I really enjoyed this episode, it is FULL of little things for us to scrutinize over, like Danielle's maps and the Whispers (which I've seen SO many different transcriptions of).

Here are my notes for my first runthru of Season One for this episode:

LOST Season One - Episode 9 - Solitary
Sayid backstory #1

No Eye shot to open - Sayid looking at Nadias pics, we see the headshot, as he looks at the pic of her in LA (which we don't see til later in The Greater Good)
Sayid notices cable buried on beach - follows in inland.
QUESTION: Whats at either end of the cable? We never see.
The small silver piece of metal that Sayid sees to discover the cable is, as far as I can see, the only piece that looks like that on it, rest of cable is wrapped in black casing - meant to see it, or just a break in the casing?
Day 11 - Kate says it's been 2 days since Sayid took off on his own,
could be Day 10, but i think not....?
Sayid steps over tripwire and steps on clicking plate that releases noose
Redshirt has rash/hives.
Credits alert me that this is the first ETHAN appearance. Lets see where it is.

DANIELLE AND SAYID -
she asks him in MANY languages "Where is Alex?" - so Danielle is multilingual then?
Sayid thought the wire related to the transmission - last reference to this wire til Hurley finds it in Numbers
she doesnt believe his story "I know what you are" she says, not WHO you are.
THEORY - could that be a clue as to that the "others" are really just child stealing pirates/slave traders off of African coast even???
Sayid- Alex, who is HE? and danielle shoots him this look like is he messing with me or does he really not know?
Sayid says Nadia is dead because of him? WTF?!?!?!
Rousseau's husband = Robert
The SOURCE of the Transmission and The BLACK ROCK:
the transmission broadcasts from somewhere else, but "they" control it now
"you and the others like you" - the coining of the phrase the "others"
Part of a science team, a science team armed with rifles, vessel was 3 days out of Tahiti when instruments malfunctioned (same as 815 scenario), it was night, a storm, the sounds, the ship slammed into rocks and ran aground, the hull breached beyond repair, they dug out shelter Danielle is in, survived nearly 2 months until...(unfinished sentence) - Lets see how our LOSTaways are doing in 2 months! - coming back from black rock, it was "them", "they" were the carriers, the "others" - sayid asks what others and what is the black rock, but danielle doesnt answer those questions, just this one "have you seen other people on this island?". she says no, i hear them whisper, sayid thinks shes crazy.
"you need me" danielle to sayid "if were lucky its one of the bears"
"theres no such thing as monsters" (noises heard NOT monster)
QUESTION - just what is this "sickness"? The quote "THEY were the CARRIERS" makes me think it was a condition meant to be passed on intentionally. I kinda remember Danielle referring to her crewman Montan? getting the sickness before he lost his arm, or something like that; but whatever it is, Danielle felt it infected her crew and husband enough to kill them all - maybe it's DANIELLE that's infected, and her crew was fine, she just went NUTS!! I don't know......any thoughts?

FB 1 - sayid tortures someone, he sees Nadia walk by in custody
FIRST ETHAN APPEARANCE - returns from scouring jungle with LOCKE.
They return with bags and greet Hurley - one of which contains the golf stuff for Hurley. Ethan on hunting at night "best time to hunt". Locke says Ethan has experience hunting - so did Locke ask Ethan SOME questions while they were hunting, or did he just assume Ethan's knowledge of hunting by his skills and knowledge? Walt wants to go out hunting with Locke.

FB 2 - sayid grills nadia for the first time

Mike tells Walt to find a way to entertain himself - not a good idea if you ask me
Mike builds irrigation system

FB 3 - more grilling
FB 4 - sayid takes nadia to her execution - these FBs are doing nothing for me here, just expanding Sayid's character a little

Walt is pissed Mike left him alone at the caves while he went to play golf

FB 5 - sayid frees nadia

Danielle removed firing pin sayid didnt notice, neither did Robert when she shot him - "he was sick" say danielle, "it took them, one after the other, they were already LOST" - "What would have happened if we were rescued?" she asks.
she knows sayid isn't "sick"
sayid holding on for 7 years for nadia (reference for timeline)
"watch your people closely" - danielles warning to sayid - I haven't noticed Sayid "watching" anyone for "sickness", have you? All I see is him tryin to get down Shannon's pants. :evil
Alex was danielle's child/daughter (see exodus 2)
We never see if Jack sinks his putt or not
Locke having taget practice on a tree, gives Walt the knife to try
THE WHISPERS: i heard "should we help him" spoken by a woman, all else was really hard to hear with wind gushes.

QUESTION - Can anyone reccommend a good audio program I can use to extract the audio from my vid file(avi), chop it up, and filter out the hissing of the wind?

