View Full Version : Solitary Q #2- Is there a light on the island?

If the preview for Solitary, if you slow it down and freeze-frame it, there appears to be a light powered by electricity or some other power source where Sayid is being held. The frames with the light are a close-up though, and could have come from anywhere. There is a similar light that appears behind the French woman who Sayid seems to be looking at through a net. The placement of the light in the room is a standard interogation technique, as it keeps the woman's identity silhouetted as long as she's in front of it.
So, is there really a light with some kind of power source where Sayid is being held? Or is this more "creative editing" from ABC's promo department? The clips with the light could have come from Sayid's flashbacks, which seem to occur in a military prison. There does appear to be a light source reflecting on Sayid's face, but you can't tell if its from a powered light or a candle, and the woman does inject him with something.
So what do you think?

There's also a chain-link fence seen in that promo. I'm thinking it's a flashback. Probably part flashback, and part capture by French woman in the promo.

My prediction: It is definitely the French woman and she has a power source. I still think it's hidden in a waterfall (not that piddly one in the cave - a BIG one).
If I'm wrong, Pin, I'll buy you a drink.

I think it's definately a power source on the island. They have never shown a flashback in a preview before, why would they start now?

Ok, as much as i would find it intriguing for the French woman to have that type of fixtures on the island, I'm laughing inside wondering where she'd get new light bulbs, or maybe she's like the professor on Gilligan's island and it's really just coconuts powered by Gilligan's riding a bamboo bicycle creating the power to generate it...yes thats it...i should write for ABC.....HOPE YOU GOT A KICK OUT OF MY POST...

I also brought this up about the lightbulbs, if we are to beleive she has been there for 16 years or more then she would have to have a Walmart nearby for all the replacements she would need.
I think what this will lead to is that there used to be some sort of military base on this island, probably one that did something very secretive. It was filled with supplies and probably well staffed until something goes wrong and the entity that is on the island did away with most of the personel on the island leaving Alex and this French woman alone without any hope of rescue. And thus leaving behind a well stocked storeroom including lightbulbs, afterall you can not eat lightbulbs.

I'm actually hoping that the light and power source is on the island...that will help build a case toward my unified field experiment theory. But I'm kind of expecting that they're just messing with us in the promo.

You all do know there is one of Edison's lightbulbs still burning don't you?

I really think there is a power source on the island... there'd pretty much have to be, if the distress signal has been running for 16 years. As for the lightbulb thing, that is an issue, but I'm pretty sure there actually is a kind of lightbulb that was developed to last a really long time (years), but the industry doesn't make these available to the general public, because then the companies would lose money since they wouldn't be selling any more lightbulbs! These lightbulbs were reserved for government, scientific, and industrial uses... which just adds to the theory that this is a government conspiracy of some kind...

The "chain-link fence" looks more like an upended bedspring cot.

I saw the preview again last night and there is a light bulb above where Sayid is tied down. He then says "Who are you? What are you doing?" (paraphrase)
So there is light on the island and I imagine the French woman would either use the water on the island to generate power or have some independent power source depending on how and why she is on the island. For example, if she was left on the island but originally part of some group (which appears to be a plausible assumption based on her radio transmission where she refers to a man in her party), the group could have brought a generator or some other device as a source of electricity.
Just my theory... Perhaps we will find out tonight!
Stay tuned.... 8)

Where is she getting the gas for the generator? I have not seen any gas stations on the island yet.

Look there's a power source that's keeping a distress signal running for 16 years. It's also a known fact that the French did nuclear testing in the pacific. It's highly probable that there's some sort of scientific or military base on this island designed for long term use. Our little survivors haven't tried to actually find out what's on the island before and 9 is gonna be the first episode where someone is beach walking. Obviously there's something to find. Or else this would be one boring episode.
Not that they wouldn't pull the wool over our eyes and make it something from Sayid's past.
Danielle described a shipwreck, I don't think she was part of an intentional French presence. That's not to say that there isn't an intentional presence o some sort from somewhere. As long as we're pondering the lifespans of lightbulbs, anyone know what the shelflife of the sedative she gave Sayid is? How about how long bullets would last in a tropical environment? Some things we're just going to have to accept as TV.
