View Full Version : Favorite Apps for iPhone
What apps do you have?
Photobucket for iPhone...it's free and allows you to take a pic or choose one from your files and upload to your Photobucket account. Works quickly and seems to be without bugs so far.
RulerPhoto...you place a credit card in the shot, snap a pic, line up the card with the template on the screen and then can measure height or width of anything in the photo. I can use this on jobs to later take measurements to estimate wallpaper, etc. I would say it has limited use but it's the kind of tool I find intersting. Prettey accurate if you set up the pic properly. I think it cost a buck or two.
Anyone else?

My phone bought the farm a few days ago. When I went in to get it replaced, AT&T wanted to send me across town for a "possible" replacement. I get a fantastic discount from AT&T due to a prior arrangement, and I fell for the sales pitch. I had to downgrade to PB&J for a couple weeks, but I grabbed a black 8GB.
Since then, I've been trying a few free apps, but I haven't had the phone long enough for things to really sink in. I'm utilitarian, and some of the built in apps like "Maps" and "Weather" are pretty handy. Another that I found interesting is MeetBubble, but that's because I grew up with a saw in one hand and a hammer in the other. AroundMe is interesting.

....I think a person starts getting old when they decide to stop growing and learning and instead look for security in being frozen in time. It's what leads to the popularity of gated, over 55 communities.....I'd rather be dead.
Besides, I simply love this stuff:)

For a real challenge, try Labyrinth LE while lying on your back with the phone face down.
Hmm. Let me add Flashlight. Yeah, I thought it was a little cheesy until I needed it tonight. It actually worked quite well. :)
Huh. You people are quiet.
If you have fat fingers like me, EasyWriter is a great help. It lets you type email in landscape mode, making the keyboard a lot easier to use, and then sends the text to the email app, where you can add the to: and subject details.

I'm going to have to try the EasyWriter app.
I love Sportacular.
Pandora is good but you get a lot of repeats. The online/PC version has a "Don't play this song for a month" button. I guess you just have to keep adding artists/stations to avoid hearing the same ones over & over.
Lightsaber is a waste of time but I love the SFX. Meh, I quickly removed that after the first 15 minutes. Well, my wife said she'd leave if I didn't.
Free Translator is very ambitious, with about 2 dozen source and output languages. It's decent.
With Sals and TPTP here, I have to mourn the loss of my Zen. A few weeks ago, it never made it home with me. I think someone swiped it. :(
I love my Lightsaber. :D
I've used Now Playing a lot. I like how it will link you right to the movie review websites.
I've also got Sportacular. I downloaded SportsTap first, but Sportacular is much better.
One of the neatest ones I've gotten lately is Shazam. If you turn the app on and hold up the phone while a song is playing it will analyze it, tell you what it is, "tag" it, and link you to a youtube video. It's pretty awesome. :D
I loaded Shazam a while back, and it's been handy. :)
TCS, that completely sucks about your Zen. That's a terrible loss.
This (http://lux.vu/blog/rotary-dialer/) one is fun.
I only use it to call Rose, though.:D

I remember before phones had complicated things like dials and you could just pick up and ask to talk to Aunt Betty. If she wasn't home, the operator probably knew where she was, and would transfer you there. :nanabobo:
I just got my iPhone yesterday but one app I can't live without is BeeJive.
When I owned my Blackberry I purchased this application for it. I couldn't live without it and the iPhone version is just as amazing (even better, IMO). You can get it on their website or through the iTunes app store and it's $14.99 or $15.99 I believe. A lot of money compared to the other apps but well worth it.
It allows you to sign into AIM / Yahoo / MSN / ICQ / Jabber and I believe the MySpace IM client.
You can group your buddy lists by IM client and there's a bunch of other options in settings. It's like a full-featured IM client for your iPhone.
I love it because it saves me from having to add an unlimited plan for SMS text messages, because with just the $30 data plan I'm able to sign in and use that, rather than receiving texts all the time.
It has both landscape and portrait mode for typing to your contacts, so you can hold the iPhone either way.

Wow, Mattie, I love that! I can't wait to get home to get it myself! Very cool!
It really is awesome. You can even customize the session timeouts, the color of the outgoing/incoming chat bubbles, the chat background, and change your display pictures. There's a lot of options and they're all under Settings > Beejive IM in the main iPhone settings icon.

When does the AT&T exclusivity run out on the iPhone?
I want one soooo badly.
I've heard from the folks at Apple that AT&T is locked in until 2010. Who knows after that.
I won't be getting one until it's available elsewhere either.

