Here are my notes from Both my first and second runthru of Season One for this episode:
LOST Season One - Episode 21 -
The Greater Good
Sayid Backstory #2
No eye opening - Shannon mourning Boone as Sayid stands over
FB 1 - Sayid taken into custody by CIA.
Taken from London airport/trainstation.
Melissa Cole from CIA and Robbie Hewett from ASIS (Australian CIA)
300 lbs c4 stolen from outside Melbourne.
Asam Tazea - Sayid's terrorist friend/college roomate at Cairo Univ.
CIA knows 7 years since Sayid left Iraq. 6 months here, 3 months there.
Looking for Nadia (Nor Abed-Jasim).
Day ???
Jack is looking for Locke, Kate brings him back.
Boone's funeral - I see Mike, Walt, Hurley, Jin, Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Charlie, Claire, Sun, Sayid, Shannon, redshirts
Joanna died day 6 says Sayid (for timeline)
Locke shows up - tells about plane, says his leg was hurt, tells about the radio (NOT transmission - did he even hear?)
Jack attacks Locke (why do i get the feeling this wont be the last time)
Sayid, Kate, and Sun hear Jack expain what Boone said.
FB 2 - Asam and Sayid reunite, Sayid begins con.
Asam is tree cutter (lie), his wife? Zahara was killed by stray bomb, in Australia almost a year. Asam lives with 2 other Iraqi men in Sydney flat. Sayid notices fake fire alarm as listening device. Hadad (Terrorist living with Asam) suggests that FATE brought Sayid to Asam.
Baby temporarily dubbed "Turniphead" by Charlie.
Charlie very protective of Claire's baby.
Locke apologizes to Shannon (wearing bloody shirt, how tasteful) - sees storm coming.
Kate drugs Jack so he will sleep. Shannon steals guncases key.
QUESTION - (in two parts) 1 - How does Shannon know where Jack stashed the guns, 2 - If she knew, how would she know Jack was drugged/sleeping soundly enough for her to sneak up and take the key from around his neck? (Answer - I suspect KATE!!)
Walt is "afraid?" of Locke, doesn't want to talk to him now.
Locke calls kidney scar "war wound" - Sayid wants to go to plane
Locke said Luck was how they found plane, they were exploring (maybe more of you should too). A long time ago Sayid was interrogator he says to Locke.
I know when I'm being lied to - says Sayid
FB 3 - Asam has to blow himself up.
CIA wants Sayid to convince Asam to blow himself up or they'll arrest Nadia as an insurgent (Assholes).
Hurley sings James Brown's "I feel good" to Turniphead/Aaron. Probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV.
Sawyer's voice shuts Turniphead up - very weird.
Locke shows Sayid the heroin, and his gun (refers to half a click - military term) - gives him the gun, and tells him he was the one who knocked him out and destroyed transciever. I think this was Locke testing Sayid (kinda making sure it was safe to show him the Hatch/let him in on his little secret - Sayid was shown the Hatch before anyone else)
Why knock him out? - everyone's best interest, it killed them all - do you really want to lead them all there, not seeing things clearly - like with the raft. Does Locke know something about what's going to happen to Walt on the raft?
Locke lies about hatch - he answers Sayid in a riddle.
FB 4 - Sayid convinces Asam, to blow himself up
Sayid makes reference to The Greater Good
Sayid's lie - I LOST someone too.
Caps of Boone's wallot reveal - birthday ?/10/81, lived in Malibu, CA
Shannon is pissed Sayid didn't kill Locke - so she steals guncase key (see above question on this - just to say again I DON'T TRUST KATE!!)
Jin and Mike comunicating better. Raft looking good.
Sawyer calls baby "Baby Huey"
Charlie makes Sawyer read motor mags to baby to keep him quiet.
Shannon goes after Locke in the rain
FB 5 - CIA always gets their man
Licence plate of Hadad's car is ALK-125 (or 1+2+5=8)
Sayid admits about CIA - Asam kills himself
Shannon has gun on Locke - Sayid, Kate, and Jack are there.
Shannon demonstrates that she can use a gun by firing into the ground.
Sayid stops Shannon from killing Locke, only a head graze. (And we all thought for sure that Locke was gonna die cause of the promo)
Jack is still pissed at Locke.
"There's always a choice" Sayid to Kate
FB 6 - The Tickets
Nadia lives in Irvine, CA., south of LA, works as a lab tech at a medical testing company
First Oceanic flight for Sayid leaves in 2 hours. Sayid has flight changed so he can take care of Asam's burial arrangements.
QUESTION - where does he get new flight tickets for 815?
Sayid wants to see the Hatch. (So does Locke take him right then?)
LOST.
Two down, two to go...
Discuss On.
Peace,
Truff

