I have been doing a little bit of reasearch on KELVIN - and possible connections or inspirations to the writers of Lost through historical figures.....:
The name Kelvin implies a relationship to science, referring to the Mathematician/Scientist/Engineer Lord William Thomson, a.k.a. Lord Kelvin, born in 1824.
Lord Kelvin was responsible for the Kelvin temperature scale and concepts of the Second Law of Thermodynamics especially those dealing with heat. It deals mainly with the concept of disorder, or entropy. In the TV show, disorder is reflected through societal behaviors. Essentially the law reads like this, and with regards to the show, it is of momentous importance:
In a closed system, disorder is usually created but never lost.
Lord Kelvin was also involved in engineering the laying the first ever transatlantic communications cable. If you recall in an earlier episode of season 1, Sayid was following a cable exiting from the sea and onto the island. The idea of "work" is another concept of Thermodynamics, which revealed itself in the episode when Locke was nearly pulled into the hole with the observance of mysterious steam clouds (heat) and the chains (mechanical work) pulling at Locke's leg.
Lord Kelvin was also the first to have operated a telegraph that could send characters every 3.5 seconds.
I quite enjoy the fact that quite a few charactors of Lost have connections to historical figures, scientists and philosophers alike......
A favorite quote:
The philosopher John Locke once wrote:
"Good and evil, reward and punishment, are the only motives to a rational creature: these are the spur and reins whereby all mankind are set on work, and guided."
I aloso have a suspicion that Ethan Rom and Kelvin were HATCH PARTNERS......when I have that sorted out in my head, I will post more, lol.....
Too much to think about.....
Cheers,
Kris
