I have a theory stemming from the mural with the picture of the eye followed by the words "M Sick".
While most people believe that this is figurative for "I am sick", I believe the mural may actually be more literal. I believe that there is a sickness around the island, maybe as a result of an experiment gone awry, that affects either the eye, or vision, or the perception of reality.
There are a large number of references to the eye in the show including close-up camera shots of people's eyes. I believe that these close-ups are an indication of the people who are sick or these segments are visions / memories that have been affected by the sickness. Hence, "the mind's eye" that Locke explained to Walt.
Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks for reading. :)
