View Full Version : Is Boone a Loon?

This is my first time posting on a fansite so I have to say I'm a little "lost" as to what I am doing. (Yeah...sadly that wasn't even funny in my head.)

So....I think its safe to say that Boone has since the beginning shown signs of being more postal then a self addressed envelope.

1. Lifeguard - Shut Down by Jack
2. Ingnored by Rose - Jack wasn't
3. Shannon will stay on the beach - HAHAHAHAHA, whatever
4. Takes the pistol - Manhood is pistol whipped and kate gets the pistol.
5. Hides the water = Almost mobbed by 46 thirsty and dirty lost people
6. Tries to save drowning women - "needed" rescuing by Jack instead

I'm sure that there are more examples but all you have to do is look into those troubled, unmedicated eyes and see that this kid needs to be the hero and is thwarted at every attempt. I just look at him and see that kid who was so miserable because as hard as he tried he was just never quite good enough.

Seems like a perfect person to become the nemesis to our heroes who have no idea of this jealousy and anger until its too late. No one sets out to be evil, but many believe that we all are products of out enviroment.

Or else I think way too much and should leave out the "I love Shannon!" and " Shannon is good and Boone is evil" Old as time its self Good vs Evil, Blonde vs Brunette, child of darkness and child of light."

Thanks for not hating too much. If everyone disagrees...uhhhh...ummmm yeah was just testin' out your old speculatin' reflexes

There are a few of us that have tried to cut Boone a little slack (mostly mothers I imagine). But as far as your analysis goes, you'll find alot of people here agreeing with you.

Boone is the New England private school bleeding heart liberal type and his sister Shannon is the New England private school spoiled priss type.

Hmm...let's see what you're saying.

Do you mean to say that Boone is trying incredibly hard to become the hero, but keeps getting shut down?

That whole thing didn't make a ton of sense to me, so I'll translate it simply for my own mental health, and if I get it wrong, then, may I be smote where I stand:

Boone's goal on the whole is to be the hero. It always has been, which is why he signed up to be a lifeguard (not in your theory, but methinks it works :D ). Now, however, he has met his match in Jack. Evidence:

Rose opened up only to Jack, not to Boone.
Takes the pistol to be guard the group, then it somehow ends up in a woman's hands.
Hides the water so that he can ration it out to the survivors, and is almost lynched by psychotic survivors.
He leaps out to save the drowning woman, and he himself needs saving.

Is that what you're saying? That Boone wants to be the hero that Jack is? Because in that case, I must agree wholeheartedly with you

Yep...its always the quiet bleeding heart do gooders who just can't take it anymore and snap. ARRRRGGGHH

Shannon on the other hand....I get why most would like to see her all comatose after accidentally poisoned by the fish charlie unknowingly gave her...but come on...shes a smart, resourceful girl who may be spoiled but is determined and will fight for herself and I think in time others.

Cordelia Chase: Tact is for people who are afraid to tell the truth. Who needs it?....

...and she became a higher power like goddess and a princess...see anything is possible:)

only 44 people could have potentially lynched Boone the Loon.

azteclady
10-25-04, 01:44 AM
Baron X, it was only 43 - we must exclude Boone himself, Jack (who stopped the lynching), and Locke, who hadn't gotten back from his water-locating expedition.

I stopped watching Angel when Cordelia didn't wake up - that sucked...

JacksGirl,

Sorry to disappoint you *shuffling feet* but I stopped watching Angel regularly after that season finale when what's his face (his son, Connor was it?) is erased from all their memories, and they 'become' the evil lawyer corporation...

I saw a couple of Spike episodes (there was one without clothes... *sigh* so dreamy...), but I had really lost interest by then.

Do you still love me?

How do you know he was not back yet? And you actually think his sister would help with the lynching? Wow you're mean.

ColLocke
10-25-04, 01:59 AM
If Locke was back (I'd assume that that's what you mean), people wouldn't be lynching him in the first place, because THEY WOULD THEN HAVE WATER, and not have to worry so much about rationing it.

Vicki

I saw the return ep, it was good but I rather lost my liking for Cordelia ever since Season 3 where she became the whole "motherly talks-wayyy-too-much" character. And don't even get me started on Season 4.