Jack attacks Locke (why do i get the feeling this wont be the last time)
:lol I really hope it isn't the last time! I kinda like seeing Jack attack him!
I really hope we do find out what happened there. I really don't want to think that Kate would help her steal the keys... :\
Why knock him out? - everyone's best interest, it killed them all - do you really want to lead them all there, not seeing things clearly - like with the raft. Does Locke know something about what's going to happen to Walt on the raft?
I always thought it was strange that Locke would knock him out like that. His reason for doing it is weak and dumb and I defidently think he had another reason to do it.
Sayid stops Shannon from killing Locke, only a head graze. (And we all thought for sure that Locke was gonna die cause of the promo)
... I was a little dissapointed...

truffula says:..FB 2 - Asam and Sayid reunite, Sayid begins con.

Hadad (Terrorist living with Asam) suggests that FATE brought Sayid to Asam...Truffula, I don't think this incident took place in Australia. I think Zahara was killed in Iraq. Then Asam moved to Sydney.
truffula asks:QUESTION - (in two parts) 1 - How does Shannon know where Jack stashed the guns, 2 - If she knew, how would she know Jack was drugged/sleeping soundly enough for her to sneak up and take the key from around his neck? (Answer - I suspect KATE!!)This brought about a lot of speculation and discussion.
I think Shannon may've overheard a conversation about the location of the guncase and who and where the key was to be found.
truffula also says:...Locke shows Sayid the heroin, and his gun (refers to half a click - military term) - gives him the gun, and tells him he was the one who knocked him out and destroyed transciever. I think this was Locke testing Sayid (kinda making sure it was safe to show him the Hatch/let him in on his little secret...I think he was trying to convince Sayid he was trustworth, but not to show him the hatch. Remember, he still denies the existence of the hatch to the very end. Also, remember Locke telling Boone, "we want him on our side."

I was just rewatching this episode. When Sayid and Hassam get into the truck with the C4, they put on uniforms... Sayid's has a name label saying "Steve." Now, I think the other said "Scott" but I couldn't make it out. Anyone know if that's the case? It'd be funny if they were "Scott and Steve" like the two men that kept getting mixed up.

I mentioned a bit about this in the episode disscussion for eppy 20.
Notice how Jack lashes out after Locke says: "it happened because he was trying to help us. He was a hero."
Do you think maybe Jack cant handle someone else being seen as a hero? JAck is a pretty dedicated man, very determine and like to succeed every time. Its probably just his reaction to the death of boone but that thought just came into my mind.
Kind of like in eppy 13.
Charlie: Then he saved my life.
Jack:So you trust him?
Charlie: Trust him? No offense, mate, but if there's one person on this island I would put my absolute faith in to save us all, it would be John Locke.
The look on Jacks face says it all. You can see he wants to be the hero, the one to save everybody else. Especialy hearing charlie saying this just days after he himself saved charlie's life. And if i have to say doing a bit more than what locke had to do!lol.
Back to this episode, how cute was Charlie and Hurley trying to calm down 'TurnipHead!' lol bless

He does have a problem sharing blame. He takes it all on himself. He feels it's all his fault.

Thank goodness for the christmas vacation, I had one whole day to do what ever I wanted by myself (family doing their thing) so I rented and watched S1 (some of them any way) and took notes. The thing about this episode (and I felt that way when I first saw it but I couldn't put a handle on what was bugging me about it) is that Hassam had an unusual accent for an Iraqi. It sounded like a scottish/iraqi mix of an accent. Hassam doesn't look quite middle eastern either. Since I've seen S2 I know about Desmond and his Scottish accent. So I wonder could there be some sort of a relationship in this. Oh, Hassam also said to Sayid when they were ready to drive the terrorist van into a suicide mission, Hassam said, "Don't be nervous, brother. We'll be okay."

