View Full Version : Happy hour drink recipes
We all have them. Know a good recipe for a cocktail? Share it here!
I found a recipe online a few days ago that I was waiting to try. Well, today I went out and bought all the ingredients. I'm currently sipping on one right now and I like it so much I wanted to share!
This is called a Dave Matthews. Here's what you need:
(pictures courtesy of me :D)
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/ToWhateverEnd/Main%20Album/davematthews.jpg
1 oz. decent amaretto almond liquer. (not that $5 stuff you see on the bottom shelf)
1 oz. decent coconut-flavored rum
.5 oz. decent plain vodka
¾ oz. pineapple juice
¼ oz. cranberry juice
1 cocktail shaker
1 rocks glass
Mix together with ice in a cocktail shaker and strain over ice.
Final product, which...looks kind of like mud but tastes kind of like WIN:

What a fine idea for a thread! I have no recipes to add at the moment, but I look forward to seeing what other people suggest.

HA! I was just thinking about starting a bartending thread... :rotfl:
I have a friend who owns a restaurant, and the girl she has now tending bar in the evenings is cute and all, but afraid to make mixed drinks. She'll pour beer and make rum & coke basically, so I'm looking to help her out.
But here's my question: I've heard about bartenders recommending certain drinks. How one leads into another. Stuff like that. Anybody know anything about that?

One of my fave's is French Martini.
Equal parts chambord, Grand Marnier and sours
or the dollar menu version:
equal parts razzmatazz, southern comfort and sours.
Alot bars mix it with pinepple instead of sours but that makes it way to sweet, you need the sours to cut the chambord some....I've seen it made with vodka to but don't like that version as much

I don't know....I've never had to make a Purple Hooter now that i think of it, i have no idea what's in one so it sure could be.

Here's one that we served to a friend on his last night in town
Mexican Nightmare
1 shot Quervo Gold
1 shot Jagermeister
Mix with Ice, Strain and serve
He barely made it to the facilities
Razzmatazz should never substitute for Chambord! Besides tasting better, the bottle is the coolest. :D

Agreed Mattie!
jamiept I think that drink would kill me!
Speaking of deadly concoctions, A ChloJob:
Layer Jager, Vodka and sprite in a glass over ice, suck entire drink down at once threw a straw.....Same thing as a Minderaser substituing jager for Kaluha

There are a few variations of how to make a margarita, but I prefer this ratio:
1 1/2 oz. tequila
1 oz. cointreau (triple sec if you must)
.5 lime juice
Other varations:
2, 1.5, 1
1, .5, .5
3, 2, 1

Omg, one or two shots of Jager I can do. Just barely. I can't imagine what that would even taste like mixed with the Vodka!

I'm having a party and I was going to pre-mix Cosmos so people can just pour them (into these adorable mini martini glasses a friend is loaning me!). How far ahead can I make the drinks? Can I just mix it up and store it in the fridge until ready to serve? (It won't really work with the party to make them individually.)
Or does it not really matter?

my personal fav drink.... I made it up
in the produce section there are these packets to make slushies and stuff, find the orange julius one, it calls for 2 cups OJ and ice cubes put in blender and serve...
what I do....
1 cup OJ
1 cup peach schnapps
make as usual, put in a pitcher, stick a straw in and enjoy! I call them frozen Fuzzy Navels

My personal favorite is called a prickly pear martini:
Grey Goose Pear vodka - like 1 1/2 shots
Cointreau - 1/2 shot
sour mix - 1/2 shot
shake over scrushed ice and strain into a martini glass
a few of these, and I'm feeling no pain. perfect.

Hmm... as a bartender I should have something to post here. I got nothing, lol.
Well, I do have some advice. Don't buy Kahlua unless you want to have it FOREVER. The only really good way to drink Kahlua is with vodka and a little bit it milk. :p (I don't like coffee, so coffee drinks are out) I had a whole bottle for like 6 months. The only other way I drank it was in a Frozen Coke, which is kahlua, milk, and a splash of Coke. It tastes okay, but Kahlua alone doesn't get ya drunk ;)
I'm making margaritas tonight. I've already decided...
Liquid Cocaine:
1 part Jagermeister
1 part Rumplemintz
1 part Goldschlager
Pour over ice in a shaker, shake, strain into shot glasses.

My ingredients for tonight (thanks Britt :p)
Margaritas have all different ratios of tequila/grand marnier/lime juice. Certain people like stiffer drinks than others, or more lime than others, etc...
The ratio I like is going down .5 for each.
1.5 oz. tequila
1 oz. grand marnier
.5 lime juice
3/2/1 is a popular ratio as well
3 parts tequila
2 parts grand marnier
1 part lime juice

What's the mix for a sidecar? I keep wanting to try one.
3/4 oz cointreau / triple-sec
1/2 oz cognac
3/4 oz lemon juice
or
1 1/2 oz. Brandy
1/2 oz. cointreau / triple-sec
1/2 oz. Lemon or Lime Juice
I dunno...never had one...I don't know what the best ratio is! :(

Well T-Day dinner is over and my contribution was am A-1 hit. I was asked to bring Margaritas. After much testing, here was the winning recipe
4 cups Jose Quervo
4 cups Triple Sec
2 cups Rose's Sweetened Lime Juice
Dice and Muddle 2 limes and 1 orange
Looked good, tasted better.....
I'm having Thanksgiving with jamiept next year! We never have margaritas at our Thanksgiving and I think that's a shame!

