let's not confuse anyone.
JULIET: (sarcastically) Well, Daniel, maybe if you talk real slow, we'll be able to follow.
DANIEL: Your perception of how long your friends have been gone? It's not necessarily how long they've actually been gone.
JACK: (concerned) What does that mean?
CHARLOTTE: This is a mistake.
DANIEL: It'll be fine. It'll be fine. As long as Frank flew on the bearings I gave him. If he stayed on it, it, it'll be fine.
JACK: And what if he didn’t?
DANIEL: Then there might be side effects.
Jack is now looking toward Juliet. He switches to speaker phone. Juliet, Dan and Charlotte walk closer to Jack.

JACK: Alright, you're on speaker.
SAYID: On the helicopter, something happened to Desmond. He doesn't appear to recognize me or know where he is.
JACK: (to Daniel) Side effects?
DANIEL: Well, your friend...uh, Desmond. Has he...has he recently been exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism? Okay, look. Uh, we don't know why, but going to and coming from the island, some people can get a little...confused.

Juliet, Charlotte and Jack all look at Dan baffled by what he is saying.
JULIET: So, what? Is this amnesia?
DANIEL: No, this is not amnesia.
DESMOND: Hello?
DANIEL: (on speaker) Desmond! Desmond, my name is Daniel Faraday. We met yesterday before you took off? But I'm guessing you don't remember that. Am I right?
DESMOND: Took off? What?
DANIEL: Desmond, we don't have long to talk so I need you to tell me what year you think it is.
DESMOND: What do you mean, what year do I think it, it's 1996!
Daniel drops his head down and sighs. Jack, Juliet and Charlotte look at each other then at Dan. They are very confused.
DANIEL: Alright, Desmond. Desmond look, you, you gotta tell me.Where are you?

DESMOND: Um, I’m, I'm in some kind of sickbay.
DANIEL: No, no, no. Not right now, Desmond. Where are you supposed to be? Where are you in 1996?
DESMOND: Uh, eh, uh, Camp Miller. It's a, Royal Scots Regiment. It's, uh, just north of Glasgow.
Jack goes to Dan trying to offer advice which Dan tries to ignore.
JACK: Dan. You might wanna...
DANIEL: (continues talking to Desmond) No, no, no. I'm thinking, I'm thinking. Desmond, listen. When it happens again, Desmond, I need you to get on a train. Get on a train and go to Oxford. Oxford University. Queens College Physics Department. Alright?
DESMOND: What, why?
DANIEL: Because I need you to find me!

Dan is kneeling on the ground looking through his backpack. He is trying to locate his journal. He is talking to himself.
DANIEL: Where is it? Where is it?
CHARLOTTE: What?
DANIEL: My journal. My journal. I need my journal or I won't believe him.

JACK: Why does he think he's in 1996?
DANIEL: I don't know, I don't know. It's unpredictable. It's a random effect. Sometimes the split takes only a couple of hours, sometimes it's years.
JACK: Wa, wait. This has happened before?
Dan locates his journal, gets up and reaches for the phone that Jack is now holding. He addresses Jack.
DANIEL: The phone now, please. Thank you. (to Desmond) Desmond, are you still there?
DESMOND: (to Daniel) Yes! Yes, I'm here!
DANIEL: Okay, Desmond, listen. When you find me at Queens College, I need you to tell me to set the device to 2.342.
DESMOND: What?
DANIEL: Alright, you got it? 2.342! And it must be oscillating at 11 hertz. You got it Desmond?

DESMOND: 2.342 and oscillating at 11...
DANIEL: Just remember that. 2.342 and 11 hertz, alright? And one more thing, Desmond. If the numbers don't convince me, I need you to tell me that you know about Eloise.
The scene quickly changes to Desmond walking up a path on a college campus. He is in civilian clothes and wearing a leather jacket. It is the campus of Queens College. At the end of a walkway near a door, Dan is talking to a student. His hair is below his shoulders with the sides pulled back in a ponytail. As Desmond approaches him, Dan’s voice becomes clearer.
DANIEL: …of original thinking...the opposite of, I am the one that you need to impress. I'm not impressed. So go, go try again.

Dan hands the student a paper. The student and Dan walk in different directions. Desmond speaks to Dan.
DESMOND: Um, sorry. Are, are you Daniel Faraday?
DANIEL: You are?
DESMOND: Uh, sorry, I'm, I'm, I'm Desmond Hume, and um, I was told I could find you here. I, I think I've...just been to the future.
DANIEL: (doubtingly) The future?
DESMOND: Yes. Uh, I ss, spoke to you there. You, uh, you told me to come here, t, t, to Oxford. To find you. You, you said you'd help me.
DANIEL: Why didn't I just help you there, in the future?
DESMOND: Sorry?
DANIEL: Why would I put you through the headache of time travel, you know? You know what I mean? It just seems a little, unnecessary. And don't you think that my esteemed colleagues could have come up with something just a little more believable, huh? Wha, what kind of a prank is that? Huh, a paradox. So uninspired.
Dan begins to walk away from Desmond who turns around and yells to him.
DESMOND: Set your device to um, 2.342 and, and make sure it oscillates at 11.
Dan stops and turns to Desmond in disbelief.

DANIEL: Okay, now, now you, you're going to tell me who told you those numbers.
DESMOND: You did.
DANIEL: No, this, this is ridiculous. If you think you...
DESMOND: (interrupting) I know about Eloise!
Dan becomes silent. Switch to Dan and Desmond entering Dan’s college office.

DESMOND: What, what is all this?
DANIEL: This is where I do the things Oxford frowns upon. Alright, this, this future version of me? Uh, he referenced this meeting, right? Obviously so, so I would remember you coming to Oxford, right? I would remember this, here, right now.
DESMOND: Actually, um, no.
DANIEL: No?
DESMOND: Maybe you just forgot.
DANIEL: Yeah, right. How would that happen?
DESMOND: So this, this is changing the future?
DANIEL: You can't change the future.
Dan puts on what appears to be a lead, lined apron.

DESMOND: What's that for?
DANIEL: Radiation.
DESMOND: Do I get one?
DANIEL: You don't need one. For prolonged exposure. I do this 20 times a day.
DESMOND: So what do you put on your head?
[Dan looks at Desmond playfully while deep in thought.]
DANIEL: Huh. Yeah.

There are various pieces of equipment about the room. Daniel begins to turn dials and flip switches. Sounds of beeps and hums are now heard. Dan walks over to a cage and carefully takes out a white lab rat.
DANIEL: This, this is Eloise.

Dan places Eloise in a large, transparent bottomed, wooden maze sitting on a table. He adjusts a hair dryer shaped dome, with pale pink light in the top half, over the spot where Eloise is standing.
DESMOND: What does this do?
DANIEL: This, if the numbers you gave me are correct, what this will do is unstick Eloise in time. Just like you.
Dan presses a button and a pinkish light shines on Eloise. Desmond watches. After the l light stops shining on Eloise, Dan quickly removes his apron and goes to check her.

Desmond asks what happened as Eloise is motionless. She is in a cell at the beginning of the maze. A wooden divider keeps her from the rest of the maze.
DANIEL: Wait, sh shh! She's not back yet.
[Eloise starts to fidget. She becomes aware again.]
DANIEL: There she is. Okay, here goes everything.
Dan raises the wooden divider, which let Eloise have access to the entire maze. She slowly walks into the maze then speeds up. She runs through the entire maze flawlessly. It is obvious that she is not addled.
DANIEL: (excited) Come on. That's it, that's it, yes, yes, yes! Hah, hah, hah! Yes! Oh, it worked! This is incredible.
DESMOND: (irked) I'm sorry, how is a rat running through a bloody maze so incredible?
DANIEL: What is incredible is, I just finished the maze this morning. I'm not going to teach her to run it until an hour from now.
DESMOND: Sss, so you, you sent her to the future?!
DANIEL: No, no, no. Her consciousness. Her mind.
Dan quickly walks to a chalkboard and begins erasing, with both hands, existing formula and writing new ones.
DESMOND: So, so how does that help me?

