Introducing LOSTaholics Anonymous 3.0!
Since many us who post in LA wanted it to continue, Mary and I asked ~G~ if we could start a new version of LA during his hiatus from the board. Living up to his usual giving manner, he gave us his blessing.
~G~ originally started LOSTaholics Anonymous as a way to pass the time during the long hiatus until the 5th season of LOST began. Since the end of January will be here before we know it, it should be obvious that LA has changed from just a place to pass the hiatus to a thread that will continue even when the show is airing.
This new thread is dedicated to ~G~. Mary and I know that you will agree when we say, “~G~ get your butt back here! We miss you!”
To remind us of the spirit in which LA was started, here's the first post ever in LA:
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w289/Danno001/MyStuff/LOSTaholicsChip.png
Thanks, "Tute :D
My name is G, and I am a LOSTaholic.
Our goal is to be ALL INCLUSIVE, NEVER EXCLUSIVE. As fans of LOST, we all have a commonality. As people, we should treat each other well. So, come on in, have fun, and respect each other :D
I would like to welcome anyone and everyone here, to a place of safety during this hiatus. The only requirement for membership is a desire to make it through this long hiatus in a civil manner :D
I'd like to open this forum with a moment of silence for those who are still on Craphole Island.
Now for the LOSTaholics Preamble:
LOSTaholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their theories, thoughts, and polls with each other that they may solve our hiatus blues and help others stranded in Purgatory.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to make it through this hiatus in a civil manner.
LA is not allied with any sect, theory, or trollery.
Our primary purpose is to survive the hiatus and to help other LOSTaholics achieve Season 5.
The 12 Steps of LOSTaholics Anonymous
1. We admitted we were powerless over TPTB, and the show is unpredictable.
2. Came to believe that a power greater than Benjamin Linus controls the island.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Jack or Locke, whichever we believe will save our asses.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, before we meet Smokie.
5. Admitted to ourselves and others that we have no clue what the Theory Forum is talking about, but it is hella good reading.
6. Were entirely ready to have Locke blow up every station on the Island.
7. Humbly asked Cousin Eddie to keep making LOST Spoilers.
8. Made a list of all the times Hurley said "Dude".
9. Made direct comments to the television whenever Jack says something really, really lame.
10. Continued to take personal inventory, in case we run into Mr. Eko and his big ass stick.
11. Sought through psychedelic plants and sweat lodges to commune with the Island, asking only not to be gored by a boar, eaten by a polar bear, or have Smokie tree-smack us.
12. Having had a successful four seasons, we sought to re-watch LOST in hiatus to catch all of the little details to beat the hell outta that dang quiz.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the first post of LOSTaholics Anonymous! Pull up a chair, fire up the TV for tonights S4 finale. We have lots of refreshments available...

and the LA Pub.

I, like most of us, am dreading this hiatus; it seems like they bring out the...umm...acerbic side in all of us. I would like to not see that happen this time around. So...please, come on in. Let's play nice here, and give the mods a thread they don't need to worry about over this hiatus :D

No, I'm on a bus as 6 this evening. So I still have time. They want us to go to church and do all that stuff first. Then drive for hours, stop at some Amish Museum, eat at the Cracker Barrel, and make the long haul.
And pack, I have to repack about five more times. :rolleyez:

Ask Cracker Barrell if they have Frostie Root Beer ;) Accept no imitations.
I'll be on 95 myself. Gotta go to Jessup for a peanut butter pie, then going to Sound Garden to get LOST Season 3 for 20 bucks AND the spaghetti nosed indian movie THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE :D I'm such a nerd!!
The LOST is for Veronica and her sons, who are towards the end of Season 2 on Sci Fi (S.O.S. is the last ep Monday night) so her son Zack can open it when season 2 ends. He's gonna be so happy. He keeps bugging her to ask me what's gonna happen. He's been pretty good about avoiding it on YouTube. Although he may have "cheated" a little as Veronica said to me the other day "Is there some kind of electromagnetic thing that crashes airplanes." I just laughed and said "what in the world are you talking about?"
She likes Sawyer, too. I just can't win!:rolleyez:

Have fun Kati! Please be careful in NYC. Make sure to keep you purse closed tight the whole time you are there. Chicago has been having a rash of pick pocketing in the Loop area by tag team thefts. One of them bumps into the victim while the other lifts their wallet from their opened purse. Would hate this to happen to you in NYC.

