he turned the failsafe when he wasn't meant to.
hawking said the greatest thing he will do in life is push that button. but turning that failsafe was not meant to happen. this led a series of events which resulted in widmore finding the island and the oceanic 6 getting off.
and since he was able to change "the future", it makes him special...
ok, i'm nuts, and i can't explain it further so maybe someone else would like to take the baton...

More than the six got off the Island. He did as well, Penny found him, they married and had a child. I'm sure that was not supposed to happen either. She told him he would not give Penny the ring because it was not supposed to happen. Was he supposed to meet up with her again and have a child? If he goes back to the Island and fixes things, will Penny and the child never be?
I have to say, I am getting very confused. So far, I dont care if I miss an epi or not. I don't mind trying to solve things, but this just does not make any sense to me at all, lol..............
Special perhaps because his conscious mind time traveled to/from an earlier physical self and yet he survived because he found a 'constant'.
No one else experienced this phenomenon and lived because they didn't have a 'constant'.
Therefore, in Daniel's eyes that may be what makes Desmond 'special'.
Desmond is special somewhat because he is Scottish, who are actually displaced Irish, which is the true underlying reason for his being special. The Irish are known for doing unusual things on islands, and Desmond's artistic and literary inclinations can be attributed to his heritage as well. In fact, just as certain of Irish poetry and music are considered 'timeless', this quality is becoming manifest in his life. Bewitched by dreams and beguiled by voices out of time, so he carries on as this special character, even whose ancient name, Daes-Mhuman, invokes the Spirit of Enchantment.

This is it - nothing more complicated than that. Daniel stated the rules: "whatever happened, must happen" and "what didn't happen, can't happen." But Desmond is not bound by these rules because he is unique.
The real question: did Desmond already deviate from the rules that Daniel has laid out or is it something that he still has to do (or will do by choice)?

We shouldn't overthink this. According to Hawking, he was supposed to go to the island and push the button...which he did. She never told him anything beyond that. None of us can be sure of what was "supposed" to happen after that. Desmond's story has not played out yet. There is much more to come - we don't have the answers yet because they have not been presented.

I would guess that originally in 1996, Desmond never met Daniel, but he did when his had the time sickness and Daniel sent him to Oxford. That was a violation of the rules that Daniel laid out for Sawyer that Desmond wouldn't open the door of the hatch for Sawyer, because Sawyer didn't meet Desmond until he came out of the hatch.
By those rules, Desmond should have never been able to meet Daniel at Oxford in 1996, but he was able to, changing the original events in both Desmond and Daniel's lives.

It is not necessarily true that Desmond and Faraday didn't already meet in 1996. There have been allusions to Faraday suffering memory-loss, in the form of Charlotte testing him with the cards, his not being able to say why he was crying at the Sunda Trench news report, his constant (!) reference to a not-very-thick should-be-easily-memorized notebook. Memory-loss could be also attributable to his experimentations with the rat/himself(?), keeping in mind Desmond asking why Faraday was not wearing protection for his head, as he was with his body, against the effects of the electromagnetism.

I think Desmond's special because of his tie to Widmore through Penny, and I believe he will ultimately be in a position to protect the Losties because of this connection. Desmond is my favorite character ... that also makes him special. teehee
