Chrome is the new browser created by Google labs.

It is definitely a browser for minimalists but it still contains all of the features that Firefox has (minus add-ons) and presents it in a slick and Googly UI.

I've only been using it for brief time but I must say I am impressed. What do you think?

I dunno, but they really need to get on making sure they have working videos if they plan on people wanting to use it. Every one on the feature page isn't available.

It was just released an hour ago.

then there's also the ex-google employees site: Cuil(cool) (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/28/technology/28cool.html)

Wow, minimalist indeed. :)

I'll stick with what I have, I don't really have problems with it

I heart my Firefox and the new addition. This new Google one is interesting, I am gonna test it some more for a final decision.

It has a tiny issue with my online work project manager, but otherwise it is shiny.

"...killing Internet Explorer isn't really Chrome's goal. No, killing Microsoft Office is Chrome's goal."

Source (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/killing Internet Explorer isn't really Chrome's goal. No, killing Microsoft Office is Chrome's goal.)

There is some very forward thinking behind Chrome. Since It's open source, it's likely that it will be ported to MacOS and Linux shortly.

I'm going to move this to General Technical Support. I know that's not why the thread was started, but I think that's a good home for it.

Thanks. I was hoping it would get moved to a more appropriate forum. Cheers.

Here's the associated "comic book" (http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/).

I added the thread to Featured Threads, so if you add an image to the first post, it will catch eyes on the main page. You can add an image as large as 320w x 200h if you like.

Lol. I found that humorous as well. Also, I actually think that the comic was a (graphic) novel way to explain its features.

John
09-02-08, 10:24 PM
The fact that it's built with WebKit (Apple/KDE) is encouraging. I've been using it off and on since shortly after I first posted in this thread, and while I've encountered a couple minor glitches and incompatibilities, I have to say that it's certainly faster.

Mattie

I downloaded, experimented. It's REALLY good for an alpha/beta.

If they have extension capability in the future I'd definitely consider switching from Firefox. The page rendering is very speedy and perfect. But I can't live without mouse gestures. I will never go back to the days of navigating all the way up to a back/forward button or not being able to open a new tab with a mouse gesture.

Lol. I found that humorous as well. Also, I actually think that the comic was a (graphic) novel way to explain its features.:drum: Hardy-har.

Seriously though, I like the auto-search feature. The separate tabs is good, 'cept we need to be able to override it one in awhile, I need the tabs to recognize one another for my work program. Also, Mac or Linux friendliness will be a must eventually. Aesthetically, color schemes... etc. Seems to run faster thatn my Firefox too.

Vitriol
09-02-08, 10:26 PM
It definitely loads pages faster but I have had some trouble with embedded videos stalling. That's something that I'm sure will be corrected in the first patch if its not just my system.

Edit: It also has its own task manager. Very cool.

John
09-02-08, 11:09 PM
It's multithreaded, so it will handle tabs and things like freaky java much better.

I'm not having any trouble with YouTube. I am getting irritated at some missing keystrokes that I'm used to having available.

Vitriol
09-02-08, 11:10 PM
I'm loving the multithreaded tabs. My system is thanking me.

Mattie
09-02-08, 11:13 PM
I don't get it. What's the difference with Chrome's tabs versus any other browser's tabs?

John
09-02-08, 11:14 PM
Other browsers use a single system process to handle the browser. Chrome uses (at least one) process per tab.

Mattie
09-02-08, 11:22 PM
Ooooh, ok, yeah. I see chrome.exe a bunch of times in my task manager instead of just once like firefox.exe if I'm running FF. So this means if one tab errors the rest would stay active?

Does that mean Chrome would take up more system resources though? Assuming each tab has to keep the same functionality as a browser window, isn't it like loading all of the browser's features over and over again?

I can have anywhere from 10-15 tabs open in FF with several extensions running and not see it go much past 80-100 MB's of memory. I wonder what would happen if I test it on this version of Chrome...

Vitriol
09-02-08, 11:26 PM
I think its worth it to use a little more memory to stop browser crashes or java related freeze ups. Also, FF has a lot of memory leaks due to add-ons and extensions. Hopefully Chrome will be able to use the above mentioned method to stop this.

John
09-02-08, 11:43 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if Chrome runs with less memory requirements overall. It's designed to be lightweight.

I did find a rather annoying bug. Under 64 bit XP, the whole app crashes when I try to open the "options" dialog.

Vitriol
09-02-08, 11:46 PM
That would be annoying. I like that Chrome doesn't integrate so much into my system..also running Firefox and then Chrome, it definitely does use less resources. I opened 8 tabs in Chrome and 8 in FF seperately...Chrome used 10,000k less resources but that may be due to add-on bloat in FF.

I love it already. There are SO many tiny little features that right now have me enjoying this browser more than IE and FF combined. This just may be my new favorite. I haven't been to many sites to check compatibility or page display capability, but so far Chrome is REALLY impressing me.

One feature I just noticed, that I don't think I've ever seen before, is type box re-sizing on the fly. For example, I just resized the box I was typing this post in by clicking on the little dots in the lower right hand corner. Awesome feature.

ETA: It's also loading pages extremely fast. I'm seriously impressed.

Vitriol
09-03-08, 06:11 PM
Yeah, the post box resizing thing is neat. Thanks for pointing that out.

Installed it this morning. It's not faster than my Firefox. Plus it has that google updater, that creates his own task in the task manager. With all that data hoarding stuff we heard about google these days I'm not sure I'm trusting that thing. Plus it still has some serious security flaws.

I am loving it. I read some speed test results (also saw graphs) that show Chrome completely smashes all the javascript records held by all the major browsers. IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc. It's no contest. It's the fastest in load up and exit times too.

I have to say I used it nearly ALL day today. If they allow extension support sometime in the future I would definitely switch. I'll be using it on and off to continue testing though.

John
09-04-08, 07:28 AM
I used it most of yesterday and much of today, but I ran into too many issues while running on XP 64 bit (or my busted up version of it - time to reinstall or kill it permanently), so I dropped out. I like it. It's certainly faster, but there are some things that I would have to get used to.

I'm looking forward to a Linux release, because it's a great browser to use on a very old system like a cheap Pentium 3 laptop under a lightweight Linux distro. With that small footprint, it would make fantastic use of an old system like that. I've set them up and they run great, but the browser is always a bit of an issue, since Firefox and its clones are a little heavy, and the other browser options suck.

I personally haven't had a chance to try Chrome out, yet. The tidbit of firsthand experience I do have, though, is that the business I work at won't allow our employees to use it, at all. Mostly because of this neat little bit in the License Agreement:

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights that you already hold in Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content, you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services. This licence is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this licence includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organisations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those Services.

11.4 You confirm and warrant to Google that you have all the rights, power and authority necessary to grant the above licence.

Kinda creepy. :(

ETA: LOL, I guess, as of today, they completely changed their License Agreement to get rid of all of that. Yay for backpedaling!! :D