ZIA, you'd love it. Ask Santa for one now, because once you get one, you'll wonder how you got along without it.
It's a great phone, but I'm really irritated about the lack of support for multimedia messages. That needs to be resolved. Of all the included apps, a totally functional messaging package would handle that. Gimme that app.
What's wrong with it? Is it buggy or does it just not work?
It's BS that sends you a link to a web page. There's nothing like getting a message that's a Kodak moment of your kid, and then having to go to a computer to see the image. What sort of crap is that!?
I got one tonight, and as has been par for the course, I was not able to view it, just as I have not been able to view 50% of the pictures sent to my phone but are redirected to a web site that requires a user/pass authentication that changes every time.
AT&T and Apple dropped the ball. Why must I deal with 1990 roadblocks with my state of the art phone?
I called AT&T weeks ago to find out what was wrong with my account, and was informed that this is normal. WTMFH?
Lazy bastards. If they got the 3G network working as advertised, I bet they would suddenly turn on the full messaging capability.

Yes, I agree that is a problem/P.I.t.A. when you have other peoplesnapping pics with their cell phones and sending them to you. It's minor to me (until it happens).
Some websites are able to tell you're on a mobile device and give you the mobile version without asking. I hate that. Any way to override that? Chase Bank used to use the fullblown site on my iPhone but recently I've been getting the dumbed down version.
So, it's not like me sending you a pic. directly from my Razr? You seriously have to see a msg telling you that you have a msg. only to wait and log in to a website to retrieve it some time later? Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the cconvenience in that at all.

Yep, this is the one huge draw back for me and my iphone. I used to send and recieve pics all the time via phone and now I can't. Also, if you want to send a pic, you have to send it to email, you can't send it to another phone.
My other draw back is minor, but it takes time. When you send SMS to multiple people, you have to keep going back and forth between the message and your phone list. It would be much easier if you could just pick all the poeple and then add them all at once. Like I said, it's not that big of a deal, but it takes a lot more time.
Other then that, I love the phone. I've got to cut down on my book carrying too. As I writer I always need a dictionary and thesaurus, my name book, style book, and a few others, and I was able to download 6 aps into my phone to cover the books so I was able to drop my backpack. That alone is a plus for me.

free translator is nice
There are apps that make it easier to workaround the picture messaging flaw, but it still should have been included as a default option.
Here's to hoping it is fixed in software update 2.3 or whatever the next release will be...

So, Mattie...the Beejive app had an upgrade which allows sending pics and recordings and, I think e mail from the chat window in Yahoo...have you tried it?
One thing I'm not clear on, how do you lock your phone and still hear an audible/vibrate notice when you have received a new IM?
I never get a notice and only when I re-open Beejive do I see IMs that I got while the phone was locked.
Is there a setting I'm missing?
Thanks Sals, I had seen that the Beejive ap had an update, and I love it!
And as far as I know it isn't possible to get notifications of when you receive a new IM when you have the application closed. If I understand the iPhone correctly, this is because Apple doesn't allow aps to run in the background, so basically once you hit your home key, it effectively closes it...
There's an option in settings though (the general iphone settings) under Beejive where you can sign up for email push notifications. I'm not sure how fast that would drain you battery though, since it'd be fetching the new mail every interval.
Mattie, I meant leave the app open and just click the top button to lock the screen so you can put the phone in your pocket or whatever.
I thought that if you did that, the app stays open, just the screen goes off. But even when I do that, I don't get a tone for a new IM.
When I unlock the screen, the app seems to reload, and then I see new IMs.
Sals
I hear a tone when receiving new IM's if I leave the app open and the phone locks itself. Only for a period of a few minutes though. If you don't even have that, maybe check the sound settings in Beejive to make sure you have sounds on for incoming messages (I think it is by default, though).
If I leave the app open and I lock the phone, for the first maybe 5 minutes or so I'll hear a tone as a signal. I don't know why it shuts off after that...

