Episode 16 - The Incident Part 1
Written by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse
Directed by Jack Bender
________________
[Opening scene is in an ancient, darkened room, lit only by the glow of fire. The clinking and whirring sounds of a spinning wheel fill the room. The view pans from clay pots sitting on a stone floor to a close-up of the spinning wheel. A sandal clad foot operating the pedal comes into view, followed by hands feeding thread into the machine. The view pans back to show a man wearing a white tunic sitting at the spinning wheel. Flames lick upward from a round fire pit in the center of the room. A close-up of threads hanging from an unfinished tapestry is shown. Through the threads, a face comes into view, offering the first glimpse of the mysterious Jacob. He is now working on the tapestry with a long-bladed knife. The view switches to behind Jacob, showing him methodically working on the tapestry. Scene closes with a view of the crackling fire.]
[Scene switches to the beach. Jacob walks barefoot into the water and retrieves a fish trap. Waves splash over the rocks along the shoreline. Jacob takes the trap onto the beach and dumps a fish out onto a rock. After filleting the fish with the same knife he was working on the tapestry with, he sets the meat on another rock that is heated by a small fire. Once the fish is cooked, he puts a piece on a large leaf, sheaths his knife in the sand and sits down to eat. Facing the ocean, he sees the Black Rock floating along the horizon. An unidentified man wearing a black tunic approaches Jacob from behind. He is also gazing at the ship out at sea.]
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Morning.
JACOB: Mornin'.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Mind if join you?
JACOB: Please.
[The new arrival circles in front of Jacob and takes a seat a few feet away.]
JACOB: Want some fish?
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Thank you. I just ate.
JACOB: I take it you're here 'cause of the ship.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: I am.
[The two men sitting at the beach continue gazing at the Black Rock.]
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: How'd they find the Island?
JACOB: You'll have to ask 'em when they get here.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: I don't have to ask. (looks over to Jacob) You brought them here.
[Jacob sets the leaf he'd been eating from aside and the other man looks back out to sea.]
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Still trying to prove me wrong, aren't you?
JACOB: You are wrong.
[The view switches back and forth between the ship on the horizon and the two men on the beach as the conversation progresses.]
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Am I? They come... fight... they destroy... (looks at Jacob) they corrupt. It always ends the same. (looks back to sea)
JACOB: It only ends once. Anything that happens before that... is just progress.
[The unidentified man looks intently at Jacob, who returns his stare.]
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?
JACOB: Yes.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: One of these days, sooner or later... I'm going to find a loophole, my friend.
JACOB: Well, when you do, I'll be right here.
[The unidentified man breaks the eye-lock first; looking again out at the Black Rock.]
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: Always nice talking to you, Jacob.
JACOB: Nice talking to you too.
[With one final glance at Jacob, the man in the black tunic stands and departs. The view pans slowly upwards; first, revealing the foot of the statue, then ascending it's length from bottom to top. A final view of the statue shows it in it's entirety from a rear angle; looming high above the meeting of the two men at the beach.]

[FLASHBACK]
[Scene opens alongside an old country road. Fields span out into the distance. The view pans right, passing two beat-up trucks. Behind the second truck stand young Kate Austen and young Tom Brennan. They are in the parking lot of a country store. Kate is wearing a backpack and Tom has his favorite toy airplane in-hand.]
KATE: Are you gonna do it?
TOM BRENNAN: Uh-uh. You do it.
KATE: Fine. I'll do it. But you're gonna be lookout, okay?
TOM BRENNAN: Okay.
[The two kids emerge from their hiding spot behind the truck and head toward the entrance of the store. Inside, the shopkeeper speaks to a woman next to a glass case full of various fruits and vegetables. Kate heads down an aisle, out of view of the shopkeeper, while Tom stands watch. Kate gives a look back at Tom, who glances over at the shopkeeper that is still tending to the customer. Tom nods to Kate, indicating it is all clear. Kate removes her backpack, then takes a lunchbox from a shelf and puts it inside. With her pack slung over her shoulder, Kate moves to leave. Tom walks partway down the aisle, then turns to leave side by side with Kate. They make it to the door but before they can escape they are stopped by the shopkeeper.]
SHOPKEEPER: What you kids got there? Open the bag.
[Kate reluctantly complies and the shopkeeper removes a New Kids on the Block lunchbox from her pack.]
SHOPKEEPER: Mmhmm. Where'd you get this?
KATE: Got it over there.
SHOPKEEPER: I know you. You're Diane Austen's girl. What's your name?
KATE: Katie.
SHOPKEEPER: Well, Katie, I'm calling your mom, then the cops, because I don't tolerate stealing here, you understand?
[The shopkeeper moves Kate by the shoulder over to the counter and walks around to stand behind it when another voice speaks up.]
JACOB: No need to do that... I'll pay for it.
[Jacob steps to the counter and gives the shopkeeper some money.]
JACOB: I hope this is enough.
SHOPKEEPER: Well, as long as somebody pays for it, guess there's no harm done.
[The shopkeeper hands the lunchbox to Jacob and looks down at Kate.]
SHOPKEEPER: But I don't want to see you in here ever again without your parents, you understand me?
[Kate gives a meek little nod in response and the shopkeeper walks off to a different part of the store. Jacob offers a mock wince to Kate, then hands her the lunchbox.]
KATE: Thanks, mister.
JACOB: (softly) You're welcome.
[Jacob squats down to speak with Kate at eye level.]
JACOB: You're not going to steal anymore, are you?
[Kate shakes her head no and Jacob playfully touches a finger to the tip of her nose. Kate smiles in response.]
JACOB: Be good, Katie.
[Jacob then stands and departs with Kate watching him leave.]
[PAST]
[Scene opens with Sawyer, Kate and Juliet, all still cuffed in place. The three captives sit silently as the sub takes them away from the Island.]