DANIEL: Whoa! Ah, you're back. And you were out almost 75 minutes.
DESMOND: Out?
DANIEL: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. You just woof, went catatonic right in the middle of a sentence. I had to carry you to the chair. So I take it you were, you were in the future again?
DESMOND: Aye.
DANIEL: For how long?
DESMOND: I don't know, 5 minutes? Why does this keep happening?
DANIEL: Well, in your case, I'm guessing that progression is exponential. Each time your consciousness jumps, it gets harder and harder to jump back. I, would be careful crossing the street if I were you.
Desmond now notices Eloise who is now dead in her cage.
DESMOND: What happened to her?
DANIEL: She died.
DESMOND: Yeah, I can see that. How?
DANIEL: Brain aneurysm, probably. I dunno. I'll need to do an autopsy later.
DESMOND: Is that going to happen to me?
DANIEL: The effects seem to vary from case to case, but uh...
Desmond grabs and pushes Dan into the chalkboard which slides back to the wall.

DESMOND: If this keeps happening, am I going to die?
DANIEL: I don’t know.
[Desmond releases Dan.]
DANIEL: I think Eloise's brain short-circuited. The jumps between the present and the future. She eventually, she couldn't tell which was which. She had no anchor.
DESMOND: Wha, wha, wha, what do you mean, anchor?
DANIEL: Something familiar in both times. All this, see this, is all variables. It's random. It's chaotic. Every equation needs stability, something known. It's called a constant. Desmond, you have no constant. When you go to the future, nothing there is familiar. If you want to stop this, th, then you need to find something there. Something that you really, really care about, that also exists back here, in 1996.

Desmond picks up Dan’s office phone and quickly begins dialing a phone number.
DANIEL: Uh, who are you calling?
DESMOND: I'm calling my bloody constant.
Desmond slams the receiver on the phone base then storms out of Dan's office.
Switch to Daniel kneeling under a tree on the beach. The sun is starting to set. He is calm as he thumbs through his journal, back to front. On the last page is written in large, upper case, red print: "IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG, DESMOND HUME WILL BE MY CONSTANT". The word 'MY' is underlined. Daniel looks to the sky and sighs in relief. He then looks back at the page again.

Daniel and Charlotte rest near a stream reading a map and Daniel expresses concerns that he can achieve their goal but Charlotte expresses confidence that he can.

DANIEL: Yeah.
As they begin to resume their journey Kate appears from the jungle and Charlotte aims her gun at her until Daniel assures her that Kate is “ok”. While filling her canteen from the stream Kate informs the two that Miles is being held by John Locke and inquires why they are in the jungle. Charlotte is caught in a lie involving retrieving replacement for their dead SAT phone batteries when Daniel’s phone displays a green light. Kate asks and is allowed to look inside the bag Daniel is carrying to reveal a gas mask, Charlotte knocks Kate unconscious.

Later, Daniel is wearing a hazmat suit typing frantically at a keyboard while an automated voice warns of “switching to an unauthorized manual operation” and “repeated attempts to access storage tanks will result in contamination.” Daniel notices Juliet, now standing behind him and expresses concern. As Juliet points a gun at Daniel and instructs him to move away from the computer, acting on Ben’s orders delivered by Harper Stanhope, the automated voice states “final warning; manual override failed. Countermeasures will begin” Daniel tells Juliet that he cannot stop and he is in fact trying to disable the gas, not release it.

AUTOMATED VOICE: “Warning. Manual override failed. Counter measures will begin.”
[Daniel turns to computer and begins typing]
JULIET: Hey.
AUTOMATED VOICE: “One minute to contamination”
JULIET: (grabs and removes Daniel’s gas mask) You want to release the gas? You’ll die like the rest of us.
DANIEL: No, no. I’m not trying to release it. I’m trying to render it inert, Juliet. I just want to make it safe.
[Charlotte approaches Juliet from behind and strikes Juliet with a pipe. Juliet falls to the ground and her gun slides across the floor away from her. Daniel returns to typing. Juliet dodges Charlotte’s attempts to hit her with the pipe.]
As Juliet considers this information Charlotte approaches from behind striking her and Daniel continues to type frantically on the keyboard as the automated voice begins a countdown to contamination. The two women struggle distracting Daniel despite his pleas for them to stop.

As warning sirens blare and the countdown approaches zero Charlotte urges on Daniel as he continues to type frantically, blurting “I’m trying!” Finally, a desperate Daniel pleads “Come on” at which point the sirens stop and the automated voice indicates that the systems are returning to normal. Daniel is relieved.

Daniel and others rush toward Bernard who is frantically calling for help in the shallow breakers. They find that the dead body of a man with slit throat has washed ashore, Daniel tells the group that the dead man was the ship’s doctor.

[Jack gives a disbelieving look and stands.]
Jack inquires about the SAT phone and Daniel tells him that the phone was smashed and is only capable of transmitting beeps if they had some ferrous metal, a nine volt battery and wiring. Kate offers the salvaged parts from the plane and the two depart to work on the SAT phone repairs.
Later that night Daniel is with Jack, Kate, and Bernard as he transmits Morse coded signals on the repaired SAT phone relieved his repairs were successful. Daniel tells the group that he has asked about the doctor and was told that they didn’t answer the question but indicated that Sayid and Desmond are ok and that the helicopter will return in the morning.

Bernard, who understands Morse code reveals that the reply from the freighter indicated that they didn’t understand the question because the doctor is fine. Daniel is disappointed that the he has not earned their trust and that he has been caught in a lie.
BERNARD: He's lying. What the message said was, "What are you talking about? The doctor is fine."
[Uncomfortably, Dan looks about.]
DANIEL: (to Bernard) You know Morse code.
JACK: What does that mean, "The doctor is fine?"
DANIEL: I don't know.

[Jack grabs Dan by his collar and pulls him close.]
KATE: Jack!
JACK: Were you ever... gonna take us off this island?

At the beach there is a ruckus involving Bernard and Daniel. Daniel claims not to know why the SAT phone’s signal has stopped working. Daniel appears to be troubled by the situation that exists between him and the losties.

Tensions flare again when the losties object to accepting help from Daniel but he convinces Juliet to accept his offer of help.
CHARLOTTE: (scoffs) See, Dan? I told you. They're convinced we're trying to kill 'em. Might as well keep playing the part.
DANIEL: Damn it, Charlotte. That right there, that right there. (confronts her) Your... your attitude... your... very bad attitude... it's exactly why they don't trust us. (whispers) Come on.
[Dan moves back to wards Juliet.]
DANIEL: Juliet, please. Don't blame us for... for this. For whatever is happening. We're scientists. We don't want anyone to get hurt. We just wanna help. Please let us help.
[Juliet rips the list from the notebook and hands it to Dan, then takes her pistol and offers it to Jin.].

The group at the beach hears a noise approaching. As a low flying helicopter passes overhead a bag is seen falling onto the beach. The group retrieves the bag and Jack hands the SAT phone he finds inside to Daniel with the caveat to not to “try anything stupid”; Daniel agrees. They all listen as Keamy’s voice indicates that they will make their way to the Orchid. Away from the group Daniel reviews a page from his notebook with a pencil sketch of the Orchid logo and expresses an immediate need to leave the island because Daniel believes that the mercenaries are using the secondary protocol.