From the description of beejive I assumed you could use your contacts in your phone to replace the SMS feature. You can't, or if you can, I can't figure it out. It only works with other IM's you already have set up, right? Like yahoo or MSN?
Right. It's basically ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Jabber, and MySpace IM but on your iPhone. It's has mostly all of the features of those instant messaging clients. But you use your pre-existing accounts.
There are free and "lite" iPhone apps that do this but none of them do it as good or with as many features. I tried most of the free ones before finding out BeeJive existed for the iPhone. I thought it was just for Blackberry (which I used before the iPhone).
http://www.smule.com/products/zephyr/
(newish, from Smule, the same people responsible for Ocarina).
Liking this.
I finally decided to give Bejive a try, but then I noticed it's going for $15.99 now. That's sort of lame.
Hmm....I think I grabbed it on sale.
Depends on how often you'll use it. Idk. Might be worth it.
Besides, so far you've been cheap with your apps. Splurge a little! :nanabobo:

Runkeeper Pro - This one has been good so far. I have used it twice. The GPS is very accurate. It even emails your data to you after your run.
To be honest, I don't really use a whole lot of apps. I'll mess around with a game once in a while but not often. I do have a spell check that I feel I need and I'd love something to copy/paste. The utilities are really cool ones to add.
I've got 5 pages in use right now and I just counted: I have no less than 12 icons linking me to different places on this board. :eyebrow:
Would someone please point me in the direction of the MyMedia-Forum support group?
I'm running about five pages of apps as well, and I could reduce that to four if I condensed pages and got rid of stuff that I (or my daughter, "Dad, your battery is about dead".) don't use, but I'm always checking out geeky utilities that let me do geeky things, so...
You know what we really need, is a web developer that is well versed in designing mobile-friendly versions of web sites. That, my friends would be awesome.

Yeah, Beejive was always $15.99 (or $14.99, I forget) it was on sale for $9.99 when I got it.
IF you plan on using it and staying connected 24/7 as I always am, then it is definitely worth it. You can send and receive files, voice clips, see others display pictures, etc. It's the most feature-rich IM client on the Iphone. Nothing else comes close (and you pay the price for it).
But hey - it saves me tons on SMS.
OMG!!! Wait, how do you get a link as an icon? That would make things so much easier.
Yep. You just find whatever page you want and then press the + at the bottom. You can also bookmark or email a link to the page. And whatever you're viewing when you set it, it will take a screencap of that spot and become your new icon. I've got several of those for quick viewing. (but I'm a little disappointing in you for not getting to know your phone by now. Shame on you. I happen to sleep with mine)

Last night I realized that a bottle opener app would come in real handy.
You can open bottles with it if you don't mind the dig marks. :D
I'd like an app that works like a mirror. You know, kind of silvery when you turn it on. It would be nice just to check your teeth after a meal. I wouldn't expect it to be really great, though. More like those polished sheets of stainless steel on the walls in camp bathrooms.

I don't need another cellphone plan or anything, so I got an iPod Touch recently, just to compliment my iMac... and damn, it comes in handy if you own one already. My fave app is "Apple Remote", which allows me to control my music from anywhere in or around the house when I'm drinking with friends or whatnot and don't feel like actually playing DJ in front of the computer. Also, "Remote Pad" is great, which allows me to use the Touch as my mousepad/keyboard from the bed when we're watching movies and *ahem* tv shows that make me press a little "continue" button after commercials.
Also Pandora for tunes (great if you've been using it for a long time, sucks when you start), and AllRecipes for Brian's awesome cooking... it shuffles through your dinner options, man! That's just suh-weet.
Most other apps have gotten erased cuz I never use them.
Not an app...but really cool.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10153057-1.html
Hey, that could be really handy.
Anyone try Full Browser?
I just DL'd it and it seems faster than Safari and the nav bars, top and bottom, disappear. You shake the phone or slide your finger up from the bottom to make them reappear.
And I'm using Pandora quite a bit at work.
It's such a great way to find new music similar to what you like and it's ok at work where music is just background sound. But in the car, turned up loud, it becomes obvious how FM radio quality it is.
I have Full Screen. It might be similar. And, yes, it's better than Safari. Also, you can link to it from IMs without needing to re-enter. It just shoots you right back. Nice app.