Dude, as if Sayid looks anything like an Iraqi and he to sometimes has twinges of that british accent in the show. if you listen carefully.
but about his appearance, when i first saw him in the show i said to myself "what the hell is an indian doing playing an iraqi". well, i guess there are few genuine iraqi actors living in the united states. probaly why a scotsman played iraqi hassam.
also, in the dvd special features, it's mentioned that the guy who cast naveen andrews/sayid, gave him a go at the lost audition coz he knew him from a diffrent show, and naveen nailed it there and then. so i don't think they even tried out any other actors for his part. in other words, had naveen looked like an icelander or chinese, he would've got the part anyway, coz he convinced immediately.

Okay, Stryker, I'll forget what Hassam looks like, but what about the fact that he said, " Don't be nervous, brother." He used the brother word just like Desmond did with a scottish accent. Could there be a corelation between them?
Also Sayid wasn't supposed to be flight 815. The two "agents" wanted him to leave on a flight that left in two hours. Sayid wanted to claim the body of Hassam so he could bury him (as per their religion). So the agents let him leave on a later flight. I know I'm stretching on this but could the two agents have manipulated Sayid to chose to be on flight 815? Or is Sayid the wild card on the plane because he really wasn't supposed to be on it?
Stryker
01-03-06, 12:20 AM
and who manipulated hurley to be on it? coz he wasn't meant to be on it as either. neither was sun really.
i believe the agents simply didn't know that a muslim man needs a proper burial. they didn't come across as people who gave too much of a damn about the islamic faith.
xXxJessiexXx
01-03-06, 10:36 AM
yeah i agree. ive been thinking about this. was he manipulated? or was it all of his own accord? They offered him a flight in two hours. If this had been the one to crash then yes he probably would have been manipulated but it wasnt and he refused any way. So really he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. lol. But unless the agents felt so annoyed they somehow knew the other one was going to cradsh and put him on it. Sounds a bit un realistic but then so is the whole show really.
The agents wouldnt have known Sayid wanted to take the body and bury it. They wouldnt have cared beacuse to them he was just some terroist, to sayid he was a friend. A brother.

I think him being onboard was a coincidence.
The only one I can point to, and say for sure was manipulated onto flight 815 is Claire. The psychic, Mr. Malkin, definitely put her on the flight. "It has to be this flight. It can't be any other. They're already scheduled to meet you when you arrive. Flight 815. Flight 815."
And again, welcome!

On other threads people are talking about long term manipulation of characters by Something/Someone. Now if Sayid wasn't manipulated (and I really don't think he was) then he could be the one person that "island powers that be didn't count on". He is the one who can figure out the technology behind what brought them to the island and what's keeping them there. Sayid will throw a chink into the island PTB plans. The island wants to do this ... but Sayid knows how to divert that ... He's a communications specialist and he knows how to ask questions to get answers. Sayid is the one who will get everyone off craphole island, eventually.
Just rewatched the episode.....tried searching the thread...
The pentagonally shaped brown box from Kates flashback is on the table in Hassams apartment. This same box is in the Hatch also....prop error or huge clue?

howdy, when i rewacthed this episode i think it gave us one of the biggest clues to what will be in series 2. not that relevant now but worth noting maybe for future episodes where an innocous clue could hold a lot of info.
when sayid is in the room with the iraqis and messing about with the fire alarm, the guys on the sofa are playing a game. the game being half life.
this you know. however the reason on the re-run why half life stuck in my head was the reference to it one of the guys says 'use the crowbar'
now im a bit of a games buff, the crow bar is recognised as an symbol for half life (much like a toadstool would be in mario) so why make a point out of it. well i though maybe the shows writers want people to know that its half life being played (much like the book references).
what does half -life contain?, a underground laboratory concerning teleportation and experiments, a company called black messa. at best the content is loosely conected however lo and behold in series 2-underground labs-maybe the writers where just nodding a bit to the future by including half life?
i bet they(the writers) have played it to, as it has a huge cult fanbase. also in the episode where walt asks michale for batteries for his gameboysp, well they use a recharger, not purchasable batteries ones, so why did the writer sget that gameboy thing so wrong but mention a innoucous detail like the crowvbar which was correct and most likely known by a game geeks like myself.

