View Full Version : Sports pre-empted Lost! (aka The Sports Hate Club)

Well, I'm all pumped up because it's Wednesday, I check my tivo's "to do" list, and see that... yes... once again Lost is being pre-empted and won't come on until 1:05am! Grrrrrrr!!!

Then I look at the episode details, and see that it's actually the repeat from last week! No new Lost for me tonight at all! GRRRRRR!!!

Finally I look ahead and see I gotta wait until Friday at (you guessed it) 1:05am to see the new episode. GRRRRRRR!!!:mad:

Well I for one haaaaate televised sports. It can be fun to play in a game, but I have never understood why it is interesting to watch two random groups of people I don't know compete against each other for titles and contests that have no intrinsic value.

For those of you who like sports, good for you. More power to you. Have fun watching the game tonight.

For anyone else, who couldn't care less if all sports was relegated to the various sports-specific channels... this is the place for you.

Down with sports!

Not since Heidi

Although, TBS had that ugly incident with The Steve Harvey show during the ALDS.

I dunno. Something with big sweaty guys throwing a ball around, probably.

Eh? What wouldn't happen? Sports pre-empting Lost? Or Sports getting relegated to the sports channels?

Sports pre-empting Lost.

They don't program new episodes around sporting events anymore. Not on the network level, anyway. ABC wouldn't carry any big sporting event on a Tuesday, that's what ESPN is for.

I recall missing the first 45 minutes of Willie Wonka on a Sunday night on NBC when I was a kid because the Jets and some other team went to OT and kept calling time outs. That stunk.

Well, that's what's happening. At least where I am, in North Carolina. It's already happened at least two other times this season, too.

I would have rioted when they did it the first time.

I was going to say, North Carolina, must be the Heels. On ABC, though?

In CT, it's Lost at 8, then Lost at 9.

I didn't think any ABC affiliate could change prime time scheduling. I can't imagine the network agreeing to any such programming that would interfere with a national broadcast.

And it's happening again tonight. To add insult to injury, it's a dreaded Iowa State game, as opposed to my beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. I love sports, so I can't join the club. But it's still irritating as hell. Luckily, the Big Twelve games are early enough so that the show will just start an hour late for me. I would be having tantrums if it was preempted and shown at 2 in the morning.

If you have a digital TV or cable, does you local ABC channel have a secondary digital channel? Maybe they will show Lost on the secondary channel. Last year when the hurricane hit Houston, the local channels had non stop news coverage for over a week so they showed all the network programming and sports on the secondary digital channel. For example, my ABC affiliate is on channel 13.1 but they have additional digital channels on 13.2 and 13.3.

Uhm...huh? How they broadcast has no bearing at all on what they broadcast.

Crandy - This sports stuff is regional and in those cases, I believe, the local affiliate has a contract with the school or conference and therefore is contractually obligated to show the games. It sucks if you're not a sports fan.

ETA - I know sgtdraino is in North Carolina and stranded is in Iowa, but I've heard of it happening all across the country. What usually happens is that the local ABC affiliate starts airing the show around 1:30AM local time. If they show both episodes (rerun + new), you're in for a late night. Arkansas is another place I've heard of this happening lately.

I always thought that the local affiliates had an obligation to the network schedule and that would trump a conference agreement. Or rather, that the network would allow the affiliate to do that.

I am huge sports fan but I wouldn't want my network programming to be effed up. We have secondary channels and other local channels to show Syracuse games and whatnot.

Whether it is being broadcast in analog or digital format, it has no bearing on the programming. The producers decide what is going to be shown and that is what is shown. The format in which it is streamed makes no difference.

Nope but the network's secondary digital channels are only available with a digital TV/converter or if the local cable company decides to carry it. The local network channel now has the power to move the network programming to the secondary digital channel if they have local programming they rather show. I live in a major city so I don't know if everyone has secondary digital channels. Probably not.

The point is, the switch to digital will not have a negative impact on the scheduling. If anything, it helps it, as Spidey has said, by moving programming to the secondary channel.

SpidermanHouston
02-18-09, 10:56 PM
Yeah, I don't think they did this because of the digital switch. It's like Brian mentioned, they were contractually obligated to show the game. Sounds like they probably don't have many other local channels to broadcast these games. But at least if they have a secondary digital channel, they can now move the network programming to the secondary channel if available.

That is correct. Presently two, plus both the repeat and new episode scheduled for tonight.

I would break in somebody's store window and steal a TV, but what's the point? There's nothing good to watch on it!

Negative, Spiderman. If I had like, the more expensive cable lineup, then maybe I would have some of those duplicate network channels. But we here at Station 7 are on a budget.

Touché.

Seriously though, I figured the only parts of NC that would pre-empt LOST for basketball would be around UNC or Duke. I don't know how close you are to those two but it doesn't surprise me that they'd show basketball over LOST in those areas. The only thing that sport around here that pre-empts anything is the World Series or SEC football, and even then it's pretty rare.

Hmm. Well, the power of tivo hooked up to my cable system shows me that there ain't no other Lost to be had, until 1:05am Thursday and Friday... except of course for Season 1 being shown on sci-fi. So, either the tivo is wrong, or there is no Lost. I only get one ABC channel, so I can't really comment on secondary channels versus main channels.

And the last two times it was pre-empted, I did actually turn the TV on and saw sports there instead.

Did they change this?

Beats me!

Maybe if they are showing "jeopardy" right now instead of the program to be found on 13.2, "My Wife and Kids", you will see Lost.

I'm beginning to see a pattern here.

My cousin is a fan of Lost and lives in Alabama. Lost is pre-empted by football and basketball almost every week.

My friend lives in South Carolina and is a fan of Lost. It is pre-empted almost every week.

My other friend lives in Mississippi and his Lost is pre-empted almost every week.

South, anyone?