The next morning Sayid arrives in the Kahana's zodiac and Daniel offers to shuttle people off he island with the Zodiac while Sayid pursues the helicopter and Jack in the jungle. Sayid agrees and hands Daniel his compass so that Daniel can follow a safe path to the freighter. Daniel asks for six people to climb into the zodiac and Juliet insists that Sun be included because she is pregnant. Jin, Sun who is carrying Aaron and three other losties climb into the zodiac before it pushes off into the surf. Daniel waves to a concerned Charlotte on the beach and begins its trip to the Kahana.

As the zodiac approaches the Kahana and Daniel calls to Desmond for help and informs him that Sayid has gone after the helicopter while he ferries survivors off the island. The passengers disembark and Daniel returns to the island.

MILES: Well, don't worry about me, 'cause I'm gonna stay.
FARADAY: Miles, no, uh, uh, I don't think I'm getting across the... direness of the circumstance.
MILES: Oh, no, you're very dire, but I'm still gonna stay.
(Faraday sees Charlotte come near.)
FARADAY: Hey, ten minutes.
CHARLOTTE: Yep.
Later Daniel begins to tell Charlotte something important when she interrupts to tell him that she has reconsidered and will stay on the island “for now” because she is looking for where she was born. Daniel is confused and tells her that there is no “now” but Charlotte is determined to stay and they embrace and say goodbye.

CHARLOTTE: Would it make any sense if I told you I was still looking for where I was born?
FARADAY: N--no.
(They laugh as they embrace and Charlotte kisses Faraday on the cheek.)
CHARLOTTE: Good-bye, Daniel.
Daniel returns to the Zodiac and offers Juliet a ride but she tells him that she’s not leaving until everyone else is safely off the island. He departs with a boat load of red shirts in the Zodiac.

Despite Sawyer's concerned confusion that the Losties had blown it up Daniel is satisfied and encourages the group to move quickly towards it before another event occurs. Sawyer, overcome with concern, demands to know Daniel's meaning.

As the group hikes towards the Dharma station Daniel hurries past Sawyer and Juliet encouraging them to pick up their pace. Frustrated, shirtless Sawyer demands Daniel's shirt but Daniel reminds him that the group has greater concerns and asks to keep the group moving.

Sawyer and Daniel continue to argue as Sawyer refuses Daniel's request that he simply trust him ending when they exchange blows; Daniel with this wit and Sawyer with his hand.

SAWYER: How 'bout we call a time out so you can tell us what the hell is goin' on..
DANIEL: How about you trust me?
SAWYER: Trust you? I don't know you.
DANIEL: We really do not have time for me to try to explain. You have no idea how difficult that would be for me to try and explain this, this phenomena to a quantum physicist. That would be difficult so for me to try and explain whatever is happening…
[As Daniel continues to talk, Sawyer forcefully slaps him across the face.]
As Charlotte attempts to intervene, Sawyer threatens her and demands that Daniel explain the situation. Daniel explains that Ben Linus' action in the Orchid station have caused the either the Island or the people on it are moving trough time, just like a needle skipping on a record.

Daniel expresses concern that the whereabouts of all of the Losties on the Island are known. Seemingly aware of the situation Sawyer tells him "no".
DANIEL: The island… [pauses] think of the island like a record spinning on a turntable, only now, that record is skipping. Whatever Ben Linus did down at the Orchid Station…. [pauses] I think it may have, dislodged us.
MILES: Dislodged us from what?
DANIEL: Time.
[Miles, Daniel, Sawyer and Juliet look at each other.]
JULIET: So that's why our camp is gone. Because the island is moving through time?
DANIEL: Either the island is or we are.
SAWYER: What?!
DANIEL: It's just as likely we are moving, your people and us. Everyone in your group, you're all accounted for, right?
[Juliet looks at Sawyer and he takes another deep breath.]
SAWYER: Not everyone. [to Juliet] Locke.
JUMP 2
Next time we Daniel he and the group are in the jungle emerging from another time jump and are now in darkness. Saywer asks where they are but Daniel admits that he doesn't know.

As the group continues walking through the jungle Daniel's team members discuss if Widmore will search for them but Miles doesn't believe Widmore will be able to find them quickly considering it took him 20 years to find the Island this time.

Meanwhile Juliet discovers the hole in the ground where the Dharma station was and Daniel explains that this indicates that they are now after Oceanic 815 crashed on the island.
Sensing an urgency Sawyer indicates that he will to rush back to the beach camp but Daniel douses his excitement explaining that it might be pointless considering the possibility that another time jump may occur before he arrives there. Sawyer again expresses concern, stating that he should try to get to the helicopter and Juliet suggest they can warn Jack &co. not to get on the helicopter.

Daniel solemnly explains that this cannot happen due to the rules of time travel being that events of the past cannot and will not change
DANIEL: That's not the way it works.
SAWYER: Who says?
DANIEL: You cannot change anything. You can't. Even if you try to, it wouldn't work.
SAWYER: Why not?
DANIEL: Time, it is like a stream. Alright, we can move forward on that stream, we can move in reverse, but we cannot ever create a new stream. If we try to do anything different, we will fail every time. Whatever happened, happened.
Once again, Sawyer presses Daniel for an explanation. Daniel explains that his life has been dedicated to studying the Dharma Initiative.

SAWYER: How do you know so much about this Danny boy?
[Daniel takes off his backpack and opens it. He takes out his leather bound journal.]
DANIEL: I know about this because I spent my entire adult life studying space time. I know all this because [patting journal] this journal contains everything I've ever learned about the Dharma Initiative. This, is why I'm here. I know what's happening.
Concerned and discouraged, Sawyer asks how to stop the skipping but Daniel doesn't answer.

DANIEL: You can't stop it.
SAWYER: Then who can?
Next Daniel and the Losites are still standing peering into the crater while Juliet explains to Miles that Desmond lived in the hatch pressing a button every 108 minutes to save the world the third time jump occurs.

When the jump concludes it is daylight and the hole is now replaced with leafy plants growing in the jungle floor. Juliet searches and finds the hatch where the hole in the ground had been only moments earlier.

Sawyer immediately moves away from the group explaining that he is going to attempt to gain access through the jungle door to gather supplies rather than resort to eating boar and other survival necessities. Daniel pursues attempting to dissuade Sawyer insisting that he cannot meet Desmond in a new past.

Sawyer reaches the door and proceeds to bang on the station door for several minutes while Daniel continues to tell Sawyer that Desmond will not and cannot open the door. Eventually, Sawyer tires and stops. Daniel calmly explains his other rule of time travel.
SAWYER: Open up! Open the damn door! Open the door!
DANIEL: Please? You're wasting your time.
SAWYER: Open up I know you can hear me!
DANIEL: If it didn't happen, it can't happen.
[Sawyer continues to struggle to open the door.]
SAWYER: Open the door!
DANIEL: It can't happen! You can’t change the past, James!

Dejected, the group decides to return to the beach to seek food and shelter as night is approaching. Daniel tells Charlotte she should go with the group because he has retrieve his pack left at the Dharma hatch and will meet her back at the beach. Daniel notices Charlotte's nose is bleeding and wipes it as she tells him she has not had a nose bleed since she was a little girl. The two part ways but Daniel seems concerned.

Daniel hurries back to the hatch door and removes a notebook from his backpack. He begins to flip through the pages eventually stopping to read a page. Daniel returns to the station door and expresses hope that his plan works. He looks at the door, steps forward and begins knocks twice on the door, waits several seconds and knocks again. A man wearing a yellow Haz-mat suit opens it, pointing a rifle at him; relieved Daniels softly says "Desmond".

Desmond anxiously inquires if Daniel is his replacement and demands to know who he is and why he has been banging on his door for 20 minutes. Daniel tells Desmond that he not his replacement and calls him "Desmond". Confused, Desmond asks Daniel if he knows Daniel. Not wasting any time as the sky begins to change colors, Daniel introduces himself as "Daniel Faraday" and informs Desmond that he is special and that a group of people need his help. Daniel pleads with Desmond to travel to Oxford and find his mother just before the next jump.