Posting in blue is second nature for me now since I have done it on every message board that I have been on starting way back when. Back then, there weren't such a thing as avatars and signatures. Posting in blue just made it easier to find my posts. I just stuck with me after that.
At first I did Italicize my font too. I got tired of doing that and thought it made it too hard to read after I reread a long post that I had spent a lot of time on. If you look back in my post history, I used to do it when I first joined here but dropped it.

*Ahem* Oh, can I take this one, Mary? :)
In my experience, they are fine outdoors. Can you get them in the ground?? If so dig deep enough to keep inside the pot, for easier removal at a later date. I've had a beautiful rose bush in the backyard for seven years and every year it blooms.

Mary, tell me how you get rose bushes ready for winter. I have 2 mini rose bushes outside in pots that are really heavy. Do I have to bring them in or can I leave them outside without winter killing them?
If you leave them outside you certainly risk losing them - depending on what type they are. Billy's right about digging a hole for them - but that seems like a lot more work than just bringing them inside. You could try sticking them in the garage with burlap or something heavy wrapped around them. Do you have a basement? You could drag them in there.
My shrub and mini roses don't really need much protection except for the ground. The tea roses are a different story. I have a really hardy Tiffany rose that I don't touch, and it struggles along but certainly doesn't thrive. The rest of the tea roses get trimmed down to the strongest six or seven canes - tied together - and then I dump dirt over them to protect them from the cold. This works as well for me as using cones or collars - but mine are in a very protected location from the wind - right by the house.
If you're really curious about your minis you should post in the Gardner's Tips for the Non-Green Thumb and I'll bet the GardenMom or someone else knows. You could always PM her too - she's very nice and pretty smart about the gardening thing!

Hi Deb! How goes it?
Mary ~ Charles just said he is going to go to his dad's and get a hand truck so that he can move them inside. We do have a basement but it's not heated. So it looks like I will have to figure out where in the house they can stay.
DHARMA815
11-23-08, 02:49 AM
Hey Mary. I'm gonna get a top loader, but it is still a HE so it uses less water and does not have an agitator but a wash plate instead, so it looks like it will all work out.
I can't believe I missed the opening of the new LA!

Hey Francesca! Winterizing the roses, I see. I can't wait till I have plants again to worry about. They put my shrubs in yest. YAY!
strandediniowa
11-23-08, 02:56 AM
Francesca - a cold basement is perfect. You want them to go dormant - and just water them a little. I'm not sure what they'll do if you move them into the heated portion - they might do fine but I'm not sure. Maybe we should be googling roses!
ETA - Deb that sounds like a good plan. Yep LA#2 went very quickly - and Francesca did a marvelous job of getting LA 3.0 started right away.

11-23-08, 03:19 AM
Okay, good. We can put them in the basement. That's nice to know. Thanks for the advice.

No change in the move in date. It's all gonna work out, it will be strange having my washing machine on the right but, oh well. c'est la vie. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I can't sleep either 60 degrees indoors.
I have to call the gas and electric company AGAIN apparently.
:wave2: Good afternoon folks. :)
My washer has been on the right since I had it installed 18 years ago. Top loader with front loading dryer on the left. Works just peachy for me. :)
Plants that like to go dormant in the winter do not like a lot of water. I have a corn plant that I have made about 24 other plants from and given as gifts. It is tropical and doesn't like direct sun. What I do in the winter is give it 1 cup of water the first of the month then I forget about it. It will get 1 more regular watering and starting Dec 1. then I change the routine. Haven't killed it in 18 years so I figure I am ok with it. Also no plant food during dormancy. That could kill your plant. Let the plant sleep. ;)
I am gonna be on and off today. I can now sleep for 1 hour before my tummy wakes me up. I am now eating yogurt, dry toast, saltines and plain pasta. Oh joy. :(

I am sorry as well that I missed everyone. I've been sitting in the emergency room at ST Agnes. Got out of the shower and was coughing up blood. After xrays and catscan, they diagnosed me with GERD (not Gertie :) ) Gastrol Esophageal reflux disease. Smoking makes it worse and I have to cut down on chocolate and coffee (and I imagine chocolate coffee :) ) Sooooooo, I think I've reached that age where everything that's good for me, is bad for me :(
With the exception of L-TV! Although if LOST doesn't return soon, I am at high risk for a stroke.
Since I haven't gotten the Prevacid yet, I stopped at Denny's for Chicken Fried Steak, potatoes, english muffin, 2 eggs, and a side of biscuits, and grits. My waitress was wearing ankle boots :D 5 dollar tip for proper footwear!!