Now here's one of the more interesting screencaps I took from this:

img163.imageshack.us/img1...ap34yw.jpg (http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/2457/map34yw.jpg)

I think the folded map on the right is the one we saw on the Oceanic site - but is the main map OUR ISLAND?
I would think that if she WAS trapped for 16 years, that Danielle would've explored every inch of the island, mapped it, and retaied a pretty good knowledge of where everything MAJOR was - like Black Rock, Radio Tower, The Volcano(?).

Anyways, 90 min til showtime. Til after....
Peace,
Truffula

The best I can offer is to advise you to ask KF2 about this. His audio/video skills are some of the best I've seen around here. If I'm not mistaken, he's a graphic artist so he probably knows a lot about the software you're mentioning. I don't think he frequents this part of the board so he probably won't see your question. Good luck!

What a great episode. The whole Golf Course thing is just awesome. Hurley is the man. When RashMan Redshirt walks up all huffy and puffy like "are you guys playing Golf?" and then in an instant, his demeanor changes and he says "can I play?" Once again, Hurley is the man.

Okay, I noticed a few more things, and I also made note of a few things I might have missed to check in my second runthru.

- I think the tripwire Sayid found was a "dummy" trap, in that it was meant to be seen so one would step carefully over and step right in the real trap - the noose. Sayid fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

- Here's a big one (KF2 you may want to add this to your NUMBERS site if it's not there already)...also, I could use some confirmation help on this one as I'm not bilingual....
Danielle asks Sayid "Where is Alex" in 8 different languages. I used the English as my marker, and counted 8 distincly different languages asking the same question.
Again, I could use some help confirming this, but, I'm pretty sure I got this one right.

- A Question: What exactly does Danielle say to Sayid in French right after he mentions the French transmission they found? I assume it was part of the transmission, and Sayid recognized it.
But then I thought, hey, Sayid just mentioned a French transmission - he DOESN'T speak French - and since I believe one of the languages Danielle asks "Where is Alex" in is French, she heard him make a reference to French transmission, and started spewing out French, to make him think it was her that left the transmission, when in fact is was actually Alex; and she's been on the Island alot longer than 16 years. I would elaborate more, but I have other points to get to. An exact translation would be helpful.

- Nadia's family was rich

- a possible numbers reference: Nadia was grilled/tortured by Republican Guard 4 times: Chest, Hands, Feet, Sayid (but we don't know if Sayid actually did anything to her; also, those wounds could've easily been inflicted in one big nasty torture session)

- Just when Sayid asks to be let go, and Danielle says "No, I need you", a loud animal shows up which we never see, and she goes darting out after it, giving Sayid the chance to escape. I think this whole scene was somehow setup by the Island/Others in Sayid's favor, or maybe in Danielle's depending on how you look at it; but this makes me think that the Polar Bear, and the Magic Rain/Go Find Vincent from Walt WASN'T actually Walt, but the Island/Others beginning to manipulate things the way they want. Remember its not about the mystery of the island, its all about the survivors (or so say TPTB), and this would be a sign of that I think.

- a few "really stretching it" possible numbers references:
4 Golfers start 1st island open
4 people involved in Nadia's "Green Mile" so to speak - Nadia, Sayid, and 2 guards

- Danielle and Robert had a standoff like she and Sayid had in this episode where he didn't notice the firing pin missing, and she shot him - will we get to see this in a Danielle FB? That would be REALLY cool to have a Danielle/Robert/Alex FBs!

Thats all I have for now.
Discuss On.

Peace,
Truffula

Please Truffula, Elaborate. The French transmission was actually Alex? How do you know this?

Alimonkey85 - I don't KNOW this, it's just a budding theory of mine (and I'm sure you can find some sort of thread on it in the theories/specualtion boards).
Deception is the name of the game as far as the writers go; they throw so many "false clues" our way it's really hard to figure out which are the goods, but it's still lots of fun though.
IF the transmission was recorded by Alex, then Danielle didn't want this transmission going out ("What would happen if we were rescued" she says to Sayid about the spreading of "infection"), so she obviously knew about it, IF she wasn't the one leaving it. This theory could also suggest an answer to the question posed after Exodus 2 - was that ALEX that threw the bomb onto the raft? If my theory is good (and with this show, I take every theory with a grain of salt) then the character shown throwing the bomb WOULD be old enough to be ALEX, and very well could be.
Now, there was some interesting SPOILER info that I came across and thought about as I watched tonights rerun....
Here is a link to the thread containing my thoughts on it:

I really get the feeling that TIME is a MAJOR factor in what's happening. Hence the NUMBERS.