DANIEL: Yeah, in a way. Listen, that is not important. What is important Desmond is what I'm about to say to you. I need you to listen. You are the only person who can help us because Desmond, the rules, the rules don't apply to you. You're special.
[Desmond lowers his rifle and listens to Daniel.]
DANIEL: You're uniquely and miraculously special.
DESMOND: [raises rifle] What are you talking about?
[The noise is starting again. Desmond looks up.
DANIEL: OK listen to me. Listen! If the helicopter somehow made it off the island, if you got home…
DESMOND: What helicopter? What are you talking about?
DANIEL: Listen, I need to you listen or people are gonna die. My name is Daniel Faraday and right now me, and everyone else you left behind, we're in serious danger. You're the only person who can help us. I need you to go back to Oxford University.
[The sky starts turning white.]
DANIEL: Go back to where we met. I need you to go there and find my mother. Her name is….

The Lie - S5e2

Daniel walks out of the jungle onto the beach and is confronted by Sawyer, Juliet, Charlotte and Miles. Sawyer demands to know what took him so long to return to the beach and Daniel tells Sawyer he had to pick up his back pack.

Juliet suggests that they use the Zodiac to a shipping channel but Daniel explains the in order to leave the Island he will have to recalculate the proper bearing based on when they are.

Later that night Daniel is sitting by himself on the beach when Charlotte brings him a mango and inquires if Daniel may know why she still has a headache from earlier and cannot remember her mother's maiden name but Daniel does not offer an answer.

Jughead - S5e3
Daniel, Miles, Charlotte and two red shirts are walking trough the jungle discussing why the other Losties have not yet rendezvoused at the stream after the flaming arrow attack. Daniel walks with Charlotte and asks how her headache is; Charlotte replies that it is still hurting but isn't complaining. Daniel then asks if she is experiencing dizziness or double vision; Charlotte confirms both and presses Daniel for information he may have regarding her health: Daniel stops, Charlotte turns to him and approaches.

CHARLOTTE: Both, actually. Why do you look so worried? Is it because you know what's happening to me?
FARADAY: Listen to me. Nothing is gonna happen to you. Nothing. I won't let it.
As Daniel and Charlotte discussing this Mies indicates that they have arrived at the creek as planned but nobody else is there. Two red shirts walk along the riverbed while Daniel tries to encourage Miles to have a less gloomy outlook for the situation when Miles and shouts to warn them not to move but he is too late. The red shirts are killed when they detonate land mines and Miles, Charlotte and Daniel are thrown to the ground.

As they recover five men emerge from the jungle wearing camaflouge and pointing crossbows at them. A woman with short blond hair then approaches them holding a rifle asking who is in charge of their group, Miles indicates that Daniel is. The woman turns to Daniel as the camera angle reveals her perspective, she stares, turns her head and says:

WOMAN: You just couldn't stay away, could you?
As the two redshirts' bodies are retrieved from the creek, Daniel, Charlotte and Miles are interrogated by the blond woman; she asks where the remaining 20 people from the beach are; Daniel tells her that he doesn't know. She suggests that he cooperate now because once they leave the jungle she will no longer be in control of what happens.

As Daniel, Charlotte and Miles are escorted through the jungle by their captors Daniel notices one of their captors hand is bandaged. Miles walks aside Daniel and tells him that they recently walked over a grave containing 4 US soldiers, 3 of whom died from bullet wounds and the fourth from radiation poisoning less than a month ago. Daniel asks if any of them mentioned the year but before Miles can respond the blond woman announces that they have arrived.

The group has arrived at a tent camp site and she calls to Richard. A man emerges from a tent and she informs him of the capture and identifies Daniel as their leader. The man asks Daniel his name, Daniel asks his name.

He replies, "My name is Richard Alpert. I assume you've come back for your bomb".
As Daniel, Charlotte and Miles are brought into a tent, still handcuffed he expresses concern for Charlotte's treatment but she tells him it's ok. Daniel attempts to calm their fears by reminding them that once the next time jump occurs they will leave the situation but admits that could be in either 5 minutes or 5000 years. Daniel also surmises that the reason they are being treated as prisoners is because they are presumed to be part of the US military and he suggests that their best chance for survival is to play the role.

Richard enters the tent and apologizes for interrupting their conversation and informs them that the blond woman, Ellie indicated that Daniel is unwilling to reveal information. Richard presses Daniel for information concerning the rest of Daniel's team and explains that he and his team are protecting themselves from Daniel and his group of unwelcomed visitors.

Daniel responds in kind:
RICHARD: We didn't start this, friend. Your people attacked us. You come to our island to run your tests, you fire on us, and what, you expect us not to defend ourselves?
FARADAY: I don't know anything about that. We are scientists.
ALPERT: So what? So they sent you here to recover it?
FARADAY: If you mean our hydrogen bomb, then yes. And I'm guessing from this man's radiation burns that the housing has been compromised. Is that right?
(Richard looks down at the hands of the male Hostile, which are covered in bandages.)
FARADAY: You need to listen to me. You have an unstable device that's capable of destroying this entire island, and it's broken. If you don't allow me to render it inert, all of us are gonna die. All of us.
RICHARD: How do I know you weren't sent here on some suicide mission? That I'll take you out to the bomb, and you'll just detonate it?
Daniel pauses and reveals that he can be trusted not to detonate the bomb to protect the women he loves. Richard accepts his help.

FARADAY: Because... I'm in love with the woman sitting next to me. And I would never... I would never do anything to hurt her.
RICHARD: All right. Take care of your bomb. But you try anything else, and you will hurt her.
After Richard and his team leave Miles presses Daniel for information about the circumstances; Daniel explains that the US Army had experimented with hydrogen bombs in the South Pacific during the 1950's.
Charlotte looks at Daniel and through an uneasy smile tells Daniel that he could have used another reason for Richard to trust him not blow up the island rather than to say that he loved her. Daniel slowly, tells Charlotte he does love her.

FARADAY: I said what I said because I meant it, Charlotte.
Charlotte smiles at him as Ellie enters the tent and instructs Daniel to come with her. Daniel promises to return quickly; Charlotte smiles nervously.
Outside the tent Richard removes Daniel's handcuffs and instructs him not to try anything clever. He also tells Daniel that he offered 18 soldiers the chance to leave the Island and the bomb they were guarding but when they refused he was forced to kill them by his superiors.

RICHARD: Y--you answer to someone, don't you? You follow a chain of command, right?
FARADAY: Yeah.
RICHARDY: Yeah, well, so do I.
Just then a man runs into the camp frantically calling for Richard. He explains that he and his team were overtaken by a group of people during the raid but he managed to escape. Ellie and he exchange vocal jabs and he demands to know who Daniel is. Richard informs him that he is going to help them with their problem and orders Ellie to take him away but the man protests that they shouldn't accept help from the enemy. Daniel and Ellie leave the group.

While walking Ellie aims her gun towards Daniel and asks why he keeps looking at her. Daniel initially denies this claim but quickly admits that he is struck by how similar she looks to someone he used to know. Ellie isn't amused by his comment and sarcastically calls him a Romeo, Daniel snickers. Ellie presses Daniel for more information and tells him that she isn't fooled by his claim to be part of an international science team working for the US military. Daniel pauses before he responds.

ELLIE: I don't believe you, by the way. You may have Richard fooled, you can't really expect me to believe that you, a British woman and a Chinese man are all members of the United States military. Who are you and what are you doing on our island?
FARADAY: You wanna know who I am?
(Faraday approaches her, and she backs up.)
FARADAY: I'm your best chance at disarming that bomb.
ELLIE: Right, then, disarm it.
Daniel turns to see a large hydrogen bomb dangling within a wooden structure. Daniel climbs the structure and walks along a catwalk examining the bomb while Ellie remains on the ground. Daniel finds a small leak in the bomb and quickly climbs down and instructs Ellie to move away from the bomb. Ellie threatens to shoot Daniel for lying to her; Daniel calls her bluff and offers advice to dispose of the bomb.