CAPTAIN BIRD: (over the comms) Welcome aboard, everyone. We will be doing some system checks offshore here before heading out into the open ocean and submerging to our operational running depth.
[Mitch is shown in another compartment handing out small cups of sedatives to the passengers.]
CAPTAIN BIRD: (over the comms) You should be receiving your sedatives and then we will escort you to your sleeping berths.
[Scene switches to the bridge, where the captain is speaking into the comms.]
CAPTAIN BIRD: Have a nice rest. See you on the other side.
[An exterior view of the submarine is shown from underwater before scene switches back to where the three captives are being held.]
KATE: We have to get outta here.
SAWYER: Outta of here? We're underwater. What the hell are you doing here? How'd you get caught?
KATE: I came back to get you.
SAWYER: Came back to get me for what?
JULIET: Where's Jack?
KATE: Jack is on his way to blow up a hydrogen bomb.
SAWYER: Why the hell would he do that?
KATE: Does it matter? We have to stop him.
[Sawyer takes a long pause to think and shares a glance with Juliet before continuing.]
SAWYER: Sorry, I'm gonna pass.
KATE: Did you hear what I just said?
SAWYER: Yeah, I heard you. You just don't get it, Kate. We were happy in DHARMA-ville till ya'll showed up. But now that's all over. (pause) So, we're gonna drink our OJ... and take our chances in the real world. Jack wants to blow up the Island... good for Jack.
[Scene opens with a view of the hydrogen bomb. Torches light the area. Jack walks around the bomb, studying it as he goes.]
JACK: Is there anything in there about how we're supposed to move a ten ton bomb across the Island?
[Richard and Eloise watch from nearby. Sayid, sitting and reading Dan's journal, answers back.]
SAYID: Actually, it's twenty tons. Fortunately, it seems that Faraday never intended to freight the device in it's entirety.
ELOISE: What?
[Jack walks over and squats next to Sayid so he can see the journal entry Sayid is reading from.]
SAYID: He left detailed instructions on how to remove the plutonium core... and how to detonate it.
JACK: Faraday told me that we need to wipe out some kind of pocket of energy. Is part of the bomb going to be enough to do that?
SAYID: The core itself is a thermonuclear weapon. It'll be more than enough.
[Sayid closes the journal and hands it to Jack, then crosses the room to a metal box. Jack opens the journal to read for himself. Sayid slides the box across the floor closer to the bomb but is interrupted by Richard before he can open it.]
RICHARD: Hey. Hey, hey, hey... wait. We sealed that thing up twenty years ago and we put it underground because it was emitting radiation. (turns to Eloise) Does this sound like a good idea to you, Eloise?
ELOISE: Richard...
RICHARD: You're pregnant.
ELOISE: Which is exactly why we have to help them see this through.
[With this, Sayid opens the box and continues with what he was doing.]
ELOISE: Once the core is removed, then what?
SAYID: Then we have approximately two hours to take it to the Swan site.
[Jack closes the journal and rejoins the conversation.]
JACK: Two hours?
SAYID: When Faraday returned to the Island, he was very explicit about his time table.
[Sayid removes some tools from the metal box and readies to begin work on the bomb.]
JACK: Well then... we better get moving.
[At the Swan construction site.]
[A large drill is set into a hole in the ground in the center of the site. A wall of dirt encircles the work area, which is itself surrounded by the jungle. DHARMA workers scurry about, hard at work. A DHARMA van arrives on the scene. From out of the van emerges an agitated Radzinsky.]
RADZINSKY: Who stopped the damn drill?!
[Chang is standing near the drill and Radzinsky approaches him.]
CHANG: [I]I did.
RADZINSKY: Why?
CHANG: Because when we passed seventy meters the drill temp went up sixty degrees. And I didn't want it to melt.
RADZINSKY: Pierre, that's why we have a truck full of water. So cool it down and turn it on.
[Radzinsky checks the temp gauge on the drill.]
CHANG: Stuart, we just evacuated the Island of all non-essential personnel. We're in the midst of a possible insurrection. Do you really think this is the ideal time for your experiments?
RADZINSKY: I've been working on this project for six years, designing a station that'll be able to manipulate electromagnetism in ways we only dreamed of.
CHANG: Have you thought about the consequences of drilling into that pocket?! We have no idea what we have-
RADZINSKY: If Edison only was worried about the consequences we'd all still be sitting in the dark. I came to this Island to change the world, Pierre. And that's exactly what I intend to do.
[Radzinsky walks away from Pierre and over to the controls for the drill.]
RADZINSKY: Let's get it started!
[He then hits a button and the rumble of the drill coming to life is heard. An overhead view pans from where Radzinsky just started the drill, to above the drill looking down the hole, then slowly down the hole itself until the view goes dark.]
Thirty Years Later
[Scene opens with Locke, Ben, Richard, Sun and the rest of the Others marching along a rocky coastline. Waves crashing against the rocks provide a steady backdrop to the scene. At the front, walk Locke and Richard. Locke removes a canteen from his backpack, stops and holds it up to the group, signaling a stop.]
LOCKE: Take five, everybody! We still got a ways to go to get to Jacob.
[The view switches to further back in the group, where Sun is standing with Ben.]
SUN: Who's Jacob?
BEN: He's in charge of this Island.
SUN: You said John was in charge.
BEN: No, I said he was the leader. A title I've discovered is incredibly temporary. But everyone answers to someone and the leader answers to Jacob.
SUN: What's he like?
BEN: I don't know, Sun. I've never met him.
[The view switches back to where Locke and Richard are standing. Locke is drinking from his canteen and Richard sets his pack on the ground while steadily eyeing the other.]
LOCKE: You've been staring for the last ten minutes, Richard. Is there something you would like to ask me?
RICHARD: Ben told me that... he strangled you.
LOCKE: That is my recollection, yes.
[Locke takes another pull from his canteen.]