That's all for now.

I believe those type power or transmission cables include a bare stranded strength cable, meaning, it provides the rigidity so as not to stress the actual power or transmission cables. Same as aerial cable, the weight of the cable is supported by the support cable, not the actual wires. The distance spanning between poles or towers would be too much and possibly damage the critical wires/cable. I think it's the same with underwater power or transmission cables.

I totally missed the first Ethan presence, hunting and scouring with LOCKE! His demeanor is definitaley different from his kidnapping/fighting and threatening manner. Could there be "twins" or clones? Does Locke know a little bit more about Ethan than everyone else? He wouldn't hide that info, would he? LOL

Yeah, it has always seemed to me that the Ethan situation was Locke influenced. Like he was Locke's first apprentice. And after seeing how much "insight" Locke has into some of the lostaways, why wasn't he able to see inside Ethan? If you ask me Ethan was doing the islands bidding through Locke's direction.

I am wondering if those were the whisperers he was hearing while semi-conscious.

thoughtform
07-28-05, 02:09 PM
K, if I were to guess, I would say that the whispers Sayid hears in the jungle, are things he has heard in his past. So far, I think that everyone has heard something personal in the whispers. I think Kate heard someone call for help, like her mom did in "Born to Run", Sawyer heard,"It will come back around", from when he shot the shrimp guy, Jack heard ice in a glass, like his father's drinks. So I think the voices in a different language in Sayid's, would be from something he feels guilt over in the past.

Edited to add; When Sayid is first regaining his consciousness in Danielle's shelter, I think he is hearing Danielle asking "Where is Alex?", in different languages.

is it just me, or does when danielle says "could you imagine what would happen if we got rescued?" (or something like that) sound ALOT like when Locke explains to Sayid that he knocked him out and destroyed his transceiver? When I heard her say that I just thought immediately.. LOCKE! i don't know why, is it just me?

Thanks Truffula for clearing that up before!

Also I'm not sure that it's 8 languages, I don't think she's going in the same order each time. Also try counting from "Dondez esta Alex" or "Ou est Alex" and it's not 8.

Sayid fell for it hook, line, and sinker...I definitely agree! That's why I'm sure the trap was for man as opposed to boar (there was some speculation on the latter).

Off topic but.....I didn't realize the first time around that it was Locke who introduced Ethan Rom to the group. HMMMMmmm.
Ironic too, that the first person Ethan talked to
(other than Locke off-screen) was Hurley. The man who would out him as not being on the manifest in a future episode.
I'm getting so much more out of watching the reruns and will probally get even more when my DVD set arrives. I have truely NEVER been into a Television show so much in my life. (and this is comming from someone who as a teenager wouldn't go out on friday nights until Dallas finished at 10:00 pm).

I thought it was ironic that Sayid was the one being tortured and not the other way around.

Why didn't Sayid ask Danielle what the cable was for or even if it belonged to her?

Why is the cable running into the ocean and where does it lead in either direction?

What jabbed Sayid in the leg when he was hung upside down after carreening into the tree?

Why was he knocked unconcious when he hit the ground and not when he hit the tree?

How does Danielle get refrigeration for the sedative she gave to Sayid?

These are just some of the unanswered questions I have

jncar

Some interesting insights into Sayid's character:

1) He was friends with his commanding officer, and seemed ambitious in the military

2) He was willing to kill his commanding officer/friend rather than kill Nadia--who really may have been a terrorist/conspirator. He never really knew where his loyalties lay until that moment. He was a follower, not a leader. Now he is in the position of having to be a leader. How will he do?

3) Nadia mentions that even as a kid Sayid was serious and "grown up."

4) Sayid lied to Danielle about Nadia being dead as a ploy to gain her sympathy, and it worked. This is drawing on his own experiance as an interogator, knowing that it is hard to distance yourself from your victim enough to do your job when you feel sympathy/empathy for them. Very clever of him to establish that sympathy to get her to stop torturing him.

5) Why does he offer to fix the music box? Is it just to further enhance those emotional bonds that might lead her to freeing him, or is it because he feels sympathy for her in return? Could go either way on this one.

6) In the standoff with Danielle, Sayid pulled the trigger first. He was fully prepared to blow her head off. No hesitation in killing for self-defense.

7) When he finally tells Danielle the truth about his 7 year search for Nadia, I think we finally see the real Sayid--a lost and confused man who has let a 7 year obsession with a woman who may or may not be alive destroy any chance that he may have had at getting close to anyone else. I think this is an epiphany moment for him, where he really does realize that he can no longer rely on only himself, and he needs to start trusting and caring for other people. Now, why he chose Shannon (of all people) to start trusting and caring for is stll a big question mark in my book. Maybe he just thought she was hot?

