I read the posting rules, and I hope this qualifies to post here, since it discusses some of the upcoming photos and such.
Anyway, my guess on the island is that it's a survivalist resort of some kind, and that everything that's happening is for the benefit of one person on the plane - Locke.
One photo shows him wearing (http://home.netcom.com/~tsolis/100943_8100_ful.jpg) a compass, two knives, and what looks to be a fisherman's vest. Another shows him gathering (http://lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=16&pos=35) water from a hanging leaf, into a water bottle. The case of knives he finds seems to be spec'd as belonging to him, and it wouldn't surprise me if it was.
Another thing is, he doesn't seem to be disappointed at all to be stranded on an island. He seems genuinely happy to be there. It could be just a form of shock due to living through a plane crash, some kind of "happy just to be alive" type of thing, but what if it isn't?
What if the entire premise of the island is that you pay some kind of fee, to enter the survivalist game of a lifetime, to live out the rest of your life on a manufactured isolated environment, where random dangers come upon you. The only rule is that you can never leave the island. You don't know where the island is, or how you'll get there.
This explains the polar bear - it was brought there to be one of the random dangers. Who would expect a polar bear attack on a South Pacific island?
Some of the spoiler posts in this thread could support this, as well. The general consensus seems to be that no one on the "outside" can get to them. No one seems to have considered this may be because the island is simply heavily guarded against outside influence, other than what is 'allowed' to get in, like the delivery of the polar bear and the plane crash itself.
The french recording, too. "It killed them... it killed them all." The spec is that the "It" is the giant creature roaming the island. That doesn't necessarily mean it's correct. "It" could be the game itself, and the french survivor could be the last of the previous group on the island that played the game.
This also satisfies the "no supernatural" aspect of the series. It's all man-made.
Locke has been shown to have some knowledge of strategy - knowing the origin of backgammon shows a deep interest in games. He has survivalist knowledge. He seems to be comfortable with his surroundings, even happy to be on the island. One telling point will be if his backstory is never shown, and at this point, given the spoilers, it won't be for at least the first 6 or so episodes.
It's a crazy theory, but it satisfies a lot of the given info by the writer/producer interviews.
