View Full Version : Didn't Danielle call it a Science Vessel?

Hello all, first time poster.
I have been reading the forum ever since they started showing the commercials for season 2. I found it while playing with the oceanic air site one night.
Anyways, didn't the danielle say she was on a "science vessel" while she was talking to Sayid(SP?) back in season 1.
I began thinking back then, that the ship had animals onboard and that is how polar bears and such ended up on the island. Now that the sharks appear to have the "Dharma symbol" on them also, maybe there is a connection?
Perhaps the ship was part of the "Dharma" organization and branded the animals on board. Or maybe they branded and tagged animals in the area to study them. If ( and its a big if ) they were part of the same organization, perhaps they were delivering supplies to the "bunker" or maybe even bringing the infamous "him" to the bunker to relieve the current occupant.
Just my ideas, tell me how far off base you all think I am with this.

Thinking more about the "supplies" idea....
If this place was built back in the 70s, wouldn't some of the supplies have gone bad by now if they didn't have new ones delivered? Its been around 30 years possibly.
Also, in some of the images on this forum, there are supplies in what looks like plastic containers ( applesauce, mustard, etc...) I was a kid in the 70s and I seem to remember that most bulk supplies came in either glass containers or big cans back then. Wouldn't these more modern looking plastic containers have to have been delivered a little more recently?

Well, Danielle's ship arrived 16 years previous to the current year in the show.
meaning it was 1988 or so.

According to Danielle, the research vessel was three days out of Tahiti, got caught in a storm, and ran aground.
Below is a transcript of her account (from Solitary) :
Our vessel was 3 days out of Tahiti when our instruments malfunctioned. It was night, a storm, the sounds. The ship slammed into rocks, ran aground, the hull breached beyond repair. So, we made camp, dug out this temporary shelter. Temporary. Nearly 2 months we survived here, 2 months before... [the sickness]
Sayid
Your distress signal? The message I heard, you said, "It killed them all."
Rousseau
We were coming back from the Black Rock. It was them. They were the carriers.
Sayid
Who were the carriers?
Rousseau
The others.
Sayid
What others? What is the Black Rock? Have you seen other people on this island?
Rousseau
No, but I hear them. Out there, in the jungle. They whisper. You think I'm insane.
Sayid
I think you've been alone for too long.

I was about to post something along the lines of what Original Poster said, when I searched (yes...I did a 30 second search before posting) I found this. I totally agree with OP that Danielle was either with, or at least knows about Dharma.
But didn't she say she'd never seen the hatch when it was shown to her? This struck me as odd because she's been here for 16 years, and she knows her way around, and most likely would have come upon this hatch or another one.
So either she's lying to the lostaways or she just for some reason never came upon it, which I think is a little far-fetched.

The hatch that Danielle saw was the back door to the place. She could have been through the front door many times, and not seen the hatch.
I don't think she's been in the hatch though.

She will be.

Maybe they were the replacement crew for all the hatches if all the hatches are on the island

The Orientation video appears to show polar bears when discussing the different projects they had running, so that would seem to indicate that the bear came from Dharma.
I get the distinct impression that the bear was brought to the island by Dharma, and not the French science vessel.
If Dharma has not been back to the island since the early 80s (to drop off the Orientation video), then the bear must have been there for 20 years. Remember that the thing that took the pilot from the plane in season 1 was witnessed by Charlie. He is there when the polar bear is killed by Sawyer (or shortly after), and someone asks him if that could have killed the pilot. He says only if this is a miniature version or something else...
Given the scope of Dharma's projects and the presence of polar bears in the Orientation video, I would expect that the bear wasn't brought there to keep them company, but to be a part of one of their projects. This could be one of several bears.
Thinking about how large the pit Sawyer Sayid and Jin were put into with Ana Lucia, I wonder if there aren't more bears around...

It makes a ton more sense to me to have Danielle's group diggin' the pit(s), vs. our survivors.

Danielle arrived on the island more than 9 years after the hatch was built.

According to Danielle, the research vessel was three days out of Tahiti, got caught in a storm, and ran aground.
Also according to Danielle from her talk with Hurley in the episode "Numbers", she tells Hurley that her team heard the transmission repeating the numbers, so they changed course to investigate this transmission and shipwrecked. Afterwards her team continued to try to find the source of the transmission which eventually brought on the sickness. She then finally agreed with Hurley that the numbers were jinxed because it was because of those numbers they were brought to the island, and caused all her misery. So unless I'm misinterpreting what Danielle is saying, it doesn't sound like the intent of her science team was to come to the island in the first place.
Electromagnetism brought Danielles' ship off course, caused Desmond to run aground, casued the palvne to go 1000 miles off course.
Meteorology is behing possible climate control whcih would allow for poalr bears, unless the polar bears are holograms, like Jack's father and Walt talking backwards.
Just my take.

Yeay, according to the conversation she had with Sayid. She was part of a science team.
LostXphile says:Also according to Danielle from her talk with Hurley in the episode "Numbers", she tells Hurley that her team heard the transmission repeating the numbers, so they changed course to investigate this transmission and shipwrecked. Afterwards her team continued to try to find the source of the transmission which eventually brought on the sickness...She also says she changed the message. I'd still like to know where this took place.

I think this next part gives us some insight on how Danielle's mind is functioning.
Danielle doesn't mention the "numbers" in her account to Sayid --- she only does this with Hurley.
Why ??
Because Sayid doesn't know about the "numbers."
With Hurley, however, she acknowledges the existence of the "numbers" because the information is relevant to him.....

Yeah she called it a science vessel. Anyone else wonder wheres Danielles been lately?

I jsut found this 2 year old thread and have something really important to contribute. I don't know what Rousseau said, but Ensign Chekov said it was a "science wessel"
Well, we might get some answers soon.
And someone has to :bump: the dead. pre-dead.

Do you think that [EP 5] about makes a quick rap-up
of the Danielle 'sickness'-dropped-plot storyline ? :D

yes....and no. Something down the hole changed them, and quickly. Right after the french guy's arm was wripped off he yelled "I'm hurt. It's gone. Please help me." It was gone THAT quick??? And Robert was going to shoot Danielle. He had clearly changed.
So, I think/HOPE there is more to this sickness.
