I'm back to kick all your butts again.

To join, you need a yahoo account and go here: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/pickem/register/joingroup

Go to join private group on the right. The group ID # is 2473 and the password is lost815.

It's easy to play. Just make your picks on a weekly basis. You have 5 minutes before each game to make the pick. Season starts September 4.

Awesome. I'm all signed up and ready to go. I'll send an email to Hodge and try to talk him into playing along.

Thanks Spidey!

Cool. For some reason, Yahoo gave me a second place trophy for last year's pickems on my sports profile. I know I came in first. Damn Yahoo bastards! I didn't choke like the Patriots.

And Texans over Steelers is a sure pick in week 1. :)

Mike Tomlin has had his year of grace since succeding Bill Cowher and history has shown that when the guy following a great coach attempts to follow that coach's system the second year is generally the make or break as to whether he's going to do so successfully. I guess about 90% of the time the answer is "FAIL".

The Steelers have been hampered by injuries the last 2 seasons. Give 'em a healthy year & let's see what happens.

You were first. I have the standings saved. I was posting them....but it also copied links to the players profile for the pickem...so I deleted it. You had 175 points....2nd was LIW with 169 and third was me with 168....Hodge was behind me by one point.

Hey Brian, can I get your opinion on Jim Mora Jr? The reason I ask is that he seems the likely successor after Holmgren steps down at the end of this season.

Brian
08-23-08, 08:45 PM
I'm sure he's a nice guy in person, but I never really cared for him much as a head coach. I haven't liked any of the coaches in Atlanta since Dan Reeves left (granted there have only been a couple). I still think that the Falcons playoff run in Moya's first year was because of the team that Reeves had built. Mora had about a .500 season the next year and a losing season the year after that. Of course, having a quarterback that everyone thought walked on water didn't help much. Maybe he'll do better in the Northwest since that seems to be where he wanted to be anyway (I don't buy that he was joking when he made those comments that got him fired by the Falcons). I wish him luck because off the field he does seem like a nice guy.

ETA - The one guy who went to Seattle from Atlanta that I really liked and miss is Patrick Kerney. The guy is like a machine and I loved watching him play. I hated to see him go.

I know this is the first week's picks, but there's a couple games that can go either way.

Arizona Cardinals vs San Francisco 49ers

Buffalo Bills vs Seattle Seahawks (the Seagulls are rated the underdog)

Green Bay Packers vs Minnesota Vikings

What does everybody think? :confused:

Oh! Don't forget Thursdays game. That pick has to be in five (5) minutes before the start.

I like the Cardinals as well with Warner starting instead of Leinart.

Hasselbeck is just coming back from back problems incurred in their first preseason game. But, Trent Edwards has been out with an injury too. Man, this is a dilemma! Where's the Cat when you need him? :nanabobo:

I'm going with the Vikings over the Packers. I'm looking forward to the Lambeau crowd lynching Thompson in efigy. :D

ETA: Oh! And if Favre wins his first with the Jets, he can run for Mayor of New York.

Matt tweeked his back a bit in the first preseason game, against Minnesota. Nothing major. He hasn't gotten any game reps since then because, basically, he doesn't need any. It really doesn't make any sense to run him out there and risk injury when he already knows the "gravy" parts of the playbook which are run through in preseason games. And besides, Holmgren wanted to take a good look at Charlie Frye, give him lots of work.

So don't make to much of the "just coming back from back problems" bit. That's spin to justify the line favoring the Bills.

ETA: Oh! And if Favre wins his first with the Jets, he can run for Mayor of New York.

Let me be the first to say...

"I'm announcing my candidacy for Mayor of New Y....no, wait. Yes, ...my candidacy for Mayor of New York! Meh. No, I don't want to be mayor. Do you want me to be mayor? Do you think I'd be a good mayor? Back-to-back-to-back re-election good, or just Bloomberg good? Nevermind then. Ah, F-it! I'M ANNOUNCING MY CANDIDACY FOR MAYOR OF BOSTON!!!!!!!!!"

Go Packers!
Go Favre!

The second week of the season is going to be tough. Will some teams show their true colors? Or, are some of the defeated teams from week one going to recover?

Jets vs Patriots
Bills vs Jaguars
Colts vs Vikings

Anyway, you never know on week 1. It's anybody's guess. Just like I blew the Carolina/Chargers game. Last minute game changer and it's a valuable lesson to the Chargers to NOT let them keep gaining yards near the red zone.

