ok so after hunting around apparently the answer to 73 is whether/or...however this is incorrect because you can form a sentence with whether with out using or.

My concern lies not with whether the man went to the store, but with what he bought.

You many already have these corrected by now, but for what it's worth I think that 22 is "arrange in groups for analysis of results", 46 is "Gotland", 53 is "forward vision", and 87 is gall bladder. According to Dark's site http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dhs57rvn_40cdhst8st 5 is "60", 7 is "6", 18 is "EKG" (I'm quite sure that's right), and I think 102 should be E.V. Kondakova, which isn't exactly a choice... could they have made a spelling mistake?

Now I'm wishing I hadn't read all the answers before taking the test, or that I had at least chosen to get some wrong in order to see if that might get me into a particular classification (i.e. only answer the biology/science questions right to see if that might cause them to give me a zoology job or something similar).

Stratify (http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/stratify) - layers, like onions(or parfaits)
in statistical terms the division of a population into subpopulations on the basis of specified criteria such as age, breed, parity.

I know on Dark's site they have "disease" down as the answer regarding the suffix lysis, but I really don't think that is it. In medical terms lysis means the gradual subsiding of the symptoms of an acute disease. So, I think losing is the best answer. Also, you apply direct pressure first to a profusely bleeding wound.

I think you have genic right. The adjective genic means of or relating to or produced by or being a gene, but the suffix genic refers to producing or generating. Sadly, I incorrectly selected my answer as genetic.

What is magma, that (erupts?) from a volcano?
lava
waterspout

Molten Rock.

also, has anyone considered that the A to last Q is answered from a predictable pattern the previous 9 RIGHT answers form?

Wow, I know I got that question - maybe before I started taking notes, thanks!!

I considered that there might be a pattern, but I kept forgetting to keep track.

I was also thinking about the different categories and whether or not we were put into groups because of the questions we answered correctly, and how fast we answered individual questions.

What groups do we have?
Grammar
Medical
Geography
Animal Biology (there's a better for this, but it escapes me)
Art
World Leaders
History

I hadn't thought of using a pattern of the previous 9 answers... just thought the answer to 10 was determined using the "cheat" - seems everyone gets the same answer, though.

I think lava and magma are both names for molten rock, lava being the name for magma that has been expelled from a volcano.

I'm still not convinced the average lifespan of an ant isn't 90 days. That seems to be the answer I most commonly come up with, although I can't see how you can pin this number down for ALL ants as the lifespan of ants varies greatly between species and also, of course, between castes within a species (queen's typically living much longer - often many years - and workers less than 6 months).

RoseArienh
08-28-08, 03:31 AM
The lifespan of an ant question was very hard to research. So are all the ones still in red, because I got so many ambiguous answers. With all the different great minds on this forum, we'll get them all answered pretty quick, I'm sure.

Not to double post or anything, but I have updated the first post. We now have 141 questions, and I've taken the test several times without getting any new questions.

At that point, I browsed the web to see how others were doing, and I didn't find anyone with more than 141 questions.

I did find (I think at Doc Artz's) some disagreement with some of the answers here. They are:

What means having two eyes facing forward? - we have binocular, which I believe is correct, through research. I could find no "airy vision," monocular vision does not fit, and forward vision seems to be more philosophic than eyesight related. However, I did find binocular vision.

Which country coveres the largest total area? - we have Syria. I researched all four in two different places - Wikipedia and Information Please. I looked at the areas for each country, and added the US Virgin Islands and British Islands for one total.
Syria - 71,498 sq. mi.
Lesotho - 11,717 sq. mi.
Virgin Islands - 136 US + 59 Brit = 195 sq. mi.
Nepal - 52,819 sq. mi.

In medical terms, what does the suffix "-lysis" mean? - we have losing. I found the answer "disease" elsewhere. However, the medical suffix for disease is "pathy" and the suffix "lysis" does mean to lose, so I think we're correct.

What is magma? - We have rock. Again, two sources, which state that magma is made up of a mixture of solid and liquid rock and gases. When it emerges from the volcano, it is called lava. I still think rock is correct.

And I'm still not happy with the ant question, so I have left that research for last. Again.

hold on a sec....all these sites say 1/2 a year = 180 days

After reading some more I found that minor workers can live from 60-90 and major workers up to 180. Queens live even longer....so which one is it?

XxMayhemxX
08-28-08, 08:40 PM
-pathy is the medical suffix for disease...
so -lysis must be the second option on its question

Jezebel
08-29-08, 05:06 AM
If the question was "what is magma", the answer would be molten rock (so perhaps rock would work), however it is "what is magma that erupts from a volcano" so the answer must be lava. That's the exact definition of lava.

When two eyes facing forwards focus on the same object to produce one image then that would indeed be binocular vision. Are there any instances in nature where an animal with two eyes that face forwards does not have binocular vision? Not sure... some animals can move their eyes so they face out to the sides or to the front (like chameleons or starlings) but when they face forwards they alway use binocular vision I believe. So, perhaps the correct answer is binocular.

Those sites and most others list the maximum life span of worker ants as 180 days... so the average would undoubtedly be much less, which makes me think the correct answer to "what is the average life span of an ant" is 60 days. (Queens do live much longer but there is only one per colony so they are in the minority - i'd use the life span of workers to determine the average).

When they ask about the country covering the largest area they don't mention land area specifically - so i wonder if the water needs to be factored in as well (lakes, rivers, etc, as well as any ocean within the country's borders). This could make a difference.

What is magma? - We have rock. Again, two sources, which state that magma is made up of a mixture of solid and liquid rock and gases. When it emerges from the volcano, it is called lava. I still think rock is correct.

Here is the definition from Wikipedia: Lava is molten rock expelled by a volcano during an eruption. When first expelled from a volcanic vent, it is a liquid at temperatures from 700 °C to 1,200 °C (1,300 °F to 2,200 °F). Although lava is quite viscous, with about 100,000 times the viscosity of water, it can flow great distances before cooling and solidifying, because of its thixotropic and shear thinning properties.[1][2]

A lava flow is a (moving) outpouring of lava, which is created during a non-explosive effusive eruption. When it has stopped moving, lava solidifies to form igneous rock. The term lava flow is commonly shortened to lava. Explosive eruptions produce a mixture of volcanic ash and other fragments called tephra, rather than lava flows. The word 'lava' comes from Italian, and is probably derived from the Latin word labes which means a fall or slide.[3][4] The first use in connection with extruded magma (molten rock below the earth's surface) was apparently in a short account written by Francesco Serao on the eruption of Vesuvius between May 14 and June 4, 1737.[5] Serao described "a flow of fiery lava" as an analogy to the flow of water and mud down the flanks of the volcano following heavy rain.

I agree with Jezebel that "lava" is a better answer. Both "rock" and "lava" are potential answers, but "lava" is more specific: it is specifically "extruded magma". "Rock" is more generic: sedimentary rock, for instance, is not formed from magma at all.

If the question was "what is magma", the answer would be molten rock (so perhaps rock would work), however it is "what is magma that erupts from a volcano" so the answer must be lava. That's the exact definition of lava.

Jezebel and manutius, I have to agree with your reasoning and applaud your research. I've changed the question/answer in the first post.

Rosey Wosey are you planning on doing a thread like this for test 4 questions??