Anyway, Boone didn't even go talk to Rose or attempt to, if I remember correctly. He was just trying to tell other people about what he noticed about it and WANTED Jack to go do it instead of him.

I like your play on words with Boone and Loon but what does failed attempts at being a hero have to do with being a "loon?"

ColLocke
10-25-04, 02:01 AM
Maybe he's implying that that Boone's a big fan of the Who?

Sorry, bad joke

JacksGirlfriend

aztec: Of course I still love you (oh oh, I've done it now - people will be talking). But seriously if you ever have the chance you have to see that episode. It is uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time and the acting was exceptional for that episode.

Spike without a shirt... very nice. Definitely worth tuning in for.

I liked Angel better in the early days, before the giant organized evil days. Charmed was better before they did the same thing.

JacksGirlfriend
10-25-04, 02:16 AM
I liked Angel better in the old days too. And because they were so rushed at the end, they never even got into the old "Wolf-Ram-Hart" angle. I wanted to hear the entire story. Man, I'm feeling cheated all over again.

BaronX,

I'm not the mean one, she is! *chuckle*

Seriously, I think she would not have physically participated in the lynching. Not because it would have been her brother being beaten to a bloody pulp, but for the same reason she batted her eyelashes at Charlie earlier: why do it yourself when there are others who'll do it for you? Seems to me that's her life motto.

And remember, she was THIRSTY alongside everybody else (as far as we know), and I don't think our Shannon takes to discomfort of any kind easily.

Back off, people! I'm exaggerating... a bit. *shrug* I don't like Shannon and so far don't see any redeeming qualities there.

She did give herself a manicure, if she was very, very spoiled she would not know how. That is the closest I can come to defending her.

JacksGirlfriend
10-25-04, 02:29 AM
Baron - You know what? I never even thought of that. How did you?

JacksGirl

Baron X
10-25-04, 02:34 AM
It's what I do.

uh...not manicures.......I meant thinking of things is what I do.

JacksGirlfriend
10-25-04, 02:37 AM
I like thinking of things too, but it never crossed my mind that a spoiled rich girl was doing her own nails... and I'm a female. That's a little telling I think. Maybe things have been a little rough and she couldn't afford her weekly manicures. Maybe she was cut off from the family funds. Hence, the attitude.

So... you think of things... like for your job? Or your hobby? Or just because you obsess?

JacksGirl

Baron X
10-25-04, 03:03 AM
Hobby, brain is always on. I am constantly asked "How do you think of these things? I bet you just sit around and think this stuff up". Like thinking is a bad thing or something. Oddly it seems most people I meet are unable to think and do something else at the same time. I've had people complain that I make them think too much. Always nice to meet other thinkers.

example: I wonder why we say "get on the plane" when we actually get IN the plane. Most people blink at me. Same for "on the bus" , but you don't say "on the car".

ColLocke
10-25-04, 03:06 AM
actually, I'm exactly the same way. I think about things all the time, and people are convinced that I'm clinically insane because I can think and act at the same time.

Baron X
10-25-04, 03:16 AM
Unless you think so much you are physically unable to act or move, how can you be thinking too much. I always wonder if I could read minds what I would hear from these people. Just a faint humming noise from most people I guess.

ColLocke
10-25-04, 03:25 AM
lol, I agree. But if either of us could read minds, we'd probably end up thinking about what they're thinking too much, and it would just aggravate the nonexistent problem

JacksGirlfriend

I want to know if any of you can actually hear your brain working. Like the wires are humming. This happens to me all the time.

And I have always wondered "how the other half lives" because I swear every time I open my mouth people say "Where do you come up with stuff like that?" I say "You don't think things like this?" And they roll their eyes and say, "No, it's only you."

But my son is the same - when he was about 3 he woke up and came downstairs. He said "Mommy, I can't sleep because my brain won't turn off."

My brain never turns off. It's amazing I can sleep at all. And even then I dream constantly.