RICHARD: He said he was sure you were dead. He saw your coffin loaded onto that plane you came back on. How are you alive?
LOCKE: Well, you've been on this Island much longer than I have, Richard. If anyone should have an explanation I'd think it would be you.
RICHARD: I have-I have been here a long time, John. And I've seen things on this Island that I can barely describe but... I've never seen someone come back to life.
LOCKE: And I've never seen anyone who doesn't age... doesn't mean it can't happen.
RICHARD: I'm this way because of Jacob. If I had to guess... he's the reason you're not in that coffin anymore.
LOCKE: I agree completely, Richard. That's why I am doing this. So I can thank him.
[Locke retrieves his pack from the ground and puts his canteen in it.]
LOCKE: Once I've done that, we're gonna need to deal with the rest of the passengers from the Ajira flight that brought me here.
RICHARD: What do you mean deal with them?
LOCKE: You know what I mean.
[Richard stares back in silence as Locke shoulders his pack and turns to the rest of the group.]
LOCKE: Let's go!
[Locke begins their march again as Richard continues staring at him with an unsure look on his face.]
[Scene moves to a different part of the coast. Ilana, Bram and the other three men of their group are arriving at the shore of the main Island in the remaining outrigger canoe. Lapidus is laid out in the canoe; eyes closed and face up. The large metal crate in their possession is strapped alongside the canoe. Once reaching shore, Ilana and her group exit the canoe and push it onto the beach while Lapidus remains where he is.]
ILANA: Untie the crate.
BRAM: (indicating Lapidus) Why'd we even bring this yahoo?
[Ilana steps up on the beach next to Bram; she has a pack slung over one shoulder and is holding a rifle in one hand. Meanwhile, the other three tend to the crate.]
ILANA: Because, we might need him.
BRAM: For what? He didn't know the answer to the question.
ILANA: That doesn't mean he's not important.
BRAM: What, you think he's a candidate?
[Ilana looks down at Lapidus, who is lying motionless in the canoe. She indicates him with a canteen she has in one hand.]
ILANA: He's awake.
[Lapidus takes a breath and opens his eyes, finally giving up his ruse.]
BRAM: How long you been listenin' to us?
FRANK: Long enough to wonder what the hell I'm a candidate for.
[Lapidus struggles to sit up. Bram appears agitated when he steps over to Lapidus but instead of hurting him, grabs one of his arms and helps him up and out of the canoe to face Ilana.]
FRANK: Who the hell are you people?
ILANA: We're friends.
FRANK: So, you smack all your friends in the face with a rifle, shove 'em in a boat and kidnap 'em?
ILANA: Only the ones we like.
[Ilana now holds her rifle with both hands and Bram takes a swig from the canteen. With a smile, Bram hands the canteen to the pilot. Lapidus, wary of the other two, takes the canteen and drinks from it.]
BRAM: Let's go.
[Bram has stepped over to the crate, which has poles running the length of both sides, then with the help of the other three men, carries the crate onto the beach.]
FRANK: (to Ilana) What's in the box?
[Ilana blinks and looks over to Bram, who along with the other men set the crate down on the sand. She inquires of him with a raised eyebrow expression.]
BRAM: Your call.
[Ilana looks at Lapidus again, who simply stares back at her, then she walks over towards the crate.]
ILANA: Open it.
[The other three men open the latches holding the top on and open the crate. Ilana walks around to the other side of it and looks down at the contents inside. Lapidus steps over next to the crate to see for himself. Ilana looks up at Lapidus, who squints and stares at what has been revealed to him.]
FRANK: [I]Terrific.

[FLASHBACK]
[Scene opens with a view of a church steeple. A bell is tolling and the sound of chirping birds fill the air. The view pans down to show a group of men carrying a coffin out of the church, followed by a second group with another coffin. They pass by young James Ford standing with his uncle on their way to the hearses. He watches in silence as his parents are loaded into the back of the vehicles.]
[Scene switches to James sitting alone on the church steps. He has a notebook on his lap and is attempting to write something but stops to whack his pen against the paper, as it is low on ink. He looks up as a voice breaks the silence.]
JACOB: Need a pen, son?
SAWYER: Yeah, thanks.
[Jacob removes a pen from his inner coat pocket and gives it to James; their fingers touching in the process.]
JACOB: Here you go. You can keep it. I'm very sorry about your mother and father, James.
[Jacob offers James a consoling look, then leaves the boy alone on the steps again. Young James looks back down to the unfinished letter he had been writing when his uncle approaches.]
SAWYER'S UNCLE: Come on, Jimmy. (sigh) We gotta get to the cemetery, okay?
[James looks up at his uncle in silence.]
SAWYER'S UNCLE: What you writin'?
SAWYER: Nothin'.
[Young James' uncle takes the notebook from him and begins to read the letter anyways.]
SAWYER'S UNCLE: "Dear Mr. Sawyer, you don't know who I am but I know who you are and I know what you done."
[The uncle takes a seat next to James on the church steps and speaks to him in a comforting tone.]
SAWYER'S UNCLE: Listen to me, Jimmy. I know you're angry at the man that did this to your momma and daddy. And hell... you got every right to be. But you gotta move on, boy. They're gone... and there ain't nothin' you can do to change that. What's done is done. (pause) Now promise me you're not gonna finish that letter.
SAWYER: I promise.
SAWYER'S UNCLE: Good.
[James' uncle hands the notebook back to him.]
SAWYER'S UNCLE: Come on... let's go say goodbye.
[James' uncle puts a comforting hand on his shoulder; the two rise and leave the church together.]
[PAST]
[On the submarine.]
SAWYER: Let me get this straight. Jack sets off the nuke, which somehow... resets everything. So, Flight 815 never crashes, it just... lands in L.A. safe and sound and none of this ever happened.
KATE: Sawyer, if Jack does this he could kill everyone on the Island.
SAWYER: Yeah, I heard that part.
KATE: And you're okay with that?
