Don't get me wrong I think Locke is an awesome character. He is a huge asset to the survivors, but I can't help feeling that last night he was manipulating his fellow searchers, ie: telling Walts dad he did not need help, telling Jack they should stick together and telling Boone to head back.

It seemd to me he was using reverse phsycology to challenge these characters to defy him, they acted on his 'dare' and were sent further into danger. I swear an evil grin passed over his lips when they disobeyed his 'advice'.

I can't help but think he wants to lead Boone further into the woods, Jack to search out danger and Walts dad to go on a wild goose chase. Did anyone else see that evil grin or get the sence he was manipulating them? Any theories why?

why would a grown man want to lead a young prettyboy out into the woods? i think Morbius would have the answer to that...

I couldn't agree more. He was making it seem like he was "protecting" them but I don't think he was, at all. I think he was trying to either manipulate them into danger's path or he was trying to steer them away from something he didn't want them to find (which goes along with the "Ethan & Locke are in cahoots" theory).

BTW, my first post here...been lurking for about a week and love the site!

It would sadden me to see Locke turn out to be less than honorable, but you do bring up some good points. It's a sound idea...geeks usually have a better understanding of things as then tend to be more mentally stimulated than most. You know I was watching Willy Wonka the other night and I just thought of those parts where Wonka warns the children when they do something bad...the warning is obvioulsy in vain, cause he knows what they are going to do. I wonder if it's a similar tactic with Locke...he knows they won't listen but gives them a shot to back out, fully knowing they won't.

I disagree with your conclusion. The search party did not need to be as large as Michael wanted it to be. That many people would have slowed them down and, although in hindsight it was a good thing for them to split up, it would have been better for them to stay together so that the group was stronger when they cought up with Ethan and so no one get's lost (forgive the pun).

I'm not buying it.

I agree that Locke probably knows a lot more than he's sharing but I think there would've been a number of ways for him to veer Jack, Kate and Boone off the trail and they likely would've been none the wiser.

I don't think his motivation is totally benevolent.

As for refusing to take Michael with him, I almost get the sense that was due more for Walt's benefit. Locke has consistently been helpful for Walt and its clear from last night that Walt thinks highly of him. Locke may have just been helping the kid by protecting his dad.

Its clear he is letting everyone make there own choices.
Just look back at all he has done. (in no special order)
1. When charlie is trying to kick the drugs, Locke first helps out but then steps aside and lets charlie make his own choices (remember he wsaid he would give the drugs back to charlie if he asked 3 times)

2. He hands the knife to Sayid when sayid went of to tourture Sawyer.
Again he lets this happen, he lets Sayid make his own choice

3. While searching for Charlie and Clair he again points in a direction then gives the choices that each character can take. Even with boone.

4. I believe he knows the island is magical or spirtual. He knows everyone has there demons and everyone must face them and over come them. (what was the deal with the rain is locke god (joking) )

5. Last point is, he keeps helping walts dad out but walts dad still seems to not like Locke. First time he helped him out was when he found the dog and let walts dad bring it to the son. (hes trying to have the father son relationship strength between walt and his dad)
Then he tells if you want to search fine search south (again gives him a choice to search or not) and i believe south is danger free so he has no problem sending them that way.

I think the clue was what Walt said to his dad. Locke is a warrior. Hero worship or a prophecy ? Something is going on and I don't know how much Locke knows but real think he will be the bad ass on the white team!
