The Kansas City Chiefs have released running back Larry Johnson on the day he was due to return from suspension.
The 29-year-old was banned by the team for two weeks after making demeaning comments on his Twitter page.
With the Chiefs then on a bye week the first round pick in the 2003 draft only missed one game - Sunday's 24-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Kansas City have now decided to end their association with a player who was just 75 yards short of breaking the franchise's rushing record, currently held by Priest Holmes.
In 75 games Johnson has run for 5,996 yards and 55 touchdowns. He set the NFL single-season record with 416 rushing attempts in 2006, a year in which he managed 1,789 yards - the best ever by a Chiefs tail back.
However he has struggled ever since that campaign and this year has amassed just 358 yards on 132 carries.
Jamaal Charles took over as Kansas City's starting running back for the week nine loss in Jacksonville, a result that leaves the team with a 1-7 record in their first year under head coach Todd Haley.
