I'm just wondering what sort of life that Sawyer experienced.

We know that his parents died, tragically, when he was 8 or 9 years old due to a confidence man's scheme.

So, this means that he was raised by either relatives, friends of his family or an orphanage. Whichever of these things happened, it created a great vulnerability in him that he tries to cover up with a tough guy image.

But that facade breaks up, as happened when he saw the little boy of Jess's and David's that reminded him of himself at that age and caused him to abandon his confidence scheme.

I think he might have been verbally abused if not beaten as a child because he says twice the same phrase at two different times to Jack and Sayid: "Is that all you got?" when Jack was hitting him and then when Sayid was torturing him. I'm thinking maybe an authority figure had taunted him with this phrase while he was growing up.

I think he experienced a poor existence growing up. At 19, he needed money so he was probably out on his own by at least that age.

He tells his confidence buddy in the bar, when asked about what happened to his previous money stash: "I like earning it as much as I like spending it." Perhaps compensation for a financially poor childhood and teen years?

By becoming a confidence man at the age of 19, we can probably assume that that wasn't his first brush with the law since his scheme for this $6,000 was successful so he must have had practice in smaller ways.

He mentions at the restaurant that he works with Jess "at the auto dealership". So he was probably a car salesman and no doubt a good one. This would be his mode of operation to gain the trust of intended victims so his other jobs would probably have been selling or presentation of some type.

The situation in Sawyer's flashback episode clearly happened in the United States and most likely in New Orleans, Louisiana due to David mentioning Louisiana putting up 2/3 of the investment money and the Spanish moss hanging from the tree at Jess's and David's home as Sawyer storms out.

So, we don't know as of now what happened between then and Sawyer being in Australia and on that plan back to the United States.

Any theories? I think Sawyer is a very interesting guy!