SAWYER: You ain't hearin' me, Kate. (pause) I made a choice and I'm stickin' to it. I decided to leave and I'm leavin'.
[They are interrupted by Mitch arriving in the room carrying the tray of sedatives.]
MITCH: Alright, here's your sedatives.
[When Mitch sets the tray down between Juliet and Kate, Juliet grabs him around the back of the neck with her free hand, slams his forehead down on the table and knees him in the jaw. Sawyer watches in surprise as Mitch crumbles to the floor unconscious.]
SAWYER: What the hell did you just do?!
[Juliet takes Mitch's gun from his belt and looks at Sawyer.]
JULIET: We decided to leave this Island, James. We did.
[Juliet then grabs the keys from Mitch's belt.]
JULIET: And now we're going back.
[Juliet begins uncuffing herself.]
SAWYER: Are you serious?
JULIET: We can't just let those people die.
[Now free from her cuffs, Juliet stands and looks down at Sawyer.]
JULIET: You want out? You wanna stay here and whine about it?
[Sawyer looks at Kate, then back to Juliet.]
SAWYER: Unlock the damn cuffs.
[Scene switches to the bridge, where the sub captain is speaking into the comms.]
CAPTAIN BIRD: Galaga to base, the system check is complete. We're locked on to departure bearing and ready to leave the Island.
[The captain clicks off his end of the comms and a man responds through the comm speaker.]
MAN: Roger that, Galaga. Have a safe trip, see you on the return.
[When the sound of a gun cocking is heard, the captain turns to face Juliet and the gun pointed right at him. Sawyer and Kate follow her into the bridge.]
JULIET: (calmly) Give me your gun.
[When the captain doesn't react, Sawyer reaches over and takes the gun from his side.]
SAWYER: Appreciate that, Captain. Now we need you to surface the sub.
CAPTAIN BIRD: What? I can't take the sub up-
[He is interrupted by Juliet putting the gun to his neck.]
SAWYER: Oh I think you can.
JULIET: Once we're gone, proceed on course. Whatever you do, do not take those people back to the Island. Understand?
CAPTAIN BIRD: And what if Horace tries to contact me, hmm? What am I supposed to say?
[Sawyer shoots the comms, creating a bright flash of sparks as it shorts out.]
SAWYER: You ain't home.
JULIET: (motions with the gun) Go.
[The captain turns to the control panel, spins a couple of knobs and prepares to surface. An alarm blares. From an underwater view, the bow planes on the submarine angle upward and the vessel begins to rise.]
[Jack holds up a backpack to Sayid, who is wearing large gloves while working on removing the core from the hydrogen bomb.]
JACK: Sayid, is this big enough?
SAYID: That'll do.
[Many oil lamps sit on crates around the bomb, providing light for Sayid to work by. Eloise and Richard wait nearby. Jack walks over to Sayid and sets the pack on a crate next to him.]
JACK: Are you done with Faraday's journal?
SAYID: Take it.
[Jack takes the journal to the other side of the room and hunkers down to study it. Richard chooses a sledgehammer from a few that are leaning against a column and walks over towards Jack, then checks the clip on his pistol. Sayid carefully removes the core from the hydrogen bomb. Richard, now squatting next to Jack, queries him.]
RICHARD: Can I ask you a question?
JACK: Sure.
RICHARD: Over, uh... twenty years ago... a man named John Locke... he walked right into our camp and he told me that he was gonna be our leader. Now, I've gone off the Island three times since then. To visit him. But he never seemed um... particularly special to me.
JACK: You said you had a question.
RICHARD: You know him, Locke?
JACK: (smiles) Yeah. Yeah, I know him. (pause) And if I were you... I wouldn't give up on him.
[PRESENT]
[Richard leads the group of Others as they continue marching along the coast towards their destination. Locke makes his way into the middle of the group to walk alongside Ben.]
LOCKE: Why haven't you told him yet?
BEN: Told who what?
LOCKE: Richard. Why haven't you told him about my plans for Jacob?
BEN: If by plans you mean murdering him, John, I assumed you want to keep that a secret.
LOCKE: (amused) When did that ever stop you?
BEN: Well, I started thinking differently about things when my dead daughter threatened to destroy me if I didn't do everything you said.
LOCKE: W-wait, wait...
[Locke moves in front of Ben and stops him with an outstretched hand.]
LOCKE: Where did this happen?
BEN: In that cavern beneath the Temple. When we went to see the Monster.
LOCKE: So... you're willing to do whatever I say, no matter what it is?
[Ben breaks Locke's gaze and looks down and away.]
BEN: (quietly) Yes.
LOCKE: (smiles) Well, then... I guess I won't have to convince you after all.
BEN: Convince me to do what?
[Locke had turned to continue walking but stops and looks at Ben again.]
LOCKE: I'm not gonna kill Jacob, Ben... you are.
[Ben's face is blank as Locke gives him a serious glare. Locke then turns and starts walking again, leaving a speechless Ben behind him.]
[cut to commercial]
[FLASHBACK]
[Scene opens with an overhead view of cars driving through a city intersection. The view switches to street level to show Sayid and Nadia walking together along the sidewalk.]
SAYID: Paris or Rome.
NADIA: No. (laughs)
SAYID: Florence?
NADIA: It doesn't matter...
SAYID: Yes it does.
NADIA: ...as long as we're together.
SAYID: It's our anniversary. We have to find the perfect place.
NADIA: I would settle for finding my sunglasses.
[As they reach the intersection, the light changes to green and shows the walk symbol. The two begin crossing the street through the crosswalk, when a voice stops Sayid.]
JACOB: Excuse me, sir. Could you help me?
[Jacob, holding a piece of paper, walks over to Sayid and they converse on the side of the street.]
JACOB: I'm sorry. I think I'm lost. Are you from Los Angeles?
SAYID: What are you looking for?
