First off, let me apologize if this has already been covered, but I couldn't find it on the Locke board.
Do we know why exactly he is in a wheelchair? Did I miss the explanation? I know they say he is paralyzed, but I'm wondering how do we know it is a physical injury and not just some pyschosomatic trauma? :rolleyes

I don't think we do know- yet.
No, we don't know yet.
Psychosomatic trauma makes more sense in the way that Locke could suddenly walk. However, I've only heard of psychosomatic paralysis disorder called conversion disorder, a sort of "imagined" disability that tends to strike people who are naive and uneducated after a traumatic event. That doesn't add up to what we know about Locke. Furthermore, conversion disorder disappears within about a week. I vote that Locke's paralysis was caused by an actual injury and is not all in his head.
edit- Odd. I just looked up Conversion disorder online, and several sites say that it can last for years. My psych teacher said that the symptoms never lasted for more than a month, in extreme cases. Maybe I'm wrong, and Locke does have conversion disorder. Though that wouldn't be as interesting as miraculous healing.

This has been discussed in different threads, most notably in the Walkabout episode discussion thread (http://p073.ezboard.com/flosttheunofficalforumfortheabcseriesfrm6.showMess age?topicID=14.topic)
(This link is just for reference, as the thread is closed now)

Thank you! I tried to find it but didn't look in the episode threads, just Locke's and general discussion. Color me oh so blonde! :o

On IMDB they said it was a psychosomatic paralysis. But that just seems too easy an explanation.
It needs to be something miraculous.
ETA: Prof_Frink, that is a spoiler. Posting spoilers is a heinous offense. Be sure to clearly mark any spoilers or spoilerish information so people can avoid it. -LIW

Wanting to but my 2 cents out here about Mr. Locke.Which may or may not be a spoiler,so...
ETA: this is speculation, not a spoiler - LIW.
What I think will happen is...Locke will driving along somewhere with Helen. When they'll cross paths with Locke's father.Locke becomes inraged, chases after his father, then WHAM!! There will a car crash,Helen will die right there next to Locke. And Locke be knocked out, wake up to hear E.M.T.'s call out the time of death. Then pass out, only to wake up at the hospital where Dr. Sheppard will inform Mr. Locke "I'm sorry to have to tell you this sir, but,you will never walk again."
O.K. you may start to rip this apart people.Just my two cents.:wave2:

I think there might be some accident happened to Locke, relating to his father, which made Locke despairing and not have any faith in life any more.
But the crash made him believe in miracle again - a really new born...

I saw a quote from Carlton Cuse, I think, saying that we'd soon find out - he didn't specify when but I think the implication was in this season still. Unfortunately I can't remember where the quote came from, could have been TV Guide.

My question has always been the following?
Do we know for sure that Locke is suffering from paralysis?
I believe that he was temporarily using the wheelchair after his kidney operation.
I think that he walks now because he could always walk.
