I did a quick search and found nothing on this, so treat me gently if this is a dupe, but I re-watched episode 21 last night and noted that the terrorist cell was playing "Half-Life" (presumably on an X-Box or PS-2, I didn't get a great look). Could this be a slight clue dropped by the producers?
Half-Life tells the story of Gordon Freeman, a researcher at the top-secret Black Mesa lab in New Mexico. The lab is responsible for an experiment with teleportation that goes awry and creates rifts between ours and an alien dimension.
I know it's a bit of a stretch, but maybe they were signalling that there was some sort of teleportation experiment going on/performed at the Island. Perhaps the Oceanic flight got caught in some sort of field generated by the experiment and torn apart.
Just musing.