OK, I don't know what this means.... Speak slowly and a bit louder:rotfl:
Do you mean if someone sends you a link on Yahoo and you touch it, you'll go to Full Screen but not get logged out of Yahoo? I thought any link you hit takes you to Safari. *confused*
Sals
LOL! Yes, that's what I meant.
When using Safari, hitting a link will take you to the page but there was no way to return to your email. Or yahoo IMs...same thing. Now when you get a link, you get the choice of opening it with Safari or Full Screen. Full Screen lets you read the material and then shoot back without any extra steps.
Some may find this useful when sending p0rn links but I've been getting articles about electromagnetism and holographical universes. :rotfl:
Safari has been kicking my ass in developing the mobile version of the site. This app might give me some perspective (and some of my sanity back! I have lost hours trying to deal with Safari crapping out on the site over the last 1.5 weeks!) Having other browsers available is a great tool. Thanks for bringing this up, you guys!
Now if someone would like to port Firefox to iPhone, I might actually get excited.
Glad to see you're still trying to sort it out, John. :D
Maybe you'll have better luck with one of the other browsers.
Sals
This app only works if you have a jailbroken iPhone, but...it's also an app I just discovered that is going to be the reason I NEVER go back to an unbroken iPhone.
This functionality should be default from Apple. Seriously. I've been using this app for 3 days now and it's the only app I've ever thought should actually be included into the default firmware from Apple. It's that amazing.
It has a new feature called "QuickReply" which basically is your default SMS pop up notification to tell you have new texts, but it has a white input box and the keyboard pops up. It allows you to reply to any text message without closing the current app or having to open the text app itself. You just type into the white box! It also has a "show" button (which opens the text message app) or a convenient "call" button allowing you to...duh, call them.
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/ToWhateverEnd/Main%20Album/QuickReply.png
The interface is beautiful because it looks almost identical to the default iphone text app itself. This is the conversation view:
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/ToWhateverEnd/Main%20Album/conversations.png
If you click one of the conversations, it loads the text bubbles just like the iPhone default app does. Nothing is different.
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/ToWhateverEnd/Main%20Album/inbox.png
This is the "SMS" view (not conversations) and it separates your text messages into inbox/outbox/sent/etc. It's a way to view your text messages unthreaded, single, one by one. You can also delete them one by one this way, or delete by sender, or specific folder, or...even delete everything with just 1 button.
My FAVORITE feature, and one that Apple needs to take notice of is...
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/ToWhateverEnd/Main%20Album/search.png
SEARCH! Remember getting a text message but only remember a few words from it? Can't remember the sender? Well, the way the iPhone is set up now, it's IMPOSSIBLE to find it without doing painstaking browsing for hours on end if you have a lot of text messages. Just search a word, or by sender, and any matches automatically pop up realtime into the list. Best. Thing. Ever.
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/ToWhateverEnd/Main%20Album/default-1.png
Just kidding. This is the best thing ever. Want to send a text message but you're browsing in Safari? Doing math in the calculator app? Reading mail? Just hit the up volume sidekey on the phone. It will pop up this little box and allow you to send texts to one or more people just by typing in their name.
But it gets better!
http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff58/ToWhateverEnd/Main%20Album/default2.png
If you just start typing a letter, it starts browsing through your contact list. So "E" would load all of the E names, "Er" would load people in your list who's name might be Erin, Erica, etc. Then just start typing your message, hit send, and that's it. You're still in the app you were before without ever moving to a different screen and interrupting your work.
Oh, and oh yeah...the app also allows you to compose, send, and read text messages in landscape mode. And it works flawlessly.
The program works fully functional and free for 10 days, but after that if you want to continue use you have to purchase a license. It's $12.50 and well worth it, IMO.
Hands down the best app for the jailbroken iPhone, and something Apple really should have included into the phone. Everything works perfectly and it all makes sense.

Wow Mattie! That's a brilliant app! The search is fantastic.
And awesome post!! Thanks for telling us about it.
It really is the most useful program I've ever seen made for the phone, either in the official app store or for jailbroken.
I mean, why shouldn't you be able to text from any menu or screen you're in? Why should you have to close an application just because you get a text message and you want to reply?
You can even write or reply to text messages from the lockscreen with this program. It just makes sense. And when you do want to open up the full inbox and conversation list, to read or compose, it's still there. But it's so much easier and faster this way. Apple probably wishes they thought of it.

I have no idea how much of this is spoilers, but if you want to walk into this summer's Star Trek movie with a completely blank slate of expectations, you should probably move on to the next post. Spoilers ahead!
Ok then. Apparently J.J. Abrams, who's directing the new Star Trek movie, has worked with some comic book creators to (get this) bring a prequel of the prequel to the small screen before it appears on the big one. Whew. They're releasing a series of iPhone apps (http://www.applegazette.com/iphone/star-trek-movie-prequel-comes-to-iphone-ipod-touch/), which are actually "mini-comics" telling the pre-story of the movie.
And here's where it gets really confusing (and spoilerific):
apparently, while the movie is a prequel featuring a young Kirk and Spock, the story's villian is actually a time-traveler from Star Trek: TNG times. Which means the iPhone comics actually star Picard and his TNG crew, and tell the story of the movie's villian, a Romulan named Nero. I originally though the film was a non-canon reboot of the series, but no -- apparently even though we've never seen this era on film before, it is still mean to fit right in the Federation's universe.
Still with us and interested? You actually are a Star Trek fan! (I prefer Star Wars myself.) The comics are going for 99 cents each (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=305916616&mt=8) (you can apparently pick up the same comic in print for $3.99), and are available in the App Store right now.

