i thought everyones first reaction to the hatch was very interesting. hurley and rousseau were amazed by it, and they both decided that it was best for the hatch to be opened. jack and locke felt the same way.
the only exception was sayid, he was the one trying to convince everyone to leave the hatch alone. (i realize walt didnt want to open the hatch as well, but i think his circumstances are different because of his powers.)
so my theory is that everyone has used the numbers in their past- everyone that is except for sayid. in sayid's backstory there were lots of numbers involved including 18, 300, 7, 6, 3, etc. but none of these numbers are part of THE sequence.
and i think the hatch might have some type of power of attraction over the people who have used the numbers, it is luring them into a trap, kind of like how a venus fly trap attracts bugs and then kills them for food
however, sayid never used the numbers. he wasnt even originally supposed to be on flight 815. so he is the only one not entranced by the hatch.
and i think that either he is going to have to save everyone else, or everyone else is going to kill him...
