When some old friends drop in unannounced, Sawyer is forced to further perpetuate his lie in order to protect them.

Hmmm, so new questions/thoughts brought up by this episode:

1. I wonder if the Losties don't do something to make it impossible for women to have kids in the future. I know the popular theory is that Ben does it since his mom dies, but... we have a fertility doctor and love triangles galore, why not the Losties?

2. Does anyone else get the feeling that maybe this cycle happens over and over again - the plane crashes, survivors wander the island, Others take kids, survivors get off the island and somehow get roped into coming back? Like maybe someone (Widmore? Ben? Christian? Juliette?) or multiple someones is making them do it again and again until they get it "right," whatever that might mean? I think that every new episode this season...

3. Are Kate and Juliette gonna cat fight?

4. Ben. Little Ben, creepy Ben, etc etc etc. What is his DEAL?! Is the jail scene after he saw Richard? He was a bit younger when he ran into the jungle, right? Will we see Annie? I think Jack was given the short end of the deal in this episode. I never used to like Jack, but he can't be a do-nothing, sit-still character. First they threw the audience a bone by making him a Workman, and that was fine--he needed an ego check. But he was pretty much trashed by Sawyer and asked to just wait while Sawyer got around to fixing things. That's not Jack's style--it isn't true to his character, like him or not. He obviously wants to know what the next move is, and he should be involved. Sawyer reminded me more of the Jack of old in this episode--taking over and dominating without any input from anyone else. Didn't work for me.

I used to be really confused, but I completely get it now. If it happened, it happened.

Think of it this way. Locke appeared to Richard in the 50s and told him when he was going to be born and then, lo and behold, Richard was there watching his birth. This happened before Locke ever turned the wheel in 2004. There is only one timeline, so what happened happened. That's why Ben remembers all of these people and requested them from Season s. It's why he killed Juliette's boyfriend, because he was in love with her as a child, etc. Nobody is changing the past, because all of this stuff already happened.

Desmond is the only one that can somehow change this. Maybe Locke too somehow?

I think it did happen, but that's not what I mean. Adult Ben saw Sayid as a child and in Season 2 of this series Adult Ben recognized Sayid from his childhood. He just didn't say anything about it.

I think the "can we change the past?" issue has been nearly definitively settled in this episode. If Juliet originally isn't in 1977, she can't save Ethan. If Ethan isn't alive, the events of S1-4 don't happen. Since Ethan was alive and since the events of S1-4 did happen with Ethan as a crucial component of the narrative, that means Juliet was always in 1977. Which means there was never an original version of the timeline in which Juliet didn't time travel.

This disproves the theory that Juliet time-traveling to 1977 wasn't part of the original timeline. It was always a part of the original timeline. A theory that depends on the ability for time-travelers to change time would have required events in the S1-4 version of 2004-2008 to be different, and for events in 1977 after the time skipping to result in inexplicable paradoxes that irrevocably changed the timeline. Since none of this happening (in fact, everything Juliet and Sawyer have done so far seems to reinforce the pre-existing timeline,) then we can only conclude that the Lostie's time-traveling shenanigans always happened. There is no alternative.

Desmond is the only exception to the rule.
