View Full Version : Pandora's Box

It starts to sound like the Greek (or Roman???) myth of Pandora's Box.Pandora and her husband, as well as the rest of mankind live in utopia (Eden). Pandora was intrigued by a box made of obsidian (black rock like the ones alluded to in the show). Every time she neared the box she could hear whispers (the cast hear whispers when they are alone in the jungle). Her curiosity gets the best of her and she opens it just to let out all the evil and diseases into the world. The French Chick says that all her crew got sick when they went near the rock.

Just thought it was interesting. Not sure what the #'s have to do with it. Maybe they are the combination to the box????

I dont think it is the literal pandora's box.
I think its more of an extended mataphor.

The writers may just be using this symbolically-i.e the hatch shouldn't be opened because it will bring something bad, but it will be opened because of the hope that something good is in there.

This thread needs to be resurected. I am copying a new post from another thread. Welcome to season 2.

In the story of Pandora's box the box is opened to release all of the evils in the world. When Pandora opens the box a second time all that is left inside is Hope.

In S2, episode 1 "Man Of Science, Man Of Faith" Jack's father talks about giving Hope. There are then numerous references to Hope in this episode.

In season 1 someone (Boone or Jack?) asks Locke what he thinks is inside, Locke says he thinks there is hope inside.

4,8,15,16,23,42 when converted to letters spells dHOPw? (the drug Desmond injects himself with is actually labelled CR 4-8 15 16-23 42... so could be For - HOP - ......).

I'm sure this has been discused many times but I think the hatch is pandora's box. And walt can see the this is why he warned locke not to open the hatch. Just a thought.

Sounds like a porno version of the old Bewitched TV show I once saw.

Wait a minute... that one was called Endora's box. Mea Culpa

Wait a minute... that one was called Endora's box.
Was it co-starring Richard's Hatch?

This thread is now in shambles.

NB: the rather naughty post attributed to boonian above is really me. My apologies to any fellow posters I've harmed in my negligence, and especially to my dear friend BA, who's reputation should not be tainted by my feeble attempts at bathroom humor.

I am so PC with jokes like that. However on an older version of Hoyle's Card Games (for pc's) there is a Quebecois character called Maurice who delusionally speaks with and about his beaver puppet, who talks with and about Maurice. I did make a reference once about Maurice with his hand up a beaver. The joke was obvious but carried limited laughter viability. I prefer gay jokes of this ilk myself, as I have done many of the acts refered to.;)

Ok.. now outside of my usual method of operation.. I am just going to leave "beaver puppet" alone.

One day you will all thank me for just letting that one go.

I am thanking you now.;)

My retelling that little tale has led me to a visual that I had not anticipated. I will leave a description to the healthy (or unhealthy) imagination of the individual reader.

Perhaps it is time to end this thread that the author quite probably did not intend to trail off so iniquitously. One of the dangers of joining this our cast of lostaways.

I wonder if whatever the Black rock brought to the island - perhaps it was transferred to the hatch?

Sorry if this has been said before, I don't want to look at other threads incase I ruin my own enjoyment of working stuff out, but I can back up that this is Pandora's box.

Other than the obvious, which is that no one knew what was in there and little clues that it's something very bad in there (the kid saying to Lock 'DON'T open it and other little hints), I noticed on second watching something Lock says to Hugo.

Hugo asks him wat Lock thinks is down there. Lock says 'Hope. I think Hope is down there'.

The story of Pandora's Box goes that after all the evils and sins of the world etc are released, Pandora takes another look inside and at the bottom is a spirit called Hope.

So maybe Lock is being too curious and potentially going to lead to the end of the Earth, but he see through it perhaps.

I know this because I've done a lot of research on the subject for a Musical project. In fact I've just remembered - the Black Rock is what Prometheus was tyed to as vultures ate his livers over and over after it grows back daily for thousands of years or something.

I've only just come up with this theory so I'll look into it more, but I'm convinced the writers have been heavily influenced by this line of mythology.

Sorry if i don't reply to your threads because I'm scared to read them but let me know what you think of this theory! In fact I'll go as far as saying it's not a theroy, but what it is!

I must admit this Lost is too addictive.. lost a nights sleep over the first series.. and cant wait for numer ep 10 series 2 to come out.. anyway i thought i would share what i feel is the backbone of this series.. Has anyone heard of the myth of pandoras box.. well i thought for some reason it seemed similar to some of the feature on lost.. so i googled it.. and this is what i got:

"According to Edith Hamilton in Mythology the source of all misfortune was Pandora's curiosity. "The gods presented her with a box into which each had put something harmful, and forbade her ever to open it. Then they sent her to Epimetheus, who took her gladly although Prometheus had warned him never to accept anything from Zeus. He took her, and afterward when that dangerous thing, a woman, was his, he understood how good his brother's advice had been. For Pandora, like all women, was possessed of a lively curiosity. She had to know what was in the box. One day she lifted the lidand out flew plagues innumerable, sorrow and mischief for mankind. In terror Pandora clapped the lid down, but too late. One good thing, however, was thereHope. It was the only good the casket had held among the many evils, and it remains to this day mankind's sole comfort in misfortune."

now... is it me or does that all seem extremely familiar

anyway.. would like to hear what u think and if anyone has any other nice theories let me know.. p.s have a sneaky feeling boone will be back.. am hoping shanon will be too ;)

If you're looking for theories you might try the Theories and Speculations area. Be fore warned, before posting a new thread there search carefully, since most topics -- like Pandora's Box -- have already been discussed there.

This topic will likely end up moved to "What I think is going on... " It is a more relaxed area where theories can get rehashed (frequently to ad naseum) and smaller observations about Lost kicked about.

Welcome to the board pandorasbox. Please read the welcome forum, look around, and have fun.

I did a boolean search on
pandora* +box
and found several threads on the subject. I took the opportunity to merge them all together. Be sure and try the search feature here. It's pretty good if you give it a try.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I look at it as a metaphor though. And note tha Locke did work at a box company. I believe there may be a link between the two.

The numbers good question. The numbers are actually a code. 4=D 8=H 15=A 16=R 23=M 42=A DHARMA. Ifound that out on this one site. I could show you it, I just needto find.

Scanning through this thread I didn't see this, although it's probably been mentioned before, but when Hurley tells Lenny he used the numbers to win the lottery, Lenny says "You've opened the box!", likely implying Pandora's Box.
