Have we even established that the group is on an island? I mean, I'm pretty sure they are... but we have no proof of that yet.
Not that this is even near relavent to anything. Just a thought.

The producers have apparently stated they're on an island, but I guess we won't know for sure unless the characters actually get off their butts and go look around.

Didn't some one post that the producers also said they will never find out how big the island is?
If they are not on island then the pilot was a real dumb ass for not mentioning that to Jack and company before going of to feed the creature, I would have to add that to my 'worst flight crew ever' list.

Living in Florida, I just thought of a metaphor for what I think the island is.
Some kind of naturally-occurring quantum sinkhole that has been moving around the Earth for centuries gobbling up everything in its path.
I say moving around the Earth (kind of like a storm maybe - anyone ever read the book "Time Storm" by Dickson), not anchored, because that would explain the polar bear and perhaps the thing in the jungle really is a wooly mammoth, descended from creatures the sinkhole scooped up centuries ago.
or maybe there's been more than one quantum sinkhole (also think it might be something like a black hole, but not as big and not having the same gravitational forces otherwise the survivors and the plane would be have been reduced to sub-atomic particles).
The more I watch the show and read about the writers' comments regarding "pseudo-science", the more I think the Island's secret may be something having to do with an esoteric and not thoroughly validated branch of science like quantum mechanics and/or string theory.
Lest anyone take umbrage at my classifying quantum mechanics as "not thoroughly validated", let me point out that there are still inconsistencies between the theory of relativity and the theoriy of quantum mechanics that cosmologists, physicists, and mathematicians are still struggling to resolve. The theory of relativity is consistent with the way nature has been shown to operate on a macrocosmic scale (like the recent astronomical discoveries regarding "frame-dragging") but breaks down when scientists try to apply it to the microcosmic scale of sub-atomic particles (quanta). Conversely, the theory of quantum mechanics is consistent with the way nature behaves on the microcosmic scale but breaks down when scientists try to apply it to the macrocosmic scale of stars, planets, and galaxies.
It seems to me that there is a lot of room in current theories of quantum mechanics, relativity, and string theory to come up with a pseudo-scientific explanation for the island being some kind of quantum sinkhole, a rip in time or space, and since the writers say it's been around for millenia, I think it's possible it might even be a naturally occurring phenomenon. Equally strange things have been known to happen in nature like the Oklo fossils of naturally occurring nuclear reactors.
I submit that the island's secret is something exotic but naturally-occurring which the writers will account for using pseudo-scientific extrapolations of thought based on quantum mechanics, relativity, and string theory.

This theory rates a 10 on my coolness scale. But how might a large land mass retain consistency if it were a quantum sinkhole?

The island might not be a naturally occurring time-space phenom. There could have been some intent behind how the island got to be the way it is, which is not to say that naturally occurring isn't a good theory, simply that until Lost is more clear we won't know for sure.
Here are three ideas, and some rambling permutations:
• the island was changed by a pre-civilization (Atlantis, Lemuria-Mu) back in the day to have its present strangeness, either some sort of lingering aura causes the island to be the way it is or some sort of technology exist on the island causing it;
• the island was changed by a modern government or corporation experimenting in applications of unified field theory or some sort of other Philadelphia Experiment like pseudo-science, as above either the technology is on the island or some sort of echo effect of a previous experiment;
• the island was changed by ET technology.
Since most developed ET theories include some sort of ET/pre-civ link its possible to combine the first and second idea. And since most developed ET theories also include a link between ETs and the shadow government, or whatever, you can combine the second and third ideas. But if you're really ambitiously weird, why not combine all three ideas.

All have been discussed...go back to original posts...very good to bring you up to speed.
Hawkmistress: Quite a dissertation...and I give it a 10 as well!

MikeRowe, can you explain a little bit more about ET technology?

I think they have better technology than we do.