[From the middle of the crosswalk, Nadia looks back at Sayid, produces her sunglasses from her bag and holds them up.]
NADIA: (cheerfully) I found them!
[When Sayid turns to look, an SUV screeches to a halt and runs into Nadia. Sayid watches in horror as Jacob puts a hand on his shoulder. Nadia goes tumbling onto the street from the impact of the vehicle. Sayid runs towards the SUV but it speeds away with the occupants unrevealed. Nadia lies motionless in the street and Sayid rushes to her side.]
SAYID: Nadia? Nadia?
[Nadia weakly responds in her native tongue.]
NADIA: Take me home. Take me home.
[Sayid holds Nadia and breaks down into tears as an ambulance siren can be heard in the background.]
[PAST]
[In the tunnels.]
[As the other three watch from nearby, Sayid carefully wraps the core of the hydrogen bomb, puts it in his pack and shoulders it.]
SAYID: Time is short. Let's go.
[Richard with Eloise leads the way through the tunnels with an oil lamp to light the area in one hand and a sledgehammer in the other; Jack carries another oil lamp and trails with Sayid. Richard reaches a rock wall, sets the lamp and hammer down, then taps along the wall wit his knuckles until he finds a specific spot.]
RICHARD: Stand back.
[After retrieving the sledgehammer, Richard takes a big swing and cracks into the rock wall. With another five swings, he opens a hole leading into another room, then sets the sledgehammer down and reaches into his back pocket for his pistol. Jack peers inside and sees a set of stairs leading up.]
JACK: It's one of the DHARMA houses. I'll go first.
ELOISE: Jack, don't misunderstand who's in charge here. I'll go first. Because if someone in that house is a threat, you might hesitate.
[Eloise chambers a bullet in her pistol.]
ELOISE: But I won't.
RICHARD: Alright. Okay. Eloise, go on. After you.
[Eloise looks back at Sayid.]
ELOISE: Once we give you the all clear, then you bring the bomb.
[Sayid nods in affirmation, then Eloise turns to go through the hole.]
ELOISE: We don't want any accidents.
[Richard suddenly pistol whips Eloise in the back of the head. As she falls unconscious, Richard catches her in his arms.]
JACK: What the hell are you doing?
[Richard holds Eloise with one hand and aims his pistol at Jack with the other.]
RICHARD: I'm protecting our leader. Get back.
[Jack and Sayid both take a step back.]
RICHARD: She's gonna be angry when she wakes up but... that's alot better than being dead. She ordered me to help you. We helped you. Now you're on your own. I'm taking her out the way we came in.
[Jack takes a look through the hole, then back to Sayid.]
SAYID: After you.
[Jack goes first, followed by Sayid, while Richard watches them go.]
[Upstairs, the door leading to the basement opens and Jack then Sayid walk through; both with their pistols in hand. The barracks alarm blares in the background. They walk down a hallway and into the living room. Voices and bustling activity can be heard outside.]
MAN: (over the speakers) [I]All residents, we are in a code black. Report with your weapons to your security assignment immediately.
[Jack walks over to a window and peers out to see all the DHARMA folk hastily moving about. Sayid checks out a different window.]
MAN: (over the speakers) If you come into contact with a Hostile, you are authorized to use deadly force.
[Jack and Sayid abandon the windows to confer in the middle of the room.]
JACK: How the hell are we gonna get out of here?
[Sayid pauses to think, then looks over to see one of Horace's jumpsuits hanging from a rack on the wall.]
SAYID: We hide in plain sight.
[Sayid grabs the jumpsuit from the wall.]
[Scene shifts to outside. Sayid and Jack march along through the crowd trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. Scene briefly shows Phil giving out orders to some security men.]
PHIL: ...set a perimeter around the barracks first. You go over there by the gate. You get to...
[Jack and Sayid continue along, unnoticed as of yet.]
PHIL: ...so, you guys go. You go to the pylons...
[Jack and Sayid make it through the center of the crowd and near the edge of the houses before being spotted by Roger Linus.]
ROGER: Hey. Hey!
[Roger raises his rifle, cocks it and aims at Sayid and Jack. Sayid comes to a stop and holds both arms up.]
ROGER: You're the son of a bitch who shot my kid.
SAYID: Don't fire that weapon.
[Jack cocks his pistol and readies for the worst.]
SAYID: I'm carrying a nuclear de-
[Roger fires and catches Sayid in the gut with the shot, causing him to go down to his knees in pain. Jack angrily raises his pistol and fires back. Roger takes cover behind a tree as Jack continuously fires. Most of the DHARMA people run to hide but some raise guns to return fire. One comes running from behind a house with rifle raised but Jack takes him down. Jack rushes over to Sayid, helps him up and over behind a house, still shooting in the process. After setting Sayid in a seated position against the house, Jack reloads his pistol and peeks around the corner at the gunfire still aimed their way. Deciding to make a run for it, Jack gets Sayid up and helps him along with his free arm. Emerging from their hiding spot, he fires again, taking out another DHARMA person and causing the rest to scurry for cover. Jack turns to run when a DHARMA van comes speeding onto the scene. The van rushes to a stop next to Jack and Sayid, then the side door comes sliding open, revealing Jin inside.]
JIN: Get in!
[With a joyous grin, Jack lunges into the van with Sayid.]
JACK: Drive!
[Hurley is driving the van and gasses the motor to make their escape. The side door slams shut as bullets ricochet off the outside of the vehicle. Sayid lies in the back bleeding heavily from his gut shot. The rear window of the van gets shot out but the group still manages to hastily ride away from the gunfire.]

[Off the shore.]
[The top of the submarine is shown headed out to sea. The view pans right to show Sawyer, Juliet and Kate aboard a zodiac raft paddling through the water. The view switches to behind them, showing the Island ahead of them in the distance.]
SAWYER: From the looks of the sun, I'd say that's the north shore over there.
