The title certainly fits if it is about Jin.

The ellipse at the beginning of "...In Translation" obviously stands for "Lost", so is there any significance to it being missing or is it just a fortuitous play on words?

I think the reason they can't write "Lost in Translation" is because of that movie, lost in translation, with Bill Murray. It's a copywrited title already - so they can't use it.

"Lost in Translation" is a common phrase. You might be able to get a copyright, but you'd have a tough time defending it.

Interesting! The word "translation" also can mean "change". Does this title perhaps mean that the show "LOST" is about to undergo some change?

Hi!
Somewhere I heard that Sun is going to disappear... ala Claire... Maybe this is the episode that it will happen! :(

Maybe the reason that the word "Lost" is missing from the title ".....In Translation" is because Jin isn't lost in the barrier of his language anymore because it turns out he can speak english, or he finds out Sun can. Who knows though? Its so hard to tell w/ this show.... Then again, the copyright theory makes perfect sense as well, so I'm not entirely sure what I believe. All I know is its probably going to be several weeks before any of us know for sure what the deal is....... *sigh*

You go into "my control center" and somewhere it says, "Your Picture". Link to the pic you want to appear under your name. Make sure you check the box that says include my pic with posts...
If you don't want it to appear, you can uncheck the box "include personal photo" before you hit the 'add reply' button.
Many of these folks are on other ez boards, and once you set it up the same avatar appears on any ez board you go to.:)
That's the only way I know how to do it and it took a bit of playing with the controls to figure it out. Not a techie!:p

If Sun is captured......imagine Jin going off. I feel bad for Ethan if he is the one that is going to capture Sun.
how do u get an avatar?
Go to the Help Desk forum. There is an explanation there, and just because mine is broken, well, dont pay attention to that :)

I thought "Lost" was missing from the title of the episode because it is already the name of the show. So it will show (like say, on TiVo) "LOST (2005) ...In Translation", so it's kinda funny.

Can a movie title even be copyrighted? Plenty of films that have no relation to each other share the same exact title. Just look at the 15 or so cinematic works that share the title Lost. The only exclusivity in the entertainment business as far as naming goes seems to be musical group names, which may have to do with the arcane ASCAP/BMI requirements for music publishing, although for some reason bands that haven't recorded a single note of music get hit with cease-and-desist orders if another band has already taken their name.
Then again, I don't exactly see anybody anywhere in the world making a movie called "Star Wars," but that may have to do with it being a trademark™, which is a lot harder to secure than a copyright.

No title for a movie, book, or song can be copywrited.

Hopefully, ...in translation will finally allow us to see what's been going on with Jin the whole time. We've seen him through the eyes of Sun, but maybe we could see it the other way around. What does Jin do for Sun's father? Why was he on the flight? What has he actually been saying/plotting/planning on the island?

Maybe the absence of the word lost in the title implies, that Jin isn't lost(in translation). I.e. He can speak English.

Official episode description...
When the raft the survivors have been building mysteriously burns down, Michael is convinced that Jin is responsible for the sabotage, which only further escalates their rivalry. Meanwhile, Sun stuns her fellow survivors with a surprising revelation, and Boone gives Sayid a warning about Shannon.

looks like someone beat me to the punch, but in the spoiler photos for Ep 17, it looks like Jin is blamed for burning the raft down (i think it would have been Locke), and the survivors go after Jin, torturing him ala Sawyer in Ep 8. i think sun has to speak english to defend him, and say she was with him the whole time, or just to defend him to say that he didn't do it.

Yes i saw sun defending jin, in the trailers for this episode, and revealing her English to all.
I don't know if this is important or not but Lost in Translation, is also the tittle of a novel about Jew's immigrating to America.
I thought maybe it was The Others that burned the raft since maybe they don't want anyone to leave??

01-26-05, 12:15 PM
Michw, i like that theory. But why would the others want them to stay? It would also be intresting if one of the extra's burnt the boat, it's a good way to introduce a new charichter.
Also is anyone else bothered by the Gilligen island boat subplot?
Well, if they are doing some sort of expirament or testing, as some have theorized, then they would want them all to stay. Maybe it's part of the "island" wanting to keep them there.
whatever
01-27-05, 01:00 AM
Maybe it was Sayid that burned down the boat. Like Danielle- he coudn't let the sick people leave the Island...or whatever that means.

I think they can both speak English-remember how obvious it was to us as an audience that Sun could? Because she would sort of smile and nod and speak back? Well, in the last episode (or maybe two ago-I can't keep up), when HUrley was talking to him, he was doing the same thing and the first thought I had was that he could speak English too and how funny it was that they were both keeping it from each other and everyone else (pretty much). All I know is, if he can, he probaly had a hard time not saying anything when Hurley said "Your wife's hot!" :rollin
As for the fire, check out my post on page two for "OUtlaws" since it was brought up there.......my theory is it was Walt that did it.