The real test of the teams comes this week, IMO. I don't think Matt Ryan will be able to do magic, just like I don't think Philly will over come Dallas.

So, failing to cover the spread against the Iggles on MNF, in fact, having all of America watch the Cowbabies have to struggle to avoid getting upset on MNF again... I can't see what you are gloating about, but hey, a win is a win.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~
To bolster the reciever corps, remember how I said I wouldn't complain if the Hawks traded for Ocho Cinco? They did the next craziest thing. They re-signed Koren Robinson. Great wide-out if he can A) catch the ball, and B) stay clean. If he can manage to do these things they might actually keep him when Dieon Branch and Bobby Engram return.
What's the spread got to do with it? Each team brings 45 players to a game. That's each team. Each team is allowed 11 players on offense, defense and special teams. In other words, no handicap! Now, if you're saying the 'Boys are a better team. You're right! I think we have to agree, the Dallas Cowboys are the best team in the NFL. As T.O. would say, "Don't hate on me!" :nanabobo:
BTW--If I'm not mistaken, the NFC-East plays the NFC-West this season. Which means, the Seagulls will play the Cowboys at Texas Stadium. Oh yeah, Nov. 27, '08. That's Thanksgiving! I wonder what Seahawk tastes like. :nanabobo:
Maybe you'd like to make a side wager? Something along the lines of what Spidey and I did last year. Make it light on yourself! :nanabobo:
TBC, you did remind me of something I read Tuesday morning:
Cowboys relish victory that drew record TV ratings
IRVING, Texas -- Jerry Jones likes to brag about the Dallas Cowboys being the top drawing card in the entire entertainment world. His premise: The Cowboys draw the highest ratings among NFL teams and the NFL is the highest-rated programming on television.
Games like Monday night sure help his claim.
Dallas' 41-37 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles was filled with drama. The lead changed seven times, the momentum swaying on good plays and goofy ones, with big-name players from both teams at both ends of the spectrum.
Mix in the backdrop of a rivalry and division supremacy, a few injuries, some questionable officiating calls, several big milestones and the historic nugget of this being the final Monday night game at Texas Stadium, and it's no wonder the Cowboys were ratings gold yet again -- a whopping 12.95 million homes and 18.6 million viewers, the largest audience ever for a program on cable television. It's the second time in three years Dallas has set that mark... (http://www.nfl.com/news/story;jsessionid=52461D94078DED5676878CF3E4DA9A4F? id=09000d5d80adfe69&template=with-video&confirm=true)
Yep, this is the same Texan team that will make the playoffs. I did state before the season started that they might start 1-3 but then if you look at the rest of the schedule, I can see a few winning streaks. Yes, thanks to the unscheduled bye week, they are not 1-3. (I also blame the hurricane on the Astros not making the playoffs. Bud Selig rescheduling Houston home games in Milwaukee was a dumb ass move.)
Yeah, Sage Rosenfels is a dumb ass. For three and a half quarters, I thought there was going to be a QB controversy after the game. He went from hero to zero just like that. The impossible happened. Fumble returned for a TD, fumble that leads to a TD, interception to end the game. This was also the coach's fault. With a 17 point lead and 5 minutes left, all he had to do was tell Sage to hand the ball to the running backs. Not go for passing plays that results in making the QB scramble that lead to fumbles and incomplete passes that stops the clock. I had flashbacks of Oilers vs Bills. Matt Schaub should be back from his viral infection next week. Bring on the hot Dolphins! I smell a four game winning streak to take us to .500.
Here comes another tough week of pick'ems. Other than the Cowboys, there's really no standout team this season. I've singled out five (5) games that could go either way. Home team = Bold
Jets vs Bengals - The Bengals are the best 0-5 team in the League.
Texans vs Dolphins - Can Houston stop that single-wing?
Broncos vs Jaguars - The Broncos are one of the worst run-defense teams in the League. Jacksonville loves to run the ball.
Seahawks vs Packers - The "Seagulls" are a bad team. Green Bay started off 2-0, but have lost the last three games. This could be like watching paint dry.
Chargers vs Patriots - How do the Chargers loose to Miami? I know Tater, but it's still baffling to me.
*raises hand*
I can't believe the Falcons pulled that game off. Matt Ryan impresses me more every time I see him play.
1) They never should have let Da Bores be in a position to take the lead. Fault the holder, not the kicker because you could plainly see that the laces were pointed far to the left, like between ten and eleven o'clock if you were looking down at it. That is why Elam missed the FG try with two and a half minutes left in the game which would have given the Falcs a 9 point lead.