Coffee milk is a new one on me. What is it, Mattie? (keep in mind I don't get out much :o)
Just a coffee syrup that is used to flavor milk / milkshakes, etc. Like a chocolate or strawberry syrup for milk.
But I quickly learned it's a New England / Massachusetts thing. LOL. Our McDonalds all have coffee milkshakes and such. Since I grew up having coffee milk, I never knew it wasn't a common thing in other states. It was funny when she brought me 1 cup of coffee and 1 cup of milk.

OMG - :rotfl: Look!
The drink is difficult to find outside of the New England region, however, and travelers requesting it are often mistakenly served coffee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee) with milk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk).

Cool! I bet I would like that. My mother used to give me a teeny bit of coffee in my milk when I was a toddler - she'd probably be hauled away for that today.
It doesn't actually taste like coffee at all though. It's...more of a manmade type of flavor, I guess. Can't really describe it. :( But it's great. :D
Okay, my first time making this drink. I searched a bunch of recipes but most sites agreed this was the best ratio and way to do it, so...I dunno...it's what I used. There are many variations and alterations.
2 oz. light rum (I used Bacardi Superior Light)
1 oz. Simple Syrup (or 2 tsp. granulated sugar)
3/4 Fresh lime (or 1 oz. lime juice / 2 tablespoons)
6-8 fresh mint leaves
You start by taking 6 or 8 mint leaves and dropping them into a shaker or glass. Cut up a lime into 3 or 4 wedges and put it in the glass. Then add your simple syrup or granulated sugar. Start to muddle the ingredients in a glass (but don't chop the mint leaves or get them into a paste) mixing everything together and making sure to release the juice of the limes. Add in your rum, and a TON of ice or crushed ice. Shake or stir everything up and garnish, that's it!

That's almost the same as a Caipiriña (a Caribbean drink) except instead of mint leaves, more limes.
Recipe? Just put this stuff (http://www.bernheimwheatwhiskey.com/mainsite.html) in a glass. Serve.
Holy crud it's great. Went to the Liquor Barn yesterday just to get some beer, and reps from all the local distilleries were there for a free Bourbon/Whiskey tasting and good lawd...you just gotta try it.

I make cocktails for a living and have 50 memorised as part of my job, so I have no idea where to start.....
How about with my new favourite, the Toffee Apple?
1oz Butterscotch Schnapps
1oz Goldschlager
2oz Apple Juice
Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass :)
I'll try and post a new cocktail every day, remind me if I dont!
After everyone went home, except for my "guests", we would crank the tunes, play pool, and this was my favorite after hours drink when I was a bartender:
In a shaker mix equal parts (I would do 2 shots of each)
"Surfer On Acid"
Myers Dark Rum
Jagr
pineapple juice
ice
*shake*
Cheers!

You're such a purist.
All the recipes sound wonderful and are reminiscent of things I used to drink. These days I'm more inclined to stick to straight bourbon or vodka and some juice - unless I'm sitting on a beach somewhere - then I'll be a bit more exotic.
I'll take a Pilsner Urquell for my beer - it's always in my fridge, along with Budweiser for the guys.

I love coffee and I love whiskey. But, my mom brought over a bottle of brandy which I had never tried before. Now, brandy is made from grapes right? so how does it end up tasting like whiskey? I find it very smooth with a slow burn. So, I added the brandy to my coffee with a spoonful of sugar and topped it off with whipped cream. Oh. My. God.

I just saw a new receipe yesterday for a watermelon mojito. I enjoy mojitos and the watermelon made it look pretty. I'm going to cheat though. This is my receipe:
1 oz mojito vodka
2oz watermelo puree with simple sugar
1tsp lime juice
ice
Shaken not stirred.
Top off with a few muddled mint leaves.
I'll let you all know how it tastes.

This new receipe has been made out of necessity. We bought too many cucumbers plants and now they are growing so well, we have a lot. So I invented a smoothie that used a cucumber puree. I partially peal and I remove all the seeds of one cold cucumber. I place chopped up cucumber into the blender with some blueberries, about a 1/4 cup cold water with 1 small teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of lime juice. I add 1/2 banana for creaminess. Add five or six pitted sweet bing cherries. I blend this mix for about 1 minute. It is delicious. And my cucumber pile is dwindling because of it.

I was taling about this drink all summer and I'm surprised that I didn't write it here.
1/2 glass beer + 1/2 glass lemonade = a surprisingly tastey concoction.
