View Full Version : Computer screen goes yellow

My computer screen occasionally (okay more often than not nowadays) goes yellow. I can still see everything, but the colors are off and it's irritating as all get out.
Occasionally it flickers, sometimes it goes back to normal without warning, and sometimes if I smack the top of the computer (which is admittedly fun) it clears up - but not often.
My question: is this a video card issue or a monitor issue? Any ideas?
Thnx in advance for any and all help
That's usually a monitor issue, though it can occasionally be a cable issue. Smacking the monitor will have no effect on the video card. Is it a CRT or LCD monitor?

This takes me back to the good old days when you had to 'Degauss' (demagnetize) your monitor by pushing a button, which is probably why TPTP asked if it's a CRT. If it is, look for a button that says that.

Nope. CRT monitors are prone to different failures than LCD monitors. Degausing will clear up some color issues, but not electrical failure in a cable or interconnect. My guess is that it's a CRT and that either there is an external cable issue or an internal interconnect issue.

It is a CRT - Degaussing - that's usally the tuning fork icon thingy, right? I used to try that a lot, but while it clears the colors for a split second, it never successfully solves the issue.

The unit will have a catastrophic failure in a week.
just guessing.
They can run with those issues for years.

It's been this way for a while, but recently it seems to be spending more time yellow than regular (or I'm just using the computer more ).
Iggy the cord is built-in to the back of the monitor.
Thanks for your help guys. It sounds like I need to use this as an excuse to get a shiny flatscreen monitor. Problem is, when will I be able to afford it....

My old CRT monitor used to do this exact thing. Everything would go extra-yellow. Hitting the top of the monitor would bring the blue colors back. I figure it was an issue with the bluetone-generating-gizmojigabob (technical term) inside the monitor.
I got a 19" widescreen LCD and couldn't have been happier about that purchase. I got it for $199 at the time, but the prices have since dropped way below that. I recommend Hanns-G, they seem to get great reviews and the prices are really good. Check out newegg, I always buy from them: http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-3137620-10445161 (use that link if you buy anything from newegg - that's the "support the forum" link to it)
Type "HW-191DPB" into the search box. $150 shipped for a high quality 19" widescreen. Can't beat that.

That's pretty affordable! (Okay, in a paycheck or two...)
But now I kinda want to take it into the store just so I can ask them to check the bluetone-generating-gizmojigabob :D

That's pretty affordable! (Okay, in a paycheck or two...)Yeah, affordable is always a relative term - LCD screen prices have dropped a whole lot in the past 5 years. And the visual quality on LCDs just blows CRTs away, especially if it's an older CRT. The only (minor) drawback of LCDs is that you really only get the full quality of the screen if you use the monitor's native resolution, which in the case of 19" widescreens is 1440x900. That's not usually a problem unless you play games on your PC, in which case some older games don't support widescreen or higher resolutions like that, so you end up with a potentially jaggy looking image at 1024x768 or something like that.
$150 isn't necessarily a casual drop in the bucket, but relatively speaking in the computer monitor world, that's a great deal. I remember when I had my first 486 computer (a whopping 66mhz), I bought a 15" CRT for $400. Yikes. The thing was huge (depth-wise) and it weighed about 300 lbs.
But now I kinda want to take it into the store just so I can ask them to check the bluetone-generating-gizmojigabob :DBe sure to video tape their response.
