This is not a big deal and just a post for Dreaminlost that I told her/him I would find out, but Rose IS humming the same song, "My Conversation", by Slim Smith, which is the song that is playing in the first part of the episode. So, is Rose Clarvoyant? any thoughts?:)

Hey man good call I said the same thing to my wife after we watched, I do think that will have something. Think about what we have talked about today, that is something the average TV watcher could pick up on, so dittos on your call, "I think I have found a friend here"?Usually someone pops up right after my posts and shoots whatever I say down, I got your back BROTHA!

For those of us who are clueless, can you provide a few more details.

Who is SlimSmith?

What's the song about?

Why do you equate this with Rose being clairvoyant?

The song she was humming was the song that was playing during Hurley's dream sequence SHBL.

no problem Sawyer. The song that Hurley is listening to at the beginning of the episode when he is eating, it is by Slim Smith and called My Conversation. Done in 1972 and on a double album called Keep that Lovelight Shining.
i added the link and hope it works. let me know if it doesn't.
as for the clarvoyant part, Rose humming the same song, may be just me.

I'm glad someone noticed what Rose was humming. I did, but couldn't place it. I'm trying to find it and download it so I can listen.

Rose doing the laundry reminded me a lot of a fairy tale that I read the night before the show aired...

East of the Sun, West of the Moon

I bet if you were "dirty" you could hide from a lot of things. For instance Arnold Swartzeneger hid from The Predator that way...

JUAN! I'm so happy you posted that. Thanks for your investigative work.

SO what does this mean??

Here's my theory and I'm stickig to it: Rose is bad.

No, I don't have a lot of evidence to support my theory, just more of a gut feeling. TPTB want us to embrace her character, which is my first clue that she's not what she appears to be.

Somehow she hummed the same tune that was in Hurley's dream sequence--and hummed it in Hurley's presence (not that Hurley actually HEARD the music in his dream).

And then there's the thing about the ring on her right hand looking suspiciously like the ring Brian wore on his hand. (Remember that whole discussion last summer)

There is a lot more to Brian than meets the eye--I think we all agree on that point. And I wonder if Rose is part of the mystery somehow.

Bottom line: I think Rose is not who we think she is.
And thanks again, Juan, for your work.;)

Dreamin,
not a problem. I am thinking the same idea about Rose not being on the level. The ring question is bothering me on a couple levels as well. Sun is not shown with her ring in this episode (towards the end when she is burying the bottle), yet Rose has always kept hers since she "knows" Bernard is alive.
Brian I do think is going to come up again. I always wonder what job Susan was going to go to Rome for (lawyer thing didn't seem right). I don't remember the job exactly, any help?
SO now we have Walt's picture, the song in the dream and neither were around, and Hurley eating an Apollo candy bar that when awake he says he doesn't know the brand. hmmm..
I'll be watching your posts from now on Dreamin...

Maybe Rose is Walt's grandma. She'd be about the right age as she seems around 60 to me

^^ Grandma Rose?? Then she would have to be the mother of either Michael or Susan. We know she's not Michael's mom.

I went back and listened and she was NOT humming the same tune at all. The first four our five notes were similar and that's it.

Rose is humming an old blues song, I'm almost sure. Or even, if you'll forgive the lack of a more PC term, an negro spiritual, as they were called. It's the same 9 beats sung (or hummed) over and over like a mantra. "ba da bah ah ah - ba da bah ah. The second grouping an octave lower.

I listened one last time before finishing this post and I stand by my opinion. There is a similar sound but the melody is not the same.

still thinking it is the same tune Rose was humming. listened to it for umpteenth time now and recorded it off tivo to match the musical notes, still believe it is and for good reason. it becomes part of Hurley's dream with weird happenings, i.e. Walt on the milk carton, Hurley eating the Apollo bar and told Rose he never heard of brand. all tying in somehow but don't know how yet....

It IS the same song.

The higher octave she hums matches the song exactly, then when she does the lower octave (exact same melody), it's in perfect harmony with the actual song's lower octave.

Juan,
Rose hummed such a small snippet it's hard to tell. Almost sounded like a bit of the same song from earlier.

Guys, she's humming along with the song in the background: "Up On The Roof."

Which calls to mind--is this a metaphor for what may be going on "above ground" (since they are underground at the time)?

I agree now the same notes are being used. Now that I think of it even Driveshaft's "You are everybody" uses the same notes. No?

swobie, I've started thinking that as well. obviously in a more upbeat and faster pace. good point.

Glad you agree, jaunbong. The actual melodies aren't identical but the notes are there and I think it's in the same key all three songs.

Wagner took his motifs and reversed them - played them upside down. I don't know what this is called, but we need to start payng attention the the music now, too!

swobie,
I know what you are saying about Wagner's reversed music style and I am with you on the paying more attention on Lost's music connections too. I'll be lookin out for you later on with this stuff.:)

I'm on it. And I'm with you. I was just checking the theme on the Orientation Film, but got hung up on something else. I'll be listening to everything now.

Here's something regarding Wagner and motifs you might find interesting regarding Parsifal.

"A few principles or patterns in Wagner's use of musical motives can be identified. Firstly, each musical idea appears first in the orchestra, and is only later (and sometimes only much later) heard in the vocal line. Typically, new (or derived) ideas are presented in one of the three preludes or in the two interludes known as the Transformation Music. Secondly, the significance of a musical motive becomes defined when it is first heard in association with something that is seen on, or heard from, the stage. Thirdly, the complete or extended form of a motif is usually much more than the fragment(s) we hear at first. In particular, the musical motives of Agony, Prophecy and Klingsor's Magic emerge gradually, at first appearing as the tiniest fragment of two or three notes, that eventually grows into a melodic and harmonic complex several bars in length."