ELLIE: I swear, if you try anything...
FARADAY: If I try anything--what, you're gonna--you're gonna shoot me? Is that right? Yeah, that would be perfect because, of course, rifle fire right next to--what would you call this--hydrogen bomb? Yes, fantastic idea. Really... inspired. Okay, listen to me. Do you people have any access to lead or concrete?
ELLIE: For what?
FARADAY: There's a crack in the casing. It needs to be filled with lead. You need to take it off this platform carefully and bury it.
ELLIE: You brought me all the way out here to tell us that we have to bury it? You told Alpert you could disarm that thing.
Ellie presses Daniel for why he knows that this will work; Daniel asks her to simply trust him and bury it. Ellie presses him again; Daniel panics and tells her that the Island will be ok in 50 years. Ellie readies her rifle.
FARADAY: There you-- (sighs)
ELLIE: What did you just say?
FARADAY: Whoa. Take it easy. I can explain myself a little better. I know how this sounds. Believe me, it's... oh, it's hard to explain. 50 years from now, me and my... me and my friends--that's where we're from, okay? And--here's the key--everything's fine. I'm not saying it's perfectly fine, but there hasn't been any atomic blast, all right? There has not--

As Ellie continues to steady her rifle on Daniel Sawyer emerges from the jungle pointing a gun at Ellie and demand she drop her gun. Juliet follows and asks everyone to drop their guns. Sawyer notices the bomb and exclaims his concern. Mockingly, Ellie asks if they are also time travelers, Sawyer expresses his shock and disappointment in Daniel for telling her.

Daniel races back to the location of the tents and immediately checks on Charlotte. She smiles and tells him she is fine but begins to stumble. She falls onto the ground, her nose is bleeding, Daniel holds her in his arms, he is visibly worried.

The Little Prince - S5e4
Juliet attempts to wake Charlotte and presses Daniel for information he has regarding her condition. Daniel explains that her brain is experiencing a really bad "jet lag" resulting from the time jumping but doesn't offer an answer to Juliet's follow up question why it isn't happening to anybody else.
JULIET: Did you know this was going to happen?
DANIEL: 7 minutes. [mumbles] I think its neurological. Our brains have an internal clock, a sense of time. The flashes throw the clock off. Its like really bad jet lag.
JULIET: But bad jet lag doesn’t make you hemorrhage Daniel. You wanna tell me why it isn't happening to the rest of us?
DANIEL: I don’t know [Lost chime] Thank God it's not. [Tends to Charlotte]

Charlotte begins to stir but initially expresses confusion about where she is. She then recognizes Daniel and he is relieved. She tells Daniel that she feels dizzy but fine.

With Charlotte ready to move again Sawyer announces that the group needs to go to the Orchid station.
While walking through the Sawyer and Daniel discuss before seeing a light in the jungle a distance away. Locke tells the group that they should go away from the light towards the beach. Daniel asks Locke if he knows when they are but Locke tells them they should keep moving.

SAWYER: Beach is this way. Now you wanna take the scenic route?

As the group continues Daniel asks Charlotte how she is feeling and tells her that they will rest when they get to the Orchid. The group hears a woman scream and Sawyer goes to investigate the noise. While Sawyer is away from the group a time jump occurs.
JUMP 6
The group continues walking towards the beach now in daylight. Miles tells Daniel that he has experienced a nose bleed. Daniel tells him that the nose bleeds may be a result of long exposure to living on the Island.

MILES: Hey, I just got a nose bleed.
DANIEL: What? When?
MILES: Let's just not freak out the others, ok? Just tell me. Why her? Why me?
DANIEL: I don’t know. Huh, I think it might have something to do with duration of exposure you know, the amount of time you’ve spent on the island?
MILES: Doesn’t make any sense, those yahoos have been here for months. I've never been here before 2 weeks ago.
DANIEL: Are you sure about that?
They reach the beach camp and find it ransacked. The zodiac is missing but there are now two long boats in on the sand. The group decide to take one of the boats to the Orchid.

[Miles is pointing to two outriggers laying upright on the beach. The group walks over toward them.]
CHARLOTTE: Where did these come from?
DANIEL: That's a good question. They're pretty old.

Daniel is with the group in the jungle during the next flash and find themselves reunited with Jin. While Sawyer and Jin are talking several feet away Miles, Charlotte and Daniel fill canteens in a stream discussing how Jin managed to find them during the time jumps.
MILES: Where’d that guy come from? I thought he was on the boat.
DANIEL: The blast must have thrown him in the water. He’s been moving with every flash just like us.

Jin approaches the three speaking quickly in Korean and asking that for a translation. Sawyer mistakenly presumes Jin is asking Miles to translate; Jin looks directly at Charlotte and asks for a translation. Charlotte translates Jin's question confirming that Locke knows that Sun is alright but he needs to go to the Orchid station in order to bring her back to the Island because he believes she and the O6 never should have left.

The reunited group is following a stream in the jungle and Daniel and Charlotte discuss what is happening and Locke's plan. Daniel asks Charlotte if she speaks any other languages.
CHARLOTTE: Just Klingon. Dan, is this gonna work?
DANIEL: It does make empirical sense that if this started at the Orchid that’s where it gonna stop. But as far as bringing back the people who left in order to stop these temporal shifts that’s where we leave science behind.
Charlotte stumbles as Daniel grabs her arm asking if she's ok when the metallic buzzing starts and the sky brightens.

The group emerges in darkness and in apparent pain from the time jump. The buzzing sound is heard again and the sky lightens.

They emerge from the time jump in day light and Charlotte faints. Her nose is bloody and her eyes are open; staring towards the tree tops. Daniel kneels over her and listens for breathing. Juliet kneels beside him and hands Sawyer her gun tending to Charlotte. Dan speaks to Charlotte and she regains consciousness and begins to speak in Korean, then English.

[Charlotte appears to awaken staring at Jin now standing over her and staring at her. She lifts her head up and looks directly at Jin.]
CHARLOTTE: [Speaks to Jin] (Speaks Korean distraught and desperate.)
SAWYER: What’d she say?
CHARLOTTE: [Speaks to Jin] Don’t let them bring her back. [Crying] No matter what. Don’t them bring her back. This place is death!
Charlotte is laying on the ground speaking randomly of marrying an American and leaving her father. The group wants to keep moving without Charlotte but Daniel insists on taking her with them. As they are discussing this the buzzing begins and the sky brightens.

The group emerges in apparent pain insisting that they continue moving towards the Orchid without Charlotte as time appears to be running out. Charlotte, in a moment of lucidity, agrees that they should continue without her; Daniel decides to stay with Charlotte. Sawyer asks Locke how they will find the Orchid station if they aren't in a time of it's existence; Charlotte tells them to look for the well. Bewildered by Charlotte's information the group leaves as Daniel stays with Charlotte.

Charlotte is still laying on the ground talking with Daniel. She tells Daniel that she is remembering much of her past, including memories of living on the Island and people she met.
CHARLOTTE: I grew up here. On the Island. And there was this thing… this Dharma Initiative. I moved away with my mum. Just my mum; I never saw my dad again. Then when I got back to England I asked my mum about this place, yeah. But she would say that it wasn’t real and that I made it up. That’s why I became an anthropologist. To find this Island again. It’s what I’ve been searching for my whole life.
DANIEL: Charlotte. Why are you telling me this?
CHARLOTTE: Because I remember something now. When I was little, living here. There was this man, crazy man. He really scared me. And he told me that I had to leave the Island and never ever come back.[excited] He told me that if I came back I would die.
DANIEL: Charlotte. I don’t understand.
CHARLOTTE: Daniel. I think that man was you.