2) The devastating D, the Monsters of the Midway Mk III that put Da Bores into Super Bowl XLI is a thing of the past. Brian Urlacher is Brian Errr..lacking. They are still good, but they are nothing noteworthy.
3) And Matt Ryan, what a great kid!
Maybe I should have mentioned that the much maligned Seahawks defense, whom the Seahawks beaten and battered offense couldn't give enough time off the field for more than a gulp of fresh air at a time, still manage to completely shut down Garcia AT Raymond James Stadium in the second half the previous Sunday. It would have given you a bit more confidence in the 'Boys.
I turned on the tube with the Bucs possessing the ball inside the 'Boys 30, on that final drive of thiers and said to myself "I hope Hodge took my advice". I knew right there that the 'Boys were going to win. No doubt whatever. I had just seen the level that Jeff Garcia's talent has faded to the previous week and I knew that it was utterly beyond his ability to produce a touchdown in that situation against that team. Just like Mr Spock's comment about dropping a hammer and not needing to see it fall to know that it has done so.
Well, believe it or not I almost changed that pick just before game time. I looked at their records (both were 5-5 at that point) and their latest streaks (both had 1 game winning streaks at that point) and figured it was literally a coin toss as to who'd win. The final deciding factor was home field advantage so I went with the Saints. :)
Yeah, it will elimanate the Saints and the other 3 will make it with the Cowboys being left out. Cowboys have four tough games left. They may not win again.
Thanks to Houston, it's the first time that a last minute pre-game pick change has helped me. Good job Texans.
The Titans had a chance to win it in the end with a 49 yard field goal but this is one instance where Hurricane Ike helped us out. They could not close the roof because it had hurricane damage. It had been raining. First pro football game in Houston with rain since the 60s. It was also windy so they decided not to go for the field goal because of the conditions. So instead, they went for it on fourth down. D'oh!
And the Texans finally drafted their Reggie Bush when they drafted Steve Slaton. Slaton is the only running back to rush for at least 100 yards against the Titans this year and he did it twice.
Nice to play the spoilers but next year Matt Scaub needs to avoid being cheap shot and injured. Damn Jared Allen.
Now Pittsburgh needs to beat the Titans next week.
Thanks to Houston, it's the first time that a last minute pre-game pick change has helped me. Good job Texans.Are you serious Brian? :confused: This was one of those picks I made three weeks ago, and nothing was going to make me change it. Although, I should've taken into consideration were the Titans, who had resolved a division win and a bye in the first round, going to show up. Or, was it going to be a reasonable facsimile. It was the latter. :nanabobo:
The Dallas Cowboys have really showed off their defensive prowess over the last couple of weeks. Man, they just overpowered the Giants. Eight sacks, three by the League sack leader DeMarcus Ware. This puts him just three-and-a-half sacks behind current record-holder Michael Strahan for the single-season record.
The beginning of the week, had me picking the Giants. I just didn't think the 'Boys could come back after the loss to the Steelers. Glad I made the change, and went with my heart. :heartpump
It doesn't get any easier Saturday, when the Ravens come to town. Although, I picked the Steelers in that game, I think the Ravens were robbed. The call on the field was the right call to make. Plus, there wasn't anything seen on the replay that offered irrefutable proof otherwise.
Robbed?! I don't think so.
Besides Pitt had 2 bad calls/non calls go against them in this game before that.
Most likely Pitt ties game with a shot to win in OT er a QB sneak for the win.
This video (http://msn.foxsports.com/video/NFL) explains it better.I understand the rule and the Ref is completely right. The receiver must have both feet in the field of play. The ball must also break the plane of the end zone. Now, the two bozos in the video have no idea what they're talking about. Their explanation, that the ball is an extension of the receiver is totally wrong.
I stand by my original explanation. There wasn't a video replay shown that IMO changed the call on the field. And, remember that call was, 4th down at the half-yard line. :nanabobo:
Lost amid the hoopla of the Ravens picking off Pennington 4 times was Flacco going, IIRC, 9 for 23. That's looking pretty rookie if you ask me. About the only difference between the two performances is that none of Flacco's errant passes wound up in Dolphin hands.
