I don't think the Aisan couple is married.
Did you see how she looked at him after he said "that is what a husband does"?
Hmmm.
Either they aren't married, or he is trying to rub it in that he IS her husband.
Very Curious.

They don't seem to be a very well-established married couple.
Maybe he bought her? Or it was arranged without much regard for her?
I wonder what they were doing in Australia. So maybe she had gone there to get away from him and he tracked her down.
Yes they are a very strange couple. I don't like HIM at all. He's a MCP. And I have a feeling he probably bought her too. She keeps giving him this look like, "You aren't my husband." What if they're brother and sister and he's trying to act as her husband, just to protect her. :eek

I think it was an arranged couple, for a business deal maybe.

That was a suspicious look she gave him. Maybe they aren't married. Or maybe he's a horrible husband in some other respect and she was shocked to hear him explaining what good husbands do.
Seems like a normal asian couple to me.
wife = obedient and miserable , husband = protective

I personally don't think we've had enough face time with them as a couple to begin to create a backstory, but even if we think we do...
Unless someone with traditional Korean background (or who has lived in Korea) can tells us that this is off to him/her, who are we to say they are not married?
It's a substantially different culture, and I think that for most of us, what we see in TV or movies is what we know - in other words, hardly reliable.
I'm willing to wait and see.

but I'm happy reading other people's theories... :lol

They are married. Damon LIndelof told us that in our phone interview a couple of months ago. Plus I think it says so in one of the upcoming episode descriptions

The asian guy confirmed it last night when he said "thats what a husband does." When his wife thanked him for getting her the water.

Over on the Spoilers forum, there are some stills from this week's episode, House of the Rising Sun. And in the pictures, the "husband" looks so relaxed and happy. They look so happy together, and he obviously spoils and indulges her. So what happened to make them so tense and secretive?
Was she a prostitute before he married her? Was she another man's wife and ran away with this man? The one thing that I predict is that she has a child that she had to leave behind for whatever reason.

It seems to me that she would be far more hysterical about being stuck on that island if she had a child off somewhere. She's way too calm to be a mother separated from her young child (has to be young since she is). I'll be surprised if she turns out to be a mother.

I really think it has everything to do with Korea and Asia in general being a completely different culture than the one we're used to. I assume most of us live in North America, and due to that fact we see their relationship is bad and see him as being a horrible husband who mistreats his wife. That just isn't the case. It's the same thing as when we see Arab women fully covered from head to toe. It seems horrible to us, but it's their custom.

I agree with WalkingCarpet; being Asian myself, I'm not surprised by the way Jin treats his wife. Of course, such behavior is rapidly disappearing in the modernization of Asia, but misogynism is still quite prevalent in the more conservative portions of society.

Count me among those who believe this is an arranged marriage.
"That's what husbands do" doesn't sound to me like someone would say after years and years in marriage.
And...no kids, it seems? They never mention them.

In Jack's flasback to the ticket counter in Australia, we see the "husband" standing in line behind Jack. We do not see the "wife" anywhere. True, she could've been somewhere waiting for him. Or, maybe they never met before the crash. He could just be a very alpha type guy. He did say they don't need anyone else. He may just be trying to protect her in his own way. maybe he thinks the husband/wife thing will keep other men away from her. She is definitely timid and just wants someone to tell her what to do. Maybe she goes along with this because he is the only one she can talk to.

I think they are married. From what they show us, she was a more free person with a full personality before. It is probably stripper syndrome. A guy is attracted to the stripper girl because she is hot and he is competitive and wants to win her over the other males. So she is good enough before marriage to deserve his attention. But once he has his prize, most guys do not want anyone else being attracted to their wives for fear of losing their hard won trophy, so they have their wives not wear make up, dress as a librarian and stifle their personality to keep them off radar. It is an insecurity issue.

Could it have been an arranged marriage? We are thinking complicated, but maybe it's more simple than that. Maybe it was arranged and they hardly knew each other before getting married and going on this trip together.
Jin says "That's what husbands do," when Sun thanks him for the water. As if he didn't know why she wouldn't have expected it of him. As if they were almost strangers.
In the spoiler photos, Sun is shown throwing something away in the trash bin in the airport. Perhaps letters and photos from someone she loved before marrying Jin? It has been suggested that she made a decision before getting on the plane- perhaps the decision was to put away her past and try to make her marriage to Jin work.

Maybe that is to deep, what if she is a clepto? or pick pocket?

Iseult: The decision could also have been that she was going to leave her husband once they got to the States.
I think they might be staying together just as long as they need each other. I think that they (or perhaps only she) might be trying to flee North Korea, perhaps simply for political asylum, perhaps actually as defectors. This would explain why they were flying Sydney to LA, a very strange route for a Korean couple (I assume it is easier to get travel permits to go to Australia than the States from the DPRK). This would also explain why they were so concerned about staying seperate after the crash; they are trying to make sure that nobody knows who they are well enough to send them back to Korea.
I have nothing really to support this theory but a hunch; opinions?

Are they definetely from North Korea? I had assumed it was South Korea but i have nothing to back that up, alot of things i'm thinking about those two will probably change depending upon which part of korea their from. Does anyone have any direct linkage?

Jin is holding a red passport in White Rabbit. I think South Korean passports are a green-blue.

Radagst--I'm with you on the political refugee status. Could be that Sun married Jin to escape. However, the pictures from their upcoming ep

suggest they were very happy once
END SPOILER
But there are still a number of ways that the political refugee angle could play into their situation.
Okay, well, tonight's episode cleared this up. They ARE married, but she was planning on leaving him. That explains a lot. There was an article in this week's TV guide about LOST(gee that's 2 write-ups about this wonderful show in TV guide since the show began) There's a section of the article that talks about "The castaways may actually be dead and stranded in an island purgatory." The paragraph goes on to say........"At least that's one theory that has fans buzzing, though, naturally, Abrams will neither confirm nor deny." (Could it be from THIS board where that buzz is going on???) IF this IS what's going on, then maybe the Korean couple has to get their marriage in order before moving out of purgatory. I personally don't buy it, and it would ruin it for me. *which I've posted to another thread here.*
OH yeah, and what was up with hubby coming home with blood all over himself???? Perhaps he was a hit-man for daddy-dearest?????