Charlotte is coughing while lying on the ground. Daniel is with her. She is in obvious pain; Daniel tells her that he is confident that Desmond will deliver a message to his mother and that she will help them.

[Charlotte looks at Daniel with disbelief.]
CHARLOTTE: How can your mother help up?
DANIEL: She can. She…
Charlotte begins to cough violently; blood continues to trickle out of her nose. She stops coughing and she flashes a tranquil smile towards Daniel.
DANIEL: What?
CHARLOTTE: I’m not allowed to have chocolate before dinner.
[Charlotte nods her head. Her eyes wide open, she stops moving.]
DANIEL: Charlotte. Charlotte. Charlotte. No… (sobs)

DANIEL: [crying] She's, uh, dead. She's dead. There's another flash. She was, she was gone. Um, her body just [sobbing] disappeared. [pause] She moved on and we stayed. [crying]
JULIET: I'm so sorry.
Sawyer presses Daniel for more information about their situation.
SAWYER: Hold on. Wait a minute. We stayed? We're not traveling through time anymore? You saying it's over?
DANIEL: Of course it's over. Wherever we are now [sigh] whenever we are now [long pause] we're here for good.
[Juliet and Sawyer try to grasp what Daniel is saying.]
Daniel continues to mumble to himself as the group decides their next move. Daniel doesn't appear to be paying attention to them.
DANIEL: Won't do it. Won't, not, I'm, I'm…
JULIET: Okay.
DANIEL: …not, I, I won't, …
JULIET: Okay.

The group decides to head back to the beach and while walking through the jungle they hear gun shots. Sawyer leads the group to toward the noise where they find two men holding a woman captive while another man is laying on the ground, seemingly dead from the gun shots. They have placed a bag on her head and one man is pointing a gun at her. Sensing the urgency Miles presses Daniel for the prime directive clarification.

Sawyer decides to get involved and moves forward with his rifle pointed at the armed man and demands he lower his gun. Daniel remains seated on a log away from the confrontation.

Daniel is leading the group absent mindlessly as he nearly walks through the sonic barrier before Juliet shouts to him to stop walking. Careful not to reveal that she knows much about the device Juliet asks Amy to disarm what she describes as a "some kind of sonic fence". Amy moves toward the control pannel, flips the access door open, stands up and walks through the perimiter and motions that it is now safe for them to walk through it.

As Daniel says this a young red headed girl runs by the table with her mother looking for her father. She turns to the group and waves. Daniel suspects she is Charlotte.
LITTLE GIRL: Mama, where's dad?
MOTHER: Come on, luv. [inaudible]
[The little red headed girl runs from her mother. She stops, turns and waves.]
DANIEL: Charlotte.

Horace and Sawyer approach the group and Horace explains that they will be staying the night but leaving the Island in the morning on a submarine. When Horace leaves Sawyer explains that he used an alias, LaFleur, and a cover story that they are survivors of a wrecked ship looking for their other crew members. As they are discussing a lound siren blares and the others in the camp begin running into houses. The group is led to a house and told to wait there. Richard Alpert is seen through the window entering the camp as Horace meets him; the two talk.
Horace leaves Richard and comes into the house asking about the bodies that were buried but "LaFleur" offers to talk with the man and explain that his group was responsible for what happened. Horace agrees and "LaFleur" exits the house and approaches Richard.

Miles and Dan knock on Jack's door and step inside when Jack opens the door, seemingly who had been sleeping. Dan wants to know how they got to the Island and Jack tells Dan that his mother set it up. Dan asks if she told him it was "his destiny" and Jack says yes. Daniel is visibly concerned and tells Jack that she is wrong; that he does not belong here.
DANIEL: How did you get back to the Island?
[Miles follows Dan inside as Jack closes the door.]
JACK: Where have you been?
DANIEL: I was-I was just at DHARMA headquarters in Ann Arbor. I was doing some research. What's more important right now... how did you get back here?... to 1977?

JACK: (looking down as he speaks) Uhhhhhh... we were on a plane... and then-
DANIEL: Who told you to get on a plane?
JACK: As a matter of fact, Dan, it was your mother.
[Jack blinks the last of the sleep away as he looks up at Dan, who closes his eyes for a moment and sighs before continuing.]
DANIEL: And how did she convince you, Jack? Did she tell you it was your... destiny?
JACK: Yeah. That's exactly what she said.
DANIEL: Well, I got some bad news for you, Jack. You don't belong here at all. She was wrong.

Young Daniel is playing SONG on the piano while a metronome counts the time. As he finishes the song his mother approaches sitting next to him. She tells him that his playing is beautiful but that he needs to focus his talents and asks if he knows what destiny is; Daniel says that he does not. She explains that his gifted mind needs to study sciences and maths and not music; that this is his destiny. Stopping the metronome she asks Daniel how many times it had beaten since he began playing; 864 he replies without thinking. Daniel offers to make time to do both; she tells him that he cannot make time, nobody can.
HAWKING: Daniel... do you know what destiny means?
DANIEL: (with a shake of his head) No.
HAWKING: Destiny means that, if one has a special gift, then it must be nurtured.
[Eloise reaches a hand over and stops the metronome.]
HAWKING: How many beats has that metronome counted since you started playing?
DANIEL: Eight hundred sixty-four.
HAWKING: Your gift, Daniel, is your mind. A mind that is meant for science... mathematics. And it's my... job... to keep you on your path. So... unfortunately, there's no more time... (indicates piano with her eyes) for distractions.
DANIEL: But I want to keep playing the piano. I can do both. I can make time.
HAWKING: If only you could.
[Scene closes with Eloise closing the lid over the keyboard of the piano.

Dan follows Dr. Chang to the lower level of the station where Dr. Chang is discussing the recent death of a worker. Daniel listens from a distance as Dr. Chang explains to the other worker that they have drilled into a pocket of almost limitless energy and they must not drill any further. Daniel is instructed to wear a hard hat by another worker and puts one on and places a large tank on his shoulder party obscuring his face from Dr. Chang as he begins to walk towards him. As they pass each other they bump and Daniel apologizes, Dr. Chang doesn't take notice of Daniel. Reaching the body of the dead worker examines the situation as the worker just speaking with Dr. Chang mentions to Dan that he believes Dr. Chang's comment about time travel is crazy. Daniel politely agrees and walks back toward Dr. Chang interrupting Dr. Chang's conversation with the man who previously told Daniel to wear a hard hat.

Recognizes Daniel, Dr. Chang acknowledges him as a recent arrival with the science team and one of Jim LaFleur's crew that arrived in 1974. Daniel's pleads with Dr. Chang to order the drilling to be stopped at the Orchid station in order to prevent a similar, yet more powerful explosion. Skeptical of how Daniel would know this, Daniel tells Dr. Chang he knows this because he is from the future as they ride the elevator up to the ground level.
DANIEL: I need you to order the evacuation of every man, woman and child on this Island.
CHANG: Now why would I do that?
DANIEL: Because that man is on a stretcher as a consequence of the electromagnetic activity that your drilling unleashed down here.
CHANG: Which is now contained.
[Chang raises the bar at the opening of the lift and enters it followed closely by Dan. After lowering the bar, Chang hits the switch to raise the lift. Their conversation continues as they rise to the surface.]
DANIEL: It's contained down here. But in about six hours, the same thing is gonna happen at the site for the Swan station, only the energy there is about thirty thousand times more powerful, sir. And the accident... it's gonna be catastrophic.
[Chang looks around in complete disbelief.]
CHANG: That is utterly absurd. What could possibly qualify you to make that kind of prediction?
[Chang stares him down as Dan struggles with his answer to the question.]
CHANG: Hmm?
DANIEL: I'm... from the future.
[Chang gazes blankly at Dan.]