iheartradio, free
live broadcasts from dozens of radio stations nationwide.
streaming, and speaker volume are only adequate on the 3G model.
a pause/record function would be useful, and I would think very doable, yet there isn't one. probably some concern about skipping commercials.
I intend to try wonder radio, $5.99, (more stations, don't know what else) soon. I don't download many apps, and always run into 'must update information' or some other such nonsense whenever I try to buy an app. Sufficiently frustrating for me to cause me to just pass.
Any suggestions on the best app for Twitter?
I see several on iTunes and Twitter's web site shows at least 2. WTF,why can't there be just one?
Huh?
Anyone?

Where's the Autopilot app? I can't find it. It's been increasingly irritating to have to watch the road while I IM and text.

I love my iPhone. I just got it about 2 month ago and I wonder what I did without the thing. Most of my apps are medical related but in the OR we have alot of fun with the weird facts one. I'll read that off to the team during long surgeries to keep everyone entertained.

Deb, what's the name of that app? The weird facts one. Sounds like fun :)

(WIRED (http://www.wired.com/)) -- Apple is the exclusive gatekeeper to its iPhone App Store, able to reject apps at will -- as it did July 28 with Google Voice.
Some would-be iPhone developers, rejected by Apple, are turning to an unauthorized app store called Cydia.
But some developers aren't taking the rejection lying down: They're turning instead to an unauthorized app store called Cydia, where forbidden wares continue to exist -- and even earn developers some money. That store is operated by Jay Freeman, more fondly known in the iPhone "Jailbreak" community as Saurik. Only five months old, his app store Cydia specializes in selling apps that Apple would reject or ban (or already has).
To use Cydia or the apps available through it, customers need to jailbreak their phones -- hack them to work around Apple-imposed restrictions -- a process that Apple claims is illegal.
Indeed, you can even get a Google Voice app, GV Mobile, through Cydia. After Apple pulled the app from its App Store, developer Sean Kovacs (who is not affiliated with Google) made it available for free through Cydia.
It's difficult to get accurate data on how many customers have jailbroken their iPhones. But based on the number of unique device identifiers tracked on his server, Freeman claims that about 4 million, or 10 percent of the 40 million iPhone and iPod Touch owners to date, have installed Cydia.
On a recent day, he said 470,000 people were connecting to the Cydia store, up from 350,000 per day just a few months ago. Among many free apps, there are also 15 paid apps in Cydia, and the store has earned $220,000 in overall sales in just five months.
"People are so annoyed by Apple and their s---, and if you give them opportunity to go around it, then they'll even pay for it," said Kim Streich, a developer whose app 3G Unrestrictor earned $19,000 in sales in just two weeks through Cydia.
Though Cydia is relatively young, the underground "Jailbreak" community has existed since the first iPhone launched in 2007. That year, Apple didn't yet have an app store for its iPhone, stifling the true potential of the device. This limitation inspired digital rebels to hack away at the iPhone's closed platform in an effort to free its mind. The result? An app called Installer, opening a door for early iPhone owners to add games, utilities and other third-party software coded by developers.
It wasn't until 2008 that Apple offered a software development kit for third-party coders to make programs for its iPhone. That led to the opening of the official App Store in July 2008. Apple's store grew rapidly, accumulating 65,000 apps and serving over 1.5 billion downloads to date.
Many developers abandoned Installer for the more popular App Store, leaving behind an underground space where unauthorized wares could continue to exist. Installer died and became reborn as Cydia, which evolved from an app library into a store in March 2009.
To gain access to Cydia, iPhone owners must jailbreak their smartphones using some freely available tools courtesy of the hacker group iPhone Dev-Team. Given the nature of this procedure, it's clear Cydia's primary audience consists of nerdy rebels wishing to utilize the full power of their iPhones, restriction-free.
Cydia's numbers appear small compared to the rare stories we hear about developers turning into millionaires with hot sales of their iPhone apps in the App Store. But the idea behind a store like Cydia is that you don't have to be huge to make money.
With a smaller market, fewer competitors and a reasonably large customer base, each developer has a higher chance for making a quick buck, Freeman said. Plus, you get more personal attention: Developers submitting their app through Cydia need only contact Freeman, and their app can be made available almost immediately.