It always amazes me how people accept input, but don't use it. If I am watching TV with 'normal' people, I watch the commercials and think that was stupid or that was funny they actually think I am going to be motivated to buy that product based on that. Or I think isn't that the actor from the beer commercial? Or 'Hey that's Gene Hackman's voice on the Lowe's commercial...' The people in the room with me, even though they have just stared at the same TV I was looking at, if I ask them a question about the commercial they will have no idea what I am talking about. It's like hanging out with pod people.

JacksGirlfriend
10-26-04, 12:48 AM
I work with an entire batch of pod people. And my husband has an occasional pod moment, like he'll watch an entire movie and at the end go "Did you get that at all?" or we'll watch a commercial and he'll say "What are they selling?" At that point I couldn't possibly begin to explain it, I just roll my eyes and go to sleep.

Fortunately my kids are just like me (which is why my husband doesn't understand any of us).

JacksGirl

Baron X
10-26-04, 12:58 AM
My wife is kind of the opposite, one of us will change channels to something in progress, we both have been watching it for the exact same amount of time but she will ask me 'why did she stab him?' :rolleyes Sometimes there is a lot of pressure put on us thinkers.

JacksGirlfriend
10-26-04, 01:19 AM
Baron: Oh, my god, my sides hurt!! Are you sure your wife and my husband aren't twins? And do you ever wonder how you ended up with her in the first place? My husband is my exact opposite. We could not be more different if we tried.

In the stabbing case, I just make something up. Sometimes I'm actually right.

JacksGirl

Baron X
10-26-04, 01:47 AM
I just stare at her until she realizes what she said. Sometimes I will create an elaborate tale that explains how this poor woman was driven to the desperate decision to take a life. Then it's her turn to stare at me.

JacksGirlfriend
10-26-04, 01:54 AM
Staring does occasionally work - but sometimes it's more like a deer caught in the headlights and it's just so pitiful. Most of the time, even when I do try to explain, he just shakes his head and says "That was a waste of two hours if that's all it was." This is the same man that can watch a movie like Armageddon and turn it off with only fifteen minutes left. He's just plain insane.

Have you checked your email?

JacksGirl

My wife has just gotten lazier over the years, she used to think, but now she does not bother, from her point of view it is just easier to ask me then apply the effort.

Back to Boone. If he was concerned the water was unguarded because Jack had left, the smarter thing to do would have been to stay with the water in the nice shady tent. Only an idiot would remove the water so that nobody could have any.

azteclady
10-26-04, 03:56 AM
Only an idiot - which Boone most certainly is!

His whole secrecy bit as a call for attention but he doesn't have the stones (pardon the euphemism) to do the 'leader' thing publicly (i.e, I'll ration the water because we have so little left). Instead he slithers.

Same with the gun, when they camped coming back from the hike.

You know, I've been thinking for a while that Boone's going to "go evil." From the first episode, it's been made out that Boone's the "good child" and Shannon's the "brat," but that's just too easy and too obvious. Like you pointed out, Boone's been showing major signs of wanting to be a hero, but he can't quite do it. He doesn't have the full-fledged cajones, so to speak. So I see him getting more and more bitter, and more and more prone to making bad decisions that look like good decisions on the surface, until he's finally made the trip over to full-on bad guy.

Shannon, meanwhile, will somehow reform her princessy ways and end up being a useful contributor to the island society. I have asked this of the Magic 8-Ball, and the Magic 8-ball has said, "Yea." And so it shall be. *solemn bow*

;) M

Azriel
10-27-04, 04:38 AM
mnemo, I've got the same feeling about Shannon and Boone. I have this idea that the reason they both come from wealth, but are so different, is because Boone's parents expected him to learn responsibility from the ground up so he could prove his worth to take over the family business, while Shannon was just expected to be the pretty princess and marry well.

I think being on the island is going to be a reality check for Shannon because she is basically a good person, but is unbelievably spoiled. I think the added pressure on Boone who is emotionally geared to prove himself is just going to make him self-destruct and turn hard and cold.

Baron X
10-27-04, 04:58 AM
Do you think Boone was any more successful at not screwing up everything he touches before he came to the island?

Azriel
10-27-04, 05:31 AM
NO! I think he has always tried hard and still missed the mark. Can you tell that I don't like Boone? If anyone has to be 'it' food, I hope it's him. ;)

Vicki
