View Full Version : Tapatalk for iPhone/iPod Touch, and now for ANDROID!
I have mentioned in the past that I've been working on a mobile style for MyMedia. I've run into a lot of issues due to the complexity of the forum, but along the way, I stumbled into something that will help iPhone users, until I get some workarounds in place for a real Mobile style.
In a very short time (days, supposedly), the Tapatalk (http://www.tapatalk.com/) app for iPhone (and iPod Touch?) will be released to the public via the App Store. The cost of the app is supposed to be $2.99, and will enable a very iPhone-native way to browse the forum. A few minutes ago, I installed the software on the server and registered with their network of sites (http://tapatalk.com/directory/directory).
Keep your eyes peeled. The new App is due to launch any day.
I haven't paid for an app yet but I am curious on how this would work for the forums. There definitely need to be an easier way for posting purposes

Ooh yay, just in time for my new phone purchase.
I got an email stating that Apple delayed the launch of the new app. I'm just guessing that it might have something to do with the impending release of iPhone OS 3.0.
Hey John !!!!
It works!!!!!!

It adds a sig line LOL

Yeah, I can't take that out, apparently.
Why can't I find it on iTunes?
It's not available yet. Apple delayed the release again, but the folks writing the software provided me with one pre-release installation per forum. I installed one and passed the other to Sals.
(I moved these posts to the Tapatalk thread.)
Ahhh. I see. I got all excited.
Well, it's still got some issues. I was unable to browse MyMedia last night, but MyPolitics worked fine.

I got the new version...I'll install it later, thanks pal :)
So will this app allow us to access chat? Is that even possible? How about our Profile Pages? Can we write/reply to PMs and VMs?
BTW....HFD to you !

I don't know if there's any plan to make profile pages accessible, but I'll certainly mention it. Chat is probably out. Chat isn't part of vB, and this product is intended to be a portal to vB. Even if it did have an interface, the chat we use here doesn't work on iPhone.
Tapatalk has been released to the iTunes App Store at a cost of $2.99. Due to requirements by Apple, there can be no discussion of jailbreaking phones on the Tapatalk network. For that reason, I have moved all iPhone/iPod threads to this new forum, which is blocked from the Tapatalk plugin.
Even though the app has been released, I would recommend that you delay purchase until a couple bugs are resolved. The first bug, which I just reported, is that load times are ridiculous for large sub-forums. Until that is resolved you're better off browsing the site without the app. The second bug "fail to submit new topic / reply to existing post" occurs when browsing via 3G. There's currently a server-side workaround that I'm investigating. The bug will also be fixed in the next release of Tapatalk.
Here are some screenshots of what you can expect to see here at MyMedia:

There may be some minor interface tweaks as things develop, including a possibility of different icons to replace the "microphone" icon.
Other enhancements that have been requested include:
quote
search
edit
go to first unread post
youtube embedding
The list goes on. Right now, I think this app is only mature enough to be usable for those lurking or posting in short threads.

Still, looks pretty slick.
The performance issues have apparently been resolved in v1.1.5, which I believe sals has installed on his phone. My last installation was done from the app store, so I'm only running v1.1.0, proving once more that when compared to sals, I'm just inadequate.
v1.2 will fix a few items, and at that point, I think it would be something worth checking out, if you're equipped with the required hardware.
Very cool. It does look slick and user-friendly. Great job.
I just updated the Tapatalk software on both sites. I have not seen an update on iTunes yet, but that might have something to do with an issue that came up on my phone during the testing phase with non-released versions of the app.
I just installed the latest Tapatalk update to the site. I guess I missed one or two. (Oops) The latest update will support all Tapatalk features, including the features available in the next Tapatalk App update.
The Tapatalk plugin has been updated again, and since I haven't used it in a while, it appears that there are some new features. I don't know how new all of them are, though. :D
In other news, it looks like there's an Andriod version coming.

*droid* :D
Reading the email again, the android version is already available via the Andriod Market for FREE due to the beta status.

I'd love to be able to access via my Android. How do I get this done?? Remember I'm barely able to run either my computer or the phone . . .
Thanks.
Go to the Android Marketplace and install Tapatalk. It's free right now because it's in Beta. I put it on my Droid Eris and it's really simple to use.
ETA - I think it's in Multimedia, but I just do a search from the droid marketplace main page for "Tapatalk" and it comes right up. That's probably the easiest way to find it. You have to do it from your phone. Once it comes up, just click "Install". It takes less than 30 seconds. Once it's on there, go to your programs and open it up. Once it's open, it's just like a web browser. Just type in either this forum, or the Politics, URL and it should save to your favorites, or at least it did for me. Your mileage may vary. :)

Okay - did that. Still don't know how to access the forum through that app . . .
(sorry)
Did you see my ETA?
Open Tapatalk, select "Search", then type in "MyMedia". It should bring up "MyMedia-Forum.com". Once it does, just click on that and the forum will open up, albeit much more streamlined, on your screen. You're just "guest@MyMedia-Forum.com" until you login. Then you can check PMs and post. As "guest" you can't do anything except browse.
I just checked the location of both sites in their network. MyMedia is in Entertainment and MyPolitics is in Society and Culture.
Ha!

Cool. Knowing the categories makes it a little easier, but I'm too lazy to scroll through them all so I just searched. :)

Okay I found it - lovely! Another silly question - I'm looking at Brian's last post on my phone - but I can't figure out how to post from the phone. . .
I just thought it was cool that MyMedia appeared in one of the Android screenshots on their site. :)

Due to Apple restrictions, the iPhone forum on this site is not available through Tapatalk. They don't like any sort of discussion about jailbreaking and hacking and all that sort of fun stuff. I don't know if that is translated to the Andriod version or not.

i think I got it!

Yep, that's it. :)
Oh, and as far as I know, there's no way to get rid of that silly signature in your post until you edit it out from your computer.

trying again

Well, that answers that. Either I messed up the forum restriction last time I upgraded, or Andriod can see through the restriction placed on iPhones.
Yeah, I can see it as well. It comes up under "Recent" and "Forums".

Hah! That pleases me - thanks for your help guys. I just had to hit an extra button to find a reply box.
Interesting. On iPhone, the forum doesn't show, but this thread shows up in recent posts. Hmm...

Buying an Android phone right now worth it? Is it worth buying an Android phone right now such as the Motorola Cliq? I heard from some people that Android phones with more powerful processors and upgraded system is coming in the future. Is it worth investing in the Android phones coming out right now, or is it smart to wait for the "next-generation" Android phones. My plan expires in less than a month so I have to make my decision cleverly.

I got an email stating the following:
A small update from the client side - we have submitted an updated version to Apple with the annoying Tapatalk Signature to be turned off by default. We realize that it's getting too annoying in larger forums. We have also released an Android update that allow users to turn off the signature.
Finally. I hate that little message. Goodbye, little message.

Sweet.

Installed the update for Droid this morning that finally lets you turn off the signature as well. About time.
