View Full Version : Crock pot cooking help, please
Can't wait

I was hoping I could get a little help from someone who cooks in a crock pot more often than I do. I want to cook two chicken breasts in barbeque sauce but I don't know how long to set it for. I've seen recipes that have them cook for 8 hours on low but for two, that seems extreme. How long should I set the pot for? Thanks for any advice.

I do this all the time....it is sooo yummy.
I put a whole chicken in on low for most of the day. It isn't an exact timing thing...I keep checking it until the meat falls off the bones then I know its done.
Try a rack of ribs this way too

Bones or no bones?
No bones won't take as long.

Thanks LV - I will try that with a whole chicken but I already have the boneless chicken breasts in my freezer.
Mina - they are boneless, skinless breasts

What type of settings do you have? I have a newer unit with built in timers.
For 2 decent size chicken breasts I would do 3-4 hours on low, but you will need to keep an eye on it because the bbq sauce will start to crust up on the sides and will be a royal pain to get it off.

Cluck - thank you! I have a pot that only has the warm/low/high settings. So, 3-4 hours should be good? Thanks. I just don't want to overcook them, I hate dry chicken.

If you are going to be cooking them in BBQ sauce, no need to worry about dryness..
I don't use a crock pot, but I'd worry about drying out boneless breasts. It would be pretty zippy to just broil them for 5- 10 minutes and then brush them with the bbq sauce the last few minutes. But take the word of people who actually use slow cookers!

I go the LV route, but them on low in the AM, and forget about them til dinner time.

Not if you use the plastic crock pot liners. Just throw them away when done with no clean up of the crock pot.

As long as there is fluid or something providing moisture in the pot (BBQ sauce or whatever), you really can't overcook something in the crock pot.
I often cook pork roasts in the crock pot, and I've cooked them from 4 hours on high all the way up to 12 hours on slow and it's always the same result.
Just push some buttons on the front and say it's done when the lights go off.
The crock pot knows what it is doing, so don't worry about it.

How does it know this. Is it some sort of conspiracy? Just like -- How in the world does a Thermos know to keep Hot foods hot and cold foods cold?

I don't worry about crock pot liners, I use cooking spray, the mess wipes right out

That's fine as well. I was just offering up something to the person who has
been unable to find their own solution to the crusty crock pot issue. Cooking spray...crock pot liners... a decent dishwasher named Fruiga Sanchez...
'tis all good.

I feel the same way about those toilet cleaner gel blobs.
They not only clean the toilet everytime they flush, they also make great air fresheners throughout the entire house and can be used for purely decorative reasons. They make a lovely addition to wall sconces.
They are however.... not of much use in the crock pot.

Ok, well by reading this i just discovered that a slow cooker can also be refered to as a "crock pot":nanabobo:
Oh, and also that i cook things in it the same as WS, Warty and LV...Basically throw everything in before i go to work, with plenty of fluids, switch on then leave till dinner time and voila.

I was 37 before I figured out what a Dutch oven was...
It's basically a crock pot that requires an external heat source.

Explains why they never quite made "World Power" status.

I had this huge giant pot I was trying to sell at a garage sale. It sat there all day with
no one looking at it. At 3 p/m I decided to put a big sign on it that said "authentic Dutch oven". I got $9.00 for it within 10 minutes.
That was sweet.
Yeah I know... I get excited about the little things in life.

It's all about the marketing...if you hadn't specified "authentic", you might have only gotten five bucks.
