Let's use our imagination for a bit. You have just found yourself strung up a tree, hands free, blindfolded, and slowly suffocating. First thing you try to do is stop the suffocating right? Then you probably take off the blindfold to assess the situation. Well Charlie didn't do any of this. he just sat there (well hung there) and killed himself. His hands were free and if you look closely at the shot of Kate trying to cut the rope, there is about a 6 inch gap between the knot and Charlie's neck. Which leads me to my theory:


Charlie was unconscious when he was hanged.

I think it means whoever hung him allowed him some wiggle room to possibly free himself

So it may have all been a set up? Wow, there's a thought. So maybe they did it so that they would be afraid what would happen to Claire if they kept going, but that way they wouldn't have had to kill him for good?

Another thing I thought of is how he could have been hanged. I figure there are three ways: drop him from the top of the tree, used a pulley type thing and pulled him up, or had him stand on something, tied the rope around his neck and then pulled whatever he was standing on out from under him. Obviously the third one is not going to work because he was unconscious. But the problem with hanging and why it's on the out as far as the death penalty is that if it's done perfectly the knot will snap the spine and kill you instantly, otherwise they slowly suffocate (like Charlie did) or the entire head pops off. Now that said they couldn't have dropped him from the top of the tree, because it would either snap Charlie's neck or popped off his head. So the only other possibility was dragging him up off the ground using a pulley type thing. But that wouldn't work either because his head would have fallen out of the loop.


So that all said HOW DID ETHAN HANG CHARLIE?

Yes, I think Charlie was unconscious when hanged. No, I don't think it was a set-up-- he effectively died. Yes, the producers didn't want to "really" kill him so they had his neck surrounded by a great deal of supportive vines, which eased the weight of his body. You are correct that there is really only one way he could have been hung.

My addition: the reason the Others didn't kill him outright was that they knew Jack would attempt a rescue, and thus give them time to disappear. So it was in their interest to slow down the process of suffocation.

They probably didn't really worry that much about him...after all, I doubt they expected him to be along with Claire who was "all they wanted." So they just wanted to get him out of way and yes, probably slow Jack down also.

BTW, this whole snapping spine, popping head thing is really morbid...hehehe :)
