Read this, and see if you don't wonder as well whether the producers had a heads up on this discovery:

btw: in "that" part of the world...well...a bit north: mainland Malaysia: there were communist terrorists (CTs..and what they called themselves) hiding in the jungles until the last 12 to 15 years. They never knew WW II was over.

I think your history is off here about WWII and communist terrorist. There is an anecdotal account of a Jappanese soldier emerging from the jungles on some island and not knowing that WWII was over, the account comes from the 50s I believe, and there was an eppie of Gilligan's Island where they run into a Japanese mini-submariner who doesn't know that the war is over. But most importantly the Japanese are not the same thing as communist terrorist.
Also, a lot of people in the scientific community had access to the information on the little folks before it was made public this week. It's not like they just came out of the jungle and called CNN with info on their find. So it's possible that JJ or other LOST staff knows a scientist or two who had heard or seen preliminary accounts of the find. Not that we have any evidence linking the show's plot to the scientific find, but some little stone age dudes might be neat.

I was thinking that "some little stone age dudes," hunting in large groups, might have mastered the art of jungle camouflage, perhaps???

One of the reports about the new find on NPR said that locals on the island have legends of little people (most cultures have similar tales). But the report said that the stories of our new distant evolutionary relations come from only two generations ago, which means that some of the group may still be extant. Next year a new expedition will be exploring other areas of Flores Island. It'd sure be sweet if they found some living specimens. Of course this is totally unrelated to Lost, and I'm leaning toward some sort of mechanical explanation for the creature that took the pilot. Unless of course that the creature has learned some sort of mechanical mimicry, which would be a nice touch.

doubt this relates to lost but it's very very cool news regardless. you'd have to think it was possible more of these little guys are out there, don't see why they would have completely stayed on the one island. I mean if the fossil record dates back to 90,000 years ago i'm kinda hopeful at some stage a group left the island and maybe inhabited some of the other ones in the area.
Finding a new living species of humanoids would be amazing.

I lived there....there were road blocks when you left any major city...and it was because of the band of CTs. THEY WERE NOT Japanese. THey were Chinese-Malays. I can give you the names of a couple of books written before they actually came out of the jungle. By the way...as stated before....they referred to themselves as CTs...not anyone else. And by the way, they came into Kuala Lumpur up until about the 60's and started skirmishes.
Be open to knowledge...it comes from strange places Mike!

Grand knights of valour
Twenty-eight men have thus far been conferred the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa, the country’s highest award for bravery. Who are they?
PC Velu Rajavelu
>>>>>>>
PC Abu Bakar Ngah Wahab
Abu Bakar was a police constable who was part of a Police Field Force operation to clean out a communist stronghold in Betong, southern Thailand, on Aug 15, 1968. He put up a brave fight with the terrorists and was killed in battle. He was conferred the award posthumously on Aug 31, 1969.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Lans Kpl Saimon Tarikat
Saimon was a commando with the Special Combat Intelligence Regiment. On Jan 25, 1983, he was part of an operation in Titi in Jelebu district, Negri Sembilan. Just before midnight, his group discovered a band of communist terrorists. Saimon and one of his men opened fire at two terrorists, killing one of them. Saimon tried to go after another terrorist but was shot by her comrade. He was awarded the SP posthumously on June 1, 1983.

Sure but nothing in that says that they never thought WWII was over. Nor did it say how long they were in the jungle. I do not dispute that commies hide in jungles. Only that commies hiding in jungles since the end of WWII in 1945 seem kind of impossible for a number of reasons. If you look at the rise of communist insurgencies, most date from after WWII when the cold war was begining to get underway, with some obvious exceptions in China and Russia. So I'll not be rolling on any floors, at least not until later this evening...

War Against Terrorism: Malaysia's Experience in Defeating Terrorism
Authors: Hasny Bin Md Salleh; ARMY WAR COLL CARLISLE BARRACKS PA
Abstract: The September 11 2001 attack has caused a lot of worries world wide of what transnational terrorism is capable of. There grew great emotions against terrorism rather than uncovering the root causes of terrorism. This resulted in countries (believed to be sponsoring transnational terrorism) being attacked even at the lost of lives of the people both combatants and civilians alike. The paper aims at examining the Malaysian success in defeating communist terrorists from 1948 until 1960 (1st Emergency) and 1960-1989 (2nd Emergency) their surrender and the demise of communist ideology in the country. It also looks into the definition of terrorism that have always remained ambiguous strategy of terrorism its root causes Malaysia's experience in defeating the communist terrorists that incorporated the dimensions of national power and how Malaysia copes with the present day terrorism. It is obvious that Malaysia lacks the state of the art technologies existed in many developed countries but the employment of Human Intelligence has successfully contributed to defeating the terrorists in the country.

Okay Mike: I see what you are arguing with. The fact they stayed in the jungle all that time was the belief they were going to be victorious...as they had been during the occupation of the Japanese. I have to admit, when I was there, it was stated they knew the war was over...and were awaiting the right time for the enemy to return to Malaysia...and they would rule the area.
Now then: when the surrender was made, the headlines stated...been there since WW II...and that twas believed they didn't know the war was over. By that time, I was back in the states.
The fact the Malaysians dealt with these terrorists for decades makes them believe they have a corner on the market for how to deal with terrorists. Debatable since many of them are embedded there now as well.

Yeah from what I know Malaysia is a hot bed for all sort of factions from communist to Islamic fundamentalist.
I thought there might have been some confusion about Japanese forces hiding in the jungles since WWII, being the same thing as "communist terrorist," and knew from anecdotal stories from Guam and other So. Pac. locales that some Japanese soldiers surrendered after the cessation of hostilities. Although there was a Japanese Red Faction sort of group that operated on Guam and some other islands for a while, as recently as the 80s if my memory is correct. They were kind of like the Shining Path in Peru or similar insurgent groups elsewhere.
If I have my druthers the show will have all sorts of people stranded on the island, including some dwarf human-relations to tie the thread back together. Hopefully, more will have fared better than Adam and Eve.

I cant see the story:-( it says link not found
Someone said something about little people/hobbits? & I swear to god this is true: the other night my dad was flipping the channels around & we heard the word "Hobbit" so he stopped it there for me, assuming it was LOTR related... It wasnt...dun Dun DUN it was a science show, they had skeletons & everything, trying to fit the hobbit into the history of man. Saying Hobbits were part of man's evolution. I then proceeded to freak out & my dad began to laugh at me. it was on channel 100 on cox digital cable...I dunno what it was, but it was a little...weird...