I just had a thought: Why would Ethan kidnap Clair if The scientist are in charge of the island? But i really like the whole Walt theory.
Also I think one of the other survivors will discover that Locke pre Island coudn't walk, and that somehow that is significant

I totally agree with you on that. While I was watching that ep- I knew that Jin atleast understood what Hurley was saying, especially about the peeing part. I think Jin speaks English.

On ABC's Lost Website, when you click on "Show Info", then click "About The Show, Learn More About Lost" there is an general summary of the series' premise. Part of it describes Jin and Sun.
"Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sun (Yunjin Kim) are a Korean couple whose traditions, values and language are foreign and thus causes much to get lost in the translation."

I agree that i don't think Jin burned down the raft. I think that maybe Walt gets upset at his dad and causing the burning, or maybe its the Others.
It's obvious that Jin didn't burn the raft (why would he? he has nothing against going off the island). Sun will speak in English to defend the Jin, because it looks as if Sawyer and Michael are really giving Jin the smackdown...and how come all everyone does is watch? That's so cruel. Anyway, the raft burned down either because of Walt's special ability, Locke (or Boone through Locke's orders, and remember how Locke led Sayid astray by saying that Sawyer was the one who hit him on the head? We still don't know if it actually was Sawyer, or if it was Ethan, one of the others, or Locke himself), Ethan, or the others. Ethan or the others probably want them to be stranded, if only to make Claire stay on the island. Locke, of course, has the incentive of being able to walk on the island, and, plus, he has a cult leader status now. Walt, if he did it, was probably by "accident" by saying that he wished he didn't have to work on the raft or that he could hang around Locke some more, but I don't think Walt did it because he looks really hurt that all his hard work went to waste.

I think Walt did it, but you are right-I think it was an accident. His thoughts make things happen, but they may not always be what he wants to happen-hence the plane crash-I still say he caused that unintentionally as well. What is with that kid?
And I have been wondering that same thing now, that if they do both speak English, I wonder how they will reveal it to each other......I just worry about his obvious hot-headed temper! Maybe the reason he gets into it with Micheal is b/c he (JIn) starts beating on Sun-he's mad at her for hiding it (but I guess it's okay that he hid it from her) and he starts yelling at her (probably doesn't hit her-although I wouldn't be surprised at a face slap) and then Micheal steps in., etc etc. God, I love Wednesdays!! So many theories, so little time....

I can't help but wonder if it was Rosseau that burned down the raft... as she told Sayid to be careful of those who wanted to leave the island (she might have been afraid that the others could use the raft in such a manner)... not to mention this could fit in with the description we have of the next episode "Numbers"...

I feeling kinda skittish about Boone 'warning' Sayid about Shannon. Now I know that Shayid is not everyone's favourite couple, espeically since so little is known about Shannon. But the fact that Boone is actually warning Sayid again worries me. But I really dug the couple and to have a stick thrown in the wheel so soon bothers me.
I thought that Boone-doggy was "over" his obession with his step-sister... Or is this one of this things that will drag on for ever?
Just me?

Maybe Boone's warning Sayid about Shannon is not a threat, but an actual warning. Boone knows that his "sister" is trouble, and anyone getting involved with her is inviting trouble into his life. Boone could tell Sayid about Shannon's manipulative, conniving past.
sexy baby mama
02-16-05, 07:15 PM
Yes, I totally agree! Boone's warning is not "Stay away from my sister." Remember, he already told Sayid that. This warning is something new - probably about Shannon's manipulative nature, maybe something worse.
But no, I don't think Boone and Shannon are over. Like Maggie Grace said in an interview (I probably read this on EOnline or spoilerfix) "It may never die." I think Boone is not "under her spell" anymore, but there is still something there.
Does anyone know what was said during the preview? I especially want to know what Locke said. Was he defending Jin or something like that?
SWAG: Boone's warning is that Shannon is pregnant.
SWAG #2: Kate is also pregnant.
Sun, Claire, Kate, and Shannon, preggers. The island wants their Lord of the Flies children.

I like the Rosseau theory, also. The reason being is the description of the next episode. If they're correct, Hurley becomes obsessed with the French Woman. Maybe he knows something that she did?

The title "Lost... In Translation" is simply a joke because of the movie. Someone sets Michael's raft on fire, and everyone suspects Jin. Sun has to defend him because he doesn't speak English. Hence the "Lost in Translation" joke. He doesn't know what's going on, so he is lost... in translation. The others can't speak Korean, so they are lost in translation as well. Sun is the only one who can speak both languages, and I think in this episode, she will reveal her secret to stop them from beating Jin up.