Dr. Chang is increasing suspicious of Daniel's information as he is told that Miles is in fact his son. Miles does not confirm Daniel's information suggesting that Daniel is still affected by the drugs administered during the submarine voyage and walks Daniel to the van. Miles presses Dan for why he has told Dr. Chang this information to which Dan replies he is attempting to ensure that Dr. Chang follows through with what he needs to do.
CHANG: Please... stay away from me.
[With this, Chang gets into the passenger side of the van. The driver cranks the engine and begins to drive away, not stopping while Dan still calls out to Chang.]
DANIEL: Dr. Chang! Dr. Chang! If you-
[Dan is then stopped by Miles and pushed slightly away from the van as Chang departs.]
MILES: Hey! Hey! Are you out of your mind? What are you doing?
DANIEL: I'm just making sure that your father does what he's supposed to do.
MILES: And what's that?
[Dan pauses with a knowing look at Miles.]
DANIEL: You'll see.

Ms. Hawking insist that she and Daniel spend time together alone to celebrate despite Daniel's insistence that Theresa accompany them but Theresa express understanding of her request.

Daniel and Ms. Hawking sit in an Indian restaurant discussing his plans. She explains that he needs to focus on his work and not get involved with his lab assistant even though Daniel calls Theresa his girlfriend. Defeated, Daniel asks what else he needs to do after being the youngest Doctoral graduate from Oxford and being awarded a 1.5 million pound grant and after some thought remembers that the benefactor is Charles Widmore, a wealthy industrialist.

Ms. Widmore pushes a neatly wrapped present in front of Daniel and excuses herself from the table. Alone, Daniel unwraps the present: a leather notebook with two ornamental designs on the front cover and a personalized inscription on the first page:

DANIEL: Only because that's what you always push me to do. You pushed and you've pushed and you've pushed. And when will it be enough, Mother? When? I'm the youngest doctorate to ever graduate from Oxford. I just got a new 1.5 million pound research grant...
[Eloise takes great notice at the mention of the grant, with her facial features rising.]
DANIEL: ...what else do I have to do?
HAWKING: (very happily) A grant? That's wonderful! From whom?
DANIEL: (looking down) I don't know. Um... some industrialist. Widmore, I think.
[Eloise sharply eyes Dan at the mention of the name Widmore but Dan does not notice as he continues to look down.]
DANIEL: Charles Widmore.
[After a moment of obviously thinking about Widmore, Eloise shakes her head and tries to lighten the mood with a laugh. She smiles and continues speaking in a pleasant, almost whispering tone of voice.]
HAWKING: I don't want to fight with you, Daniel. That's not why I came.
DANIEL: (looking up again now) Why did you come?
[Eloise reaches down next to her and comes back up with a blue gift box, complete with a large, purple bow on top.]
HAWKING: To congratulate you.

Dan and Miles return to the barracks and knock on Sawyer and Juliet's door. Sawyer opens the door and invites them to join the discussion already in progress with the Jack, Kate, Hurley and Juliet. Daniel asks to be taken to the Hostiles explaining that his mother is not only a hostile but that she can help them fix the situation that he claims is dangerous.
DANIEL: Jack, I'm sorry if I was rude before... but what I came to do is of critical importance to everyone in this room. Does anyone know where I can find the Hostiles?
[Sawyer looks up in surprise at this as Jack and Kate trade glances.]
JULIET: Why do you need to know that, Daniel?
[Dan pauses to look down for a moment, then looks up in response.]
DANIEL: Because one of them is my mother. (surprised looks at this revelation) And she is the only person on this Island who can get us back to where we belong.

A knock is heard on the door and the caretaker goes to see who it is. A man walks into the room and Daniel stands to greet him apologizing for not recognizing him. The man assures Daniel it is ok and introduces himself as "Charles Widmore". Daniel immediately recognizes the name and apologizes for hurting a girl and that he had tested it on himself first and believed it safe.
DANIEL: I tested it... I tested it out on myself first.
WIDMORE: It's all right, Daniel.
DANIEL: I would never hurt Theresa.
WIDMORE: Please. It's all right. That's not why I'm here. I came to offer you a new opportunity.
Again, Charles assures Daniel he does not blame him for what happened but has come to offer him a chance to do something very special. Charles tells Daniel that the plane that is seen on the tv being in the bottom of the Indian Ocean is fake because he put it there and that the survivors of the real plane crash are alive and well on an Island.
WIDMORE: Because come tomorrow, you won't remember I did. (pause) Daniel, the real Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on an Island. A special Island, with unique scientific properties. (pause) I want to send you to the Island. It will further your research, show you things... you'd never dream of. But more importantly... it will heal you, Daniel. Your mind, your memory.
DANIEL: Heal me?
[Widmore answers with a smile and a nod.]
DANIEL: W-why are you doing all this for me?
WIDMORE: Because you're a man of tremendous gifts and it would be a shame to see them go to waste.
[Dan replies with what can only be described as half laugh and half sob.]
DANIEL: You sound like my mother.
WIDMORE: (chuckles) That's because we're old friends.

Sawyer sensing that the Dharma folks will soon discover the tangeled web they have been weaving offers an alternative plans: leave on the sub or return to the beach and set up camp, preferring the beach camp idea.
Daniel presses the group to seek out the Hostiles and Juliet tells him the sonar fence code and how to find the Hostiles suggesting that Jack and Kate take Daniel to them since it appears they have to leave the barracks regardless. Jack, Kate and Daniel proceed to the motor pool but Daniel changes direction telling them that he has something to do first but he will have meet them at the motor pool.

Daniel approaches a young red-headed girl swinging on the swing set.
DANIEL: I'll meet you at the motor pool. I need just a minute. Okay?
[Jack and Kate depart and Dan walks over to a young Charlotte, who is sitting in a swing and eating a candy bar.]
CHARLOTTE: I'm not allowed to have chocolate before dinner.
DANIEL: (sigh) It's okay, sweetheart. I won't tell.
CHARLOTTE: My name's Charlotte. What's yours?
DANIEL: I'm Daniel. I'm new here.
[Dan kneels in front of Charlotte.]
DANIEL: Listen. Do you know Dr. Chang?
CHARLOTTE: Uh-huh.
DANIEL: Yeah? Hopefully really soon, Dr. Chang is gonna ask a bunch of people to get on the submarine and leave the Island.
[As Dan continues, his emotions get the better of him and his voice cracks a bit in places.]
DANIEL: When he does, you and your mommy... you're gonna have to leave. In case what I do doesn't work, you cannot be here. You have to leave.
[Charlotte sniffles and softly cries.]
DANIEL: I tried to avoid telling you this. I didn't think I could change things. But maybe I can.

Daniel approach Jack and Kate who are arming themselves with rifles and pistols from a closet at the motor pool; Daniel requests a "beginners" gun, Jack gives him a pistol.

They are interrupted when Radzinsky and two other Dharma workers, all carrying guns wanting to know why Daniel, a recent arrival is at the motor pool. Daniel tells he just left Dr. Chang told him to help with an accident at the Orchid but Radzinsky counters claiming to have just left Dr. Chang at his home and then notices that Daniel is holding a gun.
RADZINSKY: What's going on here? Aren't you one of the physicists off the sub?
[The two guys with Radzinsky are both armed with rifles.]
DANIEL: Yeah, that's right. Uh, we were just making sure that-
RADZINSKY: You're supposed to be out at the Swan site.
DANIEL: Right. Uh, there was-there was an accident at the Orchid station. Dr. Chang asked us to help.
[Dan had been casually hiding the pistol behind him at first but apparently forgot it was in his hand because he turned and let Radzinsky see it.]
RADZINSKY: He's got a gun!
[Radzinsky pulls a pistol and points it at Dan, while his other two guys raise their rifles on the ready. Jack also brings a pistol up, letting them know more than just Dan is armed.]
RADZINSKY: I just left Dr. Chang. He's at home with his wife and baby. You're lying. Now drop the guns and get down on the ground!
[Holding his hands out in front of him, Dan steps closer to Radzinsky and attempts to talk his way out of the situation.]
DANIEL: Hey. Listen to me. Listen. You really do not understand what's happening here. You have no idea. We have no time. We have to leave. All right? So we're just gonna leave. Okay? Nobody's-no...
[Radzinsky fires first but only grazes Dan across the neck. On his way down though, Dan fires back and hits Radzinsky in the hand, causing him to cry out.