That's an enticing alternative to Apple's approval process, which can take months and is notoriously opaque: Some App Store developers have faced difficulty getting answers to simple questions from Apple about their apps.
It's obvious what's driving iPhone customers toward Cydia: Apple's rejections and restrictions of major iPhone apps. Most notably, Apple recently banned apps supporting Google Voice, the search giant's internet-based phone enhancement service that can provide cellphone users with free text messaging and transcribed voicemail.
Angry consumers and developers theorize that Apple banned the Google
Voice apps so as not to detract business from its partner AT&T's phone services. The incident has brewed so much controversy that even the Federal Communications Commission has gotten involved, sending letters to AT&T, Apple and Google inquiring about the reasons for the rejections.
"Looks like Apple and AT&T pissed off a lot of people," Kovacs wrote in a July 28 blog post. "I'll be releasing GV Mobile v1.2 on Cydia for free today or tomorrow."
Another high-profile App Store regulation involves SlingPlayer, an app that enables iPhone users to stream video from a Slingbox device hooked up to a TV. When Sling originally submitted the app, it was capable of streaming over both Wi-Fi and the cellular 3G connection. However, Apple requested Sling to modify the app to work on Wi-Fi only. AT&T said this was a necessary move to prevent congestion on its 3G network.
That restriction spawned the most successful Cydia app to date, 3G Unrestrictor, developed by Streich. 3G Unrestrictor, a $2 app that has sold 9,500 copies, allows the iPhone to circumvent any network limitations imposed by Apple. For example, the app enables SlingPlayer users to stream TV over 3G as well as Wi-Fi; and when using the VOIP app Skype to place phone calls, customers can also use the cellular connection, whereas normally the app only enables users to dial over Wi-Fi.
"It's just amazing what you can do on such a little cellphone, and Apple just forbids customers from doing these things, and it's just a shame," Streich said. "That's why I'm so happy there's a Cydia store."
Another developer who reports positive experiences with Cydia is Jonathan Zdziarski, who said he has made more money through the unauthorized store than Apple's App Store. In February, his app iWipe sold 694 copies in Cydia, compared to 91 copies of iErase in the App Store.
"I guess you could say the App Store is kind of like Wal-Mart, with more
crap than you'd ever want to buy," Zdziarski said. "And Cydia is like the general store that has everything you want and need, from fresh cuts of meat to those homemade cookies you can't get anywhere else."
Though some developers say they're having better experiences selling apps through Cydia, it's unlikely they will succeed on a longer term, said Rana Sobhany, vice president of Medialets, an iPhone app analytics company. She said the average consumer would prefer to purchase apps through a well trusted source such as Apple.
"There have been all these apps downloaded in the App Store because it's easy for consumers to find, download and pay for apps," Sobhany said. "This model is new because Apple has been training people how to download music to their iPods for years."
However, even in the case of the App Store, developers who strike it rich still face challenges recreating their success, said Phillip Ryu, co-creator of the e-book reader Classics, which has sold over 400,000 copies to date.
"If you're hoping to reach the mainstream, the best you can hope for is your app catches on fire and charts high enough for you to make a windfall," Ryu said. "Essentially you aim for the jackpot, and if you don't hit that, it's not going to make you a living."
Freeman said it was too soon to tell whether Cydia would provide developers stable incomes, but he recommends they give it a try, considering the successes some are experiencing. He admits, however, he isn't making much money as the creator of Cydia: Like Apple, he takes 30 percent of each app sale to cover taxes.
"I don't make much money off this project, but I value the community, and I look forward to how this changes the device landscape," Freeman said.

So, I just dl'd your "Remote" apps and will test them out. I haven't made full use of Pandora yet, but my friend Nathan highly recommends it. I'm usually a Last.FM girl. I love my Scrabble app, Zombieville USA is great, and Shazaam is cool. I also have a Vegan Express app that lists basic chain eateries and what constitutes their vegan options if I were that desperate. :p
Admit One and Buster are lifesavers.
As of the last couple weeks, I have to say that it's Skype.
What exactly is Skype used for? Is it just a messaging client?
From a computer, it does IM, cam, screen-sharing, file sharing, etc. On the phone, it's limited to audio and IM. It's very handy when minutes are an issue, and to be honest, the audio is crystal clear. The only hitch is that wifi is required for audio.
I think idaft is a wonderfully entertaining app.