DohBoy

Maybe he just thought she was hot?Is there any better reason?

allisnotlost
08-01-05, 07:07 PM
Maybe she reminds him of Nadia, brave yet vunerable (when she was having her asthma attack) and rich (Nadia's family was rich like Shannon's) and attacking first as a defense mechanism (Nadia pushed Sayid down as a child, Shannon verbally attacks all the people she meets before they have a chance to reject her). Maybe Nadia and Shannon aren't as different from each other as they might first appear. And maybe Sayid sees that.

This is drawing on his own experiance as an interogator, knowing that it is hard to distance yourself from your victim enough to do your job when you feel sympathy/empathy for them. Very clever of him to establish that sympathy to get her to stop torturing him...There was speculation after viewing The Greater Good episode, Sayid didn't lie. The terrorist group learned of his involvement in bringing about the recovery of the explosives and had her killed. Remember when Sawyer said Sayid was removed, by authorities, from the boarding line in Pilot (Part 1)? Well, supposedly that's when he was told of her death. But I like your theory better. The idea of Nadia's death being on his hands, would probably kill Sayid. Especially having searched for her so long.

jncar also says:...6) In the standoff with Danielle, Sayid pulled the trigger first. He was fully prepared to blow her head off. No hesitation in killing for self-defense...I've always had a qustion about this particular scene! "The firing pin has been removed. Robert didn't notice it was missing either when I shot him." Apparently she removed the firing pin, before she was confronted by Robert? Which means she has more than a passing knowledge of guns. I mean, I could shoot a rifle, but have no idea how to remove the firing pin. Plus, she saw the symptoms of the sickness taking over the crew. Or was she the one who got the illness and killed her defenseless crew? Another thought! Is the illness insanity? And does Danielle have the illness?

I did review the forum's transcripts and I found this

Rousseau [Says something in French: "Si quelqu'un m'entend, je vous en prie, venez à notre aide... Il les a tués. Il les a TOUS tués..." which means: "If anybody hears me, please, come to our rescue... It (or-He-) killed them. It (or -He-) killed them ALL...") Comes out of the shadows. ]

The actual English translation is not correct.
Il les a tués. Il les a TOUS tués...
should be : He killed them. He killed them all.

Since Rousseau uses the pronoun Il (he) and not ça (it) , it is someone [a man, not a woman] and not something that killed them. So, WHO is the murderer ?

Whether or not Danielle asks Sayid "Where is Alex" in different languages, remains up for speculation. It's too difficult to determine if she did in fact ask that question in Spanish, French and maybe some other languages too.
In the show Sayid is Iraqi, so maybe Danielle recognised him as being of middle Eastern decent, then I don't think you'd be asking such a person something in Spanish, right?

The monster coming through the Window is in real-life an Elephant snuzzle. I don't know what they are called sorry, and it's 2:42am here and can't be bothered to research what they are called either. But they used an Elephant for this scene. But in the episode an elephant is not mentioned. We only get to have the impression that Danielle thinks it's a bear. Though the noise sounded very little like that of a bear, IMO.
I guess we'll be finding out more in later shows why Danielle is convinced there are no monsters on the island. She sounded so convincing. Maybe she's seen what that mechanical thing really is, maybe she's killed "the monster" and that there is now just the machine thing and bears roaming the woods.

Has anyone been able to translate what Nadia wrote on the back of that photograph with her on it?

I'm not sure myself yet whether Sayid thinks she's dead or alive but I think he is slowly starting to realise that he may never know coz it's proving so difficult to find a way off the island and the island is just so extraordinary. Perhaps he's also starting to realise that something on the island wants to keep him there and that he can't leave at this point of time.

I'm pretty convinced the cable was hidden under the ground, but just to be slightly revealed that somebody would notice and would follow it's lead. I don't think the other end led that leads into the ocean leads to some mysterious things(documents, treasures) being burried a few meters into the ocean. If that's what some people are getting at.

The others and the radio tower are the most intrigueing things. We seem to be getting somewhere. And I think that Danielle will evetually come and see Saying's "people". Coz she clearly can't stand her loneliness much longer.

Don't bother saying, well if you watched episode 23 then so and so, coz I haven't seen that one yet. I've only seen the first 10 eps of s1. Sorry bout that, but it took a while with me before I realised this show was actually worth watching.

Wow, I'm not a big loser for replying to a 3 month old post.. hehe.

"Il" can mean "he" or "it." You wouldn't use "ca" in that sentence. So while it's possible she was referring to a man, since sickness would be an "it," as would the "monster," it's probably more likely that she was reffering to a thing.
