View Full Version : 2009 NL Cy Young
Who's your 2009 NL Cy Young Award winner?
I have a feeling that a lot of NL pitchers will be getting votes that really count, but i'm just listing the guys i consider most likely to win.
This poll is public, and will close in about two weeks.
ETA: I got one right! Thanks again for the fixes, TBC!
A funny thing happened on the way to the NL Cy Young award this year. Source (http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_2009.shtml#NLcya)
Tim Lincecum got 11 first place votes. Adam Wainwright got 12 first place votes. But Lincecum is the one taking the home the hardware with a grand total of just 10 points more than Wainwright, who finished third! Chris Carpenter finished second; he had just 9 first place votes, but finished 4 points higher than Wainwright.
To recap: the guy who got the most first place votes finished third. I have to wonder if things would've played out differently if Carpenter and Wainwright hadn't been teammates. I do not intend to imply that Lincecum doesn't deserve his second consecutive Cy Young award. However, Wainwright pitched 8 more innings; faced 65 more batters; issued fewer walks; had a better winning percentage, with 4 more wins and only 1 more loss; ERA only 0.15 higher. Lincecum did have a considerable edge in BAA, Whip, and strikeouts.
There's also the matter of the Giants not making the postseason while the Cards won their division. I guess that doesn't matter anymore to the voters, and that's ok by me. :) Some times the best players are on poor teams.
So how many votes did Pedro get?