[Juliet takes a look back at the departing sub, watching as the last of the top submerges underwater.]
KATE: Sun's over there. That's gotta be the west coast.
SAWYER: (sarcastically) Really? What, you got a compass?
KATE: No, do you?
[Juliet turns back towards the Island with a look of sorrow on her face.]
[Scene switches to the beach, where the three carry the raft ashore. After setting the raft down, Sawyer grabs his rifle and looks into the jungle. Towards the back of the raft, Kate looks across the other side to Juliet.]
KATE: Thank you.
JULIET: For what?
KATE: For backing me up at the sub.
JULIET: No problem.
SAWYER: I got no idea where the hell we are.
[A barking dog is heard and Vincent comes charging out of the jungle towards the trio.]
SAWYER: Vincent! C'mere!
[Sawyer kneels and Vincent comes running up to him.]
SAWYER: (joyfully petting Vincent) Hey! Hey! How you doin' boy?! I ain't seen you since the flamin' arrows three years ago.
[Vincent steps over to Juliet for a moment.]
JULIET: Hi.
[Juliet gives Vincent a quick rub.]
JULIET: How'd he survive alone out here?
[A voice speaks up and causes the trio to look up.]
ROSE: Aw hell no.
[Rose is standing on the beach at the edge of the jungle; she calls back.]
ROSE: Bernard!
[Bernard comes running out of the jungle with a walking stick and comes to a stop next to Rose. Sawyer, Kate and Juliet share a joyous laugh at the reunion.]
ROSE: (to Bernard) They found us.
[Sawyer, Kate and Juliet begin walking up the beach to their long lost companions, who just stare back at them with less joy.]
BERNARD: Son of a bitch.
[The DHARMA van being driven by Hurley speeds along a dirt road. Inside, Jin takes the bomb and sets it aside as Jack tends to Sayid's wound. Miles, sitting in the front passenger seat, looks back to the scene happening behind him.]
MILES: Is that a bomb?!
JACK: (to Sayid) Try not to move. I need to stop the bleeding.
HURLEY: What's going on back there? Is Sayid okay?
MILES: Does he look okay?! Just keep your eyes on the damn road!
[Jack pushes down with a cloth on Sayid's wound as the injured man trembles in pain.]
HURLEY: Should I pull over?
MILES: (sarcastically) Yeah. Let's pull over and get shot. (seriously) Just drive!
HURLEY: I don't know where we're going.
JACK: The Swan site. Head to the Swan.
HURLEY: Why do you wanna go there? If Sayid's shot-
JACK: Hurley! If you wanna save Sayid, take us to the Swan.
HURLEY: The Swan it is.
JIN: Jack, what's at the Swan?
JACK: I think I found a way to get you back to your wife.
[Jin stares intently at Jack after this statement. The van is shown again from the outside continuing to speed along towards it's destination.]
[In a different part of the jungle.]
[Rose and Bernard lead Sawyer, Juliet and Kate with Vincent tagging along.]
SAWYER: So, hold on... you're tellin' me, you just been livin' out here in the jungle for the past three years, by yourselves?
ROSE: Uh-huh.
SAWYER: I'm sorry ya'll got left behind. Didn't you hear me shout out "meet at the creek"?
BERNARD: There were flaming arrows raining down around us. Killing everyone we knew. Oh sure, we heard you.
SAWYER: We spent all sorts of time lookin' for ya. I had Jin out... searchin' the Island grid by grid.
[Rose and Bernard come to a stop and face the other three.]
ROSE: Yeah, we know.
JULIET: You know?
ROSE: Oh, sure. You guys all joined up with the DHARMA Initiative.
SAWYER: Well, damn. I coulda brought both of ya'll in. Why didn't you find a way to tell us you were out here?
ROSE: Because we're retired.
[Sawyer and Juliet look over to Bernard, who simply smiles and nods.]
[Scene switches to Rose and Bernard's camp. Sawyer picks up a can of DHARMA green beans from a table and looks at it for a moment before setting it back down.]
SAWYER: So ya'll been scavengin' food and livin' out in a hut by yourselves?
[Rose and Bernard's camp is in a small clearing. A hut sits at the edge of the area. A few tables and shelves with various foodstuffs on them litter the clearing as well.]
BERNARD: People try their whole lives to get themselves a nice, quiet place near the ocean where they can live in peace. And we did it. That's what we made for ourselves.
[Rose smiles lovingly at Bernard.]
SAWYER: Well, I hate to rain on your parade but... condo is about to go kablooey.
[Kate speaks up from where she is sitting on a crate removing her jumpsuit.]
KATE: Jack has a bomb.
ROSE: Who cares.
KATE: Excuse me?
ROSE: It's always something with you people. Now you say, Jack's got a bomb. And what, you guys are all gonna try to stop him, right?
KATE: Yeah, that's right.
ROSE: We traveled back thirty years in time and you're [I]still trying to find ways to shoot each other?
JULIET: Rose, we just need to know which way the DHARMA barracks are from here, so we can stop Jack. Or, you're gonna be dead. We all will.
BERNARD: (shrugs) So we die. (looks at Rose) We just care about being together. (pause) That's all that matters in the end.
ROSE: The barracks are five miles... (points toward the jungle) that way.
[Sawyer steps over and shakes Bernard's hand.]
SAWYER: Bernard.
BERNARD: Sawyer.
[Sawyer then grasps Rose's hand.]
SAWYER: Rose.
KATE: Thank you.
SAWYER: Let's go.
[Sawyer and Kate start making their way out of camp. Juliet gives a small wave and whispers a quiet farewell before leaving but stops when Bernard inquires of her.]
BERNARD: You sure you don't want some tea?
[Juliet smiles slightly and puts a hand to her stomach before responding.]
JULIET: Maybe another time.
[Juliet then turns and departs. Bernard quietly watches her go.]
[In a different part of the jungle.]
