Ok. I got this idea from a post on one of the actor's sites, but not only are these people going to lose weight, but their hair is going to get long too. You already have a few guys with shaggy hair cuts (which look rather nice), but who's going to cut their hair? There are razors on the plane, so the men don't have to grow beards, but are all the guys (except Jack, 'cause he's is so short) going to have hair in their eyes all the time (kinda sexy, but still). I guess if the season is supposed to take place over a month or so, then they wouldn't have to worry about it too much, but if not, we're talking some long hair here. Could look cool, but it's just a thought.

Maybe someone will find scissors on the plane so no one has to worry about growing hair
I'm more worried about the lack of hygiene. You cant bath in salt water without soap and shampoo forever, someone is gonna get fleas...maybe from the dog! :eek

I see them eventually movie into a cave or some other shelter, finding a spring or two for water to drink and wash in, using the resources around them and who knows how much "stuff" fell from the plane ...:)

I heard when Survivor first started that particular necessity was taken care of for the girls. I also heard that they provided several condoms... just in case. It's something they don't talk about much but I'm sure they still continue it. In this show, however, I'm afraid the women are on their own and I imagine the population will go up within 10 months or so. Let's just hope no one has a disease of some sort.
If I were part of this group, after the first week or so, I would not waste my razors on shaving. I would save the blades for emergencies until I found something else because technically they shouldn't have very many sharp items with them in this day and age. I think most of it would have been confiscated. I'm surprised Jack found what he found so quickly.
And I think, at some point in the show, they will touch upon the topic of periods, if only to show the realism of the situation.

There is no shortage of sharp objects with all those plane parts laying around:rolleyes . I would think that Jorge Garcia will be looking a little thinner by next year if he doesn't get devoured by something in the jungle.:eek

I don't know if they will bring it up at all, but I was thinking that a fairly simple solution would be to raid the luggage. You could use a small piece of cloth and just wash it out. I mean, women certainly survived having periods before pads and tampons.
I wonder if they WILL bring it up? I kinda hope they do so we can see if our theories are right :)

Even today there are women who use cloth pads and wash them out, without any hygiene problems. I know, I'm married to one of them. :-)
The lack of tampons won't affect the women at all.

I agree - let's change the subject. But I do think they'll address it one way or another as in "I need some help... what am I supposed to do...?" My guess is it will be Shannon because for all her attitude she's just a kid.
But let's change the subject. Any other personal issues we should discuss?

I was thinking it was going to be difficult for that girl to raise her kid for the first few months, but then I realized the kid and the mother will probably be better off. She can breast feed him for quite some time (I went to prenatal class with my ex-gf when she got pregnant and the teacher said some women breast feed until the kid is like 5), she has lots of people to help her out and let her rest, and the baby won't have to wear diapers which cause rashes and stuff. On the other hand though she won't have any baby tylenol or any medicine for the baby.

Omg haha, the last topic was totally my fault :rolleyes
Anyways, poor baby...babies need vacsinations [spelt it wrong] and all that so GL to him/her!
Nd, having a baby on an island without medical care sux...i mean Jack can help and all but still...u kno?
Abby Road
10-02-04, 05:51 PM
Babies don't necessarily need vaccinations and being born on the island would mean it's not exposed to the dangers presented by "civilization". Also, think about all the babies born to cultures that aren't near vaccination clinics. The baby could be the luckiest of all.

Claire's worst predicament is not having anesthesia while giving birth. Ouch. :(
I am going to assume that the luggage in the crash site will be raided and appropriate hygienic supplies will be found. They've already borrowed clothes.
However, generally, women tend to 'cycle' together if they're in a group. Imagine the episode where Kate, Claire, Shannon, and Rose all have PMS and chase Jack, Charlie, Boone, Sawyer, Sayid, and Locke into the jungle. :b :lol

Okay - who's Rose? How did I miss a name?
Rose was the black lady that Jack was talking to before the plane crashed and the same one that he had to give "corrective CPR" to.
She said that her husband was in the bathroom so we are to assume that he died in the crash...or did he (curse that episode 3 preview!)
Anyway, maybe Sun will break off from Jin and be the ringleader of the PMS women. LOL!!!

Haha! This whole thread is great! My guess is it will be Shannon Yeah, I think she's probably the most high-maintenance person on the island, so it would be great if she had the first crisis of this sort. I was wondering if they'll continue to do those camera shots that pan slowly up her legs each episode after she hasn't been shaving for a while...

who's going to cut their hair?
Dude, that is the LEAST of their worries. Where on god's green earth is Boone gonna get his "back, sack, and crack" wax?:x
Man, I can't believe all you women and where your minds go! There are many sea sponges which decorate the tropical ocean floor, and NEVER underestimate the absorbancy of sea kelp.
Summer's Eve, eat your heart out. Tampax--we don't need no freaken wings and plastic applicators.

who knew?? This was the funniest thread on the entire forum. Just catching it.
Now everyone: get a grip and get back to the topic:
The only one you will notice with more hair is Jack...well...maybe Jin.
Locke doesn't have any...and the rest have enough hair that about 40 days of growth won't be noticed.
Remember: The season takes place in 40 days. We won't have to worry about any major changes except for Claire.
Just for completeness' sake, you all caught Sun brushing her teeth with that plant and showing Walt how to do it? I think the writers wanted to show us that the survivors are dealing with this problem, and Jin (finding food, I believed he speared that fish for Charlie, too) and Sun (seems to possess some knowledge about plants) might be particularly adept at doing that.
LostinTrinity
10-18-04, 09:17 PM
Funny, I never thought that Jin might have caught that fish. It did seem odd that Charlie did it all of a sudden after seeing his fishing technique. LOL

Maybe the magic regenerative properties of the island will help with the hair issue. Keep Shannon's roots blonde.
In fact if it's REALLY magical it'll be able to determine who to keep completely clean shaven (pretty Boone) and who should be adorably scruffy (Jack and Sawyer).
JacksGirlfriend
10-18-04, 10:02 PM
I like the adorably scruffy types myself.
JacksGirl
As for the baby stuff... I'm a totally crunchy hippy type myself. :) I did the whole natural childbirth thing, not vaccinating, mostly natural health remedies, etc. So unless there are some serious childbirth complications (which are really very rare) Claire and the baby will have no problems.
As for the hygiene stuff - I think Sun will be instrumental in that. She seems to know plants, like the toothpaste thing.

I haven't seen this thread before, and it is hilarious!
I was just talking to my sister the other day, and I suggested that "Lost" should have a makeover subplot for one of the episodes. Picture this: people start to complain about the way they look, and one of the background characters steps forward and reveals that she is a hairstylist, and packed an assortment of scissors and razors and styling products. The survivors rejoice, and one by one start getting makeovers. I think it could be a fun character bonding thing like the golf, plus it would be a good set-up for future seasons. If one of the characters suddenly showed up with a new hair cut or a freshly shaved face, the audience would just assume that hair-stylist lady had been at it again. I think it would be a fun way to explain how all those attractive actors stay so pretty, without destroying the show's believability.
On another note--I don't worry about Claire and the baby healthwise, but post-delivery hygiene is a nightmare (all you fellow moms out there know what I'm talking about!) First there is the weeks of bleeding--there is no way they salvaged enough feminine supplies for that. Then there is the nursing. I would never have gone in public during the first two months of nursing if I didn't have nursing pads--there would have been milk stains on my shirt constantly. Although folded up socks can be an adequate substitute if nothing else can be found. Us women just got the short end of the stick when it comes to personal hygiene in the wilderness. Will they deal with any of this on the show? Probably not. Would it be a nightmarish problem in real life? Absolutely.