Hey gang...
Just wanted to pop in and let you all know what's up.
Friday, I had to take my Dad to the ER... He has pulmonary embolisms (blood clots) in both lungs, and we've found out he has lung cancer.
They did a biopsy today, and more tests than I thought ever existed... We're still waiting on results, but they're already talking chemo and radiation...
Then, this morning, I found out it looks like I'll be losing my job, as the dealership I work for is closing at the end of the year.
Anywho, I'm going to be verrrrry scarce for a while, since working, job hunting, and hospital trips are going to be keeping me severely busy...
Miss you guys... :awwhug:
That is a lot to have on your plate Frosty. Stay healthy. I will keep you and your father in my prayers. One day at a time and if necessary 1 hour at a time. Always here if you even if you just need to vent. I am a great wailing wall. PM me if you want.

Still waiting to get all the information... I know the clotbusters are doing him a world of good, he looks better now than he has in weeks...
Not exactly the lead in to the holidays anyone would want, but what'cha gonna do?
I can relate to not such a great lead into holidays. I have had enough to last several folks a lifetime. I usually am recovering from surgery or ready to have one. I am doing really well with my knee but I cannot drive any distance. My friend's 2 girls are upset I won't be there. Such is life when you have a "boo boo knee" as the 4 year old refers to it. ;)
I have been invited next door to my neighbor's for Thanksgiving. I will be doing the desserts and some some of the sides. I will miss my Godson who is home from Cornell for the long weekend. :(
I will be making most of my gifts, if I can afford the supplies otherwise it is baking time. :) I just got Print Shop Deluxe and will be making Holiday cards. I have lots of craft supplies. I just have to be creative in my thinking. Oh and to make stuff even more fun, I received 95% of the bills from this knee surgery, which is 15 bills. My car is still at the garage because I don't have the cash to rescue it at the present time so I spoke with the mechanic and told him to take is time. I will hold off on selling my Jimmy for the time being.
We all have poop to deal with. We must not forget that the holidays are meant for gifts from the heart both in giving and receiving. Soon as I am done with my surgeries, I want to volunteer at a soup kitchen or meals on wheels. I can relate to those folks too.
Am I rambling again.?

:p
OK. Today I get home from shopping and lunch and turn on the modem, pc and monitor, like usual. I cannot connect to anything on the internet. Everything times out. Thinking it might be FF I switched over to IE and nothing, nada, zilch.
I call Embarq, my DSL provider and I am on the phone with a tech for almost an hour. He was great and we went thru a gazillion things right back to starting in safe mode and using DOS commands to figure out what the heck was going on. Still nothing.
I call my neighbor and ask if his DSL connects to the internet and he says yes.
The tech asks if I will hold for 5 min while he checks some other stuff out. I agree. While I am waiting I remember I hooked up a new phone last night. A 5.8G cordless with an extra handset. Now my mind goes into high gear. The only thing different is the phone.
I then realized that I have a plate attached to the actual wall jack and hook the base on it. There are 2 extra jacks. One says DSL and one says Phone. I only use phone when I have to fax something. I hook up my old phone to the phone jack, disconnect the new phone and voila! I connect to the internet. The tech comes back and I tell him about the phone.
I then looked in the phone manual and it says not to use near a microwave or a computer. That plate in between the wall and the phone is the DSL filter. It cannot handle 5.8G phone. I kept switching the new phone back no internet. Put the old phone back, internet.
If you have a 5.8G cordless phone, make sure the base is in a different room or across the room from your PC. If not you will not be able to connect.
Now I pay good money for my DSL and I was on the phone an hour and I figured the problem. The tech then takes notes from me so he can refer to it for future use. Nice huh?
I returned you Vince? huh?
The time will shut off all my lights in about 15 minutes. I have to get ready for bed and be up for PT in the morning. If you already knew about 5.8G cordless phones then I apologize but it was new to me so I wanted to share. I will catch you in the daylight. Falling asleep here. Sweet dreams :)

At least I'm still alive :)
Thanks for the well wishes Mary, I'm doing ok. Having my first cup of coffee in 2 days.

well, it wasn't that bad, but I did call my supervisor an A--hole around 5 this morning, in front of my coworkers, and got away with it. They all say he was instigating. No referral, no problems. Everything's cool. You ever get that one guy at work that some days he's the best worker on the planet, and others he just doesn't care, shows up 3 hrs late, refuses to work Thanksgiving with the rest of his crew, i.e. ME!?
OK, Francesca, you are excluded since you're working at home and your coworker is Chas :) Unless he goes on hour long coffee runs, claims to be a preacher, makes fun of everyone, and goes to work 3 hrs late!! :lmao:
This dude calls me McGrady. I imagine for the basketball player, and not an offspring of Mayor McCheese and the guy from Sanford & Son who used to suck his teeth all the time :)
Throwing clothes in laundry then going to move that pool table finally, and now we got a treadmill to move.
Calgon, take me awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy!