[Ilana leads the group through the jungle with her rifle on the ready. Bram and the other three guys carry the large crate on it's poles. Lapidus walks alongside Bram, who has a pole in one hand and his rifle in the other.]
FRANK: I wish you'd never showed me what was in this damned box. What the hell are you gonna do with it anyways?
BRAM: We need to show it to somebody.
FRANK: What for?
BRAM: So they'll know who they're up against.
FRANK: What exactly are they up against?
BRAM: Something a helluva lot scarier than what's in this box, Frank. Don't worry, though. As long as you're with us, you're fine.
FRANK: That'd be reassuring if I knew who you were, friend.
BRAM: We're the good guys.
FRANK: In my experience, the people who go out of their way to tell you they're the good guys are the bad guys.
[In front, Ilana brings the group to a halt.]
ILANA: We're here.
[Bram and the other guys set the crate down. An old, broken down looking cabin comes into view. Ilana and Bram approach cautiously with their rifles. They come upon a line of ash on the ground circling the cabin. Bram looks down and notices the circle has been broken.]
BRAM: Look at the ash!
[Ilana sharply turns her head and sees the same thing.]
ILANA: Wait here.
[She cautiously steps over the ash and proceeds towards the cabin.]
[FLASHBACK]
[Scene opens with a close-up of Ilana's eye. Her face is mostly wrapped in bandages and the eye slowly opens. The view pans back to show injured patients lying around an old hospital-type room. A nurse wheels a trolley across the room to the figure lying in bed with the bandaged face. She removes a food tray from the trolley and sets it down on a table next to the bed.]
NURSE: (in Russian) How are you feeling? Are you thirsty?
[The nurse sits on the bedside with a beverage and puts a straw to the Ilana's lips so she can drink. One eye and her mouth are all that's showing of her bandaged face.]
NURSE: (in Russian) There's someone here to see you. I explained your condition... but he insisted on seeing you anyway. You've had no visitors. It will be good for you.
[The nurse stands and nods to the visitor before leaving. Jacob walks over, moves a chair next to the bed and takes a seat.]
JACOB: (in Russian) I'm sorry I couldn't make it sooner.
ILANA: (in Russian) I'm very happy to see you...
[Jacob pauses, then continues in English.]
JACOB: I'm here because I need your help.
[Ilana looks at him with the one eye but does not respond. Jacob leans in closer.]
JACOB: Can you do that? (pause) Will you help me Ilana?
ILANA: (softly) Yes.
[PAST]
[The view is from inside the cabin. The door slowly creaks open and Ilana enters. The place is a mess. Ilana looks around, surveying the room as the door clatters shut behind her. She spies the painting of the dog lying sideways on the floor and leaning up against the wall. Looking up, she sees the same knife Jacob was using in the opening scene stabbed through a piece of cloth and into the wall. After setting her rifle down on the table, she pulls the knife out of the wall and grabs the cloth to study.]
[Scene shifts to outside the cabin. Ilana exits the door with her rifle in hand and walks over to Bram and Lapidus.]
BRAM: What happened?
ILANA: He isn't there. Hasn't been in a long time. Someone else has been using it.
[Bram stares at Ilana and Lapidus raises his eyebrows in curiosity.]
ILANA: (to the others in her group) Burn it!
[Ilana steps past Bram while the other men move towards the cabin.]
FRANK: (to Bram) I'm no tree-hugger but uh... that's a pretty good way to torch the jungle, don't ya think?
[The other men light Molotov cocktails and toss them in the cabin, which begins to go up quick. Bram does not answer Lapidus but instead, moves over to where Ilana is standing.]
BRAM: So what now?
[Ilana gives him a wary look and removes the piece of cloth from her bag; handing it to Bram. Looking down at it, he sees a picture of the statue next to the ocean and the Island mountains. The sound of the cabin burning is steadily building.]
BRAM: Well, I guess we know where we're going.
[The cabin is now fully engulfed in fire; the roar of flames pervading the jungle around them. Lapidus watches the cabin burn. Ilana gives a wave for the group to move out. When Bram and the other three men get the crate, the group departs, leaving the burning cabin behind.]

[FLASHBACK]
[Scene opens with a close-up of an open book. The title reads FLANNERY O'CONNOR. Underneath that is a picture of a white dove being struck in the chest with an arrow. Below the dove reads, EVERYTHING THAT RISES MUST CONVERGE. The view pans back to reveal Jacob sitting on a bench reading the book. People walk through the plaza around him. Behind the bench is a row of plants. A building with large, stone columns sets the backdrop. A shattering of glass is heard, followed by a falling body that makes a loud thud when it hits the ground behind Jacob. He calmly closes his book, stands and walks towards where John Locke's body lies partly on the sidewalk and partly on the grass. A distressed on-looker shouts "Oh my god! Call 911!". Upon reaching Locke, Jacob kneels down next to him. Locke is unconscious and his face is bloodied. After a moment of gazing down at him, Jacob reaches out with one hand and grips Locke's shoulder. With a sharp inhalation of breath, Locke opens his eyes.]
JACOB: Don't worry, everything's gonna be alright.
[Locke looks around in confusion; trying to focus on the face above him.]
JACOB: I'm sorry this happened to you.
[Jacob stands and leaves the injured Locke lying on the ground.]
[PRESENT]
[Locke leads the group of Others with Richard, Ben and Sun in front with him. They round a clump of bushes and arrive at the 815 survivors' original beach camp.]
SUN: This is our old camp.
LOCKE: Home sweet home.
[Locke comes to a stop and faces the group.]
LOCKE: Alright, everyone. Richard tells me we should get to where we're going by nightfall. So, why don't you all take this opportunity to rest up and catch your breath. Considering what I got planned for ya, you're gonna need it.
[Locke removes his backpack and everyone else follows suit; finding places to sit and rest.]
[Scene switches to Ben sitting on the beach by himself and staring out at sea. Locke walks over to him.]