That's a great observation in hindsight. I think TPTB have done the same throughout the series. Remember the comic book? Everything in that comic has come to fruition.
Have you found any tidbits in S2 we can look forward to in S3?

howdy, thanks for the welcome.
ive just seen series 2 once so far-so nothing as of yet.
yes the comic book-good stuff-i love how they dont explain it and leave it to peoples interpretation.
im sorry if this is in the wrong thread.watership down was another similar idea as i dont know which episode it was in.bare with me on this ok peeps?
you had the various tribes ( of rabbits) the new ones travelling (would be the losties) the powerful established ones led by general woonwort (the others led by presumably creepy henry fenry chappie?or maybe hes a 2nd in command to someone not seen yet).
even in water ship down one the good rabbits is psychic, called fiver i think.
anyway in the finale the good rabbits set up an ambush plan to get rid of woonwort and his croonies, by luring a big fierce rabbit killin dog who eventually nails woon wart and the good rabbits have the new land and a new warren.
wonder if the losties will lure the big smokey monster against the others?in a similar fashion.
also watership down is a very spiritual book/visions/etc (despite the rabbits) which again hold true with losts theological ideas (which are mentioned or referred to in lost nearly every episodde.

Revan1976, you've got to take a look at our literary reference (http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16085) thread. It's astounding how many books they've used.
revan1976
05-30-06, 07:31 PM
that a great list.
thats what i think might or could happen at some point in series 3, the others will prove invunerable+clever to whatever the losta ways do, so eventually one lostaway will have the idea of using the big smoky monster thing by luring him using loataway characaters as bait (in a sort of relay) to where the others are + to get the others-like in watership down.
(i dont think the others are allied to the monster its another entity on the island with it own agenda, from what ive surmised so far)
anyway just idle speculation, more than probable very wrong, i also thinkpossibly half the island is metal with vegetation on top-like the ring world in the halo game.
part of the fun though is a good bit of speculation:)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I remember, in this episode, Walt told Locke npot to open the hatch,. Was that reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeely weird? Walt didnt even no about the hatch so like... and the whole scene walt sounded so scary and creepy.... and it wa s weiord. also when he told michael bout burning the raft michaels like u no wat we dont have to move. but walt, aagain being creepy goes... yes we do. adhtne theres sort of this creepy music. hes been a little bit creepy before his kidnapping.

Walt wanted to reassure Locke he hadn't poisoned the water Michael was drinking. That's when Locke touched his wrist, and Walt got the premonition of the hatch. This was also the episode Walt confided to Michael, he'd burned the first raft. And, they had to leave the island.

Thank you for the welcome. I appreciate it. :)
Sorry, I must have watched Discs 6 and 7 of the Season 1 DVD set so many times to the point that I've been mixing u8p episodes. Well, I just don't understand how Walt got the feeling that there was a hatch just by feeling Lovcke touch his wrist. Locke touched him, and suddenly he started going off about the hatch and not to open it, when, from my recollection (which very well might be wrong), he didn't even know about.
Sorry about that, I just missed what you were trying to say to answer that.
Could you just say give me your thoughts on that? Maybe I'm missing something, I just thought about it and my best guess is that it was sort nof foreshadowing to something bad. But that was too weak of an answer for me, so if you have any comments, please help me on that.
Thanks!

Thanks!I think that's exactly it! I've come to the realization, Walt is "special". Remember how he never looses at backgammon? He's able to role exactly what he needs when he needs it. Remember what his step-father said. "Sometimes when he's around things happen. He's different somehow." I think when Locke touched his arm, Walt got a foreshadowing of something bad.

Okay, thanks. Now I understand you. The thing is, I'm generally not one to speculate, because this show is too much for me to speculate and all my theories seem insanely twisted and streched. I didn't really put much thought into Walt being special other than that he has his "power" (with the bird and the polar bear). It definitely makes sense, I completely get you. Thanks.
Actually, lol, now that I think about that being his power, I'm releived, because they won't forget about that, and I NEVER thought they would remember that. But who am I say to say. Besides, this is LOST.

Well, thanks!I've always excepted the idea, Walt unconsciously manipulated that scene with the bird. I'm not so sure now about the Polar bear. Remember, we've now come to realize, part of the Dharma Iniative was the study of animals. "...where scientists and free thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism..." Also, lets not forget that branded shark from Adrift!