Not really excluded, Tracy. I have coworkers but they are in CA. The only difference is that I don't have to deal with them face to face other than when I go there.
One of these coworkers doesn't keep up with one aspect of her job which affects my ability to do mine. I've once again had to spend a couple of days cleaning up her mess. My boss is none to happy about this and is going to be talking to her on Tuesday when they get back from the holiday. Basically, he is telling her that she needs to keep current or work somewhere else. She's a nice person but this little chat is a long time coming.

Anything you want to know about the digestive tract you can get from me Billy. I have Crohn's and GERD and other stuff. I take Prilosec by script not OTC. I eat chocolate, drink coffee (even chocolate coffee) and other such no no stuff. I did quit smoking but that was in 2002. I had been smoking 30 some years by then. I used to quit when I had a Crohn's or GERD flare up but anyhoo. Feel free to post or pm me. :)
Sorry Dew-dles! I dunno how I missed this post but glad I found it, and Mary's below it as well! Good to know that I can still enjoy life. Still single and miserable, but hey, I still got my chocolate, and java, and LOST! :D
ETA- before anyone asks, Miss V and I are just "good friends" ;) We got a distance thing working against us and she has 2 boys in high school doing very well up there. One is even flying a biplane with help from a neighbor who's a pilot.

Billy do not mistake my having chocolate and stuff as free license to do so. There are tricks to employ and times when you should abstain. Every thing in moderation once you really understand what you are dealing with. :)
Now back to waiting for pumpkin pie to get out of the oven so I can roast butternut squash for a side dish and then to make the tiramisu once all the bowls and stuff are nice and icy cold. l8tr :)

It's a little gross Cindy - but very, very effective. Try googling it. It takes me too long to find pics and post them . . . plus it might be something not everyone wants to hear about! I know Francesca uses one too.

There is such a thing as rum extract and it is very good tho I do like spiced dark rum. I used Frangelico in my tiramisu. I don't drink much but I sure use a lot cooking. Someone has to keep Julia Child's memory alive. ;)

We've had a good day here. I finally have the house emptied out and decided to dig more Christmas lights up from the basement to do the front of the house tomorrow. Out of six strands of lights, that I have used for only one year, four do not work at all, and the other two only light up half way. I've checked the fuses and all of the bulbs, to no avail. So I have decided not to think about it again until tomorrow.
I'll post a couple of pics in a little bit once I've uploaded them.
Hope everyone else is doing well!

Hi Mary! :awwhug:
What a bummer about the lights. It's such a pain when that happens. At least it didn't happen after you hung them.
I'm just sitting here feeling like a stuffed, well, turkey......but for some reason the pumpkin pie is calling my name again.

Francesca! :Hugglepounce: I don't know what I'll do about the lights - probably just go buy some more tomorrow. :rolleyez: I've just been invaded by teenagers so I'm going to go dig out leftovers for them and eat another piece of pie before it's gone.
Here's a pic of my Thanksgiving bonbons - they were so damn good. The container that they're in is a milk chocolate log!

Love the pics Mary. The chocolate looks delish. Did it last long?
We took both of the cats with us today. Gypsy was the toast of the town while Lightning hid most of the time. I told Charles that in the future he is welcome to take Gypsy over when he is visting by himself but on holidays the cats need to stay home. It stresses Lightning out too much and I won't leave him home by himself. It just wouldn't be fair.
Minks reminds me of our cats but mainly Gypsy. Gypsy actually tries to get up on the table sometimes when we are having dinner. He tried all day to get something to eat. In the end he ended up with a little turkey.

Gonna hit the sales tomorrow first thing to buy my bedroom suit and a few odds and ends for my house. NOT looking forward to the crowds!
Hi Deb. :) Yes their friend took the rest of the tiramisu home with him. He was funny. It is so light he kept saying in his Hungarian accent. lol