LOCKE: Everything alright?
BEN: I was enjoying some alone time.
[Locke smiles and takes a seat next to him.]
LOCKE: You see what's behind ya?
[Ben looks over at Locke, turns and looks behind him to see the mangled hatch door with the quarantine on it, then back out to sea.]
BEN: (sarcastically) It's a door. How about that.
LOCKE: Not just a door, Ben. It's the door to the Hatch, where you and I first met.
[Ben glances at Locke, then again returns his gaze to the ocean.]
LOCKE: You mind if I ask you a question?
BEN: (sarcastically) I'm a Pisces.
[Locke smiles in response, then continues.]
LOCKE: What happened that day at the cabin? When you first took me to meet Jacob?
BEN: Well, you clearly already know that I was talking to an empty chair, John. (pause) That I was pretending. (pause) Which is not to say that I wasn't surprised as you were... when things started flying around in the room.
LOCKE: But why would you go to all the trouble to make something like that up?
BEN: I was embarrassed. I didn't want you to know that I had never seen Jacob. (pause) So, yes, I lied. That's what I do.
[Ben finally returns Locke's gaze for a moment, before once again returning his stare to sea.]
LOCKE: Alright then.
[Locke stands to leave Ben alone again but stops when Ben continues the conversation.]
BEN: Why do you want me to kill Jacob, John?
[Locke peers down at Ben, then squats next to him before answering.]
LOCKE: Because... despite your loyal service to this Island, you got cancer. You had to watch your own daughter gunned down right in front of you. And your reward for all those sacrifices? You got banished.
[When Ben looks at John, the pain in his face is visible.]
LOCKE: And you did all this in the name of a man you'd never even met. (pause) So, the question is, Ben... why the hell wouldn't you wanna kill Jacob?
[The agony in Ben's face is all the answer Locke needs, because he then stands and walks away.]
[Scene switches to Sun walking through the camp. She passes a tent and the baby cradle that Locke built for Aaron comes into her view. She walks over to the cradle, which is half-broken and turned on it's side. After setting her pack down, she squats next to the cradle and turns it right side up. Looking down into the cradle with a slight smile, she notices a glint of metal. Reaching in and picking it up, she discovers Charlie's ring. Holding it in both hands, she looks closely at it and reminisces.]
[FLASHBACK]
[Scene opens with a close-up of Sun's hands holding Jin's wedding band. The view pans up to show her face. She is in her wedding dress and wearing a white veil.]
SUN: (in Korean) I have loved you... since the day we first met.
[Jin is standing right in front of her wearing a nice suit and facing her.]
SUN: (in Korean) I'll love the man you will become... as we spend our lives together.
[The view pans back to show Sun and Jin's wedding ceremony. They are outside, with a temple in the background. Many people sit in lawn chairs watching the two recite their vows.]
SUN: (in Korean) With this ring... I make my promises.
[Sun takes Jin's hand and slides the ring on his finger. The two smile lovingly at each other. Jin takes a glance out at the audience, before looking back to Sun.]
JIN: (in Korean) I wrote mine down.
[Sun smiles in response, then Jin unfolds a piece of paper to read from.]
JIN: (in Korean) We will never be apart. Because being apart from you would be... like the sky being apart from the earth.
[When Jin removes Sun's wedding ring from his pocket, Sun offers her hand to him.]
JIN: (in Korean) With this ring...
[The view shows a close-up of Jin gently sliding the ring on her finger.]
JIN: (in Korean) I make my promises.
[Sun admires her ring for a moment, then looks back up to Jin, who steps close and kisses his new bride. A gentle murmur of approval and applause comes from the audience.]
[Scene switches to later in the day. Sun has changed from her wedding dress to a nice blue gown. They are accepting blessings from the people who have attended their wedding.]
SUN: (in Korean) Auntie!
[An elder Korean woman steps up to them.]
SUN'S AUNT: (in Korean) So when are you going to start a family?
SUN: (in Korean) Maybe on our honeymoon.
[Sun's aunt smiles, laughs and pats Jin on the shoulder, then takes her leave. Jacob, who is next in line, steps up to offer his blessing.]
JACOB: (in Korean) I'd like to offer you my blessing. Your love is a very special thing.
[Jacob then reaches up with both arms, touching Jin's arm with his left hand and Sun's arm with his right.]
JACOB: (in Korean) Never take it for granted.
[After the three share a bow, Jacob departs. Sun leans over to Jin and inquires.]
SUN: (in Korean) Who was that?
[Jin watches Jacob depart through the crowd, then turns back to Sun with his response.]
JIN: (in Korean) I don't know, but... his Korean is excellent.
[PAST]
[In the jungle.]
[The stolen DHARMA van continues speeding along the dirt road towards the Swan site. Inside, Jack continues applying pressure to Sayid's wound; trying to stop the bleeding.]
JACK: How much further?
HURLEY: Uh... we're about five minutes away.
[Sayid looks up from his wound to Jack.]
SAYID: You can't stop the bleeding.
JACK: (to Jin) We need fresh dressings.
MILES: Jack! So, this bomb is supposed to what, blow us back in time?
JACK: We're not going back in time.
[Jack tears a piece of fresh cloth to apply to Sayid's wound.]
MILES: Right. 'Cause that would be ridiculous.
SAYID: I need to modify the bomb. I can rig it so it detonates on impact. Jack, we need to be there at the moment of the Incident. Or this will be for nothing.
[Jack nods at Sayid when suddenly Hurley stomps on the brakes and the van skids to a stop.]
JACK: Why the hell are we stopping?
[Hurley looks out the front windshield and points.]
HURLEY: That's why.
[Jack, Jin and Miles all look forward to see what is in front of the van. There stands Sawyer, with rifle in hand, flanked on either side by Kate and Juliet with pistols. Sawyer stares hard at the group in the van, intent on not letting them pass.]