One of Radzinsky's crew shoots Daniel, the bullet grazes his neck. A shoot out ensues. Jack, Kate and Daniel regroup and Jack tells them to get to the jeep while he covers them. As the two tumble into the jeep a large explosion occurs near Radzinsky and his crew as a several gasoline barrels explode. Jack climbs in the jeep and Kate drives away quickly as the windshield shatters from a bullet fired in their direction.

Ms. Hawking enters unexpectedly, Daniel greets her. She asks Daniel if he will accept Charles Widmore's offer to go to the Island, confirming that the Island will help him. Daniel expresses concern that he is ill-equipped mentally to perform the complex calculations required but she assures him not to worry about that because it is his destiny and the Island will in fact help him.
HAWKING: I hear you have been offered a job.
[Dan looks back at his mother with a mixture of suspicion and confusion.]
DANIEL: How do you know that?
HAWKING: Well, it's my business to know. I came here, Daniel, to tell you that it is very important that you say yes to Mr. Widmore... that you accept this opportunity.
DANIEL: I can't. He needs someone who can do really, really complex space-time calibrations and calculate bearings and I just... I don't know how to do that anymore.
HAWKING: Daniel... this place he mentioned to you, this Island... did he tell you that it could make you better?
[Dan looks up again at Eloise.]
HAWKING: What if it's true? Why, then you could go on with your work. Just think of all you could accomplish.
DANIEL: You really want me to... to go?
HAWKING: Yes.
DANIEL: Will... will it make you proud of me?
[Eloise takes a long, slow breath, then smiling and speaking softly, she responds.]
HAWKING: Yes, Daniel. It will.
[After an extended moment to think this through, Dan, still on the verge of tears mixed with confusion, replies.]
DANIEL: Then I'll do it.

The jeep reaches the sonar fence and Kate stops near a pylon indicating that they will have to leave the jeep and walk the remainder of the way after she turns off the fence. Daniel stresses to Jack that they need to be careful because despite Jack's insistence that Whatever happened happened this is not their past and that any of them can die. Kate indicates that the fence is off and they can proceed; the group begins to walk into the jungle.
DANIEL: You gotta understand, Jack, this is our present. When we met, did I have a scar on my neck? No. 'Cause I hadn't been shot yet. We can't be so naive as to think nothing can happen to us. Any one of us can die, Jack.

The three reach a stream and take a break. Kate sits across the stream on a large root of a large tree as Jack presses Daniel for more information. Daniel explains to them that he has been busy studying relative physics and that he has come to the conclusion that although changing the past is not possible changing the future is when variables, such as the Jack, Kate and other time travelers, are introduced into the equation. Daniel explains that he hopes to neutralize the affect of the explosion he knows will occur in 4 hours at the construction site of the Swan station by detonating Jughead, the Hydrogen bomb he inspected on the Island in 1954. By doing so, Daniel expects to reverse the incident that necessitates the need for Desmond to push the button which he neglects to push on September 22, 2004 causing the crash of Oceanic 815 and the subsequent events including Daniel and the science teams arrival on the Island.
JACK: You ready to tell me why she was wrong? Why we don't belong here?
[Kate rises from her position on the tree root as Jack and Dan sit next to each other on the creek bed.]
DANIEL: In about four hours, the DHARMA folks at the Swan work site... they're gonna... they're gonna drill into the ground and accidentally tap into a massive pocket of energy.
[Kate comes over to them, hands Jack the canteen, then joins them in sitting.]
DANIEL: The result of the release of this energy would be catastrophic. So in order to contain it, they're gonna have to cement the entire area in, like Chernobyl.
[Dan stands as he continues his explanation.]
DANIEL: And this containment... the place they built over it... I believe you called it "the Hatch." The Swan hatch?
[Jack and Kate share a glance at this revelation.]
DANIEL: Because of this one accident, these people are gonna spend the next twenty years keeping that energy at bay... by pressing a button... a button that your friend, Desmond, will one day fail to push... and that will cause your plane, Oceanic 815, to crash on this Island. And because your plane crashed, a freighter will be sent to this Island; a freighter I was on and Charlotte was on and so forth. This entire chain of events... it's gonna start happening this afternoon. But... we can change that. I studied relativistic physics my entire life. One thing emerged over and over; can't change the past. Can't do it. Whatever happened, happened. All right? But then, I finally realized... I had been spending so much time focused on the constants, I forgot about the variables. Do you know what the variables in these equations are, Jack?
[Jack smiles and shakes his head.]
JACK: No.
DANIEL: Us. We're the variables. People. We think. We reason. We make choices. We have free will. We can change... our destiny. I think I can negate that energy under the Swan. I think I can destroy it. If I can, then that hatch will never be built... and your plane... your plane will land, just like it's supposed to, in Los Angeles.
KATE: And just how exactly do you plan on destroying this energy?
DANIEL: I'm gonna detonate a hydrogen bomb.
The three continue walking eventually arriving at the Hostiles camp, Daniel removes his backpack leaving it with Jack and Kate as he walks cautiously into the camp with his pistol drawn. He descends a small hill near a man sitting near a tent motioning him to stay quiet; he fires two shots when the man suddenly moves towards a rifle leaning near him. Now noticed by the Hostiles Daniel demands to be taken to Eloise Hawking. Richard Alpert approaches Daniel holding a cup asking him to calm down and lower his gun and asks if they know each other. Daniel demands to know where the Hydrogen bomb is that he had told them to bury and again asks where Eloise Hawking is; giving Richard until three to tell him.
DANIEL: It doesn't matter. I need you to take me to Eloise.
RICHARD: I-I already told you, she's not here, so let's just take it easy.
[Dan, with gun still aimed at Richard, steps even closer to him.]
DANIEL: Where's the bomb, Richard? The hydrogen bomb that I told you people to bury, where is it?
RICHARD: Listen to me. Lower your gun and we'll talk. Okay? Nobody has to get hurt here. Just put the gun down.
He begins to count but before reaching three a shot is heard and Daniel is shot through the back; he falls to the ground. Upset, Richard throws his cup to the ground and approaches Daniel but looking beyond him at a woman holding the gun. DANIEL: I'm gonna give you three seconds. One...
RICHARD: Don't do this.
DANIEL: Two...
GUNSHOT/DANIEL DROPS
RICHARD: Why did you do that?
HAWKING: He had a gun on you.
[Richard kneels beside Dan to check on him, seemingly shocked that Eloise had shot the man.]
RICHARD: He wasn't gonna shoot me, Eloise.

Addressing her as Ellie, he tell asks why she shot indicating that Daniel would not have shot him. Lying on the ground Daniel looks up at the woman who shot him in disbelief mumbling to her that he can't believe that she sent him to the Island knowing that she would shoot him. Elloise asks Daniel who he is; he tells her that he is her son before dying.
[Eloise stands over the man she has just shot, looking down at him. Dan, struggling to breath, looks up at his mother.]
DANIEL: Eloise? (weakly) You knew. You always knew. (gasping for breath) You knew this was gonna happen and you... you sent me here anyway.
HAWKING: Who are you?
DANIEL: I... I'm your son.
