View Full Version : are YOU optomistic/pessimistic about LOST?

When the LOST "phenomena" (survival of crash/monster/etc…) are finally revealed or explained after "x" many seasons, do you think you will be:

Depends what the explanation is. Impossible to even begin to guess how it will all play out after 7 of 80+ possible episodes.

i said disappointed.
i love the show so far.. but with the turns its been taking lately, its making me think that it will be something completely unrealistic and just way out there.
part of the fun of it for me up to this point was the whole clue gathering and putting together little theories of what could possibly be going on. (though nowhere near as extreme and thought out as some i've read on here). but im starting to believe that all the clues they've been leaving are gonna just turn out to be unimportant and it will have some weird phenomenal explanation..... *sigh..

Stu,

For me, it all depends on *how* all the phenomena are explained.

Right now, it's still possible that I'll be absolutely elated, but it's also possible I'll feel like throwing something at the tv.

Or, throwing the TV at something...

In my experience, most television shows eventually run out of steam, particularly shows with an ongoing, continuing storyline. I'm not terribly optimistic, but I hope I'm wrong! Still, the writers probably have enough good ideas to keep the show going for a season or two. The premise of Lost doesn’t really lend itself well to longevity. If the writers can keep it going longer than I expect I’ll be really impressed.

I wish there would be a show where they would set its length at one season, so they can take the time to explore the story and conclude it in a complete, satisfying way. I think a show like that might attract some A list Hollywood actors, if they know it will end after one season, which would help it become a success.

They will screw it up eventually (or sooner) just like they always do. If it gets canceled (calm down, calm down) between seasons in the distant future they will not have the foresight to have already filmed a closing episode to wrap things up and the network won't care how many people they leave hanging, even the worst TV show has about 2 million weekly viewers. Seasons are like movie sequels, they always feel compelled to 'crank it up a notch' every season whether we want them to or not. And they do not know when to stop. X files started as a cool show, random freakish events or mutants. Then they introduced the conspiracy, first a little, eventually every damn show! Even if they know when the last show of the last season is going to be, I have very rarely seen a good 'last' episode: Magnum P.I.-he re-enlisted?, M*A*S*H--I still don't know what the hell that one was about, The Wonder Years--Kevin and Winnie do not end up together, Quantum Leap--Sam never gets to go home. Never?!?, Star Trek TNG--set up a timeline that the other series and movies promptly ignored, Angel--they all die in an alley. I will watch until the show is canceled or the current creative team no longer seems to care about there own rules or is replaced by a group that wants to take the show in a completely 'new' direction. Low expectations does not mean I do not enjoy the show, it just means I have been here before and things sometimes end badly otherwise they would never end. Would I like to be wrong about this? Sure I could stand to be pleasantly surprised. But I am rarely wrong, it is a burden I have come to bare. sigh, woe is me.

Great now J.G. is going get after me again.:p

Baron, unfortunately, what you say is true. (PS, you forgot the Sienfeld finale, The 3 guys in prison with nothing left to talk about? How could Elaine not be in the closing segment? I mean, what's the deal with that?)
That's why I agree with Lostboys point... short lifespans for shows is the way to go. Overseas most shows do not go more than 2-3 seasons. (So I've heard, I could be wrong.) At least for dramas they should consider this. There are exceptions, of course, but not many. If Buffy had only gone 3 seasons, we would not have had the Musical Episode, and IMHO that would have been a tragedy.
The reason shows jump the shark is that they reach a point the creators/writers never planned for. If the concept is thought out with a definite end in mind, the quality could remain consistent throughout the life of the show.

I almost forgot to answer my own post! I said "disappointed". But, I suppose there's still a chance for "amazed". I've read waaaaaay too many theories, many overlapping or variants of a similar idea, which try to explain the phenomena - but they are ... well ... lacking. I don't want anything I've seen or heard before. If it's truly "new" and fits into the science/pseudo science parameters stated by the production team - I may very well end up amazed.

