Yeah, Tomorrow People was like that.
You may have better luck watching Yamato. Didn't they do a lot of rewriting when they brought it over?
ETA: And I believe there's been newer yamato stuff done than the late 70s stuff that became StarBlazers. Can anyone verify that?
ETAA: My wife the anime guru verified that they did do a lot of rewriting (including relationships, motives, Desslok's voice,...) when they made StarBlazers. So Yamato may indeed be better. (Thanks, Mina Kitty!)

Battle of the Planets was like that for me.
I think the Yamato question is correct, but off the top of my head I can't think of the specifics.
per wiki:
TV series Space Battleship Yamato • Space Battleship Yamato II • Space Battleship Yamato III
Films Space Battleship Yamato • Yamato: The New Voyage • Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato • Be Forever Yamato • Final Yamato
OVA Yamato 2520 • Dai Yamato Zero-go
I also liked reading the manga.

Yeah, that. I think it seemed more awesome back then because there was very little else to compare it to. It was great for its time, but unfortunately is pretty dated now.
Battle of the Planets was like that for me.
I haven't seen G-Force (aka BotP) since way back then, but sadly that wouldn't surprise me.
Doesn't hold up terribly well either, but Alex Ross managed to make them look hella cool.

It was pretty fun, back in the day, but I don't know if it's a trip I'd care to take again. Just the first series, with each episode ending "Hurry, Star Blazers, There are only _____ days left to save Earth!" was tiresome then. Still, the wave cannon was way cool. :D
