I figured it out, when Locke came to in the pilot it was not him but the monster taking over his body. This is why he wiggled his toe in amazement that he was now somewhat human and could feel the things a real person feels, like the rainwater on his face.

This is why he said he looked into the eye of the island and it was beautiful, he was looking at himself. Also, why he hits Boone in the upcoming episode, something under that box reveals some secrets about the island he doesn't want the others to know about. He asked Boone did anyone know you were coming up here? Botta boom, bang on the head bye-bye Boone!

I am not positive, but it seems to me the promos were possibly taken out of context and Locke may have bonked Boone on the head for a reason other than keeping him from telling anyone about the metal thing.

Maybe he hit him to stop him from doing something else, like maybe hurting someone? Shannon?

if locke is the human body of an island "inhabitant", then possibly the "monster" is his higher power? or ruler? just to let him know who is really in charge. locke is very insightful and knowledgable. he just knows sooooo much. he is definitely a heavy weight in the story.