Not quite sure how to answer the question so I'll go with cautiously optimistic to guarded (I know--not on the poll! :D ). The series truly interests me so I'd hate for them to wuss out when it comes time to explain things, wuss out and fall back on some hokey thing that's been done to death by "The X-Files", "Alias" or any one of a dozen other genre series.

As for how long the series can last, as long as the writng remains fresh and the stories inventive, five years should be an easy row to hoe. My one hope is that the powers that be will see the show start to fall off and pull the plug, before it wears out it's welcome, the way a couple of the "Star Trek" series did.

To quote from another show that started strong and ended weak, "I want to believe."

I'm not worried. I'm enjoying it so much right now that admittedly, I'm not really looking ahead yet. But these writers seem capable of anything -- I bet it's quite sustainable...

I agree. Shows usually jump the shark when the network decides to hire new writers, or didn't hire good ones in the first place. As long as this creative team is on LOST, I'll be watching!

I think that's why we haven't seen the 'monster' lately. I mean, I WANT to see the 'monster'! I REALLY WANT to know what it is, but if I see the trees shaking every week, I'll get tired of them toying with my sanity.

And as for multi-season story arcs with satisfying endings, I would like to nominate Babylon 5, which was also under the creative control of the creator/writer. When JMS wasn't sure if he was going to get the full five season run to tell the story, he shot the final episode at the end of season four, so the fans wouldn't be left hanging. When the show did get a 5th season, he just held it for the end.

And speaking of B5, Mira Furlan begins her role on LOST next week!

Enjoy it while it lasts. Conclusions are seldomly satisfying. I just don't hope it's something like "it was all a dream".

I chose "Indifferent. Okay explanation/It's the journey not the destination". I would have been disappointed if the monster was a dinosaur but I've read enough spoilers that I think I will like the explanation of the "monster". Of course those spoilers could be wrong but I still don't think I'll be disappointed.

i think there is no definate answer. if they just reveal the monster, end of show. period.

think like the matrix. "maybe there IS no monster".... (as in "there is no spoon") :lol

so they said they will explain the unexplain so you will have to wait. i, for one, can't wait for more of this show. i hope it will last for many more season.

BUT BUT if somehow the show did make a complete turn and fail to live to its hype, then i would be really really disappointed.

I expect to be indifferent.
I hope to be satisfied.

If even Joss Whedon couldn't pull off an amazing finale (BtVS -- not even a series that required much tying up of loose ends), I find it difficult to believe that one is possible.

I voted for amazed.

If this season is any indication of what is to come, I expect twists and turns that will keep us on our toes and second guessing up until the moment it's all revealed.

I just hope the momentum keeps going. It would be a shame for the plot to fizzle as time wears on. I'd actually be in favor of less seasons if it meant keeping the ultimate story as good as it can be.

There's no way to tell. The good news is that the writers have planned 3-4 seasons. Planed = thought through, so that's encouraging. It depends. I think we'll have a feel by season 2 if it's gonna work.

I like this show for so many other reasons aside from a potential monster that it really does not matter to me.

Well seeing as how things have been going so far...with the twists and really bizarre and weird storylines that are unexpected, I have a feeling that if it does get the chance to continue, it should be really amazing if/when the explanation finally comes.

It has to stop after 3 seasons. Just like 24: season 4 sucks so far! You know the rules, so it gets too predictable. Besides: there are already so many questions. After two years or longer it'll get too complicated. They can't stick on the same beach and/or cave for 8 years, so something has to happen if they want to go on. I won't see it end properly, but the series is cool!

I voted "indifferent". I can't remember how X-Files or Twin Peaks ended (or V, but maybe 'cause that jumped the shark sooner, yikes) and I'd probably be shocked if I bothered to go over to TV Tome or wherever and read a synopsis.

Quite right, "The journey is its own reward." Give me drama! Give me romance! Give me thrills! Just don't give me spoilers or any warning when the ending is near. :)

This may make some of you angry, but I think you people are just to hard to please. It's not that hard to quit watching a show you are disappointed with. If you want closure on the story lines because you are just to curious than fine, just watch and be quiet about it :|

P.S- I'm not going to be surprised if I get a boat load of people complaining about what I just said, because I would expect nothing less from this group of people.
