i had a long very eloquent post crafted only to lose it in the regristation process (long time lurker first time poster)..so i'll keep this sweet and to the point.
are they on some sort of 'silent running' scenario? off in space somewhere on teh opposite side of the solar system than earth. danielle got there in a vessel, des was off around the world, theres manufactured (or branded)sharks?
anyway this is my only logical explanation as to why they see a mirror image of that star constellation.

It has been suggested that astronomical anomalities and the deviation of the north pole might be caused by the computer running the matrix. It applies the coordinates and constellation map from where the computer actually is, and not from where the survivor are in the VR.

Welcome to Lost-TV beergoggles. Please read the welcome forum and the posting guidelines and have fun. This is not really a theory, you can read the forum guidelines to see the definition, but it doesn't really belong in GD either.
If the island is anywhere in the solar system, the constellations will look the same. The sun and moon look normal, so it seems to be they're on earth. I don't know if the reveresed dipper is meant to be taken literally or not, but all other evidence points to them being on earth.

Not true for persons in an artificial gravity contained space station. Directionality loses all meaning and apparently the measures necessary to reorient inhabitants may include reversals of perspective as a by-product. Elsewhere I posted a link to a scholarly link that discussed this very issue.
I don't necessarily believe they're in space; I don't know where they are but we should keep the facts straight!

Look, they HAVE to do something. They're in Hawaii, north of the equator. The Island is possibly south of the equator, where the constellations would be different. Hence: digital sky.
But as we know, there are few things that occur on Lost that don't have meaning.

Hmmm, yeah, but that's not the problem. That they use a digital sky and that this is a digital constellation in not in question. The thing is they make that Dipper very special by focusing specifically on this image in those two rather long shots (actually it may be the same image that they reuse in the two episodes).

They would be seen at a different angle relatively to the horizon and to the azimut, but otherwise they would be the same, i.e. the positions of the stars relative to each other would be the same. A constellation would definitely never look reversed as if seen in a mirror (turned at an angle yes, not reversed, unless one actually looks at it in a mirror).
