View Full Version : Sandwich Solutions?
This might sound odd, but here goes: I'm trying to think of sandwiches that I can make that I can leave out of the refrigerator for long periods of time, about 3-4 hours, before eating. Or sandwiches that might be sitting in a hot car for a bit.
One thing I figured was substituting butter for mayo or miracle whip.
Anyone out there have any good ideas? :Cowdance:
Cranky, we dont have a fridge at work, so when I bring my lunch I make sure to not all anything that might spoil from being at room temp or warmer for 6 hours... if I have a sandwich, i get some little packages of mayo and mustard and use those... they can stay at room temp and not spoil. Also, same with salad. I get dressing in little packages.

Bingo.
I don't have a fridge in my building at work right now. I use these:

in my lunch box. They work remarkably well. The sandwich is always still cold at lunch time. Just remember to put them in the freezer when you get home.

Peanut butter will last quite awhile unless it's warm out where you'll be. For the jelly I'd use those little packages that the others are mentioning, otherwise your bread will turn into a soggy mess.
I've had Arby's roast beef that sat out a few hours at a picnic that turned out fine. If it's got cheese on it though, skip it. Any dairy type stuff, unless it's that fake cheese spray in a can. :)

In the summer, leave a can of soup, the pop-off kind, on the dashboard. At around 12-1 o'clock, it should be ready to sip.
In the winter, put ice cream bars in the back seat. Yummy.

Oh... :rotfl:
Thanks for the ideas!
I never thought about the lil packets of mustard and mayo.
Sals, you will simply have to let me borrow your My Little Pony lunch box. Then I can use OP's ice packs and be set.

Try a peanut butter and banana sandwich!

I dunno, Cranky...it's very special to me. I have a Roy Rogers lunch box with thermos you can borrow. It served me well when I was in grammar school.
Shall I take the burglary tools out or can you use those as well?

"Dry" salami can sit out for quite a while. I don't think anything can live in that much salt.

you can always put cooked breakfast sausage on a hamburger bun with mustard. I have done that. That won't go bad.

Of course I have no use for those.
P.S. Do not take them out. :shifty:

Sandwiches with hard cheese won't go bad quickly either!
My procedure was a flexible insulated lunch pack with a compartment for
the ice pack. It really worked.
I employed this system because I didn't
want to walk all the way around to the teacher lounge refrigerator at one
school. By the time I would get back lunch would have been over.
As for foods that don't need refrigeration, sunflower seeds, peanut
butter or peanuts and popcorn are about all i can come up with right now.
I would gladly search the net for one of these packs for you. Dez is
definitely on the right track with the ice packs (or whatever they are called).

:awwhug: Aww, thanks. I think I have this under wraps, though. I'm just going to try a combination of ideas suggested here.
